Could you make a video to actually introduce Austin as tech hub? Many people speak about it, but I feel there is no video actually introducing it; e.g., this is the area where startups and incubator are housed, this is the area where coffee shops full of start-up people are, these are investors with actual base in Austin, this is the area where traditional tech companies are, and this is the area where most people in traditional tech companies live and commute from. Our startup thinks of expanding to Austin, but we find it difficult to get a feeling on the city.
This was great! Bit surprised at how many academia-related questions you receive, but great that you can provide them with your perspective (which sounds very healthy and nuanced, btw). One thing I personally agree a lot on but find it difficult to take your position on is not moving for a job. Coming originally from Australia, where there are far fewer jobs in my desired field, I believe I need to go out of Australia for a while. I also am happy to spend time overseas and explore. My current hope is that through experience in the "cutting edge" places outside Australia, I can become senior/experienced enough to be competitive for something back in my home country.
I totally understand your perspective. Sometimes it’s necessary to go explore other places and gain new experiences just so you can ultimately live where you want. Sometimes the experience itself is so invaluable that location doesn’t/shouldn’t matter. I think you’ve thought a lot more about it than most who say they’re open to anything. It’s like if you don’t even know what you want, you’ll never know when you get it.
😂 I actually did this for my Google team-matching interviews. I wore the purple Mickey Mouse sweater I’ve worn in other videos. I guess I don’t own a diverse wardrobe.
This was actually pretty cool.
Thank you for this video Jan.

They say dress for the job you want, so I'm going to my next interview in a Mickey Mouse sweater.
