    I like the idea of giving hats to everyone. And, using a different pattern for each hat.
    I usually use one crochet pattern and do hat and scarf sets for the mailman, postman, and garbagemen. But I do make extra sets for the homeless and put them out at different locations for people to take them.
    I have decided that my New Year's resolution is to teach myself to knit. Hopefully I will be knitting items for next winter as well. ❤

    • @sweetteanoshade903
      @sweetteanoshade903  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Question: How do you give your gifts to the mailman, garbagemen, etc? Do you just leave them a package either on top of the garbage can or in the mailbox that says "For garbage men / mailman / etc.?"

    • @marianraecrochetknit1199
      @marianraecrochetknit1199 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sweetteanoshade903 Christmas is on a Friday this year. So when my garbage guys do the pick-up on Wednesday, I will run out and meet them and give them their gifts.
      Same with the mailman. He delivers around the same time each day. So I will have all week to "catch" him and give him his gift.
      Same goes for the couple that deliver my papers.
      I tried leaving all of them packages one year. They either left them because they weren't aware it was theirs or someone else blatantly took them. If I want to give them something, I have to "catch" them.
      It is a pain to do. But well worth it.

    Hey guys! Love your hat for neighbours idea. I usually knit my mail lady a new hat every year but you got me thinking now about gifting others some at random times too, lovely idea! Ok, you guys sold me on the October evening hat! It turned out gorgeous, looks beige on screen but pink would be nice too. Scott I could tell you were a wee bit off but not terribly honestly. I understood too that the hats all needed to be done by Christmas 😂. Good luck on kicking caffeine a bit out of your life, it is so many of our addictions. Can’t wait to see the other 13 hats on your upcoming podcasts. Happy thanksgiving to you both and all Americans. We had our’s in Canada early October and boy it was sure different this year just having our household only. Hope you find a way to make it special. P.s. Hi, Someone may have already mentioned this. The difference between woolen and worsted spun. In worsted spun the fibers are all laying flat one next to the other. It is a dense, heavier yarn. Woolen the fibers are all jumbled and when spun makes the yarn full of air and loft. The term worsted is also used as a yarn weight, which can confuse things. Always enjoy your podcasts!

    The knitting in the film is the way I was taught, ie English. It’s fast as you never take your fingers off the knitting. Left thumb pushes the stitches off left needle for the right needle, which is resting in between thumb and index finger of right hand, to catch one stitch at a time and a new stitch is made by simply pushing wool, which is resting on right index finger, over the right needle to be pulled through and make new stitch. Sounds complicated I know but isn’t really. Probably best on long needles though. A bit fiddly on circulars if too short. Thanks for the episode. Always enjoy even if don’t always comment 😁🌿

      I keep thinking I'm going to watch a tutorial and try this method out. It's tough to switch knitting styles, but it's worth a try!

    • @chrisb1682
      @chrisb1682 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sweetteanoshade903 Yes it’s hard switching. It’s worth just trying out of curiosity but not necessaryI!!! I could knit anything, quickly, without looking at my knitting. But couple years ago had to find a new way of knitting cos the bottom joints of my thumbs were getting painful. I now knit with cables or double pointed needles and use a sort of continental style, looking forward to when I can knit by touch again 😂

    I'm just catching up on episodes. For the odd ends of yarn (neverending 40g balls) you could do a blanket like the northeasterly. You knit long strips. That one you pick up the next strip on the edge of the previous one. But you could also knit a bunch of X length scarves and join them.

    At least one other person has chimed in about woolen vs worsted, but I couldn't help myself. I'm coming at this as a hand-spinner.
    To me, woolen spun means that it's made from carded fiber (roving or rolags, the fibers run in many different directions), and is spun long-draw (pulling the fiber away from the wheel, generally letting the twist into the fiber while you're still drafting it out, and you don't smoosh the fibers flat and smooth as you go). The result is an airy, lightweight, but fuzzy yarn.
    Worsted spun means that you used combed fiber (top, the fibers all run the same direction and the shortest fibers have fallen out during processing), and that it was spun with a short draw (fiber is drafted using both hands, the twist is only let into a little bit of the fiber at a time, and you smooth the singles down as you go). Result is a denser, smooth yarn.
    ETA: Columbia and Targhee are both breed of sheep.

    First of all, I really enjoy your podcast... Question for boys... How long do you knit the foot of the sock before you start the heel? I knit some socks for my boyfriend... I make them toe-up with a fleegle heel (which gives a similar look as to heel flap and gusset heel) and I have no idea how long should I knit the leg before the ribbing... Thank you in advance... When John was discussing the "stash", I noticed that his voice dropped about half an octave when he said acrylic. Please don't tell me that you guys are yarn snobs😒. While I admit that natural fibers are superior for most major garments, acrylic has a place in the world of knitting. It seems that while crocheters use acrylic almost exclusively, knitters (my personal observation) tend not use it at all, or hide it away like a dirty secret. The only major exception I have seen is Ross (smellslikeyarn) who uses it a lot and talks about the latest yarn hauls from Herrschner's and Premier. I tend to be a process knitter. I do finish projects (mostly cowls, shawls and hats) I prefer to knit just to make stitches and watch the fabric appear as if by magic. If I bought $25-$30 for all the swatches I make, I would go broke. I do have a wide variety of natural fibers (wool, alpaca, cashmere, etc.) in my stash, I use them only when I am going to complete a project that I am going to wear.
    Please don't take this comment as a criticism. I love watching you guys talk about your knitting, your lives, and even Angela Lansbury (I bought the complete DVD set of Murder, she wrote) after hearing you guys talk about her movies (I'm 70 and remember the series fondly). As a final touch, I wish Scott all the best in his potential promotion, and I wish both of you a Happy Thanksgiving, good health, and even a grudging admiration of acrylic 😉.
