Totally agree with you mate, in fact, i rarely watch the big channels, much prefer to watch people at a similar level to myself, riding places i've ridden or wish to ride. It's all about the memories and the laughs along the way for me, admittedly i do try and make it a bit more interesting and entertaining so others can watch, i certainly don't class myself as a good rider, i just enjoy riding, that should be the only real criteria, not are you good enough.
    Fantastic video mate 👍

Thanks mate. For me, it really comes down to how much fun and how much passion comes across, regardless of riding skills. When you get videos of a group of mates just messing around, taking the mickey out of each other, etc., it reminds me of what I love about mountain biking.

I prefer watching the less polished, more grass roots.. every-day riders, that make mistakes, and learn from them. The majority of us, can relate too!

That’s my take too, although I do watch pro’s videos too; love Brendan Fairclough’s videos for instance (although having met, chatted and had beers with him on occasion, it’s possibly in that example because he’s a genuinely lovely bloke)

Couldn't agree more with you. I'm far more likely to watch a video by you or one of your contemporaries than anything else as it's more relatable. I'm a mid-40s dad with a £350 bike from Halfords, Red Bull are never going to be knocking at the door with a contract offer. I've watched plenty of your videos and similar ones of others', getting ideas of local places to ride, skills I need learn & kit I need to buy. In fact, I think it was stumbling across one of your Delamere videos that made me realise I could use the bike for more than just family bike rides. Keep doing what you're doing.

Well said mate! As somebody that has only been riding a couple of years I like watching smaller channels as often its a more realistic goal for where I want to be as a rider or at least if I think its somewhere I could give a go without dying!!! There is a very small percentage of people who ride like pros. In general, we are all in your bracket of rider which means we relate to how you ride. We rely on your POV. You're giving us the green light to ride trails that are out there and giving us the confidence to think they are within our reach. I've watched you for a while now and I can relate to you, so I look to find the same kind of trails. Keep up the brilliant channel and do what you love, it comes across in waves and we all want to see more and more. Nice one Jason.

I really do think I am an average rider; I've had the good luck to ride with a lot of people over the years and can safely say that many have been far better than me (annoyingly 😂). Not sure many enjoyed themselves any more than I do though!

As a small channel myself I was pretty disappointed in what the Pinkbike guys said, not everyone can be a pro but I can tell you now, I have a raced bikes for 35 years and in my prime would wipe the floor with those guys, hell i'd probably even destroy them now in my 50s.
To actually say that us lesser riders shouldn't post videos was a very bad choice of words when most people are probably better than them, I've bumbled my way down many tracks and trails but nailed many many more.
Keep up the good work everyone.

It’s their arrogance and seeming misunderstanding of what TH-cam is that gets me. If they’d have just said that they weren’t interested in watching videos by average riders then that’s fine, I know a lot of people feel and do that.
Maybe it was said to stir up a controversy and discussion but I would say it’s backfired and doesn’t reflect well on the organisation they work for and represent.
I imagine they are loving all this attention…

Epic video mate and you put the point across perfectly in my book, what is about some people who like to think they’re better than others, I got into mountain biking as a means of carrying on the 35kg I lost and getting fitter, the video making for me is just a side bar to that, I am certainly not a good rider or video maker but it’s not what this is all about, in my book TH-cam is just a way of reaching out to others and showcasing the different places in which mountain biking is open to, keep up the with the great videos mate and stuff those people 🤘👊

Thanks mate. I kind of miss the lockdown days and the silly videos where I just rode around talking rubbish, hence why I've been occasionally doing something similar recently. Was a strange time though from the perspective of making MTB videos, because to all intents and purposes, the riding was the least notable element of the videos. Strangely, (especially with the second lockdown in '21|), the videos took a lot more effort than ones where you can get out riding somewhere half decent.

I don't listen to the PinkBike podcast or watch their videos for this very reason. When I saw Ryan's video I went and listened to the podcast and was pretty shocked they said that out loud even though we all know it's what they think.
Been toying with the idea of making a "reaction" video myself - but you've said it all. Nice one.

Thanks mate. I too don't usually pay much attention to Pinkbike, other than watching the content that Cathro is involved in, so only became aware of this through Ryan's video and then looked into it. You're right that it's probably just their personal opinion (and probably that of others too) but to voice it on such a public platform is not wise, even if it was supposed to be tongue in cheek, as some commenters have said.
I say go with making a video on it too, it's a subject worth discussing and maybe expanding on. Probably best to not mention Barelli's 'happiness' though, or we could start up a rumour 😂

Totally agree with you. How good a rider, or video are is subjective. I'd rather watch a video of a rider who is closer to my level than somebody who has skills I'll never have. Watching your videos gives me ideas of places to ride and also an idea of how difficult or easy it is and therefore some idea of if I'd be able to tackle it ( Borrowdale Bash and Helvelin are on my to do list )... I'm not the best rider but your channel and a couple of others ( Trailfinder and Lakedistrict rider ) inspired me to upgrade my aging and quite frankly shite Gopro Hero 3 to something much better ( Insta 360 X3 ). I've now started recording my rides and uploading them to TH-cam again, like I said I'm not the best rider but hopefully people watch my video's and think, that looks fun and something I could ride.. I'm not interested in having a huge channel or making money out of the video's, not that's likely to happen with 12 subscribers 🤣. Keep doing what your doing, your video's are entertaining and fun. • @Stopadoodledoo

The thing with TH-cam and getting high views, subs, etc., is that mountain biking is possibly one of the worst things you can choose as a video subject as it's so niche; I swear that a channel about how to sellotape dust covers for books in a way that doesn't show would do better 😂

A couple of other commenters have expressed that it was possibly tongue in cheek or that it’s been perceived incorrectly but at the end of the day, there seems to be a fair few people who are put out by it and not just those of us who upload to TH-cam.
TH-cam is for everyone, it gives us average people a platform to share our content (good and bad) and a lot of people do interact with the thousands of small channels.

Some of the pro’s channels are really entertaining, others I find I click away very quickly although that’s the same for all channels really.
My personal preference is to watch videos where there’s more going on just riding as some of the main reasons I ride are to be out in the great outdoors, preferably having a laugh with mates and messing around.
I get the aspirational element but to be honest, at 53 with arthritis in my left knee (result of messing up a road gap 20 years ago), I am just happy that I can do what I do.
Saying that, I have always wanted to get a (meaningless) KOM on a Lakes descent on Strava; I have/had one but it was on such a short trail that hardly anyone ever rides (it’s just too sloppy most of the year to bother with), then it’s really meaningless 😂
The other issues with that goal is that I don’t really use Strava much any more, and filming whilst talking a lot kind of distracts me 😂

I see what you mean about context but I do like a good rant/ramble and to be honest, it is a subject that I find interesting. As someone who's an average rider and publishes MTB videos to TH-cam, I am obviously biased but if I didn't have a channel (as many don't) then what would I think, and what would I watch? I have mates who only really subscribe to and watch the big channels or those of the pro's (they sub to me because I am a mate - at least I think they do 😂).
There's probably a lot who think and do the same; maybe I am stuck in this TH-cam bubble. I am interested in hearing the opinions of those who only watch videos made by good riders - problem being they are unlikely to watch this to hear my opinion. It would make for a great discussion though (and their opinion would be as valid as mine)

@@theboypandalad It's such a bizarre opinion to hold really, given that the purpose of TH-cam is literally to allow anyone to upload videos. It's not like people are forced into watching content they don't want to see.

I guess it all comes down to how you view TH-cam itself? Is it a tool to show you how to do things or show you trails. Or is it a source of entertainment? It can be both at times and neither! Lets face it, we've all seen those videos of someone trying to record a trail on their bike while holding a mobile phone! Everyone can agree to hate on those guys 😂👍

I think Pinkbike is full of shite. The authors and the people that seem to use it seem to be very out of touch with reality. But that said I think a lot of people that have made being "something something MTB" on the youtubes their livelihood got a bit offended at what seemed to be a joke at their expense. Both sides take themselves way too seriously.
BTW, I like your videos because they aren't "ARE TWO WHEELS TOOO MANY?" or other clickbait crap that everyone that make this a living seems to be trying. I'm not too interested in the latest super amazing products or seeing people almost kill themselves over bigger and bigger jumps, and racing is pretty boring as a spectator. Seeing people messing around and having fun reminds me to go out on the bike at the weekend and not put it off.

    • @Stopadoodledoo
      @Stopadoodledoo  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Maybe they've become too big, to the point where they see themselves as the only true voice in MTB?
Thing with the big channels is that they've had this before but in different ways, with comments relating to why are they getting sponsored by bike companies, etc? The obvious reason is because companies get more visibility of their products through social media than through racing.
To be honest, I don't think any of this was aimed at the large MTB content creators; whether people like it or not, they have a lot of influence and it would not be wise to upset their subs base, etc. I think Ryan (Loam Ranger) fully got this and is defending ALL MTB content creators, as is Seth to an extent in his comment on Ryan's video.
Personally, I would never go for full on clickbait; I do feel a bit cringe at times when I use words like Crazy and Insane though, as it's all relative really - one man's Crazy is another man's Meh. There's a fine line for sure over what's acceptable and what's blatantly bigging something up for views, finding that balance is a challenge because you do want to draw people in but at the same time, you don't want to become a laughing stock.
Along those lines, I avoid fistbumps and the like because I think they're also a bit cringe, especially when they are awarded for just getting to the bottom of a trail without falling off and bumping your bottom on a stone 😂

Nah, you have "charm" which is different. I think people that do a hobby for money quickly lose the charm (because it's work now..) and that's why professional media like PB and full time content creators annoy me equally.

I like watching average everyday riders, but I am sick of seeing rich older dudes with ridiculous production quality, expensive camaras, super expensive bikes and vehicles to get to and from the bike parks show off their wealth while also making more money because it seems Social Media's algorithm absolutely favours and spoils the already wealthy. I've seen enough of these CEO dentist youtube channels riding trails. Post whatever you want, but I'm kinda sick of watching people flaunt their wealth, much prefer dudes on hardtails showing me trails with crappy quality footage because gopros are expensive.

I guess it's just that a lot of riders are getting older and have expendable income; wouldn't really call it flexing though and I guess it's not their fault that the algorithm favours them. I am aware of one channel that matches your description though, where the view figures are somewhat suspect (especially when compared to the number of comments, etc., they get); I guess giving the impression of success is just incredibly important to them, regardless of cost.
Weird thing is, they won't be making much back through their videos being monetised. A video I made last month currently has 2.7k views; that equates to £6.50 in revenue.

I've noticed quite a few that are suggested to me do this. It seems to be the MTB community in general, for the most part, is made up of people with extremely good careers and disposable incomes. Anytime I park at the local trails theres numerous travel vans or $80k SUV's with the uprights bike racks loaded with dentist bikes, and a family gets out and the 12 years old are on bikes that cost more than my car and bike put together, you could call me jealous, but it just seems to be that most people riding mountain bikes are rich AF. And really, I dont see how watching these dads with GoPros riding on $8k+ bikes is appealing, I get tired of it as they just roll over stuff that would have taken skill on a lesser bike, they let the money do the work instead of riding features how they should be ridden. I much prefer watching people from BMX backgrounds actually jump around the trails whether theres actual jumps or not than watching someone just pedal and roll over everything, and by roll over I dont mean not get air, they get air and land hard, and the suspension does all the work, they have no finesse or style and its just cringe to watch. It is what it is though, I just block said channel from my recommendations, just as I block road biking, its not interesting to me but it might be interesting to some people.
As for what PinkBike said, I think they might have been referring to what I'm getting at, rich people making money off TH-cam for mediocre riding and letting their tools whether its the bike, the camaras, the editors, the private backyard facilities do all the work.@@Stopadoodledoo

@@augmented2nd666 you may be right about the target of their comments but it does come across as ‘not good, don’t bother’.
You do see riders over here that match the ones you mention but they are probably the minority (although it’s rare I go to bike parks). VW Transporters and the like are more common than they used to be (SUV’s aren’t that common over here) but more often than not it’s a family car or hatchback, bikes crammed in, blankets down to try and keep the mud off the interior (my car, a 14 year old Volvo D5 estate, stinks of sheep poo, mud and rotten rice, following a chain of events where a balloon with rice in it burst, followed not long after with me forgetting to close the sunroof and windows prior to torrential rain 😂).
As for bikes, you see a real mix out, lot of e-bikes (often on zero interest finance, I suspect) but also see a lot of older, much loved and abused bikes too. Hardtails never really went out of fashion over here too, and especially in winter, you see loads of them out (easier to clean and maintain when getting caked in mud all the time).
I’ve just waffled on for ages, probably off topic, but maybe it’s different over here because of the sheer amount of places we get to ride (legally and not so much), or maybe I’m not going to the places where the All The Gear crew go to and not watching their videos as they’re doing stuff that doesn’t appeal to me.
My preference is riding down technical trails and round jumps (admittedly because I am useless at them)

Honestly theres tons of people who arent good who dont bother, I would never see a reason to upload footage of myself (i'd have to buy a camara first, I dont even own one) just trotting around trails near me. I get that it can be useful to make trail previews for others wanting to ride those exact trails, but really I'd rather ride trails blind myself and figure them out as I go. Other than that, I cant think of any other reason to make a video, pretty much any how to has already been made by countless pros, pro mechanics, and even the companies who make the products.
I think the point is the over saturation of the MTB youtube channels affecting the algorithm by pumping it full of videos, you see this in many hobbies that people film for youtube, its that "creator" mentality, that self importance they exude when they make videos can be felt. And that goes for other things too, theres countless musician channels that shouldnt exist, but they do, most are ignorant, assume their audience are morons, and all copy eachother constantly, whether its playing slayer on a banjo, or quantizing their audio to align it perfectly to a grid for an unnatural yet perfect sound through computer manipulation.
TH-cam itself is kinda just becoming a cesspool of marketing strategies looking for money, and its getting more difficult to weed through the trash, even if its super polished high quality trash. Fortunately theres that "dont recommend this channel" button on the homepage feed so if you see something absolutely cringe just pop back there and click it.
I'm on the island next to whistler, seems like everyone and their grandma ride MTB and have done so their whole lives. I grew up riding skateparks on BMX every day, mountains just didnt interest me until recently moved to a more hilly region and got a bike with gears. I basically only encounter enduro riders, hardtails are almost none existent, I prefer them and got a devinci kobain which is treading the waters of enduro without the frame gimble. I find it feels like a big BMX and am starting to enjoy the black trails with little bumps and jumps and whatnot, the drops look doable but the landings almost always have an immediate sharp turn or too many trees in the way so I dont bother, I'd rather drop a 12 stair set to flat on BMX than a forest drop and hit a tree or something.@@Stopadoodledoo

@@augmented2nd666 I honestly don’t think of myself as a creator, I just started making silly videos during the first lockdown for something to do (literally riding around Chester, usually at around 7am, prattling on about utter rubbish; it motivated me to get out on the bike). Lockdown finished, I carried on and somehow, a small group of people seemed to like what I was doing.
Admittedly, for a while, I fell into the trap of wanting my channel to grow, to the point where I would try and ride somewhere different every week.
Kept that up for a year and then realised that I wasn’t riding where I particularly wanted to anyway more, so decided to do what I wanted to do and ride where I wanted, even if channel growth slowed down (which it did, considerably). Do I regret that? Not at all.
I do like making videos, if I am honest I prefer making the silly ones more than the riding ones, even though their appeal is way less. There’s no real desire or illusion of ‘fame’, the way I am in videos is pretty much how I am in real life (a loud, annoying piss taking idiot with an opinion on everything). As mentioned in the video, I try to get across the fun element of messing around on bicycles.
I know the above is my story/justification but I imagine many of my peers feel the same. We (as in the guys I ride with regularly) are always a bit shocked, flattered and taken aback when people recognise us from our videos.
End of the day, I/we love riding bikes and have done so for decades. We also like making videos but if TH-cam was to disappear tomorrow, I wouldn’t be heartbroken and would ride my bike just as much.
