- The sound of a military instructor barking at troops is perhaps a familiar sound to personnel past and present.
But now, the British Army is changing the way it treats recruits.
Brigadier Andrew Garner, Commandant of the Soldier Academy, told Forces News recruits might have historically feared their instructor but that is not what the Army is now trying to achieve.

The recruitment pool comes from a different world, and the teaching methods need to change accordingly
The end result is what matters, not the way you get them there. The goal is to reduce how many drop out before you can get them into the correct mindset and ability for war.

The "recruit pool" always comes from a different generation/mind-set. The "sorting" must happen early or time and money is wasted on "prospecting". Preparatory courses can reduce the number of prospects that probably won't successful complete training.

Shouting isn't constructive for teaching. Obviously basic will include a lot of shouting as it's need like combat and drill but I think the point is they shouldn't be making people fear instructors but respect them as the brigadier said. I think the guys point about the SAS is that people are there to learn to do a job. Being shouted at for a minor mistake might be making good recruits leave. A better approach may be, you messed up you can do x to fix it. Obviously shouting will never go away
Went through Guards Depot Pirbright during the 1960s. It never done us any harm !!! Shouted at morning noon and night, riffted to within an inch of your life ! Cuts the Corn from the chaff,What are you doing ? Producing fighting soldiers, or mummy's boys and girls. For god's sake, get a grip.

Went through it at the end of the 70’s at the guards depot never did me any harm,, taking an order shouting in a tank, well their wasn’t any discussion then we did what we were told, it saves lives
They first time the enemy shouts at them they burst into tears. I always thought basic was too knock the civilian out of you and toughen you up.
With an army that's well below 70k troops we won't be engaging any enemies anytime soon

A progressive and inclusive Army, which treats its subordinates with empathy and compassion.. this is a top-down mandate from the leaders. Attributes that may be better suited to peacekeeping than fighting. Soldiers should be conditioned mentally and physically for the reality of war.

I joined the Army as a 16 year old and our Company Sgt Major was a Grenadier Guardsman. Ever since then all through my working life I've never been upset by a bollocking...I've been bollocked by experts!

Are they nuts? If you can't take someone shouting at you, how will you handle someone shooting at you? There was a reason basic training was as it was. And a certain amount of weeding out was required.

I often found the fearful NCO on the parade ground to be patient and informative in the classroom, both parties need to know who's in charge when the time comes.

The reason I wanted to join the army was to get away from this sort of softness. I may as well work in a spa now. Someone needs to do something and quickly.

Part of the screaming at you is to put you under pressure and stress, the reason is simple, if you can perform under the pressure and stress of your sgt's then you are more likely to perform in the chaos of battle. its a well tried and tested system over hundreds of years.

I never passed basic training in ‘93 and for good reason, I was too soft for a life in the Army. Some people are not meant for it, so weed them out. Jesus Christ the UK has lost the plot!

it's not empathic to lessen effectiveness, discipline which ends up getting you killed , if recruits can't take it, then they have no place in the Army as being shouted at is the least of their concern if a conflict happens

There probally at the end of there service, he isnt fighting anymore, just training or doing office work.
Some soldiers after 22 years of service get two choices which are discharge or do another 3 more years but you wont be in a combat role anymore, its very common for people taking on those extra 3 years to get fat.

There needs to be a healthy balance between discipline and humane treatment. I was above average when it came to motivation, but when sadistic instructors hand out beastings and hurl out insults left and right, even I lose my will to soldier. Senseless cruelty creates a toxic environment and the actual content of training gets lost. However when it’s done too lax, soldiers get underprepared and easily overwhelmed when pressure increases. I saw both extremes in practice within a six month timeframe
For their next update, rifles will be replaced with feather dusters.
There is a time for empathy but you also need to be tough and aggressive and not get upset because you are shouted at.

"if they are here, the army has deemed them suitable, it's our job to get them over the line" yup, that's the problem right there. Some office staff somewhere has deemed them suitable because they have targets to reach and the medical/ fitness standards have been lowered to help them meet those targets. It's now left to the trainers, who disagree with the nonsense, to cajole them up to passimg out parade by being nice, friendly and supportive. Then they go to their respective regiment and learn what the real job looks like.

I joined the household division in 1981. We were physically and mentally broken. We were then built back to the best soldiers in the world. That mamby pamby, let's hold your hand, will destroy morale within the service. Whoever signed this mummery off needs their head checking...
Everyone slating this is just arrogant, this is revolutionary and visionary. Leaked documents have shown the Chinese and Russians have developed new super weapons known as “Care Bears” wild bears trained to hug and console the enemy to death. Conditioning recruits to tolerate inconceivable amounts of empathy is definitely the way to combat this new threat.

Sergeant - first squad, standby to assault that enemy bunker! First squad private, sorry sarge, I'm a bit tired and I promised to phone my grandmother, she's not well you know. Another squad member - please could you stop shouting I've got a slight headache, also I left my ammo back at base because it's much too heavy, I feel for you sarge and I realised that if we don't take the bunker this whole attack will grind to a halt, but thats your problem not ours, perhaps you could ask the guys in the bunker to stop firing because they are being much too noisy, cheers sarge.

I think there’s a fundamental loss of understanding here, for and against, within and without. The reason militaries throughout the ages presented a harsh and austere life was not simple communication but it was to encourage a particular mentality and worldview, one that is particularly out of fashion today, stoicism. If you’re shouting without knowing that or you refuse to shout without knowing that then you’re equally wrong, the intent is to apply discomfort as a means of encouraging a mental fortitude that could exist in a vacuum (heresy today of course).

An instructor explained to us during basic training that shouting instructions and orders were intended to get us into the habit of obeying orders instinctively, something that in the heat of combat could help keep you alive.

I went through military training in the late 80's and the bullying was on another level I'm talking actual physical assaults as well as verbal degrading. We all made it though and it made me who I am today.

If I mind right, getting shouted at all the time helped soldiers get use to 1 aspect of a chaotic environments (war and conflict). When they go to those environments, they are going to freeze up more and become more of a hazard now 😔😔

Shouting and screaming replicates the chaos the soldiers will encounter during war environment. It trains the soldiers focus on orders and instructions and follow them instinctively while hell is breaking loose all around them. Mind stress training like these will mean life or death in real war environment.
Words fail me, how pathetic, i guess the famous Monty Python sketch comes to mind, with the drill instruction on the square and he lets everyone go because they would rather be doing something else, so he is left alone to march himself up and down the square. Oh, dear my words didn't fail me. How pathetic, how criminal is this, it's part of the process, to build people up into a team and work together, it hardens you. I would how they will teach bayonet practice then, as thats is an evil one to teach if you cannot be angry with anyone. The laughing stock of the world, and that goes with the stupid beards they have today as well.

There’s nothing wrong with not shouting the SAS do their selection that way. The DS just tells you what to do once and if you don’t do it you’re gone. The problem with it in the rest of the armed forces is that they still need to be strict about it.
The guys who are on selection for the SAS are trained soldiers these are recruits. Big difference

The people making these decisions clearly don't understand what the point of all that yelling and hostility was. It's to inoculate recruits to having to live in fear 24/7, and to weed out the ones who can't adapt to it.
what if the enemy uses CAPS LOCK on us. Will our special forces be trained to handle CLAPPING and SWEAR WORDS and skilled in the arts of listening to Offensive Comedy etc. And do they need parent's permission to enroll. Can we change the Poppy to Pansies too ; )

Shouting isn't to berate. It's one of many tools used to instill the level of discipline necessary to mold a civilian into an order taking war fighter. Combat will hurt your feelings, among parts of the mind and body. A front line unit can't afford to have people who are concerned about getting their feelings hurt. There are just somethings the protected will never understand.
The purpose of harsh treatment in drilling is to break through resistance to discipline that saves lives. This will get soldiers killed and make them less effective at winning battles.

They will be teaching them to ballet dance and do tap dancing next and maybe morris dancing for parades !
