"Trail mode" isn't a new feature for the CX-5!! They just added an individual button to activate it. Off-road or "trail mode" can be activated in older CX-5s (like the 2019 you complained about last year) by disabling traction control. Mazda even details this hidden feature on their website, just search "WHAT’S THE DIFF? MAZDA CX-5 UNLOCKS ‘SECRET’ OFF-ROAD MODE". Your review of the 2019 CX-5 was very frustrating because it had this feature and same capability but somehow you think the 2020 is completely different when it's exactly the same, except they added a button.
Mazda basically overestimated their target market by not including a dedicated button, so in the update they added it. People are too lazy to read manuals or even visit Mazda website nowadays.
i just installed falken AT 245/55/19 on my 2023 carbon edition. They look awesome and performs extremely well on light offloading. this car definitely can haldle rougher trails
In my CX5 2017 owner manual, they said, the model is not recommended for offroad. The AWD system is mainly designed for safety. No scratches on mine on the piano black, guess someone carefully used it. Also has CarPlay. Real pleasure to drive. Love it!
Working in a Mazda dealership now, I'm a bit disappointed of the safety tech. As you tested here the lane keep assist is not good, same rear traffic alert. I think for a brand that wants to be positioned as premium now, I think they have to improve a lot some things yet.
They should have more premium packages/options. It is easy to raise the price but it doesn't necessarily make sense to offer features some people do not care about. Saying that, I do think offering more options is a reasonable idea if Mazda is serious about entering premium market. I'll likely go for 2017 CX-5 AWD diesele soon. It is available in my market and it comes in competitive price, especially considering what it offers in return.
@@valdius85 yes, we get here in NZ Diesel. Don't take me wrong, I think Mazda it's a great product, but if you really care about some tech, and how it works, I think Mazda it's a bit behind. you guys do realise that the trail mode is on all Awd Cx_5's ??? even the older ones, just turn off traction control and it turns into trail mode. they just added the button in the 2020 models because people where too stupid to realise that pff
This is true, Mazda released an update on their website that applies to previous CX-5 models stating that an off-road mode can be activated by pressing the traction control button. There are also plenty of TH-cam videos featuring their engineers talking about this.
Most people buying this car don't need a lot of room. I've seen a lot of reviews comparing it to the CRV. Yes it's smaller but it doesn't matter (in fact it's probably a good thing.
For some people it matters for others it doesn't. For me it is a downside but I'll still chose CX-5 as it comes with standard automatic transmission and a diesel on my market. CR-V offers CVT, terrible AWD and a failing small turbo engine. No amount of trunk space will counterbalance these flawes :)
CX5 was too small for my needs (do a lot of camping). Text drive was also underwhelming, stiff ride especially over pavement and seats much too firm. Opted for RAV4 hybrid XSE with upgraded 235/55R19 wheels, handles nicely yet smooth
I personally like the RAV4, and the hybrid is the best choice (short of the plug in hybrid). I have heard that the engine can be loud on agressive acceleration; is that true? PS I drive a Camry XSE; the XS trim is much more attractive than the LE line.
@@10tenman10 Test drive the RAV4 XSE hybrid to see noise for yourself. In town extremely quiet being in hybrid 1/2 the time. Highway noise pretty good (slightly above average), engine is somewhat loud when you stomp on it but not nearly as loud as gas models as they don't come wifh hood blanket or electric assist (although my dealer said 2020 they added more noise insulation at engines firewall)
Short answer: NO. Long answer: Trail mode uses the fact that it has open differentials, you may know that in an open differential power goes to whichever wheel offers the least resistance to spinning, so having for example a wheel in the air will cause it to spin and spin, this system basically uses the ABS to brake individual wheels which then transfers the motion to the opposite wheel (the one with traction).
More interior room, smoother suspension over potholes and rough roads, comfier seats, better fuel economy, less feminine exterior, bigger infotainment with touch screen.
@@James-il3tq After 6 months of rough roads in Houston, TX, I’ve marveled at how smooth it is over tough roads given it’s got minimal roll in corners and is tall/heavy. The interior space is great for what I need but if I needed more space there are plenty of other cars to look at. I have 3 gripes. The screen brightness is almost never right for me and adjusting it is a lot of clicks. The power band hits a cliff earlier than you expect. The 6 speed is ok but a dsg would set it off.
those are specific trims made for offroading the cx-5 does not claim to be a offroad car just a suv with AWD. The offroad trims of these models have higher ground clearence etc for more useability offroading along with specific suspensions designed for it. The mazda doesnt have that nor does it claim to have it can you mildly off road with a mazda sure are you gonna take it to the canyon and carve up rocks hell no so when it comes to offroading those cars will be better but even those arent true off roading cars themselves just slightly raised imrpoved suspension cars the mazdas AWD system is all around the best its active sensing vs the others manually adjusted for mud snow etc it reacts faster than a human can to changes asap etc
If you need USB with 3 people in the rear seat for that long for that often, just use a splitter from the power outlet in back of the center console. Also, the rear seats have a 'recline' feature. It's only like 5 deg, but it's something. I don't believe the steering wheel is leather on the 2020 Sig. I have one and it does not feel like actual leather,
Very good demonstration of the AWD system improvement. Could you inquire of Mazda if the 2020 software changes be uploaded on older models? I would definitely pursue this should I be the owner a last generation CX-5.
I was thinking the same way. I'd love to add this software to the 2017 model that I will likely buy soon. I do not want to spend money on the new one but could really use the trail functionality for snowy conditions.
No need to update, they didn't actually change the AWD system. Mazda just added a new button to turn on off-road mode. Good news, you can turn on off-road mode in 2017-2019 CX-5 s by pressing the traction control button. It does the same thing (google WHAT’S THE DIFF? MAZDA CX-5 UNLOCKS ‘SECRET’ OFF-ROAD MODE and read Mazda's article about it for more info).
All it takes is one boulder punching a hole through the oil pan. I wouldn’t take any vehicle up this trail unless my vehicle has skid plates protecting all critical components of the drivetrain.
This will be my next ride. I have a 2015 M3 and I love it. But I want something bigger. I wish they would improve the MPGs on this one tho. I’m used to my M3’s awesome MPGs
Is turning the TCS off on a 2019 CX-5 turbo the same as Trail mode on the 2020 CX-5 turbo or are there additional improvements made in the newer models?
yes it does the same function turns of traction control they just changed the icon and name of it from TCS to trail mode. No difference in functionality and the active awd system is so good at calculating terrain height yaw etc you basicly never have to even use it. its used moreso to thrust your way out of a tricky spot that your stuck in and want to just torque yourself out of the jam.
Love all your videos and went with a Subaru. Getting my wife a new car and she loves the cx-5 would you think the turbo is the way to go for mostly around town driving or can we stick with the regular engine? Gas prices are high enough and I think the turbo requires premium fuel.
mazda touch screen speed sensitivity can be turned off just youtube it folks it takes maybe 2 mins of your time and 6 button presses and you can use the touchscreen moving 60mph or stopped. Oem only allows the screen to work up to 5mph. mazda seats are always super firm its the foam they use it takes like 3 months of daily use to get them to break in and feel great.
agree on the piano black - i scratches from looking at it. How to fix it? Either PPF it for eternal piece of mind or get AlliExpress replacements. Rest of the vehicle is 🔥
Based on how this system works. What would enabling it higher speeds do? I’ll say this. After ~ 90 mph. Lots of features get turned off. So maybe go to your local race track and find out.
Based on this review, I would get a subaru Forester sport. Cheaper, bigger, best AWD, lane centering, and better visibility. Yes the engine is weaker but it is more than enough for highway.

How does the ground clearance comparing the cx 30 and cx5. I find conflicting information online the cx5 is 7.5 in as stated in the video. Is the cx 30 is 6.9 in? Also it was mentioned the Rav 4 is better off road, does the engine in the Toyota feel underpowered off road?
"6.86 seconds to 60"? I counted at least 8.5 seconds after watching the acceleration run three times, from the time the pedal went down (from "Go!"). 'Something to do with that "big pause" at the start?
The Mazda CX-5 suspension is not tunned for offroad, it's quite delicate and stiff. If you want to drive it on a dirt road, you have to drive it nice and easy, or you will break the suspension.
Yeah, totally dismissive in the 2019 review because he didn't realize that car also had the off-road mode, he just didn't know how to activate it. Does he even do research on the cars he tests before he makes the videos?
I feel doubtful that mazda is reading here, but the NEED to to push the "trail mode" button in order for the ABS system to apply the brakes to the spinning wheels seems incredibly unnecessary. This is far more mild than the 7 different drive modes most off road vehicles have these day but the button pushing shouldn't be one-bit necessary.
The Subaru has a lot more space for the money. The Outback is a slightly larger vehicle. I also prefer the dual X-mode for off-road use. The Mazda is better... but still not as good as the Subaru.
Makes me a bit more confident in my 2021 going up in the mountains to where I want to go camping. My 06 Ranger has no problems with it but it's hard to pack all of us, our gear and the dog in that little truck.
Test driving this auto....found it very tight for me. My knees hit the steering column... Wish it was bigger. And I am not a large or tall guy. Will be happy with they come out with the inline 6 motor.
@drivingsportstv would the 2021 Mazda CX-5 Turbo with its shorter ground clearance or proper tires make it up in that coastal California dirt road trip with the Subaru Outback handle the trip with ease?
Hey!! It's "Ryan Tuesday!!!!" Great video/review. Have always loved the looks on the CX5 but the pricing(Although, yes this is the Signature edition), and awd systems leave a bit to be desired. Either way, thank you Ryan, for yet another great video. 👍
trying to decide between a 2018 CX-5 Grand Touring or a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek. I like the crosstrek more but wifey is boujie and prefers the Mazda. I want to use the SUV for car camping and going up north to the cabin and whatnot. What do you think?
The Mazda CX-5 is larger, making it better for car camping just due to having more space. Both are great cars with the Mazda being more street-oriented, of course. Make sure you keep your wife happy.
I own a cx5 and my fiance has a crosstrek and I can tell you now how uncomfortable it is to be in his crosstrek on long drives. The cx5 has you sitting up higher to where your legs actually bend at the knee like sitting in a regular chair. With the crosstrek I feel like I'm sitting on the floor with my legs straight out. There is also the giant transmission that takes up a lot of leg room in the interior making it hard to move your legs around.
I can agree with the preexisting snow challenge. I drive my CX-5 from ‘15 on dirt roads plenty. Getting new ‘21 Grand Touring Reserve 2.5t. Rubicon handles my heavy duty driving. Life is good. So is the car. Out.
I wonder how this new xmode on the cx5 compares to the 2021 Kia Sorento AWD. Hopefully you get a chance to test the Kia would love to know how the AWD system stacks up against the Acura RDX and the Outback XT
The dual-clutch-equipped Sorento would be a poor choice for any off-road conditions. Almost all the dual-clutch systems we tested overhead at some point. The standard clutch with a smaller engine might be a better choice, but we haven't tested either yet. So, YMMV.
The RAV4 is just a smaller, weaker and less capable version of the 4runner, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It caters to small families that want something with a more aggressive look and feel than the boring CRV. But at the end of the day, it's numb steering and suspension will leave you glad that you have a prettier infotainment system because that's all about all the excitement you'll get from it. The CX-5 clearly isn't as practical as the competition as it's strong points are driving dynamics and style. It falls short on cargo space and smooth cruising as it's designed to give the real auto enthusiasts a step up in the driving experience. In order to do that, sacrifices have to be made. You can't glide over every bump in the road then zip through the corners without body roll, at least not at this price point. There's no winners or losers here, just different strokes for different folks.
The trail mode is a nice addition. However, you could get pretty stuck if you don't press that button, which is undesirable. Wish the "automatic" mode of the AWD system would be more capable.
Yeah, honestly I am not going to get my new car into the condition I need a good AWD system, but driving CX-5 on paths is definitely an enjoyable experience.
Great video. No hill decent deal breaker. If you drive on snowy hills you can't live without this...as it will save your life on snowy and icey hills...
I am utterly SHOCKED at how well this handled this terrain. All with the push of a button. Why in hell couldn't Honda incorporate the same technology into the CRV. It's a far roomier and more SUV looking vehicle than the CX-5 which is basically a crossover.
Can you test the RAV4 LE/XLE AWD with the bog-standard AWD? Everyone just tests the Adventure model. I want to know how the standard AWD with the new algorithms does.

True.
Interesting
The 2020 maxx sport def doesn’t have that
i just installed falken AT 245/55/19 on my 2023 carbon edition. They look awesome and performs extremely well on light offloading. this car definitely can haldle rougher trails
The wood applique is actually real wood.
All Mazdas do have hill descent mode so I think having the trail mode enabled would disable hill descent
But if you are into driving experience, fun, design, and the quality you perceive, Mazda it's brand you should check.
@@subazealand9158 diesel and conventional automatic transmission is what brings me to Mazda.
Sat Nav can be upgraded so no problem.
Will see though as I like Forester as well and it fits my needs well. I could use a square trunk right now
Always fun to see you drive our local roads. I’m surprised I haven’t seen you out & about yet - those interior mounted cameras would definitely catch my eye.
you guys do realise that the trail mode is on all Awd Cx_5's ??? even the older ones, just turn off traction control and it turns into trail mode. they just added the button in the 2020 models because people where too stupid to realise that pff
Lol traction control for old model is u cant transfer the force from the wheel spinning to the wheel who has traction..
Just purchased a 2021 CX 5 GT with turbo, the vehicle will arrive in two weeks. I am so exciting!!
After 8 months of your comment, what is your feedback about the car? How is its performance off-road?
@@sm3ool9383
Overall very satisfied. I haven't do any off roads yet, but it handles heavy snow and ice very well. (with nice winter tires)
Informative review as always, a friend just traded in his Impreza for one and it looks like he got a nice vehicle!
Glad to see they improved 4WD system. If you engage Trail Mode on street will it keep more power going to the rear?
Short answer: NO. Long answer: Trail mode uses the fact that it has open differentials, you may know that in an open differential power goes to whichever wheel offers the least resistance to spinning, so having for example a wheel in the air will cause it to spin and spin, this system basically uses the ABS to brake individual wheels which then transfers the motion to the opposite wheel (the one with traction).
ideal suv! well done mazda!
Have to admit that was impressive. Go Mazda!
Gorgeous, sporty, fast and capable... what more can you ask for?
More interior room, smoother suspension over potholes and rough roads, comfier seats, better fuel economy, less feminine exterior, bigger infotainment with touch screen.
James I think you need a less feminine exterior 🤕
@@MrMoose-mf1oy 😅😅😂 This comment made my morning! Lol love my 19 cx5 signature 😎
An inch more of ground clearance might be nice, without too much of a sacrifice in on-road behavior.
How would you rank the AWD systems in Forrester, RAV4 Adventure/TRD offroad and the CX5?
Subaru does the best job of using wheel brakes to re-direct power, but Mazda isn't too bad!
@@JamesRussoMillas Mazda does it better. Look at the roller tests. Mazda currently has the best AWD system on the market
those are specific trims made for offroading the cx-5 does not claim to be a offroad car just a suv with AWD. The offroad trims of these models have higher ground clearence etc for more useability offroading along with specific suspensions designed for it. The mazda doesnt have that nor does it claim to have it can you mildly off road with a mazda sure are you gonna take it to the canyon and carve up rocks hell no
so when it comes to offroading those cars will be better but even those arent true off roading cars themselves just slightly raised imrpoved suspension cars
the mazdas AWD system is all around the best its active sensing vs the others manually adjusted for mud snow etc it reacts faster than a human can to changes asap etc
The engine alone in this car is a work of art, I hope people appreciate what Mazda did with this turbo.
Got a cx5 18 and honestly love it 👍
If you need USB with 3 people in the rear seat for that long for that often, just use a splitter from the power outlet in back of the center console. Also, the rear seats have a 'recline' feature. It's only like 5 deg, but it's something. I don't believe the steering wheel is leather on the 2020 Sig. I have one and it does not feel like actual leather,
Woah a trail mode that actually does something, very cool
Very good demonstration of the AWD system improvement. Could you inquire of Mazda if the 2020 software changes be uploaded on older models? I would definitely pursue this should I be the owner a last generation CX-5.
I was thinking the same way. I'd love to add this software to the 2017 model that I will likely buy soon.
I do not want to spend money on the new one but could really use the trail functionality for snowy conditions.
Someone above commented that "Trail Mode" is not new tech: it simply turns traction control off.
@@kenhoward3512 hahaha. This person should have watched more videos where this system was tested.
Watched a video with a Mazda tech saying they literally replaced the TSC off button with an off road mode looking button.
Front and Rear Torsen differential along with skid plates would go long way in making it better AWD SUV
All it takes is one boulder punching a hole through the oil pan.
I wouldn’t take any vehicle up this trail unless my vehicle has skid plates protecting all critical components of the drivetrain.
Especially with 7.5" ground clearance. Best to stay on road and gravel roads on occasion. Should be good for winter though.
Well said. Fantastic vehicle but no chance I’ll ever be off-roading in mine.
Thanks for the video. When this 0-60 test was made, what kind of fuel was used in the car? 87-91-93?
This will be my next ride. I have a 2015 M3 and I love it. But I want something bigger. I wish they would improve the MPGs on this one tho. I’m used to my M3’s awesome MPGs
I WAS looking at Subaru but i know what i want now. Capable and good looks!!
Is turning the TCS off on a 2019 CX-5 turbo the same as Trail mode on the 2020 CX-5 turbo or are there additional improvements made in the newer models?
Ive been told it is.
yes it does the same function turns of traction control they just changed the icon and name of it from TCS to trail mode. No difference in functionality and the active awd system is so good at calculating terrain height yaw etc you basicly never have to even use it.
its used moreso to thrust your way out of a tricky spot that your stuck in and want to just torque yourself out of the jam.
Thanks. I actually ended up getting a new 21 cx-5 awd gt turbo. Great vehicle!
Love all your videos and went with a Subaru. Getting my wife a new car and she loves the cx-5 would you think the turbo is the way to go for mostly around town driving or can we stick with the regular engine? Gas prices are high enough and I think the turbo requires premium fuel.
I have the GT and it drives amazing even without the turbo. You can always put it in sport mode if need be to speed up.
The premium gas just gives more torque but it does great on reg gas as well. If you want more than you can put in premium
mazda touch screen speed sensitivity can be turned off just youtube it folks it takes maybe 2 mins of your time and 6 button presses and you can use the touchscreen moving 60mph or stopped.
Rest of the vehicle is 🔥
I really admire the car,I love it wish I had the money to buy it 😌
The CX-5 suspension is not tuned for off road.
We have a 2019 and I wish it had paddles, but it needs another trans gear or 2 for the highway MPG. Glad they added a bigger screen on the newer ones.
My 2020 Signature seats were really firm at first and it bugged me but they definitely soften over time and I really like them now.
That's good to know. Thanks.
Do all 2020 and newer cx 5 and 9s have that trail button?
I have a cx-5 and I'm an outdoor enthusiast I love my car but I use my Tacoma for outdoors. I want to see a more rugged cx-5 in the future
Does the trail mode have a speed limit? Will it disengage in certain speed? I love your channel👍🏻👍🏻
great review!
Perfect, been waiting for this one.
Great review
Question: can you enable trail mode in high speed? Like 20 MPH in snow or 60 MPH on highway? If so that will be awesome
Subaru CVTs are garbage for soft-roading.
SUBARU CVT BLOWS UP. HEAD GASKET PROBLEMS. OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEMS AND DRIVES LIKE A BOAT. HOWEVER, WE HAVE A RIGHT TO CHOOSE
Subaru's CVT's over heat all the time they are Crap!
If Subaru's are so bad, then why are they the highest rated by Consumer Reports for the past 2 years?
@@norme1850 Consumers reports is the WORST place to look at reviews. Paid service by auto manufacturers and if you watch their reviewers are total flakes without a clue. YT reviewers like Alex on Autos and Redline give much better review and it's impartial 😊
Could you use the paddle shifters on the descent to lower the gear? Isn't it your "hill descent control" kind of?
Never heard of paddle shifters on these, is this new...?
One question is how much stress this TC system can bear before overheating causes it too disengage.
The awd is pretty good. Most people don't take their crossover off rode. If need real off road buy Toyota 4 runner. People buy Mazda for the driving experience. No other SUV can match the Mazda on driving dynamics. The 2020 ford escape is also good
I found that Ford Escape to be a huge let down. It felt cheap and was very noisy. CX-5 and RAV4 were much nicer imo.
Great review, but I don't see the CX-5 as an off road car. I do see it as a ski car, and that trail mode should do wonders in snow and ice. Also gravel roads.
That's actually really impressive
Outback vs Cx5 as a daily driver and some weekend light to moderate off-roading? Which one would you get?
Both can do it. Mazda is firmer, and will be more fun on pavement. Subaru better on the trails. Consider which aspect is more compelling for you.
@@drivingsports which is more robust and solid and reliable for many miles ? Which have stringer suspension?
@@amrashraf9559 Mazda is by far the most reliable of the two brands. One of my family members works for a Mazda Subaru dealership. They have tons of quality issues with Subarus, not so with Mazdas. I’m just now trading in my 2012 Mazda 3 with the first year of the skyactiv engine. 227,000 miles and it has never broken down on me.
Which one better compare to subaru forester for offroad?
You really review cars very well, best channel ever.
Please can you review the Toyota rush 2020 model.
On the 2019 test did you turn off TCS too and got poorer results?
We need the 2024 mazda cx-5 offroad test!🤩🤩🤩
You should do the Volkswagen Touareg. I have the TDI and it surprises me with its off-roading ability.
I would clear cover the black area if you got to scratch it. Ive never ruined any of mine. I always use only a damp microfiber colth to clean it.
Didn't even give it a chance last time.
Mazda placed a new button,
This time: wow it did it.
Yeah, totally dismissive in the 2019 review because he didn't realize that car also had the off-road mode, he just didn't know how to activate it. Does he even do research on the cars he tests before he makes the videos?
Ryan, For a driver focused smallish SUV that won't see offroad here in RI... CX5 Turbo? or Alfa Stelvio?
Could the hold button work as a hill descent?
I feel doubtful that mazda is reading here, but the NEED to to push the "trail mode" button in order for the ABS system to apply the brakes to the spinning wheels seems incredibly unnecessary. This is far more mild than the 7 different drive modes most off road vehicles have these day but the button pushing shouldn't be one-bit necessary.
One of the best experiences I have seen is your follower from Saudi Arabia😍
How does it compare to your Onyx XT? It is similar in cost and power to the Subaru.
Hey!! It's "Ryan Tuesday!!!!"
Great video/review. Have always loved the looks on the CX5 but the pricing(Although, yes this is the Signature edition), and awd systems leave a bit to be desired.
Either way, thank you Ryan, for yet another great video. 👍
this is a really good review, it is tested in a truly reasonable environment and all the concerns were being raised. COOL~!
trying to decide between a 2018 CX-5 Grand Touring or a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek.
Nice reveiw how are the kidneys ?
Please more forester sport videos
CanTRAIL MODE be added to a 2019 GT Reserve AWD, 2.5 L. Turbo? i.e. is it merely the addition of programming and an "on" button?
I can agree with the preexisting snow challenge. I drive my CX-5 from ‘15 on dirt roads plenty. Getting new ‘21 Grand Touring Reserve 2.5t. Rubicon handles my heavy duty driving. Life is good. So is the car. Out.
How is the suspension on it? Looking to buy in the UK
Hi Sir! could you dona comparison between cx5 and crosstrek in snow?
I wonder how this new xmode on the cx5 compares to the 2021 Kia Sorento AWD. Hopefully you get a chance to test the Kia would love to know how the AWD system stacks up against the Acura RDX and the Outback XT
The dual-clutch-equipped Sorento would be a poor choice for any off-road conditions. Almost all the dual-clutch systems we tested overhead at some point. The standard clutch with a smaller engine might be a better choice, but we haven't tested either yet. So, YMMV.
Belleza la Mazda cx5
I want to know how the standard AWD with the new algorithms does.
don't reverse relying on the reverse camera alone. always look, use your mirrors and be aware of the surroundings.
this advice is mostly for americans.
So Mazda uses Toyo as OEM tires?
