  • Steppenwolf mimes to "It's Never Too Late" in 1969. During the interview afterwards it's revealed that Nick St. Nicholas' fave group is The Fugs! I'm sure Ed knew exactly who he was talking about ;-)
    Michael Monarch - gtr
    Jerry Edmonton - drms
    John Kay - vox
    Nick St Nicholas - bs
    Goldy McJohn - orgn

Not So Fun Fact: Rushton Moreve, original bassist for Steppenwolf, who's seen in this clip (and in the thumbnail), would eventually be the first member of the band to lose his life; in Rushton's case in a car accident.

During the interview, did Goldy say Jimmy Smits?! How 🤔 ❓️ could've Goldy possibly known who he was back then? But seriously, it seems more likely that he said Jimmy Smith, whom I can't say that I've heard of.

After I got out of the Marine Corps, I use to listen to this song before I graduated college and it just had this stinging truth to it. I thought I was on top of the world being a college graduate, the first in my family, but had no idea what I was going to do next. Currently, I am a teacher! There is a place for everyone in this world, remember that when you don't know what to do!

The "Fugs," Ed. F-U-G-S. Sullivan was, of course, totally un-hip. Yet, he sensed the pulse of the times, and knew what he needed to do to maximize his audience and, of course, keep those advertising dollars coming in. He is to be credited with acknowledging and for the most part respecting America's youth culture, come what may.

Most unfortunate that the "Hall" in Cleveland has yet to recognize Steppenwolf. Commercial success, critical acclaim, cultural prominence and political consciousness personified through exceptional songwriting and musicianship, while influencing and inspiring a generation of songwriters and musicians. Their attributes and accolades exceed the criteria beyond what the Hall demands of its members for induction. Of the original Steppenwolf, only John Kay remains. RIP John Raymond "Goldy McJohn" Goadsby, Jerry Edmonton and Rushton Moreve.

Ed Sullivan could butte heads with people as various books have stated but he also could be very kind and did not have aversion towards rocknroll era like Dean Martin , Mitch Miller and Steve Allen. I think Allen changed over the years. Steppenwolf had a lot of great songs . They were even nominted for RocknRoll Hall Of Fame one year but didn't make although they got 100 k fan votes including mine Grandmaster Flash in there and Dusty Springfield but no Steppenwolf.

Ed Sullivan knew "good" no matter what the genre. He really had Diana Ross and the Supremes on a lot, and The Animals. And a lot of Opera singers. He really did appreciate the arts, in all it's forms. I wish he had had The Young Rascals on more though. There's just not enough recordings of those guys.

Nick did wear a jock strap and bunny ears at the beginning of '69 (Fillmore East, March '69), but he was in the band for a year after that. In fact, that incident had already occurred by the time they were on Ed Sullivan. In JK's book it's depicted as Nick being fired immediately after the bunny ears gig, but John got that wrong.

Nick, Goldy, Kent and even Rushton Moreve were in the bogus bands, but not John or Jerry.

My mother bought me a Steppenwolf album about 1973. I was 15 years old. I must have played this song It’s never too late literally hundreds and hundreds of time! It reminded me so much of a girl I had a crush on in school. The funny thing was she didn’t even look at me or even knew I was so into her! Funny thing is It’s never too late to start all over again it never started in the first place!! LOL

Singing live to a pre-recorded track.Ed had to stop the interview long enough for the people to stop clapping. Great performance. Don't forget this is a New York audience. And they love the LA group Steppenwolf.
