  • Kelly Galloup's Smoke Wagon is the fly that eventually brought the Barely Legal to the fly tying world. This single hooked fly represents a trout fry all depending on what colors it's tied in. It could also be used to imitate a dace minnow. This fly has become a popular trailer fly fished in tandem with an articulated fly.
    Material List:
Hook: 3X Long Streamer Hook (size dependent)
Tail: Brown/Olive Marabou over White Marabou
    Flash: Silver Flashabou
    Body: Medium Pearl Estaz
    Overwings: Brown/Olive Marabou
    Underwings: White Marabou
    Lateral Lines: Olive Grizzly Hackle
    Thread: UTC GSP 100

Nicely tied. I fish the barely but I think singles are a great flies for prospecting.

Thank you, I agree, I really like trailing singles behind an articulated pattern.

@@varnersstreamers do you find that having another fly behind an articulated pattern interferes with the action of the fly, or it doesn't really make a difference?

Josh, thanks very much. If you were going to use this fly as a single, would you suggest adding a skull weight or lead wraps? Thanks, Bob

Hey Bob, if I were going to fish this one solo, I’d add a 3/16” tungsten bead for deeper water, and likely unweighted for the shallow stuff. Thanks for watching!
