    I just love the thrill of the hunt. I love to say, “I found X for $5!” My wife is always like so if your not gonna sale it who cares 😂. Reselling has literally made me loose interest in some of my most favorite channels on TH-cam. Once I realized they value the $ over the nostalgia, I lost my connection with some of these channels. Also let me say I don’t mind watching channels get things for good deals, but when it’s only to flip for profit only and not to build your collection for free I just loose interest. I don’t care if your going for a complete gamecube collection if your just gonna turn around and sale it all. Plus gamecube sucks 😉.

    Well said and I think it’s mostly about the money now. I personally don’t care or know what my collection is worth on any given day. I still love playing my games and hunting for more games I want to play. Now saying that I know I have more games than I could ever possibly finish but we are always pairing down the collection to add games I’m going to play. I am not into collecting for bragging rights & ego from social media groups I'm not a part of. Not about the money here. I would say my desire for retro gaming falls into why Tyler from My Retro Life is into it. My late Uncle got me into video games at an early age... I was probably about 6 or 7 when I remember playing games on his Commodore 64. I loved it so much that a Commodore 64 was on the top of my Christmas wish list. Santa got me the next best thing at the time - a Texas Instruments home computer. My Uncle got me into Nintendo when it came out, then Sega. Gaming is one of the fondest memories I have of him. It's also one of the few things I can share from childhood with my son, who has very limited interests because of his Autism. We both love Mario, Sonic, and Yoshi. We even use gaming as therapy for him because it makes him use both hands at the same time and it's something he has to focus on and not stim (arm flapping because he's excited).
    With all that said, I don't flip games and we only collect what we want to play. I think the highest valued game I own is Ocarina of Time ($100 cart only)and most valuable consoles are an N64 Pikachu edition (for my son) and an xbox 360 R2 edition (because I'm a star wars nut)I have zero intentions of selling any of them...I don’t care how valuable they become later on.

  • @dont_get_jealous
    @dont_get_jealous ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The real question is how fast the hobby will begin to dissipate over time. PS5 is slowly rolling out digital only consoles we hear. It’s not a leap to suggest PS6 won’t have physical games at all. Once that era happens and no new gamers (aka children) are attached to physical media going forward, the hobby will begin to die off. Gen Y and Z are often broke and may choose between now and the next gen era to massively dump their collections bringing prices down and officially ending the collectors era. I give this hobby 10 years max before sales plummet and consoles begin dying off and modern gamers invest in stocks and necessities instead of nostalgia. Without younger ppl to buy into the hobby it simply goes away.
    I’m not happy about any of this, but it feels inevitable.

    Dude nailed it!! I quit selling last summer , and in turn haven't been collecting as much, but when I do get stuff I'm stoked! But there is alot of big youtubers that show how much they make by finding these items and then sell them on what not for over market value.. bs imo

    • @Pacmancase
      @Pacmancase  ปีที่แล้ว

      That is the real issue here. The viewer that stumbles across a video that shows people hunting, flipping and making a profit but "they are gamers" is part of the identity, is pretty misleading and can influence some people that the hobby is cool because you can make money but in fact, I should see way more video's like "my retro life" talking about the memories and fun that games brought to them. It is a weird landscape right now in the retro community.

  • @ezrider1968

    I find it really annoying when the videos I watch just talk about games in terms of how expensive they are and never actually talk about the game as something to play or something that’s cool to have. Even the channels I like a lot. I just don’t find it interesting. If you showed me a video of a stack of cash sitting on a table, I probably wouldn’t think that’s very interesting either. Personally, I’ve started collecting original Xbox games. There are only a handful of them that are worth any real money, and only a few of those are interesting to me. The vast majority of the Xbox games I’m interested in are dirt cheap, but they’re the ones I remember fondly, always wanted to play but never did, or have some interesting aspect to them that makes me want it in my collection. I also collect records and books, and it’s almost never the expensive ones that I still really care about after I’ve owned them for a few days.

    Here's the thing. Even if someone is a purist that wants to play the games on real hardware, every single cartridge based retro system now has an everdrive, and all the disc based systems now have either ODEs available (PS1, Saturn, Dreamcast, Gamecube), or they are hackable, both of which allow you to run games off of ISOs on a thumbdrive, SD card, or hard drive.
    Point being, we live a world where we don't actually need to build these collections of physical media to play these games. This wasn't possible when we were kids, obviously, but it is now, so why do we insist on getting the physical copies? That's a valid question that's worth asking, and there are a few different potential reasons:
    1) We have the collector psychology (ie: we just like having collections of stuff sitting on shelves)
    2) We like the idea of having things that are rare and valuable that most people don't have (when you go in a retro game store to shop do you make a beeline for the expensive games in the glass case, or do you go for the cheap games? This probably says a lot about what kind of collector you are.)
    3) Ego. We want to impress our friends (or we are youtubers that want to impress our subscribers with our mindblowing collection)
    4) We enjoy the hunt
    5) We enjoy the tactile ritual of pulling a game off the shelf, plugging it in, and hitting the power button
    Are those 5 things actually worth all the time we spent acquiring the collection, the money we spent on the collection, and the space the collection takes up? If we were really honest with ourselves the answer for many of us might actually be "no". We would actually be just fine with a Mister FPGA, or with real consoles and everdrives.

    I feel like it’s more about the hunt these days when it should be about playing games that we used to play and have nostalgia for or new games that seem interesting.

    What an insanely interesting video!
    The way I see it, I think we (as a whole) have a bit of an issue. Most of us when we were young had limited means to access the games unless we were born into a well off family or had parents who were already hardcore gamers. Now that we are in our 20s - 50s we have this disposable, extra income that we can use to pour into the hobby -- only problem is that we have NO LIMIT. We don't know when enough is enough. We build up the collections like crazy, then have a huge moment of "Why did I do this?" "Do I really need all of this stuff?" "Do I need this to make me happy?" We then downsize in an extreme way, moving as much as we can. Many get bit by the bug and regretfully start up collecting again from zero. There's no balance in this at all.
    And the hunt itself is fun. It is VERY fun to go out into the wild with a wad of cash and find gems out in the wild. Even more so if you're out there trying to hustle to make money. For me, it was very easy to halt collecting and become a reseller because the incentive became making some real money from doing what I love. I made sure I picked up everything I wanted for my collection, and now I'll default to some form of emulation unless it's something that's REALLY amazing to keep for me.
    People hate to see that there are others out there making money on their hobby, but the reality is that the same people won't go out of their own way to hunt for games themselves. The hobby is definitely about the money now and there is no changing this. So instead, people's mindset needs to change about HOW they collect. They will need to come to terms with the reality that there will be many many people (in every city) buying up games to resell at a profit OR to fund their own collection. And take part. It's stupidly easy to do the same with some leg work.
    Great video as usual my man! That editing game is 🔥!

    I've even fallen into the resell mindset a few years back and it made thrifting unenjoyable for me and made me stop going for a while which really reset my mindset and now I'm just back into collecting stuff I think is cool. Sure it's nice to get sometime expensive for cheap, but I'll leave it if I have no use for it. It's also annoying that resellers will buy 3 or 4 copies of a certain special edition *cough Zelda cough* just to flip leaving people who actual want it, shit out of luck. Super annoying lol but great video as always

    It's kinda both for me i think..
    Because at first and how it's always been was about the games and for specific consoles i have or had.. But with what's been happening for the past years and how some games got to be so high in value and prices going up i started hunting those games and even picking up more than one copy of those rare expensive games.. And then i sell those or trade some for what i couldn't catch..
    But im not really sure what the future holds for these games and in my opinion i don't think they will be that valuable with that kinda hype happening

    So I do flip games a little, but only to afford the games I want. My collection is 100% things I want to play and nostalgia. I have been collecting since 1996. That was the year when I fell in love with Working Designs and said that I wanted every game in their catalogue. I have a lot of systems that I am done collecting for (nes, SNES, Genesis, N64, Atari 5200, etc.) Because I have all the games that I want to play on them. The last 10 games I purchased were all PS4 titles. The last retro games that I purchased were Games from a good friend that is leaving the hobby and he needed money for his family. Yea I watch the flip and sale videos, but mainly to see what other people are keeping in their collection, not what they are selling.

    • @Pacmancase
      @Pacmancase  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think we have all traded and flipped to get the games we want. The problem is purpose. If you flip a game to buy a more expensive game just because it's expensive, That seems silly to me. If you flip because you really love a game that so happens to be expensive, this I understand, we aren't made of money and the hobby can get pricey.

  • @stevenyarnell9317

    I've never flipped or resold games. I scarcely trade and opt to give away duplicates I come across.
    But flippers and resellers HAVE ruined the hobby of collecting for those of us not in it for money. All excuses aside that people make, it's greed plain and simple. It's bad enough they've ruined the hobby for themselves, but now they've screwed over the rest of us.
    But, love and passion means nothing to the greedy so, it's unlikely to change.

    Although I noticed a change around 2016 or 2017 the big increase of flippers, the 2020 COVID collectors were the ones that inflated the prices and the market because suddenly now these people were home from work and bored and wanting to collect things. I only buy games that I want because I want to play them, and because I love them from either my childhood or time of my life that I enjoyed it. Sometimes I'll pick up some games I've never played that look cool ,but never with the intense to sell. There was a special type of jerk that realized money could be made in this community and they've really tainted the pool of collectors turning everyone into resellers. I wish they didn't drive all the prices up but I guess it is what it is, I'll keep collecting old sports games and stuff for the PlayStation 1 that nobody else wants lol. The people that don't have the passion are the ones that want to fold now that they didn't see the gold mine they thought they would have by reselling video games.

All the new games just don't feel the same anymore they've got one objective and that's to take as much of your money as they possibly can. Stupid loot boxes and overly complicated story modes made solely to frustrat you into spending money. I've only actually enjoyed a handful of new games and they have all been vr games Robinson the journey was an amazing game I loved it.

If development teams back then couldn't get everything they wanted in one disc the game would have extra discs or for cartridge games you'd have a Sequel to look forward to the game would finish and leave you wanting to purchase the next game. Not like now it's dragged out so long the hype is none existing anymore.

    I like to play games and have since I was a child and enjoy making money from games too.
    Example. I bought a bundle of 13 games yesterday for $500 to keep 3 of the games and am excited to keep those to play again. I am also super excited I get to add them to my collection for free and will be making a profit on the bundle after I sell the rest. At the same time though the person is holding onto 4 cib consoles which include a sealed atari jaguar to buy off him for $1k. None of those will be sold and they are just being kept in the collection because I want them.
    I also buy blockbuster stuff too though from ebay, I doubt many people are spending $110 for a copy of Paper Mario on Gamecube with a blockbuster rental case.
    I will also say that I started collecting in March of 2021, so obviously I was sitting at home watching youtube of people like retrorick doing this. I had my childhood N64, Gamecube, gameboys, dreamcast, some games, manuals, and strategy guides. But now I have like 100+ blockbuster pieces and boxes for my consoles, this wouldn't be possible if I couldn't resell stuff to make profits.

    There are 2 retro gaming stores in my small town. One guy goes to flea markets buys up lots, refurbishes consolesband turns them around in his store for a reasonable price, he's not a fool and knows what things are worth, but he doesn't fill his shop with high-value rarities. He holds game nights and has 1up arcade machines in his shop so you can just hang out and chill around gaming culture... he seems to understand that a healthy local gaming community will mean success for him.
    The other shop is a collecter/flipper guy who sellsbfrom his collection. Most of his shop is high-end Nintendo collecter stuff, pokemon cards and Funko pops... his prices are exhorbitant, and he never has time for a customer outside of making the transaction... in fact, he's generally not personable.
    I don't know if I have made it clear which retro shop I prefer but there are people out there to exploit trends they see the items for their profit... and then there are the people out there that invest-in and cultivate the community and I really wish them all of the success.

    At least retro gaming is growing but I agree, if your collecting to make money, its a completely different hobby than a traditional game collector. Looking for something that is priced low that the current market values high, and is not interested in discussion of low value games or even buying games at their market price, just because its a game your interested in having.
    I consider myself more of a toy collector first, and then I collect video games along with that for nostalgia. But also playing retro Tournaments at Conventions I find reinvigorating for the hobby, I'd often go and pick up a copy of the game I played at the tournament at the show as a memento. But I do watch some game hunting videos and maybe it has influenced me in subtle ways.
    I have been getting a few extra copies of games I already had, so I would get a better overall price from the dealer on games I actually wanted for the collection.
    Are these extra games to help with preservation or for future revenue. Ah this is the influence of capitalism.

    Great topic Andy! I definitely started for the love of collecting, the love of gaming, and Nostalgia and that continues to be my primary driving factor and influence. Now with that being said I also resell on the side with my wife and that makes 25% of our yearly income to pay bills, get out of debt, etc. So reselling is also very important to me and I do some personal reselling to build the collection that I love as well. But as far as my content I like the focus to be on the Nostalgia and the fun of hunting and never knowing what you will find. Every now and then I do a more reselling focused video but not often. With all that being said I don't care what anyone does whether they focus on reselling, collecting for the Nostalgia, passion, etc, or a combination of both, as long as they are honest about it and their intentions. But I will say that personally I don't watch a ton of reselling content because I just don't find it fun or interesting...probably because I live it daily ok eBay haha
