Fluval Flex Set up and Modifications

  • Introducing a "NEW CHANNEL" and setting up a New Fluval Flex 15Gallon tank.. DIY - optimizing and modifying the filter to improve overall filtration in the aquarium.. This should improve the water circulation and filtration flow by 100%.
The way the tank filter is made the water comes in through the two intakes of the filter and just flows across the supplied filter media sponge... Water will always take the path of least resistance, so you will not get a good filtration with this design.I don't even see how this would even utilize the supplied small amount of biological media..
In this video I will modify the filter forcing the water to flow into the filter at the top intake flowing over ceramic rings, filter floss, Filter Pads and Bio Balls. Then it will flow down towards the bottom fill over into the second chamber exiting at the top dumping into the 3rd chamber where the Aquarium Heater, UV light and Pump are stored. Then sending the water back into the tank filtered..Before the modification the water entered top and bottom and flowed across the filter. I also add 2 large bags of Bio Balls , 1 lb of ceramic Rings , 1 lb of ceramic blocks(1 1/8" X 4" times 11) plus filter floss and filter pads to aid in cleaning the tank.. VS the 8-10 little ceramic rings a hand full of carbon and a filter that was supplied, I probably have increased the filtration by 4 or 5 hundred + percent.

This filter works PERFECTLY as is straight out of the box. I've had one for 4 years and the water stays crystal clear

A simple sponge has been proven time and time and time again to be an excellent filter material from mechanical to biological

I was under the impression that slowing the flow in the media was better water flowing to fast doesn’t allow the bacteria to break down the garbage

Water will take the path of least resistance.. So when it gets a little debre in it you are not getting any filtration..

I've got the Flex 57l and 123l, both with stock filters. Both my tanks have good flow and crystal clear water. I'm convinced you don't know what you're doing

I like the light idea with velcro, thank you, I shall use that. Did you change the pump to get a more powerful pump, or keep the one that came with the Flex 53L. I have a spare ecoflow 300 but that's for a 100l tank.... thank you.

Hi, how’s your tank doing now? I already have water and fish in my tank so I won’t be able to do the silicone. I think Steve is talking about putting filter floss and sponge in those slots that you silicone, just jamming it in there, is that correct? Do you think that will work? Also I know why you want to put that hole in the third chamber because you’re trying to get the water to go up through the filter instead of going out the bottom. so you do feel that’s necessary. I’m not sure how I’m going to do that. I’m not real handy and I’m new at all this. But really enjoying myself.

Thanks for making this video. I’m having problems with noise of the pump. It’s making the lid of my tank vibrate and the pump is loud in running. I made sure pump wasn’t touching the tank and I put a sponge under the pump. Is your pump loud? If so can you recommend a quiet pump for this tank?

One thing I did to my tank was removed that pre cut box on the lid that sits over the first chamber. I’m surprised more people don’t do this. It’s made to add a protein skimmer but I use the hole to jam in a bunch of Pothos and Lucky Bamboo to grow out of my tank. So my first chamber is all plant roots with some media at the bottom. It really helps with the nitrates!
Edit: Your tank is amazing btw. Wish you would make some more vids!
