I'm only 45 yrs old and I fell in love with songs like, magic carpet ride & born to be wide. But fortunately I indulged myself further. One of my favorite band along withTom Waits , The Guess who. Pink floyd
I was a police officer in a college town from late 67 to 89. Can't count the number of overdose deaths I went to. All young. John does a great job on this Hoyt Axton tune.
John's been one of my favorites since I was young. Mom came from Germany shortly before John for the opportunities here. I'm glad shes not here to see the current state of things. Over 40 years in fire. EMS, tech rescue, dive team, chaplains corp., etc. on top of my 'real job' travelling nine states fixing industrial and institutional boilers, furnaces, chillers, coal mine ventilation, etc. Most of my public service was volunteer- sometimes 300+ hours a month to keep the trucks manned. Too many bags with zippers, mangled bodies, dissolved lives ----- Didn't really have organized cisd back then did have Jack, Jim, Turkey, Steppenwolf, Yes, Zeppelin, and nights around the campfires. By God's Grace we made it.
I remember playing this song on my grandpa's record player when I was 15 years old. Steppenwolf 7 is a great album I still listen to it to this very day.
John Kay just love you ❤️. I seen you in concert 4 times from the 70s to 90s. I even followed your bus for miles to hotel to get your autograph, that all I got lol. Still have it.
Mr. Jerry Edmonton ; on drums = HE N A I L E D IT = PERFECT, IN ALL ASPECTS ; timing, dynamics, accents, ghost notes....HE did it all, and that is WHAT MAKES A BAND = TIMELESS ! Atta boy, men ; ALL together, in expressing the emotions, of those wonderfull, TRUE LYRICS . Good work Mr John Kay, and your lifes' work, of ' giving ' ! WOW. Band for the ages , as well as 3 Dog Night, Boston, James Gang, 5 man Electrical Band, some of Paul McCartneys' early 70' s stuff....Steve Miller Band, James Last Orchestra, Mitch Miller, and an extended list, of hundreds of others. Mr. Perez, guitar of THE MAVERICKS, another grand - master, of this as well.......anyway....
My second favorite band my third favorite drummer Mr Jerry Edmonton who died in a car crash way too early a most awesome group John Kay excellent songwriter performer very professional and he had a hard time getting started but once he got there yeah thank you very much I appreciate it be safe be peaceful
Steppenwolf has to be one of the most underated bands ever I have a great admiration for John Kay who is now involved in animal protection a truly dedication
Hoyt Axton ,who was the father in the Gremlins, wrote alot of great songs, including the pusher.this is a awesome song.bought step 7 because of this song.
Great clip, Kayodleman. Thanks for posting a great memory of mine. Musically, the years between '68 - '73 were awesome. We had a local college radio station at Wake Forest (the 1st FM station - after 11pm) that played deep cuts. They were albums, front to back with no commercials. My older brother and I listened to (and taped on a reel to reel) some music that changed our lives. This was one of them. Thanks again!
Growing up where I did in West Texas, I never got to see them. Man I would have loved that. Stephen Stills said they were a favorite of his live (or so I read). I don't think about HoF anymore. Screw the HoF guys.
Growing up as a military brat 71-72 living on Incirlik AFB Adana Turkey there was one television channel & there were music videos done by bands or perhaps by the servicemen who ran the television broadcasts... Anyway there was a video done for this song that still runs through my mind... For those who don't know in that time snow was slang for heroin not cocaine... And with all the poppy fields around Turkey & the hash dens I'm sure this song was chosen for a video on the military television programming in the hope of preventing even just one more young serviceman becoming snow-blind...
Such a great song in the 70s lots of snowblind young people like that me being one , I'm lucky I had lots of support but it was still very hard , When I hear this song it reminds me of the Meth I was addicted too I can remember the smell and the taste, It took my life over , I'm so glad for having help seeing other people dying running this shit up, It's terrible lives destroyed.
Saw him last time at the Faro's biker meeting, almost 50 years after the first time... Unassuming, as always, but Steppenwolf's songs went always further than any other, be it this one, For Ladies Only, The Pusher, Monster and really everything...
A one of a kind tune in an earlier place and time performed by Steppenwolf , aka Joachim Fritz Krauledat, born in Tilsit, East Prussia, immigrated to Waterloo, Ontario ,Canada, and started musically in a band called the Sparrows. Reply
From Lp's, to 8-tracks, to cassettes, to cd's... Now back to LP's again. Still gives me the same feelings as it first did when I heard songs on AM radio...If their music comes out on a new medium, will have it, too...
One of the first true hard rockin metal bands who pioneered the whole metal movement with a long with bands like deep purple 💜 they paved the way for every Metallica fan out there . Period ! Your listening to one of the original metal ballads long before bret Michaels could hold a pen .
THANK YOU KAYODLEMAN FOR ALL THE GREAT CLIPS. I WISH YOU HAD ONE OF JOHN IN VIDEO PERFORMING MY VERY FAVORITE TUNE..........WALK BESIDE ME..........THAT IS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL SONG. SEE IF YOU CAN FIND IT, IT HAS TO BE OUT THERE SOMEWHERE. THANKS
This song makes me think of Janis Joplin...on her first trip out to California all her friends put her on a bus back home to Texas, scared she would die..she did try to get her life straight..but California and the drugs were too strong a pull, and we know what happened. I think this so was just so pertinent to the times. Young talented people dying left, right and centre.
John Kay ... not pretentious and so articulate. And one of the greatest voices. Thanks for posting these.
I'm only 45 yrs old and I fell in love with songs like, magic carpet ride & born to be wide. But fortunately I indulged myself further. One of my favorite band along withTom Waits , The Guess who. Pink floyd

One of the greatest R&R voices ever.

RIP Gene Carpenter, who this song reminds me of. Accidentally OD
Add Doug(mainvein)Moore. He was a friend but couldn't be satisfied. RIP🌎😔✌
What a voice, he would have made a great country singer!
Maravilloso, lo mejor
🐺 Long live the Wolf, 🇨🇦
Lost 2 many Frends 🚧 ✝️
John Kay, you're wrong. It DOES have a message, a deep one. And that's about all I can say about that.
my first 'rock hero' ... in the early 70s
As a 37-year member of AA, I was saved from alcohol, cocaine, and sunshine acid. John tells and sings the TRUTH. There is a way out.
I've lost so many friends over the years.
So beautiful...
A no none sense kind of
song that will move you
to tears.
John Kay's story is compelling.
Written by and performed by another great Hoyt Axton and he also wrote and performed the pusher

The California lifestyle
