That's awesome that someone proactively came to the class despite their bird not having any particularly nasty behavioral issues. If all bird owners were like that, there'd be a lot less re-homed birds, a lot less birds in shelters, and many more happy healthy birds!
If all birds were free there would be no need for therapy.
But they aren't. And birds raised in captivity
need a loving home of humans to care for them.

I bought a Sun Conure and trained her like a dog complete with hand commands. Her learning curve put the smartest dogs to shame. She is 19 years old now.
How would you describe your birds personality? Does it have a sense of humor? Is it cuddly, aloof, curious, mean, etc?
I've seen videos of crows where the crow seemed to enjoy causing mischief. Do you think parrots share a similar trait?

I hope we get an update on Millie down the road. Breaks my heart that she is 10 months old and struggling with so much!! Bless her owners heart, what a great woman for working so hard with her and seeking help for her... You guys were all so calm and patient with her, could definitely see her starting to relax and get more comfortable!
The owners hand was soo loose and positioned weird and then when she held her hand stiff she was literally shaking. I would feel uneasy stepping up onto that too!
I honestly taught her foot looked turned in slightly..its hard to know for sure but it looked that way when I seen the bird walking on the ground..
Right!? And the bird is only ten months old!
My hands are disabled and the same is true for my right arm and my two thumbs hsve atrophied. I haven't always been this way and I do wish I wasn't disabled.
However, I've had my parrot for 11 years-since she was a fledgling and she has adjusted to my increasing unsteadiness. She's intelligent,sentient and she's never anxious or hesitant when on me or flying to me.
She knows that she is loved and she trust me and in turn, I trust her with all of my being.
She's amazing and I have honestly thought about having her as my official "service animal."
I'm blessed to have such a precious parrot in my life. We are an inseparable team.

@@dg.262 Your post is interesting. Did your bird have any experience with others before you? I wonder if birds notice the difference between a disability and a person that has anxiety or nervousness. For example, if your hand trembles due to a physical condition the bird could initially mistake that for something else. With time the bird would notice your personality and physical traits and become use to it. However, if a different person came into the picture and was physically nervous would the bird assume they were just being normal due to their experience with you?
It's interesting, how do birds assess us as individuals? Do they judge us all the same? I don't know. You would have much more insight.

cant get her to respond to less childish language lol. shes a dove, so training is less important and bloody than a macaw. doves arent motivated by treats in the same way. praise and kisses do the trick.
I say "come on" and "off you get"
Simple and to the point. I find that sometimes if I'm asking a bird to step downwards onto my finger, I'd stumble over "step up" as a command and same getting one to step up off my hand. So I have a my own all rounder commands.
"Uppa the footsies!" actually sounds old-world and quite cute....the way my Norwegian grandmother might have said it. ❤️🇳🇴
I give clients so much credit for being vulnerable enough to say, what could I do better? And Jamie and Dave credit for being fully truthful but never shaming.
Noticing that she reacted to hand movement is PROOF you are amazingly talented with birds!
I'm seeing that Millie's owner's hand is limp... your hand is very stiff... I'm sure that this is part of the nervousness... when her hand is supported by the perch it gets easier for two reasons... it's more sturdy, and it's closer. I'd say if she could stiffen her fingers and give the impression of strength this would improve stepping up. Perhaps they're both learning!

Totally agree and additionally i just realized why i haven't had this problem, because i have a hobby in partner dancing and am used to giving equal resistance when my hand receives pressure... funny the things that can link to bird training :D

Can we get some arm and hand exercises so we can better stabilize our big birds? I think the step up problem might just be me now
Such magnificent Birds. I know that the owners are dedicated to the macaws, but it still breaks my heart to see them in captivity.
If it’s any consolation, the macaws are on the CITIES list due to lack of habitat. These domesticated macaws are better off, at this time in history, living in peoples' homes.
Your videos help my bird fever. I want one SO bad, but I know now is not the time and place.

I noticed that the owner moves her hand a lot. I assume she is trying to compensate for the macaw’s movement, but still. Perhaps the macaw doesn’t think it’s a steady perch since it moves so much. She also flies very well to the hand, and the owner moves her hand much less when getting the bird to fly.
Macaws also are sort of heavy and they explained that she struggles to sit on a perch.

Idk if this was an issue but I saw the owner hand shaking while trying to hold millie I am thinking maybe thats why her bird was having anxiety because she was not confident to hold her bird on her hand idk just a thought
I agree, she’s not offering her a sturdy enough perch, what the heck?
I noticed millies owners hand tremors as soon as Millie steps on and I wondered if that shaking is creating Millie to feel unsecure and read it at anxiousness which makes her anxious ??
Hello Jamie 👋 thank you so much for posting all the videos you do. I am a new bird owner and have had my pineapple green-cheek for only a few months now. Even though I am not working on training right now your videos have helped me start off on the right foot with my feathered friend. She/he is so trusting, and loving, honestly she is the best therapy animal ever. My ultimate goal is free flight. However, her wings were clipped when I purchased her so we are building a strong friendship. I do take her places with me and she does very well, she gets to pick out her own toys. Anyway just wanted you to know that even the people who aren't following your program are still benefiting from your videos. I think my Christmas present to myself will be your training program 😁
You guys are awesome! You're doing great work making sure people don't get frustrated with their parrots and abandon them.
When I tried to teach my dog to drop a ball into my open hand I failed for ages because I tried to help her. So I would move my Hand under her mouth a lot rather than letting her fail and trying herself while my hand was stable and not moving at all. The stepping up session reminded me a lot of that. Interesting that some things are really the same cross species.
Enjoy watching you and Dave work together, smooth teamwork. I can understand why Millie felt unsteady, and she clearly prefers a thicker perch, (so to speak) so a small human hand makes her hesitate. Only 10 months old, she will have it down in no time thanks to you two. Thank you for sharing, see you soon.

I expect I make the same expression when my nieces are trying to get my cockatiels to step up.
It's the way she's sort of chasing the bird with her hand, rotating it this way and that and holding it rather limp. If I were the macaw, I would be nervous to trust that perch too.
When it comes to my nieces, they also tend to flinch away when my birds go to do a stability check with their beaks. It's not even a bite, doesn't hurt one bit. I managed to get one of my nieces to just keep their hand there once while one had a peck fit (basically rapid nibbling when moody or frustrated). She was surprised it didn't hurt, but then still had the flinching issue.
I like how you guys are so patient though and change the training around the birds issues.
Thank you for posting these it's been helping a ton with my poor rescue eclectus who's whole body would shake when he would even see a hand. He has come so far but still has a long way to go

We actually had a similar issue with our Harlequinn Macaw around the same age. She was uncomfortable about stepping on hands and preferred arms. It seemed to be a lack of confidence in her ability to balance or her level of body strength. At that age, even though they are large birds, they still are not full grown and don't have the same dexterity and confidence as an adult. With her, we let her use arms for step up and later transitioned to hands when her balance and dexterity improved. Between 15 and 18 months, she seemed to do fine with stepping up on a hand. She also appeared more filled out physically and less of a baby-like appearance.
I love watching these master classes- so many different situations, birds and owners, I learn something new every time!
This was so interesting!! I hesitated to bring my Ringneck baby to masterclass this year but I think I will bring him next year!!

I wish my fat galah was motivated by apple, he is motivated by high fat treats, sunflowers seeds in particular! He holds a grudge if I try apple, sadly he is too fat to fly far enough to exact revenge. He has lost 10 g since I started BirdTricks diet, only another 60g or so to go. Thanks for the great video’s.

I really enjoyed this video. I've got a CAG & she steps up we've been working with the toe hold & getting better. I learned that a basic step up is so important, something that should be worked on daily.

The bird stands up high and straight. Of course it can't balance that way.

What do you do in the instance your bird won't take treats? My Galah won't eat anything other than her pellets, and nutriberries and won't eat from my hand. She's a very loving bird, and she isn't afraid of me, but training is hard with no treats.
Katie Minton don’t give the nutriberries as part of the normal diet and convert one meal to our seasonal feeding system 💚
@9:13 the bird is shaking with fear with hand step up. Have you seen them shake more than this in training sessions?
Millies owner keeps her hand in a bad position. Like she’s doing it sideways instead of up and down.. setting her up fo failure.
Guess I was lucky rehoming an older bird. She is so easy to handle, well most of the time lol.

A firmer hand/firmer fingers might help? If the hand the bird is stepping onto is saggy it could be a deterrent?

My bird is afraid of my hands as well, she is only 19 weeks, I have had her for a week and she has made amazing progress bit yeah she is very afraid of hands. (She is an Alexandriane)
I really enjoyed these lovely ladies and it's so refreshing to see people getting control of bad habits OR MORE so just getting a headstart BEFORE as habits form over years and then have a Ton of problems that makes things much more difficult to to fix.
They both had a HUGE head start by applying and implementing important things like diet and so on.
I like that now popular Fraser from The movie " Forest Gump " , Life is like a box of Chocolate's you never know what your going to get, which apples to people getting and expecting based on what they were told, this bird is fine.
I'm going to say it again that this whole getting bite +++++ for me is a deal breaker. I got nailed countless times by the bird I bought for my daughter which saddly back then had NO CLUE about anything to do with handling birds and she was bonded with my eldest who finished school and left the bird with me.
I now understand it's not personal and by simply as one lady said " Bing watching your classes and every single vidio of yours for 2+ years , I would be in a VERY CALMING PLACE to have a bird now. But stuff happens and unable to handle any bird now.
But I found several other ways to be involved and helpful.
I'm positive like me others that follow your life with birds and the many ways there is to raise a Happy Healthy bird. I know I often point people your way when I reas someone asking for any kind of help for their bird. 🦜🦜👍👍👍👍👍.
In regards to her shoulder rushing question, I wonder if what falconers do would be useful. When the falcon wants to move off of the glove, they raise their hand up so that their hand is now the "highest" point, which encourages them to go back to the hand. Might be a useful "bandaid" if you accidentally encounter the shoulder rushing situation.
So weird to see the dark eyes on those birds. My B&G is 19 years old and his eyes are bright yellow. I remember when I first got my bird, his eyes were dark like these birds. I think my birds eyes brightened up about 5 or 6 years into our relationship.
I wish y’all were close to me. I would LOVE to take my Galah Jolee to class and learn better ways to raise and train my girl!!! I watch your videos and try really hard, I’ve learned so very much from y’all! So thank you for that!! But nothing is like hands on training from you🥰. And I am sure there are several things I could change and do better!!

Hey bird tricks, nice video. I have an Indian ring neck that I am having trouble teaching to step up. I have tried luring and some other things but nothing seems to work. Any tips?
Can you start with subtitles? I have a hard time hearing sometimes what is being said when there is a lot of background sounds nad english is my second language :)

or been relaxed next to a hand ?
instead of going strait to full step up on the hands.

Unusual for blue and gold macaws to act like that. My local bird seller had many of them and I never came across one that wasn't very calm and gentle and at ease with people. Maybe it says as much about the breeder as the nirds.
Some Parrots do get anxious sometimes which I notice and some other Birds get anxious too and I can tell how anxious Parrots get like we do. 😯😔😐😐😐😐😕
Someone tell me the purpose of holding or pressing the feet once Millie steps up?
I had a rescue red headed Mexican who recently passed at 53. He was never able to do all these things but we are interested in another bird one day. The red head was our first experience with a larger bird. Had lots of smaller ones though through the yrs. 😁
Silver Carolina by being able to gently hold/rest your thumb on the birds foot, you can feel their shifts in weight and body language, allowing you to respond better to your bird's wants/needs!
should have done a jackpot reward on the first time using thumb as barrier and it worked
Where did you get your Macaw?
Hi I have a Indian Ring neck, his name is Blue...he is Beautiful I Love him to bits, learns so quick by listening to what I say, very smart! But I have another problem he doesn't want to climb on my hand if I approach him, looks like he is scared! I originally got him from people who had children and maybe they teased him a lot, I have to open the cage and show him that it is open by inserting my hand and tick on the bell. How can I win his confidence to overcome this?

I feel so sorry for these pet parrots, they are such complex animals, they are not meant to be alone in cages they should be with their own kind in the wild.
Is the blue and gold foot turned in a little ..the girl said she couldn't perch when she got her and she seems to walk funny on the flat I can't see to be sure but it looked like it after she was asking for step up from the ground..could be a lot of her problem she seemed off balanced or something like that..
The owner was really desperate to get the macaw on her hand which is by she wasn’t getting as good results as Jamie. In the second half she was doing a lot better, but now she just loosely had her hand out and was moving it a lot to keep it in front of her.
