Oakdalian February 1997. Correct me if I'm wrong, O but this was the month Lily
and Diego were to wed...on Valentine's Day nonetheless. She must be on the verge of finding out who Diego really is. Following she foolishly comes up with a plan. I'm
going to guess this particular episode lies somewhere in between this
discovery and that fateful whodunnit-wedding day.

I was shaking my head when Lisa said well within earshot of Christopher that Bob must think Kim was going to die. Oh Lisa...always tactless...
This time period was supposed to be a big revival for ATWT. The ratings had briefly risen and there was some buzz. Ultimately it fizzled, and at this time I was so sour over Allyson Rice-Taylor's firing that I couldn't get as invested as I may have wanted to, but at least they were trying. Goodness knows Goutman never did by the last years.

Ken George Jones I suspect that bad blocking made Lisa look insensitive.
It's too bad that Laurence Caso didn't stay with ATWT. I can almost appreciate what's going on with the far from innovative stories, but the underscore is horrid and the directing is less keen than during its Marland renaissance. Nobody is talking about anything other than the main plots either. There should be more going on in each character's life. A writer who can't juggle that (or isn't allowed to) is very obvious. I'm not sure how much more Connor could have carried on, though Allyson Rice was fabulous. Business dealings had been largely neutered on the show by now, so characters built around them lost their identities, like Kirk. Her firing was bad, but the double whammy of Scott Bryce & Martha Byrne should make Goutman synonymous with infamy.

Oakdalian The music is definitely distracting - it's way too lite jazz when Kim is in surgery.
I don't think Connor had that much time left as a character either, it's just that she was dumped right as the show was supposed to be improving. Even worse, the actress who replaced her basically implied to the soap press that the situation was just like MADD and FMB being all, "Hey, here's a job for you," a harbinger for just how wildly miscast she was.
This was the start of ATWT being done as an ABC soap. Caso had his flaws, especially in late 1993-late 1994, but he did care about ATWT for what it was and what it was supposed to be.

Don't blame Goutman. He was the one responsible for the complete turnaround that brought them emmy recognition every year when he hired Hogan Sheffer. P&G is the problem. They wanted out.

An ABC soap? ATWT was a CBS soap from the start.

The Diego/Emily storyline seems intense! I think they where very involved. I mean, from my memory, at first there was some kind of softporn shower scene, but never knew it turned out this ugly between the characters. What was the exact storyline between the two? Why did Emily and Diego hook up in the first place?

Thanks for sharing this with us.
I'd half-forgotten Mike (with his very very professionally styled hair by this point - what would Alexander Cabot have said) was still around. Not much longer for him.
The Holden and Lucinda scenes weren't too bad. I liked that they were forced to have actual conversations. FMB made two good decisions with Holden - bringing his memory back (even if it wasn't technically possible - who cares, it's not real life) and mending his relationship with Lucinda. Lucinda prattling away is a little annoying, but amuses me and helps pass through such silly ideas like electro-wiring the door. I remember Hubbard saying she wanted to ad-lib a line about how Lucinda had managed to use the bathroom, but FMB said no. Hubbard put up with such mediocre writing for so many years that I always wonder just how bad it got with FMB that this was the one time Hubbard truly had enough and quit.
I remember a lot of fan debate over whether the show was doing the "redeemed by rape" or "punishment" stories for Emily, and whether this was acceptable. How far we've fallen in daytime where this type of scene would today likely be done as a joke or as something "hot." I didn't care for this story all that much, and I thought this era played up the histrionic nature of KMH's Emily way too much, but this was a strong performance from her, and a good way to show people just how evil Diego truly was.
Even with the depleted Hughes clan, the scenes are very moving, especially Don Hastings' performance. I guess it helps that this was one of the first times Kim ever had a health crisis. At least they remembered Andy, and brought him back for Kim's next health crisis.
Ryder wandering around with that huge envelope amuses me. Ryder was...well, he was there. I wish they'd had him open it and it turns it was Publisher's Clearinghouse.
It's nice to see a little of John's concern for Kim and his unease about his ability. I'd forgotten how the soaps at this time felt the big need to compete with ER so we started getting all the surgery scenes.
Larry B was such an understated actor.
John/Barbara was one of those pairings that always baffled me, but for family conflict, it worked. I wish they'd let their baby live - imagine the drama.

Ken George Jones I don't know for sure what Doug Marland had planned for all things Kasnoff, but the clan was surely a bore to me even when Mike was its lone member. Some edge could have come about through Mike actually taking Alexander's money to further his racing career. Oh well.
Yes, Holden's memory matter was surgically removed in New York. I could have tolerated him never getting it back but still wanting Lily anyway. Teaming him up with Lucinda for a change was indeed a nice change. It seems to me that Lucinda marrying James was the straw to break the camel's back for La Hubbard. Then again, as a device to curb James' threats, it could make sense. I would have been far more peeved about suddenly being the mother of Stenbeck's child when they clearly never knew each other before his first resurrection.
Emily's rape was a missed opportunity. On one hand, the plot could have broken into an examination of her lousy choices with men and Dan's absence. Furthermore she eventually turned to a fellow rape victim, but wound up getting pregnant by the woman's husband. So odd. I hate that it had no long lasting consequences in the ways that Iva or Margo might have experienced.
How convenient is it that Frannie nor Sabrina could show up for Kim's life altering surgery? ATWT was long past the era when a day player was enlisted to replace an actor for brief visits. Betsy didn't even call. Soaps have always been so stupid about their out of sight, out of mind policy. The Ryder experiment was very Goutmanesque. Bring on an aged character who has deep family ties, but zap away their appeal. It's like following and breaking Marland's rules in one fell swoop.
A man in his 60's should definitely consider his ability to perform open heart surgery. John could have been equally shaken up by the thought of what befell Eduardo, even if he was vindicated. Of course the patient would intimidate him automatically, not that he should operate on his ex-wife anyway. Larry Bryggman is the only actor who I've ever read interviews of coded if not outright disdain for soap work. I distinctly recall a quote of him saying "we all phone it in." When I think about it and see him left to eat Liz Hubbard's dust in old scenes, his reserve makes sense. As for John & Barbara, they both should've been fixed if you ask me. At least she raised all of her children, for the most part.

Oakdalian Honestly I think even with Marland the Kasnoffs would have been dull. The brooding hunks in tight blue jeans had become so dull in his last years writing - the corporate guys like Evan were more fun.
I remember at the time that I was annoyed there was no mention of Frannie, and surprised that they even remember to mention Andy. I have so little use for some of the people in charge of ATWT's last 10-15 years that when they do mention someone (like Bob mentioning Andy, Frannie and Sabrina in the last Christmas or Thanksgiving show) I assume the actor came up with it.
I think one of the main complaints some fans had with Holden after losing his memories is that he was much colder toward his family. For that reason I was happy to see him get them back, but then again, other than Emma we rarely saw most of his family after this (aside from cousins, and much later, Meg).
I sometimes wonder if it was personality conflicts or writing that bothered Hubbard. She said in one of her exit interviews that FMB had told her they could have a gag reel of her called, "Liz Unleashed." Didn't sound like it was meant fondly. I tend to assume most of the people who produced ATWT let Liz do her thing; maybe FMB didn't. Or maybe I'm being unfair. We'll never know.
I liked that Emily and Margo bonded. I know it was "soapy" that she then ruined Margo's life and took her husband, but it was just so unpleasant, and it destroyed Emily for me. Emily was never just a bitch or a schemer. She was supposed to be layered, an anti-heroine.

Ken George Jones The problem is that those hunks are always better seen and not heard. They're not cast for having a way with Shakespeare, that's for sure. Every family needs a particular circumstance, and we'll never know what the Kasnoffs' was, unfortunately. Marland definitely did well with the Snyders, Franklins, Walshes, Griffins, etc. I just don't know what Mark wanted besides a treehouse, or Sarah besides Paul.
The hardest part about Emily's betrayal of Margo was that Tom played into it willingly. It finally gave Emily a kid, but he became a fool in the process. Again, just another plot written by people unable to use nuances from history. Emily regained her brokenness, at least. Fortunately Daniel is a product of the families that ATWT began with. That boy would be a foolproof character to write for. Just imagine, Lisa and Susan are your grandmothers! He should be raising hell with Hope Dixon & Faith Snyder.

Oakdalian I know Marland's backstory for the Kasnoffs was supposed to be that they were abused. I can't remember if that was mentioned onscreen. I think they may have given it to Jack and Brad instead.
You could have done a lot with Daniel, instead of characters like Craig's long lost son from Montega.

      @Oakdalian  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Ken George Jones Hmmm, I don't remember Jack & Brad having abuse in their backstories. It's one subject that soaps never tackled effectively.
Craig needed a surprise son like a hole in the head. I thought I had one in mine, watching them get acquainted. Worst plot device in the genre, if you ask me. Gorgeous actor playing the part, though.
