    Both are great engines. They just use different philosophies. I love the "do more with less cubes" from the ford. I also love how responsive the LS & LT engines are from very few mods. Whichever side your heart aligns with, you should be thankful for the competition always upping the ante. Because we ultimately benefit from that with a big grin every time you mash that go pedal.

      It’s sacrilegious to put a Chevy engine into a Pontiac. Why not a Pontiac 455 big block?

    • @rexmilanista
      @rexmilanista 3 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      @@travelinman482 because a modern LS/LT is smaller then a big block chev/Pontiac, more efficient, can make more power and has far greater transmission options to boot. You get the best of both worlds when doing a swap like that in a hot rod.
      This all coming from a die hard Ford Guy. I'm toying with the idea of actually doing a 7.3 swap in my Fairlane as the aftermarket grows for that engine.

      Liked your comments. Now, are you talking about more [stock] transmission options? Cause there’s several companies that make aftermarket transmissions for engine swaps, etc. Also, you can make any BB engine build some serious horsepower and most importantly, torque. Dr. Olds used to build some bad ass 455ci engines in his heyday! There’s already a 7.3L Godzilla engine on TH-cam that’s pushing over 1,000 hp.

    I've driven both.
    The 6.2 pushrod v8 Chevy makes is great for low rpm grunt work, endless torque on demand to where you'll find yourself doing hillclimbs without dropping a gear.
    The Ford 5.0L is great to play with at mid to high rpms and never feels short of breath.
    Both have positives and negatives. But at the end of the day, you won't be disappointed to own either of them

      It's the joy of getting to drive all maker's designs that makes it so much fun to switch manufacturers every few years when a new version comes out. Getting old ain't bad, since I can now afford a new car every few years. That house I bought in 1977 for $40K and sold for $625K turned out to be a good investment, when I moved to a retirement home that only cost us $50K.

      @D.E.B. B must've been nice buying houses in that kind of market. I bought my first place at $325k in 2017, bought a second in 2019 for $488k, and a third last year for $460k.
      If I were building my investment in your market, I would probably be over a dozen houses in the same length of time.
      But that was a different time, back before our government destroyed our way of life.

      Intake, exhaust and E85 on a Gen 3 coyote can get you in the 600hp range. That kinda settled it for me, especially combined with the 10 speed. Hell, you have 4.6L 2v's now that can get just under 500 N/A since people are making serious heads for them now (after 20 years, lol finally). Either way, I like the idea of making 5 to 600 ish hp N/A with a 5.0. The coyote simply has a more efficient cylinder and head design due to it's relatively small bore but proportionately large stroke (the ideal cylinder is actually 1/2L with the stroke being slightly larger than the bore). The coyote would be at its most efficient if it was 4 liters (like all the european v8s are). A bigger engine will obviously make more power but as he stated, the coyote is roughly 24 percent more efficient than the 6.2.

    Before (big block) gasoline engines go away, I wish Ford would make a 7 liter version of the Coyote engine. Use the same bore and stroke as the 427 FE. The LT1 was a manual with 455/455 in it and she would rip and loved to be "beat" on. LT4 is the same, but you have to be careful as the car is super expensive and the engine is ridiculously more powerful than anything I have ever had. Probably going to get another ZL1 or Z28 in 26 for the last year of the gen 6, Vette will be paid for by then and more of a "show" car. Keeping her stock. Completely different, but I prefer the coyote, and fyi if you want a really torquey coyote you can put a cam ground for torque in, like off the f150, and all of a sudden I can't tell much of a difference, but it's much easier to put aggressive cams stock in a DOHC motor so that's why the performance version get such aggressive cams from stock.

    When I drive the 'vette I really enjoy the low end torque and acceleration. The Mustang pulls well, but over a longer period and not as viscerally. Both engines are masterpieces of engineering...
    The Coyote gets about 24-25 mpg on the highway and the 'vette will do 30 mpg if I activate the AFM and keep my foot out of it... It's satisfying to get a 500 mile range on an 18 gallon tank :D
    On the occasional track day, the Mustang struggles as its suspension and brakes aren't really intended for the track, it has like a 60/40 weight distribution, making turns more challenging, while the 'vette was designed from the jump for handling with a 50/50 weight split. Both cars do really well on 11+ hour road trips as well.

Mod for mod the Ford actually beats the Chevy most of the time in power increase especially boost. I hate to disagree,but it’s not the Chevy guys propagating this story. Tell me how many Chevy guys are swapping in a Ford engine vs Ford guys swapping in a Chevy motor? Not too many is my guess.
      As to the “Chevy just copied Ford” camp…do you really not think if Ford engineers knew what they had designed would they would not have developed it? And if so,what does that say about their engineers?
      Simple fact is GM engineers unconstrained run circles around Ford engineers. BTW…the magnetorheological shocks that let your Mustangs halfway keep up with Camaro’s? Thank GM for those. Y’all whine incessantly about displacement…5.0 vs 5.3/6.0/6.2. Two different schools of thought…but when GM decides to go for the added complexity of DOHC they’ll wipe the floor with your vaunted “Cowdoodie”. BTW…what’s with Ford and these stupid nicknames? Juvenile. You should be happy GM has stayed with cam in block. Gives you at least SOME room to crow. Dollar for dollar your engine still doesn’t compete with an LS,much less an LT engine. When’s the last time ANY Ford won a racing championship? The sixties or seventies? NHRA…nope. Indy car…nope. Daytona…nope. NASCAR…maybe once in the last 20 years. Shows me what OHC is good for. But do tell me how superior Ford is. The only real claim Ford has is when a goofy Texan named Shelby hot rodded their pathetic product did they stood out. Other than that…nada. And had the powers that presided over GM at the time not reigned Zora Arkus Duntov in…you would not even have LeMans in your pocket.
      So please do tell me how Ford is God when it comes to engines.

    Went through the engine build experience for my ZR1. After assembly they weigh the engine, as they fill the oil by weight not by volume - 590 lbs for the LT5.
    Prior to owning the ZR1, I was driving the GT350 - and you right. The engine is absolutely amazing. I enjoyed driving it even after I picked up the ZR1. It is something completely different and great in it's own way.
    You really have to rev that engine out. It doesn't lack low end torque, but it is noticeably less then the LT5 even before it gets into boost, and honestly it makes it more fun to drive on the street in a lot of cases as you won't kick the back end out at lower rpms with more generous throttle input. It blows people away the first time in it when you just hold it in gear forever.
    The LT5 is just amazing torque and power everywhere. There is not wrong gear or too low of an RPM - if you floor it, it will send you back.

    One note about the voodoo that makes it even more special than you describe: In your picture the crank journals are Up, Down, Down, Up all 180 deg. from each other. This is what all flat plane crank V8s are designed as. However the voodoo is Up, Down, Up, Down. Google a picture of the voodoo crankshaft. This makes it a bespoke design that is sort of a mix between traditional flat-plane and cross-plane. It truly is a special engine and unique piece of engineering that we might never see again.

However GM and Chrysler wanted to keep giving the people what they want, the people still wanted ohv V8 engines but the epa wouldn't have it, so D.O.D later changed to AFM for gm and Chryslers MDS systems was designed to please epa standards, that's why gm and Chryslers included these systems in their cars and trucks. The Coyote being shorter front to back than many V8s actually suprised me. I'm in the process of replacing my Gen 1 Coyote short block with a Gen 3 short block. I was able to pull the engine out of my 2012 GT without removing the radiator or fan. I also had enough room at the firewall to get to the bell housing bolts very easily. The only hickup I had was having to detach the steering shaft so that I could pull the engine with the exhaust manifolds attached. The coyote is really not that complicated to work on either. I think the DOHC setup seems to make people think that it's just a huge ordeal to work on. It's not. The Timing chains and sprockets are marked, so you know exactly what goes where, it's pretty hard to mess up.

    High reviving crossplanes can be done quite easily, it’s just that the cam profiles and cylinder head design makes them very lazy down low. Project spinal tap is quite a neat take on that very subject with the LS platform. The argument that pushrods and cross planes don’t like to rev was proven untrue 30 years ago. Modern spintron testing and camshaft development has made RPM even easier to achieve with 8000+ rpm cam lobes that are requiring less than 100 lbs of seat pressure.

      @Dayandcounting 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It not done for the revs. It's done for the reduced rotating mass which allows the engine to change revs quicker and also the exhaust scavenging. A flat plane crank is typically much lighter often about half that of a cross plane. It's the same reason if you're a road racer you would choose a light weight flywheel, allow quick up and down shifts. It was a way bigger deal during the manual trans days but it's easier on DCT too.
      There are some test where a Coyote crank was put into Voodoo and they made about the same power and torque. I think cross plane made a bit more torque and slightly less power, very small though. In terms of red line it's soft red line based off where the engine rolls over. If it's not a limitation of the bottom or top end in either case.
      That's not true of the Voodoo crank and I suspect that it wont be true of the C8's new 5.5L. It's lighter but only by a few pounds because of the large displacements. Those engine are using flat planes mostly for marketing hype. The C8R engine is heavily restricted by rules so the production engine will make considerably more power.

    Great comparison between the engine builds. There was one GM engine that you missed on the GM side and should have been put in the specialty engine competition. The new "Blackwing" from Cadillac. It makes 550hp with 640lb-tq out of an incredibly small 4.2L V8 and can only be found in the 2020+ CT5-V (for now).

    31 year Ford mechanic told me an LS 6.0 5.3 6.2 or any LT engine same liter sizes would put double if not triple the miles on a 5.0 could ever do. He said he loves 5.0s the said it’s a much larger Engine but won’t out last the LS/LT line up.

      Everybody has there options, had a 2018 Silverado with a 5.3 in it and it was a complete piece of garbage. No power at all, average about 2mpg less then advertised and overall just junk. Have a coyote in f150 and its night and day. As far as getting g miles out of motors it comes down to maintenance. Ls is a great motor and so is the lt but I own a f150 with a coyote and a boss 302 with the road runner version of the coyote and will put them up vs gm products anyday. Know plenty of mechanics that could give arguments for both brands

    Would like to see an overview of the 7.3 Godzilla, Ford block. Would be cool to see how it stacks up to Chevy and Dodge's large displacement engines. Its of similar design, not an overhead cam block like the Coyote. Its supposed to make crazy HP and torque with little modification.
