Upgrading my PC with a cheap AliExpress motherboard

- My prebuilt ASUS ROG gaming PC has a bit of an upgrade problem, and that is the motherboard. I had no idea that the last bios update for it came out in 2020, and as such, it doesn't work with Ryzen 5000 series CPUs.
After looking for a cheap replacement I came across the Maxsun B550M Terminator, listed on both AliExpress and Amazon. It was cheaper than pretty much every other AM4 board I could find so I thought I'd give it a try.
Bryan over at TechYesCity also reviewed one of these a few months back (albeit with different branding). You can find that video here:

There is 1 difference between the Soyo and Maxsun mobo. The Maxsun motherboard is with reinforced pcie slots. If you plan on buying one of those and the prices is the same, definitely get the Maxsun one.
I did not know this, thanks
Thanks for pointing this out
Maxsun, in my experience, is one of the most reliable among Chinese brands, good choice mate.
Awesome, that’s good to know
Imagine if Xiaomi entered the PC parts market, they'd absolutely demolish everyone else
@@CrocoDylianVTtrue 😅
@@CrocoDylianVT They already did, at least laptop market, and TV, Networking, and pretty much everything else, vacuum cleaner, dashcam, recorder, camera, cctv, there are many other things, and no they didn't became and/or demolish everyone else, they are just doing ok, some departments even struggling.
@@blebekblebekI believe he means to say that if xiaomi entered the motherboard market they could sell at incredibly underpriced prices.
Love that you referenced TechYes City. Bryan is a gem.

@@RandomGaminginHD As an American, you both are really relaxing to watch, very laid back reviews of lower end or older parts. Your approach to hardware is much like mine.
I've always appreciated how you daily drive products you check out. Even I feel guilty when a friend gives me their old parts and they end up sitting in a bin for months
Wow, nice budget motherboard! However, the VRM seems a bit underpowered. Nonetheless, since AM4 CPUs are generally power-efficient, it should still perform adequately.
But one day it might go boom
6phase vrm should be fine, as long you're not planning on overclocking
From what I've seen it doesn't have any issues running 8 core cpus and if people tinker a bit and lower some specs it might even handle 5950x, although of course I wouldn't recommend it. If you are getting such an expensive/powerful cpu might as well invest a bit more into the motherboard.
@@OcelotSFI've never heard a motherboard could explode
@@zedboiiiCapacitors blow out with a popping sound, a burning smell, and sometimes scorch marks on the motherboard.
Nice, so Asus isn't just blocking you from updating, they're also leaving you vulnerable to the Zen 2 vulnerabilities that have been discovered in the last few months and that they've fixed on their older motherboards, for instance even my fairly crappy Prime B450 Plus has received three updates focused on vulnerabilities lately, the last one released earlier this month, says "Recommended for VITAL update to mitigate the potential security vulnerabilities" my emphasis on vital. That's some stellar support.
Asus is very good on bios updates.
Most of the security vulnerabilities are just if the hacker has physical access to that computer/motherboard so let's say 99% of those cases are just if the hacker has physical access which they probably don't and will never have access. But hey, you do you. Some updates may come with performance improvements and that's a thing that you're really gonna miss out on if you don't get BIOS updates.
Chances that any user will be affected by this vulnerabilities is basically zero, as it was with intel ones. Consumers pay with performance for the security of business sector.
I always love the 1-3-4 PCIe layout, some motherboard maker are such an absolute tool for putting 1x PCIe slot below where we put 2-slot graphics card.
I relate with this on a personal level (Gigabyte H510m S2H)
I prefer layouts which have the x1 slot at the top in the same row as the main M.2 slot, where it won't interfere with a 3-slot graphics card; but this is obviously the next best alternative. I don't know why any motherboard manufacturer bothers wasting their time, effort, and manufacturing capacity on slots which no-one is ever going to use.
I was *this* close to picking up this board two months ago. It was the rebrand (SOYO) being sold for $85 (tax included). But because the warranty is questionable, I chose AsRock B550M Pro4 instead. It has better I/O, more M.2, more USB, better I/O shield, more SATA cable, and I think better VRM.
i have ASROCK b550m pro 4 with a 5800x and sapphire 6900xt toxic edition. This is one of the best cheap b550s with no compromises. The bios is pretty decent too and ive gotten some good overclocks on this system, dont forget to use PBO by the way. It also does have really good vrm in my opinion but then again i have a corsair 5000d and 7 140m noctua fans.
Really the only problem with it is no wifi card, but i bought a pcie wifi card and everything works just fine. The IO is great and im honestly in love with this computer.
super solid mate! @@csgosniperelitepro
Love the vid, thank you. Such consistent and enjoyable content, even with the house renovations 😬
RE-BAR is usually hidden if you have Above 4G decoding disabled. So try finding that first, turn that on and then RE-BAR option should appear. Or just update the BIOS to the latest and then find out if the options are there.
What's 4G decoding?
im pretty sure 4g decoding allows for 32bit words bigger then 4g?
Above 4G Decoding
Enables or disables 64-bit capable devices to be decoded in above 4 GB address space (only if your system
supports 64-bit PCI decoding). Set to Enabled if more than one advanced graphics card are installed and
their drivers are not able to be launched when entering the operating system (because of the limited 4 GB
memory address space). (Default: Disabled)

You're a good friend for calling off that sale.
B550 Terminator, the name alone warrants a purchase.
I like the idea of having a 5800x3d on this cheap board and seeing how long it lasts and how the CPU lasts performance wise over the next couple of years
Yeah think I’ll go for it :)
This is the content I love on this channel
Good stuff, my dude. Appreciate the video. Keep at it.

Nice and sleek board! Reminds me a bit of my B450 Tomahawk with things stripped from here and there :D Especially that VRM heatsink look similar.
Then maybe is made by the same company that makes those boards because maybe all of the PC components are either made in asian countries or assembled there soo...
That box art "B550M" text bit being in the common TH-cam video BIG BOLD LETTERS font gave me a chuckle
Nice review. Haven't ordered any boards off AliExpress.
5800x3d is simply amazing. I've got mine paired with a Asus tuf 4070ti on a MSI B550 Mag Tomahawk and it's powering through everything.
Keeping it cool with a NH-15D cooler in a 5000D airflow case.
yeah ive heard only good things. Going to look for a good deal on a used one!
i have this mobo for almost 1 year now, paired with an ryzen 5 5600 and rx 6600, pretty good mobo without any big compromises compared with more expensives mobos
Nice review, and benchmark, could help alot if you could add links to the specific board you test,so one can go direct to purchase knowing he will get exact one
The fact that he is outside make me happy
That board is a bargain, nice one!!
It's quite bizarre to see VGA output in these boards.
Me too.
I had to go out of my way to get one with that kind of port.
Ended up with a Colourful x370 board. (And the catch is, although there is a VGA output, it's actually listed as a DP output in Linux. It probably has some sort of conversor built in)
It's nice to see some modern am5 motherboards with VGA as an option.
Yeah, just for the sake of some testing!
I really enjoy your videos buddy, nice one! I just got an aliexpress RX 5700, I did a bit of research first so I feel that it will be a good one, my next build Ryzen 9 3900x, it's a good budget choice for music mostly....have a fun weekend! ;D
*Which brand? I've review random Aliexpress GPUs*
I legit bought one of these pcs haha from Facebook for £200 2 days ago but it was a Ryzen 5 5600x and 1650 but swapped out the graphics card to a 6600 and it’s such a beast
A few months ago I got an Asrock B550 motherboard with wireless for 99.99 USD through New Egg. Comes to basically $80 pounds. It has 4 ram slots instead of 2. Out of the box I dropped a Ryzen 5 5500 on the board. For the extra cost I would argue it is worth it to buy an Asrock, especially when wireless is already on the board.
Earlier this year I was looking to get a Maxsun B660 Terminator Motherboard with a I5-12400T CPU due to not only being cheaper than most B660 boards, but it was the only MATX board with 3 M.2 ports. However I came across a sweet deal on eBay for a ASUS Z690 Prime motherboard with a I5-12500T CPU for only $200 In like new condition (The box was the only thing messed up). I saved a lot more money, I got the same 3 M.2 ports, but I had to settle with a full size ATX motherboard (I really wanted a smaller motherboard).
7:30 that artifacting
Omg,I have an instant nostalgic surge to buy that board just for the sake of the box itself!Miss that kind of designs, mobo boxes are so boring nowadays!
Just ordered the Soyo B550m Dragon for my second build. Looking forward to a 'Soyo' board again after so many years 😊
Yo bro how was the soyo motherboard is it worth it ?
Great video! I’ve been wanting to get a cheap (but also reliable) B550 to replace my B450 so I can take advantage of PCIe 4.0 SSDs, or even newer GPUs like the 4070 that may be impacted by running on PCIe 3.0 due to its 192-bit bus. (Unpopular opinion) but Ryzen Master is actually pretty useful. I have basically zero experience with Intel XTU but I’d imagine it’s the same premise. But the 5600 has to be my favorite modern 6c/12t chip. Much like its predecessors (1600, 1600AF/2600, & 3600) it offers a very great balance between performance, cost, and power draw. With a 4.8Ghz OC + undervolt it’s an absolute powerhouse. Single core score is almost identical to a stock 5900x/5950x, and multi-core is above a 2700x/very close to a 3700x. Power draw is less than 100w 99% of the time, & temps go no higher than 75c max - which is only if the ambient temp in my room is warm (80F+), with the central AC running it won’t even break 70c. And that’s just with a Wraith Prism cooler, which isn’t known to be particularly amazing when compared to some aftermarket air coolers.
Want reliable?
Then don't get some cheap ass crap like this.
The Amazon reviews alone should make you avoid this POS like the plague.
B550 doesn't do .40 anyway. You need 570.
@@x808drifterwhat is .40
That looks like a MSI board, bios settings are almost identically named, package looks like one too
No waaay! There is a workaround for this. Just flash another bios onto it from the asus prime b450m-k. I had the ga 15dh version of it and wanted to enable rebar but the bios was ancient. Reflashed another bios and all good. Please make sure to properly confirm dimensions and that the bios you're goingto flash comes from a motherboard that looks identical to yours(except the paintjob). There are some reddit stuff about it as well to help you out. If you have the glass sidepanel version with the rgb strips , it won't work with armor crate after the bios flash so use openrgb to set up some lights and that's it.
Hey, uh.. i hope that GA15DH board are still okay. The board schematics are similiar with Prime B450M K, soo maybe you could give it a shot crossflashing Prime B450M K bios to that GA15DH board, using flashrom 1.2, and see if it works. If it does, then that board would have the up to date bios (since the bios is now b450m k, it will recognize any b450m k bioses).
Just keep in mind to always dump the stock bios of that GA15DH since it contains MAC address. Flashrom would write the bios 1:1 so the mac address might need to be inserted to clean B450M K bios before using flashrom. Also need to extract the .cap so that you could flash the bios, without the .cap header. If you need help maybe i could help.
An ok thanks. I’ll give that a go
@@RandomGaminginHD Hello , I think buying buget mobo with 2 ram slots is pointless , that limit very easy future upgrate , I would rather save cash on CPU at the begining , I myself will be doing soon upgrate I go with Ryzen 5 4500 , and with 4 slot A520M SD3H cost in Sweden 919 kr vs A520MH 799kr = 120kr (around 12$) difference for 2 extra ram slots , in my opinion that is worth it , as I will do now light gaming World of Warships , so Ryzen 5 4500 is good for me , but xmas next year , I will change it for better Ryzen that will fit mobo after bios update , so now 16gb ram in 2 stick is enough for me , but later on I can buy 2 more ,easy upgrate.

I have this board's "sister" from SOYO. Used it for over a year now. The only downside i can tell you about is that CPU Cooler, RAM and GPU are very close together, turns replacing CPU/RAM into having to unplug GPU as well to access things. Plus big coolers might get tight with the RAM modules, that's about it.
Yeah the RAM is really close to my tower cooler, made a video with my build.
Have to say my old B350 from Gigabyte is well supported, was going to buy a B550 checked the BIOS updates and it supports all modern CPU's.
That's really interesting.
Not the one for me, as it doesn't have enough PCIe slots, but maybe I can check their range to see if they have something that might be more my speed.
I work piecemeal for budget reasons, and my storage is spanned over many drives(I want all my games on my computer at all times, you never know when the urge to play a certain game will pop up, and I've had enough of long (down)loading times since upgrading from tape drive to floppy disks in 1992) and would need at least 4 SATA slots and 1 NVMe with space for upgrading via PCIe.
Please do an upgraded Xeon build! so many options out there now!
Your mom is very wise ❤
super glad I bought the Fatal1ty AMD K4 which BIOS were updated to work with 5000 series. rocking a 5900x on a B350 and runs fine, wish I could have found the 5800x3d
I think it has something to do with BIOS chip sizes, because the board makers probably didn't know how large they would need to get, and because even a fraction of a cent counts when we're talking about tens of thousands of units.
Tiny editing suggestion since your channel is 99% PC Gaming; Gaming with a mouse/keyboard combo and screen capturing that footage vs the controller setup is much more visually appealing. The sharp 'joystick flicks' aren't quite as polished as it could otherwise be. Why was the CPU temp so high just being in the bios? It seemed to stay at about 70c whether you were in the bios or gaming
I have a really obscure Jginyue chinese motherboard. mini ITX form factor, B760 chipset, cheaper than anything on the market that even comes close. Working absolutely fine with my 13400F. The bios is the same one as the maxsun with a few visual tweaks.

i put this mobo in my young daughter's PC i built for her. this is after i had to return a gigabyte motherboard because it wouldn't post. this thing was cheap and works great
How do you call 4.6 OC? that's all core turbo by default if you enable precision boost.
I've been meaning to get a new board for my Ryzen 9 5950X as well as a new case for better cooling
If you have a 5700X that has a chance of working, i've noticed that many of these OEM style boards only include microcode for the 'common' CPUs, odd, because i would think the G series would be the primary target for these low cost systems
But again, its a small chance, as my Asrock boards didnt work this way and my only Asus(AMD) board is an X570
you csn try to flash bios from Prime B450M-K Motherboard, its exactly na retail version of the Motherboard used on this PC
may have to pick one of these up for my old r5 2600, wouldnt mind using this board for a cheap home server!
Will need to downgrade the BIOS to support 2xxx CPUs, I put one in my build with a 5600 a few days ago.
I found them on Amazon, maybe one or two weeks ago, also said they sell gpu’s.
That board seems amazing though I wouldn't put anything with an x rated cpu on that board
Do not forget VRM temps too.
nice bios cool rezolt ey .
I don't think saving 20$ on motherboard is worth potential problems with warranty, BIOS updates, delivery damage, long waiting time, etc.
For example, my AsRock B450 Gaming K4 which I bought in February 2019 has latest stable BIOS published in October 2022 "to improve RTX 4000 series compatibility", and Beta from July 2023.
In April of 2022 I upgraded Ryzen 2600 to 5600X, when MB was already 3 years old. I don't think Chinese noname board will be supported after 3 years.
How do you know they're not getting BIOS updates? Wouldn't the Asian market not buy these if that were the case?
Would it be a good idea to build an Ryzen 1,2 system an later upgrade to 5th gen? While having a compatible board, ofc.
I have a question if i want to buy a used gpu doing furmark test is enough for checking the gpu
how is that cpu sat at 69c in the bios with that cooler?
I'm thinking of upgrading an A320i motherboard. It's a fully business centric board with ECC support and AES 256 support. Thinking an A2000 or a 4060LP for gpu. CPU might be a 5700X.
4060LP is definitely a better option
Dawid Does Tech Stuff released a video comparing the 2 just this morning
The 4060 is so much better than the a2000 in gaming. Also, you get 8gb of vram instead of 6gb and better video out at roughly the same price. A2000 being slightly more expensive.
@@activeentropy a2000 has 12 gig variants, but the 4060 is muchhh faster (basically a 3050 vs 4060)

There is not much difference between the stock processor and the overclocked one. I recommend using the stock one and lowering the voltage a little to prevent it from degrading prematurely.
Not bad for those who require an AM4 board on a budget, whilst still supporting the last released CPU's for the AM4 platform.
I don't like it only having 2 RAM slots and 4 SATA slots, though. 4 RAM slots is a must for me so I can install 128GB of RAM.
i got 128GB of memory and the most i have ever used has been 50GB of ram mainly it uses around 22GB of memory
its amazing with the more memory the faster the computer can process and the less power you use running programs
i honestly do not need 128GB of memory i only bought it to max out my motherboard
the only thing that sucks is i found out if you buy anything off ebay than he isn't covered by warranty.
