Keep following our reporting on the Marilyn Monroe house landmark drama, including the billionaire owners suing for the right to demolish and making wild allegations of conspiracy. Our innocent email, a citizen communicating with the staff of an elected official, is Exhibit E in their petition for writ of mandate.
    esotouric.substack.com/marilynmonroe4
And we've got a scoop: the owners who sold the house to Brinah Milstein and Roy Bank almost tore it down--although it was described as a remodel--in 2023. See that plan and find out how you can attend the June 4, 2024 court date at esotouric.substack.com/marilynmonroe5

@@KnotsOfWonders it's important. This house is obviously of enormous interest to people all over the world, but there are so many historic buildings--many containing affordable units--that also are threatened with demolition without the required community notification and opportunity to object. We're grateful that Marilyn is helping to shine a light on how broken land use policy is in Los Angeles. Onward!

@@esotouric Yes, I'm from Singapore and I also recognise the significance of Marilyn's one and only home that she actually owned. It deserves to be preserved in honor of her memory, all of her philanthropic efforts that helped orphans, hospital patients and wounded soldiers, and her impact she had on society and arguably the world in regards to how we treat women's roles on the big screen.
It's pretty obvious these billionaires are abusing the policy to flatten historical buildings to erect uninspired carbon copied houses for profit. As if LA needed more gentrification..
Anyways I thought that you guys should know that there really are people all over the world that care about Marilyn and that you're working hard to shine light on the situation! Marilyn, even though she had not found the love she was looking for, sure had a lot of love within herself to give to the world. And it warms my heart that people still care for her and her legacy. The house has been there longer than they have existed, I wonder why they (billionaires) chose to live there specifically and buy that particular property? Especially knowing that it’s a very popular tourist spot. Did they think they could stop the millions of fans from coming… It’s been a tourist destination for a long time even when it was in disarray and poorly cared for, likely before they even lived there. It’s one of the most famous houses in the world and it is significant because she died there! The spiritual , emotional attachment that people have for a place like this is really beyond rational thought or understanding. They can’t be this ignorant, surely. On the other hand they are very brave to stand there and state their point of view and I empathise with their lack of privacy and the fact that the children are frightened because of drones. Everyone deserves the right to privacy inside their own home .However, Marilyn is literally one of the most famous people in the world , in history. They bought the problems along with the house. They should have known this would cause a huge uproar within the local communities and fanbase of Marilyn Monroe. Someone as famous as Marilyn will have attracted all manner of different kinds of people , including potentially dangerous , unpredictable people. The likelihood of having strangers breaking into a property like this was almost guaranteed to happen. I almost doubt that knocking it down will actually stop the fans from coming… if anything , it will probably make them come more often considering that many people do have an emotional , sentimental attachment to the area. When people become emotional they will do crazy things. If I was in their position , This alone would make me want to get my kids out of there. I just can’t believe they really were that naive when they purchased the property. Do they live under a rock. ?.

This is Hollywood's chance to make up for all the times during her career, that they told Marilyn, "now remember, you're not a star." If that were true, we wouldn't still be talking about her. Her last home is just as important as every other piece of her legacy, and therefore, should be preserved.

Did Milstein build her house, then realize she didn't have any room for a yard? Or did she plan to buy the Hunter-Monroe house to tear it down all along. Because it would have made more sense to have bought the Hunter-Monroe house and tore it down first, before over building on her lot. She comes from a family that made their fortune in real estate. So it seems like getting in a spot where her house is so big, she has no yard, should have been something taken into consideration before building her house. Kind of silly to build a house so big on your lot, that you have no yard, then complain to the city that you have no yard.

Her argument is intended to cause us to feel sorry for her, but there are points to consider if you've been to the area that keep me from feeling sorry for her. There is nothing more disturbing than the sound of jackhammers, nail guns, hammering, buzz sawing and back up truck alarms, radios blasting, oh wait...maybe leaf blowers are...but that is the neighborhood surrounding Marilyn's house. Developers tear down beautiful historic properties to build ridiculous-looking uninspiring military style fortresses. I don't believe her when she says people even have access to her front door to ask for access to Marilyn's house. Fancy New York lawyers (he almost said "Brooklyn" when he meant Brentwood) are genius' at composing convincing testimonies, but this one is horse manure. Tour buses cannot get down 5th Helena, it's basically an alleyway. People do drive or walk to the driveway gate, but there is no graffiti and anyone who does that is for the most part respectful. That's because they love Marilyn.

If you are going to buy a house in an area of notable homes with the intention of demolishing it you need to do your due diligence. First you need to look up the architect, the firm they worked for and if possible the builder. Then you need to find out if any of the buildings that architect designed have a historic, heritage or culture designation. While Monroe did live there, Harbin Hunter the architect who designed the house has had another building he built receive a designation. He is an architect of note. So regardless of who lived there, the house was built by an architect whose work has been recognized and designated as deserving protection. Before buying this house to tear down, Milstein should have approached the city's building department and gotten approval before buying the house. Being honest with the head of the building department and saying you know this house was built by an architect who has had another property they built get a protective designation, but that this house hasn't been maintained and is in rough shape and you want to know before you buy it if it can be demolished and the land annexed onto your house nextdoor. They will probably say, let me look into it. Also checking with city council and telling neighbors around both properties what you want to do. Yes this is opening a can of worms. But it's better to open it before you buy the house. If the Milsteins real estate agent knew they intended to demolish, they house, they should have given them advice to sort it out before buying. I wonder if Milstein was hoping to quietly have the house demolished without Monroe or mission style architecture fans finding out. If her house is the big black house behind Monroe's it looks like a large pole barn, possibly an indoor equestrian barn. If the 2 houses, the 1 designed by Hunter might be in worse shape now, but it is more interesting, beautiful and historic. Monroe worked hard to make the money to buy that house when most women didn't or couldn't afford to buy their own property. It's sad that history and distinct houses will be lost for people who want McMansions. When Milstein first built a huge house on her lot, she must have realized having a yard would be a problem. Was she always planning on doing this? If so being up front might have saved time and effort.

*Moving the house should be acceptable. Make it part of a Marilyn Museum, with theaters, showing her movies, regularly. A restaurant, featuring her favorite foods & drinks, among Marilyn-inspired items. NO look-alike servers! The look-alikes will be for the Marilyn Showroom. Different Marilyns singing in different outfits from different eras. And, of course, Drag Marilyns, cause, why not! Or, a Drag Marilyn Night would be great. A retro clothing shop. Boutique? Just for starters.* 🙂

It would be cultural vandalism to allow the demolition of that house. It must be preserved, being the only home Marilyn bought herself and the place where she died. There are many other homes for billionaires to buy.

What a ridiculous argument. They knew where they were living when they purchased and moved there. They knew whose home they were purchasing,. They totally expected there to be great push back on demolishing the house of one of the worlds largest Icons. Her legacy is still alive and will be for a very long time to come, long after they have gone. As if by demolishing the home that this will cease the tourist passing by, it wont. Look at Cielo Drive. Too many of the homes of Icons have been demolished in LA, they can't let this happen to this one.

Selfish brats. Can’t stand the heat - get away! Marylin Monroe’s home has to become an official national landmark with full public access and proper protection, just like other historical museums and places of significance. I’m sure it would generate more than enough income for its adequate maintenance.
