  • Should we take our dog on our Big Lap around Australia?
The question comes from Cheryl Wright who wants to know whether they should take their dog ‘Opie’ on their Big Lap.
It’s a tough question and in this video I’ll discuss some of the problems with travelling with a dog, some of the possible solutions to make it easier and whether I think we would take our dog ‘Buddy’ if we were planning another Big Lap ourselves.
Got a question for me about doing 'The Big Lap' or any other Aussie road trip adventure?

Love the advice. I know this video is a few years old, but for anyone reading the comments - depending on where you are a great feature to utilize post-covid is click and collect. A lot of places now have same day click and collect services available which can help eliminate the frustration of shopping alone with your dog when on the road. Also I second that book recommendation! Happy travels!

There are exceptions to restricted areas for dog eg: national parks . Is having a certified assistance dog it can be any breed. National parks , supermarkets , hotels , caravan parks cannot refuse entry this is nation wide , in entering a national park you are just suppose to let them know and must be leashed . With bates 1080 you should get a muzzle when in bated areas or any are of concern so they don't scavenge . With Snakes be careful always never let the dog go off unleashed wondering off in dicey areas. Taking a dog with your kids would be difficult and a distraction but a couple should be no worries .

Ask Steve. What a great idea. You’ve given answers to a lot of Q’s without me having to ask. Great advice. Thank you.

There is a pod cast of 2 sparkles travelling with a dog..
They entered many NP,s with there dog..
Paid fees infringement of ranger with dog on back seat...
I travel with 3 dogs...have done for years...
I never leave my dogs anywhere or with anyone... with all the places to see..
What you can't see doesn't matter..
Seen one pub.. seen them all..
Would you dump your kids just to see a NP...

We are planning on travelling with a dog and 2 kids in a bus conversion. We would have aircon in the bus so he could just stay inside. He also doesn’t bark, but after watching many videos it doesn’t seem like we could be naughty and hide him in the bus.

These are hard decisions. I am so lucky mine is a service dog and he loves the car. Mine will just adjust but i make it comfortable. Just lucky he has had all the training that i have done with him and also got him used to travel before going. Thank you.

Thanks for the video, I am currently travelling with my dog and I am terrified of baits.

Hi Steve weve taken both our dog and cat with us in our motorhome currently on East coast nsw. We had to ignore no dogs and no camping signs just to participate in the community on beaches and places to camp. Signs every bloodywhere like a cancer on society stopping people with pets being part of the community. They are un Australian. Just trying to enjoy our holiday and see so many people forced to break the law to participate. We have a beautiful country for all to enjoy. Thanks Steve love your channel

I agree its becoming a nanny state. I'm sure heaps of ppl have had to break the law inadvertantly or on purpose doing a lap with there best buds.

Thanks, Steve, for some great advice and information. I think you have helped tip us over to what we were already thinking. You are dead right, it is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be doing this with our kids and we may never get back to some of these places, we need to make the most of it and don't want to limit ourselves. There will be tears when we have to drive away, but we will be back! We will still enjoy our beautiful dog for many years, he will just have a holiday at Grandma and Grandad's for a while! We will definitely check out those dog sitting sites and grab the book you recommended for our shorter trips when he can come too. Thanks for taking the time to make this awesome video, I am sure it will help many others in the same predicament.

Update from after our trip. We were really so glad we listened to Steve's advice. It would definitely have changed our whole trip and really limited us. I know it is a hard decision, but we were lucky to leave our dog with my Mum who he felt really comfortable with. We missed him, he missed us... but I am sure now he doesn't even remember it. We also got the best greeting ever when we got home! :)

quite a sad video. appreciate the limitations of taking a dog but your dog is a part of the family. some people just should not own dogs if they think parking them somewhere for 12 months is acceptable. very sad.

Just to clarify Terry, we didn’t have a dog before we did our Big Lap and didn’t get one until much later. If you did have a dog it would be a tough decision to leave them behind but better to understand the consequences either way as taking them with you does change the flexibility you have to go places. It’s an individual thing.
