  • I wanted to block off the intakes and slow the flow down in this tank. I was adding some fish that needed these adjustments and decided to share a video about it. Im really happy with how it turned out.

    For anyone watching now, these lights CAN grow lights, as long as you stick with low-tech and low-light types. My flex grew a jungle of java moss, pearlweed, and guppy grass. It also is supporting several crypts and clumps of subwassertang.

    • @veneonsiew6349
      @veneonsiew6349 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've grown stem plants like rotala macrandra green and h'ra too in them too. So the lights work, but of course, strong lights could be better.

      Mine has been going for just about a year, and has supported dwarf sag, java moss and fern, and some anubias. Also, likely most common forms of algae. That's with a 4 on, 4 off, 4 on, 12 off time schedule too!

    If you want to reduce the flow you could keep the oem pump and drill a small hole in the pipe from the pump so some of the flow is just returned to the pump chamber, if you want to undo this or make it adjustable just place a cable tie over the pipe and move it over the hole to partly block it.

    I know this video is old but I’m very glad you did this! I watched your unboxing and you sold me on this tank for my Betta with some snails and maybe eventually some shrimp. Not many people go this into depth over one tank. Just inbox, set it up, show an after, and give a review. Thanks for putting so much work into helping those of us who would never think of these things. Huge thumbs up!!

    My LFS recommended some mods and I’ve now got foam blocking off the vents in my left compartment. I used the foam block that came with the Flex and an additional piece to get all the way to the bottom. My middle compartment is now full to the brim with bags of ceramic media and the tank is doing great. I’ve modded the flow by cutting a slot in a piece of coarse sponge and placing this over the flow nozzles so the flow is now lessened and directed down rather like on the Fluval Edge.

  • @trgoth25

    Great mods! I have a fluval flex 15 in my bedroom. It's stocked with a couple sparkling gouramis, a scarlet badis, a few ruby tetras ( had 7 but some died, go figure) and 3 African dwarf frogs. I've had every everyone, even the frogs, explore the back part before the filter. The funny part is even the frogs are able to escape out through the grates on the bottom! My gouramis even seem to like going back through the top part to chill out. I'll probably have to make a sponge mod for at least cleaning the filter( the fish REALLY love to swim all the way to the pump area and get stuck) I'll definitely look into getting an LED suction mod for the top! Underneath the sponge filter part I put the biomedia that came with the tank at the bottom and covered it with some filter floss.

    Just for anyone needing smaller vent holes in this tank, if you call Fluval they will direct you to Hagen and there is a page on there that you can fill out and upload your receipt to them and they will send you little clip on vent covers that have smaller holes for free. I got mine in a couple of days. Baby fish could still get through but it's much better than before.

    Very clever (and obviously necessary in your case) mods to this tank. It's surprising that the aquarium isn't designed in such a way as to safeguard against tiny fish and shrimp from sneaking into the filter area. Fluval must know that this is the kind of aquatic life most aquarists are going to keep in a Flex. Good job on the mods!

    I have one of these and have blocked off the bottom vent and added a fine mesh to the top vent .
    I have added a bigger one of the lights he showed as it is more controlled have the original pump and have sorted out the angles for the spray bar and its all good .
    Also added a UV lamp to the center section obviously i had to block part off to keep the light in and redirect the water flow slightly made a big difference to water quality.
    And incase your wondering I have a shit load of small ghost tetra and white Mountain minoes , also have a beta and a knife fish in there and they are all doing fine.
    I would say the blocking off of the bottom vent didn't reduce the amount of water flowing but it does reduce the speed of the flow around the middle and bottom of the tank .

But I've run into a problem with low ph and my cherry shrimp are breeding and on absorbing all the calcium leading to low ph, so I replaced the charcoal with crushed coral in a pantiehoe sock on Saturday , hopefully it will help they even sell a protein skimmer , UV sterilizer, and special water change pumps for auto water changes. I disgarded the lid on the 15 and added a nice eheim led. The one large anubia now takes up the entire tank with leaves coming out of the water. Swiss Tropicals makes great filters and materials. I learned about this company watching these excellent Pecktec videos. I changed out the stock pump with a higher flow since it slowly died and replaced the filter sponge in the center compartment with better quality sponge from Swiss Tropicals. I should point out that the lighting on the larger 32.5 flex is far superior to the 9 or 15 flex.

    thanks for the idea of getting a new adjustable pump. even with fluval's new adjustments with the flex, and moving the valves up, the flow is just way too much for my betta. i've tried to move the valves to direct them towards the walls, i've moved them so that they're directly hitting a plastic 'betta leaf bed' to slow the flow, and i think it's just definitely a better idea to get another low flow pump.

It's hard for him to catch the food when it's swirling around on top, and he mostly stays to the left side of the tank... I bought a used 9 and 15 gallon and removed the filter compartment on both and use a sponge filter instead.
    Painted the back matte black,made a clear lid out of glass(with a hinge so a portion of the front could be lifted for feeding,I prefer a clear lid so more light gets into the tank,and I need a tight fit to avoid creatures escaping).
    I set a cheap nicrew light on top with the extensions pushed all the way in to set it a bit higher up.
    The tank looks amazing!
    I’d love to do this to the 32 gallon as well but have some concerns about the strength of the sealant used on it.

      Doesn’t take long to remove the baffle.Just run the blade along the sealant that’s holding it in place and pull it out.Then scrape the remaining sealant off
      with the razor blade.
      Use the acetone to remove any remaining residue and rinse the tank well after. :)

    The vent covers are still too large for the little guys. I inserted filter media into them. Works great and takes no space from the back.
    I notice that no one ever seems to mention that the powerhead included has no venturi option which is really thoughtless imo. If you're starting one of these up I highly recommend changing the powerhead as well to one with a venturi feature.
    Also do yourself a favor and heat with a small heater on the left hand side if you use the giant center filter it comes with. As it becomes clogged it lowers the water level on the right hand side which is no bueno for your heater.

    Any consideration to using the empty first chamber for foam, mechanical filtration, and stuffing the normal filter chamber with nodes ? We have both the 15 and two 9 gal for shrimp, betas, frogs. Well, not frogs and shrimp together. That ends nearly as badly as angelfish and shrimp..burp

    I've just got a 2nd hand Flex34 (sited bedside) and have had to add a very small internal filter (foam) with a venturi outlet, in order to get some aeration and is run along with the supplied pump - my transferred fishes were missing the aeration in my old tank provided the big internal filter. Don't know why Fluval don't offer the option of an add-on water outlet with venturi!

  • @pepperfalkiner579
    @pepperfalkiner579 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I looked at the light you suggested and in the comments someone asked if it would support plant growth and someone else replied this Plants generally require broad spectrum light for growth. LEDs pretty much just emit a specific wavelength based on color. Ex.: In combination with other lighting, the blue could be a great addition to aid in photosynthesis due to the wavelength it emits, but would not provide enough varied wavelengths on its own for proper plant care."
    So this doesn't sound like a great light to add to aid in plant growth.. do you have another suggestion?

    Hi. I have the same Fluval tank as your showing in your video here. It's a nice little tank but there are a few problems with it in my opinion. If you block the intake flow with sponge etc to slow down the water flow the water behind the partition will still continue to be pumped out. This can cause the water level behind the partition to drop really low and expose the heater and the pump to the air. I nearly lost the heater because of this. I've since modified the tank and removed the partition completely which gives a lot more room and no scum build up behind the partition to clean. Now it's fitration is a sponge filter with a small powerhead which gives a lot better circulation and water clarity, there's also no chance of fish being drawn into a partition and trapped as happened in the past. It's now a good tank for young fish, no more hassle with water level drop or missing fry. I haven't tried planting in this tank yet, how did you get on with your plants? Any success with the lighting? I'm thinking low light plants might be ok with it.

    • @pecktec
      @pecktec  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That chamber the same on so many of these in tank filters, empty’s out first no matter what’s in front of it. Because of the effects of evaporating water. I’m not saying your proposed changes aren’t good and worth while. But that specific issue is present in all these tanks.

    • @craigduncan8121
      @craigduncan8121 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pecktec Hi Pecktec. In my case it wasnt due to evaporation. It was the reduced water flow coming in the vents and the pump still pumping out the same flow of water, emptying the partition because the water couldn't get back in fast enough. I like the Flex since I removed the partition and fitted a powerhead though. It's a good little tank.

    I did something similar with the filter, only I got a large filter pad and folded it in thirds and put it in the large chamber. The problem is that it doesn't sit snug against the slots like yours does, I'll try cutting the middle as you did. Also, what is that disgusting goop on the filter tubing? The first time I took mine out I thought I must have left some type of paper wrapping on it when I installed it, but no, there was nothing to remove from the second one I put together. The flow is fine for the fish I currently have, but clever mod. I thought you were going to suggest drilling holes in the tube.

    • @pecktec
