  • Kelly Galloup's Smoke Wagon is an excellent trailer pattern either fished in tandem or behind a bigger articulated pattern. While this is one of the most popular ways to fish the pattern, it also shines as a solo fly. It imitates a lot of different baitfish and is a great all around fly for smaller water systems.
    Material List:
    Hook: MFC 7008 #6
Tail: Olive Chickabou over White Marabou
    Flash: Silver Holographic Flashabou
    Body: Pearl Cactus Chenille
Marabou Stacks: Olive Chickabou over White Marabou
    Lateral Lines: Olive Grizzly Hackle

Hi Josh, new subscriber. Found myself here after I ordered some killer late season bleached hair of yours from slide inn and the shop mentioned your channel.
I’ve been wanting to experiment with some trout style flies for our SC redfish and speckled sea trout and snook when I go down to south FL. I’m really digging the smoke wagon and barely legal concepts. My question, if you are wanting to answer of course, is I don’t have any experience with down eye hooks on single hook streamers, do you feel the down eye makes any real impact on action vs a ring eye with a platform like the smoke wagon? Or is it more of a tradition thing?
Like I said I’m new here, and I’ve got months of streamer content to watch, digest, and apply to the vise. Your content is great, keep it up, and well done so far.

We could go into a full PhD discussion on the ring-eye vs down eye variances. I really think a lot of it is how you manipulate the fly on your retrieve based on the hook you tied it on. You can't use the same action on a ring that you do a down. Just pay attention to the action you get on each and adapt from there.
