I worked for the same company from 1983 to 2018. My company vans were all Astravans. I had every incarnation. The H version was by far the best. I had the 120bhp version which went like sh*t off a shovel.

Not to be a killjoy, but I had a friend who purchased a very base model (3 door) in early 87, it was ultra modern in design, compact but slow. However it must be reviewed in respect of its time and not from a modern perspective.

We used to call this car (Sold as Opel Kaddet E in Europe) as "The Teardrop", because you'd start to cry as soon as you see the amount of rust this car inhibits.

In the late 80s/early 90s my neighbour had one of these Astra. I thought it very dull. However, it would indeed prove a head turner if I happened upon one now.
The car subject to the Mustard review looks in incredibly good order all round. I am sure someone will snap it up before long.
I personally had a later 93 Astra which was indeed a dull but perfectly steady and useful car.
My neighbour replaced his Astra in 93 with a brand new Rover 214SLi in British Racing Green! Well you would, wouldn't you!

Great review and thankyou for sharing. Beautiful condition and the posh 1.3 L, with clock, Philips 4 speaker stereo & ciggie lighter, I had a 1987 1.2 merit 3 door in dark red with same beige interior, it was OHV 55bhp, strangely the Nova’s 1.2 was OHC, I longed for a Astra 1.3 OHC 75bhp, but bought a Sierra 1.8 LX instead

  • @doctorhugocat

I'm surprised by how much I like this little car nowadays; the cool 80s vibe makes them stand out in a positive way. 75bhp from a 1.3 is no joke, and I agree about the colour. I was very sad that GM sold Vauxhall recently; great shame. I don't know why GM didn't import this car into the USA to compete with the Escorts and later the Focus which were doing well here.

My dad gave me his one that was sitting for over 10 years. Im in South Africa so these are called the Opel Kadett E. My dads one was a 3 door and a 2l 8v fuel injection model. Unfortunately i was not able to save that shell as itbwas super rusty. I ended up finding another 3 door shell and swapping everything into it. And yes our version has a spoiler as standard :)

The memories! Another great video. Your car overviews are the best on youtube! My uncle used to have one of these. Pretty sure it was a C reg and the mileage had gone round the clock! It makes you wonder how adults coped back then, sitting in the back of cars.

I always thought these cars were vile in every way. I later had to drive one for work (Irish police). We had the saloon version which looked even worse than the hatchback. I was so glad when they got rid of it and gave us a brand new 1990 Opel Vectra. I loved that car and even bought a new 1994 1.7TD Vectra saloon as my private car a few years later.

That's a nice Astra. Yes I'd run one over a modern anyday. Those tall tyres with side wall flex comfort.

I remember a neighbour that had a facelifted mk2 Astra with the same wheel trims. It was a 1.6 auto. The back wheel arches are flat like a Carlton and 3dr Nova. Don't know why 5dr Nova's had round ones though.

you could have asked which engine it has....I can't believe fuel flap. it would suite smaller cars back then, but not this one. I don't like rear end design solution similar to seat leon mk1 or focus mk2. it had best aerodynamics in its class. it was very good competitor to overrated and then aging golf mk2. still, I can't like it at all, but I do respect it. wheel trim is pretty at least....anyway, nice test and I'm glad I can watch cars on your channel and not only junk in the yard :)

Wonderful to see a nice and clean car from the 80s. I miss my first car that was a 3 door version (Opel Kadett 1.3s GL). Despite the simplicity (not even a rev counter with an engine that loved to rev with a peculiar bass sound - the only special thing was called the "econometer" to explore more efficiently the overdrive gear), it had something special, like a predisposition to be exploited to its full potential without become too dangerous. It was a light car (860kg) with good aerodynamics and I think the shape is still attractive, specially in GTE/GSI versions.

We had an 84/85 early non turbo diesel at work in the late eighties. A 1.6 I think - so slow, but it had already done 278k and never missed a beat.
