    57s for OH? Never thought of that, I'll have to try it! I always go condensers but yeah I can see a more natural kit sound.
    BTW ages ago I knew an old school engineer (grammy nominated) that told me about a band he recorded in early 80s. Drummer had an elaborate kit and a long list of mics he wanted. Carson set up 5 mics, the drummer said "WTF are you kidding?" He said "Let's run down a level check with my setup & tell me what you think." After playback the drummer said "Man! That's the best my kit ever sounded! We'll go with your setup!"

      For sure 57's by themselves can give you a more midrange heavy sound. I have the pair running through a modeling software to add some more fullness to them. And to your story point, less mics can absolutely give you a more full and clear sound. If you aren't careful more mics will lead to more phase issues and a smaller kit sound. Thanks for watching!
