This was huge when I figured this out a couple years ago. Whenever I'm swinging back from my spoils pile I make sure to look at the grade, the changing perspective while swinging almost lets you see your grade in more of a "3D" way

Likewise, as an operator you can always p/u tips & tricks from others and get a different perspective on things, something I've done my whole life and it has served me well.

Hi Barry, just got my first excavator and I'm so glad I have found your videos. I think it will be very educational as to how to do the jobs these machines are designed to do. Just spent an hour on digging my first trench and there is a LOT of room for improvement! Thanks.

hi mate, I have only 2 years experience on the machines, on and off, so not really 8 hours a day every day, so i really appreciate operators like you sharing tips to get better. Cheers and sub

Hi Barry I'm enjoying your videos I find them to be interesting and informative. I'm trying to learn as much as I can about being an operator before I head to the apprenticeship tryout again this year. What I'd like to know is how you get that 45° slope on the sides of your ditch or hole? When I went last year they had us dig a trench and attempt to slope the sides but I found it difficult to do with the ground being pretty frozen. Is there a technique you could recommend?

Did you watch the video i have on how to slope your ditch it may help if you have watched it try pushing away from yourself when you brush your slopes it cuts the frost at the top cleaner vs pushing strait down

Yes I did and that is helpful. I've watched it a couple times now. Last time I was trying to dig from the inside out, not outside in and pulling the material instead of pushing with the bucket. I also noticed you kind of swing the bucket out as you push as well. I guess I'm asking how you get that smooth 1 to 1 slope going out from the center. Mine looked more like a ditch in the middle with rounded stairs on the sides

Unfortunately only practice the more you do the better you will get
