I had a Scout 800 for years very livable on-road as well as on my farm in Pasadena. Nowadays people expect cars to be luxury rigs rather than just workhorses. Plus I have noticed people pay more attention to gizmos and gadges vs the roads. That is why we have urban sprawl, accidents, deaths and moronic drivers. A scout works perfectly well with attentive drivers not so much with spoiled ones. My 2 cents

Hard to imagine that at some point in the past a roof and doors were considered to be a convenience. That being said, I'd love to have the old Scout in my collection. Unlike this new Jeep (or any modern car loaded with electronic stuff) the Scout looks bulletproof enough that it will run 40 years from now with little maintenance.

First off, congrads on finding a Scout that hasn't transitioned into iron oxide. Almost bought a used one back in the early 80s. But, if you don't have the line sheet from the assembly line you can not order parts. The one I looked at needed a from drive shaft. I went into the local dealer to find out what it would cost. Parts man said there were 18 possibilities. Depended on where they sourced the transmission, transfer case and axels from. They were not all the same.

grommet; an eyelet placed in a hole in a sheet or panel to protect or insulate a rope or cable passed through it or to prevent the sheet or panel from being torn....that thing you are turning is called a "knob"... and in 1961 we knew we would be driving gasoline powered cars for the next twenty years plus...now car companies know that in twenty years we will not be using petroleum to get around as these motors lose 70 to 90 percent of their energy to heat rather than forward movement (70 is reserved for diesels) as modern gas motors are 75 percent efficient

(This was the top of the line model with ALL the "luxury" accessories including "AUTO LOCKING HUBS" which could STILL be manually "locked" for heavy duty, ultra "LOW RANGE" 4X4ing through really tough slogging.) Does moving the lever "engage the front axle"? Or does moving the lever engage the front driveshaft? If the Scout had manual hubs, it almost certainly didn't have a front axle disconnect. I realize I'm "picking at gnats" here but please use language that will help youngsters understand how things work/worked.

    • @russlehman2070
      @russlehman2070 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Strictly speaking, it was the front driveshaft (which spins the differential, which spins the axle shafts). The levers controlled the transfer case, which is a gearbox mounted behind the transmission to which both front and rear driveshafts connect. The locking hubs (which were optional, but most Scouts had them) controlled whether the wheels were connected to the front axle. You could leave them engaged if you thought you might need 4wd. Disengaging the hubs in the winter would cause it to snow, every time. :-)

The IH scouts where very popular, so popular it led other companies to copy it like Ford who’s response to the scout was the bronco in 1965. It also led harvester to make some crazy stuff to go with it for example in 1964 they made a weird option you could get a 500 rpm PTO shaft on the scout and in 1972 a back three point implement hitch

My parents had a '62 and a '66 Scout. Guess where my sister and I rode? Yes, on those hard benches in the back. The worst thing was, the joint between the body and the top dug into your back. It was pretty uncomfortable for a kid, and would be worse for an adult. No seat belts ,of course, so I'm sure having kids ride there would now be considered child endangerment.
I learned to drive on that '66 Scout. Not the easiest vehicle to learn on, but if you could drive it, you could drive anything.

That is a clean Scout! When I was a kid, my Dad had a then new '69 IH Travelall 4x4 in Flagstaff, AZ. I honestly think it was in the shop more than it was on the road, and at altitude, (even sometimes in summer in Flag, 7k') it would vapor-lock if you looked at it. Getting the TC even in to 4Hi was a bitch! Not sure if it was a divorced TC. I remember several times having to help my Mom pull the awkwardly designed lever to get it to engage. As soon as the new '73 Suburbans came out, my Dad ran to the dealer and ordered one, and I just sold it last year. An awesome truck that is getting a whole new life: forum.expeditionportal.com/threads/171024-The-Camp-4x4-Bus-1973-Suburban-8-1-Swap-amp-Build?p=2286250

Not trying to rain on your parade, but you do need to learn a bit more about the history of vehicles. Jeep had hardtops available almost from the get go. The Willys wagon and truck both had hardtops in the 40's and the jeepster, was a real covetable or phaeton, and offered refinements of the day. Land Rover offered hardtops all through the 50's, Dodge was making crewcab 4x4 before WWII and really upped the production after the war.
Your IH Travel all is a nice little vehicle, I had an almost identical one in the '90's. Enjoy.

#Pimp ass Scout.. @Tommy! If the budget was there and it were mine, I'd have to bring the suspension & brakes into the 21st century. Get the wheels to sit out flush with the body work & I'd have to line the floor with some sort of sound deadening and carpet.. Last but, not least I'd have to do something with the power plant. Maybe a crate engine from cummins or a 304ci with some mild upgrades (nice lopy cam (nothing crazy), headers, a set of aluminum heads and Holly fuel injection). Things I'd never be able to afford but, if I were in your shoes, I'd certainly be out looking for some sponsorships. After that, your truck could handle the responsibilities of an everyday dependable and comfortable driver. With all of that said, here's my stop so, I'm hoping off the dream train. Also, I can't wait to see the content of when you dragged him outa the big shed and brought em home. Best of luck... Stan from Fort Wayne, Indiana. Home of the International Harvester Plant. The plant is still standing today. I don't know if you've ever seen it but, it's massive. It's the largest plant I've ever been in or seen. Years ago I worked for a small manufacturer that rented a small section within the "old Harvester Plant". So I was able to walk some of the massive corridors with in the plant. Just to give you an idea of its size, many manufacturing companies rent sections of it out. Rather than employees parking out side, everybody that works in the building parks inside the building. You're able to drive the halls that your truck could possibly have driven down.. A lot of history there!

I'll take the Scout anytime. I love jeeps, but only up to 2004. After that, they really don't matter.

Well I think, the International is better, because there is nearly no plastic, all ist metal and it's an real offroad Car, because the Wrangler is with leather and with this it's not really robust

I'd take the '76 Scout II I once had over either of them. It had a V8, power brakes (disk in front) and power steering. OTOH, it got 10 mpg city, and eventually rusted out so bad I had to junk it. Scouts had great power train, suspension and frame, but the bodies were crap.

Didn't we just see this? TFL seems to focusing on more on quantity vs quality of late, and it shows...

I think last time was about pickup truck practicality, not so much as 4WD practicality
well... it would be super cool to see more offloading clips, since they do show the Wranglers a whole lot
