    Tip: Homonculus can cast touch spells for you. Mending is a touch spell. Because of this, Homonculus can repair things for you at range or even repair itself. Need to fix the outside of your floating ship? Or maybe a bridge before you cross it?

    • @RantingRagingRelks
      @RantingRagingRelks 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Have a battle Smith with a humanoid steel defender wearing a backpack holding the homunculus with a window on the inner back so the homunculus can touch the defender, you know have a war bot with a repair kit strapped to it's back

    • @ercERCR
      @ercERCR 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      But isn't mending like a minute to cast?, now you would have a repair every 10 turns, or am i reading it wrong?

    • @engilaru
      @engilaru 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ercERCR no, you are right. Not the best for combat so you'd rarely find yourself having to make your Homonculus repair itself, but it is handy for fixing hard to reach places since the Homonculus can fly and is tiny so it can get into small places.

      Dude I love catapult. I was DMing for a group one time and during one of the first sessions they came across a sleeping quarter full of goblins. Without missing a beat one of them decides to use catapult and the only item they could think of in the weight limit was a pillow. I rolled the saving throw and got a nat 1. The situation was so funny that I wanted to make the outcome special. I ended up having the goblin get one shot by a pillow, which then exploded filling the room with feathers and blinding all of the other enemies and somehow suffocating one of the other goblins too if I remember correctly. First of many amazing uses of catapult.

      Gary Boyles my mind rebelled at the physic that’s would require (I know it’s a game but still🤷🏽‍♂️). Do the same thing by modifying the actual arrow to enlarge itself on a hit, an arrow head/shaft goes in and then swells to the size of a javelin. Could also make the ammo difficult to craft or only allow a certain number of shots a day.

    I'm going to try having my githyanki artificer (battle smith) use _create bonfire,_ gang up on the target with the steel defender, and take Sentinel. If the target attacks the steel defender, I get Sentinel's attack. If the target attacks me, the steel defender gives it disadvantage (and damage later). If it tries to move (and we're positioned correctly, which we'll aim to do), at least one of us gets an opportunity attack (steel defender can use reactions without my input, only actions on his turn need my attention). If the target stays, he's dealing with the fire every turn. I can't wait to try it out!

    The artificer has access to two cool constructs the humunculus and the steel defender. Both can understand you but neither can tell you what the hell they are seeing or what's happening. You don't have a telepathic bond and you can't see through their senses. However if you take the message cantrip both can now talk to you at 120ft.

    I wonder how many Artificer's, given DM allowing of Feats, will take Magic Initiate &/or Spell Sniper. Not to mention, I'd imagine those that want to have better casting viability will choose any of the Races/Subraces that grants additional cantrips/spells through racial ability like the Elven (High Elf grants 1 cantrip from the Wizard spell list; Drow grants Dancing Lights Cantrips + Faerie Fire (1/LR) + Darkness (1/LR) though for Drow, Charisma is their Spellcasting Ability; Some Racial Feats for the Elven Races also grant additional spells, though for the SA's are Drow = Charisma, High = Intelligence, Wood = Wisdom), Tiefling (Subraces grants spells + if Abyssal (UA) Tiefling's are allowed then even more added spells, though slightly random. Though, Charisma is their SA), Gnome (Forest grants Minor Illusion Cantrip while Rock Gnome would be more "built" towards Artificer in general), Genasi, Gith, Firbolg (though Wisdom is their SA for the racial spells), etc

    • @TheodoreMinick

      Been playing a Rock gnome artificer since the gunsmith, and the first version was a skillmonkey, not really a caster. The second version brought it closer to the caster they wanted, but it needed a feat or two like ritual caster, to bring it up to par.
      The final version definitely benefits from spell sniper, but the main reason I had ritual caster was find familiar, and the homunculus servant is better in almost every way than a familiar. I do miss The Right Cantrip for the Job, but the magic item savant/master/etc makes up for it. Bandolier of wands, baby. The Artillerist is 100% the Wandslinger.

    • @Altyrell
      @Altyrell 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@TheodoreMinick Yeah, pretty much everyone misses the "The Right Cantrip for the Job" Ability. Since they made a Class Ability Variant UA, I wouldn't be surprised if some DM's would be okay with re-adding in that Ability to the Artificer.
      Yeah, with the "Pets" that Artificer's get, it makes me laugh that the Beast Master (Ranger's Subclass) pets are still underpowered & require a nice DM to allow for them to be better viable/on par with the other Pets. Hell, even the Warlock's Pact of the Chain Familiar is better then the Beast Master's in some ways lol

    • @conradkorbol
      @conradkorbol 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Altyrell I mean at level 5 any creature has to oass a dc 14 strength check or be knocked prone and the wolf can pretty much always have advantage on attacks and at level 7 they can attack and the ranger can attack and bonus attack the wolf’s attacks are magic.
      The Almirante gives you a dagger that that has a 22 passive perception that reeks in sight or hearing. (Granted your dm has to allow you to use it since it’s from a module) but other companions get blind sight.
      The beast master companion has way more ultilty. And I have played one multiple times and my companion has always is useful. Most players are just dumb and don’t actually
      Understand how the beast master functions.
      For example the giant wolf spider can attack your fallen allies and stabilize them at the end of combat. Especially if you are out off healing spells and your cleric is down.

    Catapult can chuck about a gallon jug of acid, alchemist's fire, lubricant, poison or stinky fluid at a target.
    That's roughly five times more than a single vial's dose. Talk to your DM about damage or area burst effects.

  • @neoman4426
    @neoman4426 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    One of my favorite combos is Absorb Elements and Thorn Whip. Despite the fact that it's very ranged Thorn Whip is a melee spell attack meaning you can knock people out or deliver the stored Absorb Elements or whatever from 30 feet away (or 60 if you have Spell Sniper or Sorc levels for Distant Spell, or 120 with both) which is awesome. My UA one my go to flavoring for Thorn Whip was flipping a switch on my Repeating Crossbow to change it into a spike chain launcher which I quite liked.

    • @zwordsman
      @zwordsman 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thorn Whip is a great combo if your melee partner has Booming Blade. While Thornwhip does not proc attack of opportunities, it is stil movement. So any movement effects still occur---such as booming blade's movement damage, or dificult terrain DC vs falling or damage checks.

    • @neoman4426
      @neoman4426 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zwordsman Booming Blade actually doesn't trigger, that one is even more strict than an OpAttack. Opportunity Attacks can trigger when someone uses their own Movement, Action, or Reaction to move while Boom specifies *willingly* moving, so something like Dissonant Whispers triggers Opportunity (as it uses their Reaction) but not the boom (as magically altered mind state can't be considered willing). Forced positioning is still good with Booming Blade as you can put them into a position where they might need to choose to take the damage or be useless, or take other damage, or whatever, but it isn't automatic

    As a note on video presentation. It may be good to have some sort of written graphics. You had a few, but it would be useful to keep a "what we're talking about" graphic per each discussion topic. Simply because there is a bit of a back and forth, or random commentary on details.
    A good example is during the cantrip section, it wandered a tad a nd while I"m multi tasking and listening I had to reverse a bit because I couldn't tell if you moved on to the next cantrip--because the discussion was pretty broad and not specifcially on topic. (it wasn't off topic. But it wasn't immediately noticable).
    So keeping "topic of the moment" tags on screen in a corner would probalby help your video presentation.
    I am a corner case, but as I watch several of ya'lls videos in a row, about artificer mainly, I am noticing that its a reoccuring thing where I can't keep track of the exact topic due to the nature of a interpersonal conversation between the two of you driving the narritive. Its a good presentation method but it does result in some difficulty in following the narritive for some types of folks (like me~)

    I just noticed, Detect Magic says a visible aura around things you can see. So why would it need penetration against materials. If you can't see the item you can't see the glow. It doesn't matter if it is wrapped in burlap or in a lead box. Heck, one might even argue if you are blinded or in Darkness it won't work either.

    • @tse-machwashington3311
      @tse-machwashington3311 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know you posted this a year ago lol sooo...sorry but wanted to follow up. The penetration against materials has to do with the first clause of the spell (binary magical detection). Though you can only see auras around visible objects/creatures bearing magic, the spell allows detection of such effects through barriers up to the provided restricted limits. So basically the spell would let you know there is magic "somewhere" even though you can't see the aura. This would lead you to doing a further deeper investigation until you actually find the source (if possible). Some DMs also homebrew to allow the caster to exclude detection of already known objects (such as magical items/effects on your person or your party or even technically the spell itself) so that initial magical detection provides useful information rather than repetitiously detecting your +1 Dagger which would be useless.

    • @tse-machwashington3311
      @tse-machwashington3311 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Part of what determines good spell selection is your party composition. However having Cure Wounds and Identify are great spells since you have a nice backup heal option paired with a great utility spell. Since you will most likely serve as the party's arcane specialist, Identify is great to have especially considering it can be cast as a ritual and preserve spell slots. In addition, going Armorer means you will have access to a lot of always prepared offensive spells as well (by 3rd level), so having some utility/healing is smart. Also keep in mind that you can refresh your prepared spells from ALL the spells known on your list for a given level. So if you try out Cure Wounds/Identify to start and find it's not as useful as you'd like, you always have the option of experimenting with a different set of prepared spells the next day.

    My list is a little bit different from this one, but still, good vid. 👍
    For cantrips, in no specific order: Light, Mending, Firebolt, Shocking Grasp, Mage Hand, Guidance.
    For Level 1 Spells: Identify, Grease, Cure Wounds, Expeditious Retreat, Disguise Self.
    Rationale for Cantrips:
    Light is a necessity for those without Darkvision, such as Variant Humans and Warforged. An argument could be made for Goggles of Night in place of it via Replicate Magic Item, but it does come at the cost of an Artificer Infusion.
    Mending is not only thematic, but extremely useful in a variety of scenarios, from fixing stuff on the fly, to aiding in the item forging process.
    Guidance is helpful for all skill checks and saves, outside of combat. Since Artificers are expert toolsmiths by nature, this only serves to bolster them.
    Mage Hand gets a fair bit of mileage with Wizards, and Artificers are no different. The only ones who get more mileage out of it than Wizards and Artificers are either Arcane Tricksters (via Mage Hand Ledgermain), and PC's with the Telekinetic Feat.
    Firebolt/Shocking Grasp: No weapon? No problem. A nice thing too for Shocking Grasp, especially if you're an Armorer, is that the Lightning Launcher works off of lightning damage, just like Shocking Grasp does. Therefore, with something like Elemental Adept, a PC can bypass lightning resistance at higher levels (if desired).
    Rationale for Spells:
    Grease can initially knock a group of enemies prone on a failed save. Additionally, Firebolt + Grease = Limited AOE damage (depending on DM ruling).
    Identify can sub in as a pseudo-Detect Magic, in place of Detect Magic, especially when used as a Ritual spell. (The only downside is that there's no range to it, and it can't help you to find magic items.) Additionally, as an artificer infusion, Replicate Magic Item can create a Wand of Magic Detection, which negates the need for Detect Magic as a known spell.
    Cure Wounds is not only a no-brainer, but in a pinch, could end up causing you to become the healer's best friend in case they end up in a bad situation. (Never piss off the healer, right?)
    Expeditious Retreat is a solid defensive option, in case the PC gets surrounded by a small group of enemies. And that can happen at times.

    Ok after reading the spell fabricate again it as the perfect spell because of all the tool proficiency they get so you can just make stuff with a spell and 10 minutes (if I wanted could I just make a exactly statue of someone but around 20 feet tall. That would be 1,600 lbs of marble. Now what of I made it so I can blow up the bottom and crush a dragon with it) I want to know would you allow this? And that's just my first idea so I can only imagine what else can be done with this. Like if you've got the time you can just turn a cave in to a fortress with everything just being made of the stone you have around you. A city of people like this would be crazy

    • @eldarlundesgaard8770
      @eldarlundesgaard8770 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Working with marble (stone) you are limited to a medium objects that fit within a 5` cube, but I guess the dragon would still get a nasty bump on his head.
      The best part about this, if your DM allows it, is that it removes close to all manufacture-time. Want to make armour and have a lot of steel around? With the right proficiency you can make a full plate in 10 min (again; your DM might limit this because a crafty player breaks any economy in game.)
      Lets say you buy iron/steel ingots (1 sp/lbs) from a quarry. Go the full hog of say 60 lbs (thinking 5 is straps and padding) times 10 or something. You now spend 10 minutes of downtime every day, casting a single 4th level spell. Over 10 days you`ve now turned your investment of 60gp into full plate that even at half price would net you 7500 gold back.

    • @tse-machwashington3311
      @tse-machwashington3311 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think this could be homebrewed by a DM so that Catapult could work with such objects, just that technically whatever object is used takes damage as well, so at the very least by RAW whatever object you used would most likely be destroyed via the spell after a single use. Some DMs say that by RAW the spell just does it's damage regardless of what object is used. Some allow additional damage such as from an improvised weapon (1d4), while others may permit the full effect of both the spell and the object used or allow it to have an additional effect such as the thrown object causing an effect in a small aoe pattern upon successful contact with the initial target.

      @@LordPyro25 That is qutie true. but its a p retty big cost to do half your spell slots. If you're the alchemist and the group's healer? heck yeah wrot hit.
      but I've tended to like to use it like a lower level Mass Healing Word.
      Spell that overlap, only the newest works.
      So if you give them the base level for 5hp max up in the morning.
      If a situation occurs where multiple people are down, you can recast this spell. It overwrites the previous--functionally speaking your rmax HP won't change. But.
      The spell still gives you 5hp. Meaning those targets aren't at 0hp now.
      I haven't ever played high enough to get level 5 spells though. or that level f gameplay..
      but doing this at lower level have really saved a few situations
