Just used your video to fix my 2005 Neon !! My car wouldn't start when i came out of the store. Only would turn on my dash lights, not engage the starter. Had the starter checked after i removed it, it was ok. Took the column apart and the same problem, bought one at Napa auto parts $41.00 installed it. Problem solved!! Thanks for the excellent video.
You did a great job explaining and showing how to diagnose and repair this issue. This is the first video from your sight that I've seen and look forward to viewing others. Thank you
The inner mechanism is an ignition switch actuator pin. You can get them from any parts store I purchased a new one from oriellys. it is a Dorman product. Great video... excellent how to!
Thanks so much for taking the time to show this procedure in detail! Excellent tutorial! My problem was just the lock cylinder, but nice to know that this video is available if I ever have other complications with the ignition. Thanks again!
Yesterday at work, I went to start my 2002 Dodge Neon SE, and it wouldn't even crank over. I was able to bump start it, so I figured the problem was somewhere in the starter system. When I got home, I started checking fuses, relays, connections, etc., and eventually made my way to the clutch starter safety switch to bypass it. When that didn't work, I hammered away on Google until I found this video. I then went to Advance Auto just before they closed and picked up a new ignition switch to install this morning. When I pulled everything apart, I found the actuator pin was broken - exactly like in your video! I am going to install the new ignition switch anyway, because I lost the ability to toggle the key to the accessory position a year or so ago, but I'm now on my way to picking up my new Dorman actuator pin at Advance Auto Parts as well. Hopefully within the next hour, I'll be back on the road and living the nEoN lIfE for another 175,000 miles! And all for about $60! Thanks much, Will Robinson from Robinson's Auto! Oh, and when I'm done, I *will* un-bypass my clutch starter safety switch! :)
Thank you for posting this video, it helped a lot. My wife's car wouldn't start but the key would turn and all the accessories worked... it ended up being 1 arm of the ignition actuator. Again thank you as I have never taken apart the ignition system before.
Car wouldn't start tonight while I was working and figured I was in deep doo doo. Ended up at this video...can't think you enough. I've the column open and it's the exact problem. Hoping the junk yard has it in the morning.
This worked perfect! O'reillys had the Dorman 924-704 part in stock for $40, and the security bit set for $7. Because of the video it only took me 30 minutes to diagnose and replace the ignition actuator. Thanks so much.
Good video. The part you replaced is called the IGNITION SWITCH ACTIVATOR PIN ASSEMBLY. It is a $45.00 part. If you sent the vehicle to a dealership, they would have charged you nearly $700.00 for that job. Good work.
Awesome video, very well edited, described and video, one of the best how to video's I have every watched. just as a note all the parts are available. Here are the part numbers:switch standard motors part # US447 switch actuator pin Dorman 924-704cylinder lock Dorman 924-703Thanks again.
i want to thank you ! my gfs car just did this 2 days ago, and thanks to you i found the problem, got it all out same break only problems i ran into is that the screws were to soft and striped im blaming the heat over here lol, but i got er out ! going to pick a part tomorrow to get the replacement ! i tip my hat to you good sir !
My friend is having the starting issue intermittently, I suspect that the part you showed may be cracked and on it's way out. Thanks so much for posting this, at least I have somewhere to start looking.
Wow! This really helps. We are having the same exact problem with our car and we replaced the lock cylinder about 5 years ago. This was a task. Thanks!
Hello there. I found an alternative to going to the junkyard and getting a never used AKA new part. It's Dorman part #924-704: Ignition,Switches Actuator. It's fully assembled as well = drop in replacement. The exact thing happened to me 2 days ago with the 2003 Jeep Wrangler Sport I drive and bought new in '03. Thanks for this video as well as it covers vehicles from that era that have this common problem (metal actuator looks like it's made out of pot metal, hence why they go out / break).
Wish I would have saw this before taking it to the shop. I was initially thinking the key lock cylinder but when that didn't work, I was stumped. Nice work...
THANKYOU for this video, I am going to try replacing the actuator pin and the electronic switch when the new parts come in tomorrow. I didn't even think about those pieces. My car will stay on like it is in accessory position no matter how I turn the key or if I take it out.
Felt obliged to subscribe, great vid mate! Started my car with push button today, and the ignition cylinder has been a bit stiff inflexible or stiff when i trier to put it back on AC, and today didn't even start the engine.
Great Video!! Thanks for taking the time to educate people. Just repaired my 02 Neon with the same issue. Got the part at Auto zone for $39.99. (Ignition Actuator Pin) Thanks Again!
Really good video, you've presented a good thing here as many times you simply cannot drive the car to a repair shop without a working actuator. Hats off to Robinson auto for they've presented a lot of anxiety for many including myself.
This is the second time mine breaks down! I hate it and the reason is due to the material that this piece is made of. Such a cheap metal. Excellent video, though! 👌🏼💯
Glad I found this just bought an 02 neon I was told it was the ignition switch come to find out it was the actuator pin thanks for sharing saved me some money
@turbobuick33 im not 100% sure, i think i purchased that set at harbor fright a couple years back in a pinch, its a security bit set. made by drill master. cheap set however i break the good brands as well, so far they held up. thanks for stopping in, will
Great video. My neon suddenly stopped running while i was driving ( in a parking lot ) and does not want to start at all. No clicks from the starter and no buzz from the fuel pump. My lights work as well as the dash lights but will not turn over or even sound like it want to. I am going to change the ignition switch to see if that is the problem. I feel i can do it after watching your video. Thanks
Hey Will Im not 100% positive but I think Dorman Products has that part available! I can remember doing lots of those in alot of Mopars during my days at the dealer and at first you're only options were what you did sourcing from a yard or buying the complete column! Dorman products are a lifesaver and there channel and website are both excellent! Cheers man!
It worked great! I got this part fro Oriely auto parts for 45$. OMG! I am soooooo happy for this tutorial. I saved shet loads of moneyyy and most importantly tiiiiime!!! Yeeeeey
Thank U, I have a neon that had this issue and i couldn't get anyone to fix it so it has been sittin up. I went as far as connecting a wire to the starter with botton to start until i finally got tired of doing it. Yeah i had to pop the hood remove negative post and fuse to shut it down....lol thanks bro im fixing mine and gas will be saved...
Thank you for your video. had same problem on 2002 town and country limited. switch is a little diffrent than than the one you are doing, but same procedure worked on my town and country. I had a transponder key. All I had to do is remove transponder ring from ing. switch. You might like to show how to do this in one of your videos. Again thank you for your video.
Wish I saw this first! Extremely helpful video and impressive videography (fairly stable)! However, you might want to buy an aftermarket ' ignition actuator pin' since there's now a ton of other videos on this topic for the neon, hinting that the OEM Neon ignition actuator pin is just poorly made.
@jeffsmopar1 that's great to know thanks for the info, i will add them to my favorites for sure, they have a lot of hard to find parts. thanks again i really appreciate it, will
You can buy that piece by itself - it's called the ignition switch actuator pin. It's the same one as the 2006 Jeep Liberty, the Napa PN is 6201414. The MFR part number is 924-704 (Dorman).
Excellant video very easy to follow and informative. Robinsonauto I have a problem with my car starting sometimes when I turn the key to the on position the Skim light comes on and the car will start and die in a few seconds. The light occasionally comes on while I drive as well. I've sprayed the ignition switch with electrical contact cleaner and that fixes it for a while and then it comes back do you think this problem has something to do with a malfunctioning ignition switch?
Nice job! Great video on how to fix it! It is always best to fix it your self instead of bringing it to the shop, it's more fun :) Thanks, now I know how to fix it myself!
Great video. Thanks. I don't have that same problem but my cylinder keeps sticking. I have to bang on the key to get it to turn when this happens. Is there an easy fix for the cylinder or should I just replace it?
Ignition switch and actuator both failed on my 2004 Dodge Neon and this video proved most helpful in diagnosing the issue. See my thread for this problem on JustAnswer.com posted initially on 3 Feb, 2015, "2004 dodge neon sx 2.0 automatic. Exactly what happened to me this morning! Wish this was the first thing I found online instead of troubleshooting it all myself. Just wish there was a way around the security bolts! (Btw... that part ran me $50 at Napa)
hi so I have a plymouth neon 2000 I have the same problem broken. but when I went to bypass to make sure my car still turns I am getting nothing.what would be the next step's? thank you for the video as a women taking apart my car was freely but did what you said and it was a breeze.

Thank you a lot. My Neon wont turn over when i turn the Key. I was told to check the Starter to see if I get a 12 volt charge when I turn the key. If I get a charge then the Starter is out. If no 12 volt charge is shown then it's in the Ignition. The Mechanic said my Battery charger will work and a Voltage Checker. Thank you.
Really professional videography. Well lighted, good focus, good audio and scripting. Nice. I was wondering if aluminum shavings could be why the ignition switch fuse keeps blowing intermittently, usually just after the ignition is turned off. A new 20 fuse resets it, then after awhile it happens again, usually noticed after first crank next day. Is there anything in there to short out?
Clay ton, my part number was 924-704. autozone should have it for you. worse case scenario is you might have to order it if it isn't available that day
Had a potential customer contact me with this same issue, now if they decide to have me do the work I know what I'm looking for and what I need, thanks!
This is a really good video. Would you be able to upload a video showing the step by step process in removing the entire dash unit from the car. I could not find it anywhere on this site for this model of car. thanks in advance. I have a chrysler plymouth neon 2001 standard edition manual drive
Correct, ignition switch actuator pin. Napa PN is 6201414. The MFR part number is 924-704 (Dorman) covered in earlyer comments i will add it to the description thanks
I went to Pull-A-Part and got the Ignition Switch (with the T10 Security bit) but I couldn't get the Actuator because there is no key to remove the lock cylinder. Just knock it off with a hammer and chisel next time? Great video thanks.

Getting ready to do this repair this morning. Reviewed the manual but your video was so much better. Thank you.
My friend is having the starting issue intermittently, I suspect that the part you showed may be cracked and on it's way out. Thanks so much for posting this, at least I have somewhere to start looking.
I had no idea where to start with my neon. And this video helped me a lot and I’m sure saved me hundreds of dollars! Thank you!
Thank for this informative video. My ignition pin broke today and your video saved me. Thank you!!!
Thanks. You saved me money, time and hassling with a mechanic.

Exactly the video I needed for my 04 neon. Thanks RobinsonAuto. Saved me hours and $$$$. Also i bought the actuator pin separately for about $40.
Felt obliged to subscribe, great vid mate! Started my car with push button today, and the ignition cylinder has been a bit stiff inflexible or stiff when i trier to put it back on AC, and today didn't even start the engine.
This was a great video, very informative. I had no problem tearing into my car to find out what was wrong thanks to you. Keep on making more videos
And thank you for making the video! The person I was helping lives in Canada, I'm in St. Louis - makes things a breeze :)
Great Video!! Thanks for taking the time to educate people. Just repaired my 02 Neon with the same issue. Got the part at Auto zone for $39.99. (Ignition Actuator Pin) Thanks Again!

Learned a lot from you Robin, and i will check first, and replace one for my Chrysler Neon.
Great video this helped me fix my moms 2005 dodge neon. I love the detailed steps. Excellent video
Your welcome, hope things worked out for you
This was a great video!! About to attempt the same thing on my brother's plymouth. Now I feel a little more comfortable doing it!
This was great imformation! You almost told me, what I neened to know. I need to remove, the cylinder lock housing.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! I'm in the process of doing it and almost done!

Good video - helped me out a lot - first time replacing ignition switch .
This was a great troubleshooting guide. Thanks!
thanks for sharing. getting this done today. I thought it was going to be like pulling teeth. you made it look easy!!
Candy Mitchell hope all goes well, thanks for the compliment;)
You are more than welcome and thanks again!!!!!
Thanks for the video, just fixed my neighbors car. found the part at O'reilly auto for less then $50.
Great video, helping at the end of 2022
thanks man awesome job on the video very helpful
thank you, will save this video for an upcoming project
Great video. Thanks.
I don't have that same problem but my cylinder keeps sticking. I have to bang on the key to get it to turn when this happens. Is there an easy fix for the cylinder or should I just replace it?
helped me out a lot bro thanks for posting
Jeremiah Muldoon awesome, your welcome
Great job, glad i could help thank you for sharing, feedback like this is what keeps me making videos ;)
Ignition switch and actuator both failed on my 2004 Dodge Neon and this video proved most helpful in diagnosing the issue. See my thread for this problem on JustAnswer.com posted initially on 3 Feb, 2015, "2004 dodge neon sx 2.0 automatic. Quit…"
Upon disassembly of ignition lock cylinder, ignition actuator and ignition switch assembly several problems were encountered. The “mechanic” who last disassembled this system to repair it lost two springs and two detents on the ignition actuator so it was not operating correctly. The ignition switch was the original problem, as it would not operate smoothly. When my son turned the key the actuator failed when a pot metal tab broke off that turns the ignition switch into start position because of the high turning resistance in the switch.
I purchased a new ignition switch and actuator for $CA107.51 and reinstalled them after much fiddling. I had to tie the longer stem spring with thread to compress it before inserting the actuator stem into the ignition switch and I had to wrap scotch tape around the brass detent and spring which kept flying off the moment I tried to install it in steering column…no wonder the original went missing! The ignition actuator comes with a two page detailed set of installation instructions plus three photos (Dorman Part #: 924-704) but it fails to mention the above two crucial installation issues.
Sounds like you may have a tumbler issue in the cylinder itself if so its cheapest just to replace, you can try and have a new key cut and see if that helps, most likely its the cylinder
This is more common than you think. Happened to me too! 10 years later after purchase 2000
EXCELENT VIDEO, NICE EJERCICE OF REPAIR IGNITION SWITCH.
Exactly what happened to me this morning! Wish this was the first thing I found online instead of troubleshooting it all myself. Just wish there was a way around the security bolts! (Btw... that part ran me $50 at Napa)
hi so I have a plymouth neon 2000 I have the same problem broken. but when I went to bypass to make sure my car still turns I am getting nothing.what would be the next step's? thank you for the video as a women taking apart my car was freely but did what you said and it was a breeze.
thank you for the compliment, your welcome
I'm in England so I've got a right hand drive Chrysler Neon 4 door ( does that count as a saloon ) and I think that it's the electrical part of the ignition. People here in Plymouth including auto locksmiths look at me as if I'm asking about an alien spaceship and you would not believe how many places I had to try myself looking for the front brake pads and discs so that the garage could fit them. No-one so far knows anything about the rear ones as they are not discs and pads ! Are they really that uncommon in this part of the country/world ? Anyway I'm going to give it a go with your video and hope for the best !
Awesome thank you very much 🐺
Your welcome
Thanks a lot man I was about to hot wire my girlfriends car but Iam off to the junk yard now for an easy fix lol
Clay ton, my part number was 924-704. autozone should have it for you. worse case scenario is you might have to order it if it isn't available that day
Had a potential customer contact me with this same issue, now if they decide to have me do the work I know what I'm looking for and what I need, thanks!
Very good your video thanks for this very useful information helped me a lot, GOD BLESS YOU. From garcia nuevo leon mexico. regards
The MFR part number is 924-704 (Dorman)
covered in earlyer comments i will add it to the description thanks
I went to Pull-A-Part and got the Ignition Switch (with the T10 Security bit) but I couldn't get the Actuator because there is no key to remove the lock cylinder. Just knock it off with a hammer and chisel next time? Great video thanks.
@pepi27 sounds like you may have something installed incorrectly. there is usually a separate set of contacts for the key on the cylinder
Your welcome, glad i could help
Thanks , your video helped me a lot ... greetings from mexico
Thank you, wish you luck
Glad i could help, your welcome
Thank you for sharing this info
