  • Join Rotterdam-based producer and DJ, Beyun, in her studio as she dives deep into the details of her hybrid hardware + Reason setup outlined previously in her ADE Masterclass. This talk explored using Reason and hardware in a live set-taking the tangibility and immediacy of hardware sequencing workflows, coupled with the accessibility and flexibility of software as a source of sound. Additionally, Beyun shares a few creative workflow ideas for the studio, outlining setups for quickly sketching ideas as well as a mobile setup powered by Reason players.

    Great video and explanation. You have a broadcaster’s voice! Beautifully done. I have to say it is also the single most complex process I’ve seen other than Beardyman (whose rig is a whole other level of complexity). I learned a lot from this and I’ve been a Reason user since v1 and I’ve also used Elektron gear for a few years now.

    Thanks Beyun and Reason! I really love seeing other artists explain their modes and methods.
    My very first live rig was run off Reason 2.5 (back in 2004!), so well before any external VST support etc. But it was just so stable, particularly for the time. These days I chop and change between Ableton, Mainstage, iPad (Drambo/AuM), and pure DAWless, all sequenced from a Squarp Hapax, but this has me tempted to fire up Reason again and see how I like it.

    That's an impressive setup! I'm trying to do something similar, but I think the missing piece for me is the Multiclock. I use an RK008 as a MIDI hub with clock, but adjusting the sync on each individual port is a bit tedious. I want to be able to jam DAWless as well as recording into Reason which makes the setup a bit more complex.

    love the setup as i saw the Rotterdam-Session! I run a similar Combination of external Hardware and we´re doing also synched live Sessions with it with other Musicians. But i using it a little different, because i have an selfmade Hardware-Midiclock (which i assign in the Settings > Sync > Clock-Sync IN") and use the Koshdukai-Maps & -Lua-Codecs, so that i can record every Note and Automation on every Channel at once in Reason. This works without Advanced Midi, because i register just new Midi-Controllers (Koshdukai) in the Settings which have a fixed Midi-Channel - when i assign this "Midi-Controller" to a Track in the Timeline it makes it possible to record ALL Tracks at once. I also assigned my Akai-Midimix fix to the SSL-Mixer, so that i can Dubmix 8 Channels with 3 Send-FX each live.
    So Reason is great to use it as an Live-Instrument on one Hand, and at the same time it´s my Recorder for all live Jams which gives me the opportunity to fix Automations (or whatever) for every Instrument in retrospect. 👍

But def feels like a geek solution that works. I was more heading towards using Reason for sound scaping and dropping loops into something else (Logic Pro Loop Grid) but maybe this gives a few more safe options when live.

    Excellent work! Especially the scripting! Curious though why a Beatstep Pro would not work in a slightly less elaborate way with Reason and do everything you use the Electron for?

    • @beyun303
      @beyun303 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You can certainly use the Beatstep Pro. 😊 I had my Elektron gear, which I've used for many years, and I'm super used to the Elektron sequencer (pages with multiple lengths, conditional trigs), which is far more advanced than the Beatstep Pro (which I've used, but don't own). Additionally, the Octatrack can send program change MIDI, set up scenes, complex chains of patterns, etc-such a POWERFUL device. I use these more advanced features later, but didn't cover them here.
      I originally started my live set journey going DAWless, but I ran into a few things: 1) my "sound" requires a lot of lush effects, which I didn't want to buy a bunch of expensive pedals for. 2) I was disappointed with the Octatrack's sound, which completely ruins certain samples. 3) I missed having Analog Lab with me and didn't want to buy (and maintain!) a bunch of vintage synths and somehow store them in my tiny studio. By that point I already had the studio workflow setup done between my hardware and Reason, so moving to using it for a live set made sense.

      @@beyun303 Thanks, yes that makes perfect sense :) I’m old (skool lol) I had the Elecktron Sidstation when it was released, but the output was so noisy you had to have a gate on it so it would cut the output when it wasn’t actually playing! I should try some of their other instruments sometime. Thanks again :)

    I def need to spend some time on better understanding all the MIDI routing functionality of Reason. My current ideas are more about external triggering rather than external sequencing, so I'll be leaving Reason as sync master, but I need to sort out how to have many different controllers sending midi notes and other data all at know and have them trigger different Reason devices, and making them switch control between Reason devices/combos on the fly.

When you assigned it in the Settings Midi-Section you can right-click on the Reason Mix-Console assign it to your Midi-Mixer. Then right-click each Knob/Fader/Poti you want to control. Don´t forget to save this to a new Default Template, so that you have always this functions, when you create a new Song

    After adding a virtual midi port it's not connected to anything. How do you map actual devices to the virtual ports?

    • @beyun303
      @beyun303 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The virtual MIDI devices are only used for locking the recording lanes, so you can simultaneously record multiple lanes of MIDI information. 22:07 explains it. Physical MIDI devices are added to Reason in the usual way in Preferences > MIDI > Auto-detect surfaces. MIDI devices are usually automatically recognized and appear in the Easy MIDI Inputs list below. To send MIDI _from_ Reason, you use the "MIDI Out Device" instrument in the Rack. To direct MIDI from an external device to a specific instrument in Reason (which has a locked recording lane and player with Direct Record enabled see 24:17), you use the Advanced MIDI Device in the Rack 02:30
