No A/C Call With Issue I Almost Didn't Catch | HVAC

  • Had a service call today where the system was supposedly "doing fine" as the last technician had told the property management. went out and found a few issues but nothing too bad. System may just not be able to keep up but I will be better able to make that judgement after today and seeing how the unit operates.

    I definitely prefer your solo videos. Hearing your thought process and working though the problem is good and makes for good content.

    I'd say that air flow inside and out is the #1 problem we come across when a system is having trouble keeping up. I like the fact that you look for different problems and not just changing parts and add gas. As far as a unit not being level, it causes the compressor to wear unevenly shortening the life of the compressor. It's like running a car engine on a hill the oil doesn't lubricate properly.

    Love your videos have learned a lot. I'm just a DIY guy here learning, no special tools. But just recently learned a few days ago that airflow is key, way way more than I thought it was night and day difference for me. In my new to me 1990 house I have a dual system downstairs and upstairs. Down stairs unit is in my insulated garage and is newer 2017 unit great flow and temps out the registers measure 19-21 delta from inside temp. Upstairs air handler is in the attic and it struggles can barely get temps down to 78-80 during the day but at night can maintain 72-74. Also registers were low on flow and would measure like 70-74 degrees when its 78-80 upstairs. Called a tech and after he hooked up and checked everything he recommended replacement because refrigerant level was good and no leaks he could find and there was nothing physically wrong he could find (23 year old unit). Don't have the cash for that right now so started looking to learn and see what I could do. Was able to vacuum out my drain, then cleaned the ac condenser coil outside (quite dirty) This helped a little the register air temps dropped 1-2 degrees. Went in the attic to take a peak inside the air handler. My blower motor was horrendous dirty, more than this one you just cleaned. Removed and cleaned the blower. Which gave me access to see the evaporator coil it was completely clogged in a 1/4" layer of dust and hair. Vacuumed out as much as I could and cleaned with the no rinse spray and a bristle brush. Also the blower was on the black wire and moved it to blue medium based on your videos for slowing the speed. Holy shit what a difference, delta from inside to vents is now 17-18 degrees, air flow is up even on the lower speed and I can maintain 72-74 though out the day and the system no longer runs continuously. I had a almost $400 electric bill last month has been 90+ in VA. I'm looking forward to seeing next months bill! Your videos have helped me a ton, thank you!

    I bet the coil is dirty as we'll... if fan blower was that dirty... I am sure the coil is dirty as well... will help a lot on diagnosis ... great 🎉job though 💯 percent

      Could that play in to a part why the suction line was sweating crazily?

      Agreed that evaporator coil was dirty for sure.

    • @AB_HVAC
      @AB_HVAC  11 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      I don't doubt that but it can't be making too much of an issue. Texted the tenant about an hr ago (left a screwdriver in the furnace I had to go back and get) she said the unit kept her cool all night.

    • @mrautoguy8419
      @mrautoguy8419 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The system kept her cool at night but its different in the daytime. If the coil was dirty that should be cleaned too. 2 1/2 ton should be good for that house. 3 ton I believe is for 1500-1800 sq ft.

    • @AB_HVAC
      @AB_HVAC  10 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @mrautoguy8419 if she was having issues all day long I'd say there was probably airflow restriction on the coilm not saying it isn't dirty, but it's probably "ok" if it's handling low load conditions and keeping the home cool. I'd be inclined to look at the coil if she said it wasn't keeping up at night either. But that's just me

    I mean if the fan is that bad im sure the coil is worse😂. IMO quote for a evaporator coil removal and cleaning, also consider condenser cleaning and weight in of the charge along with a new dryer. That would be the best way to get the system back, without worry.

    Had a low pressure switch go on a condenser. Took a sec to figure out. Of course the supply house didn’t have one. Jumped out LPS and let it run. Be back to install tomorrow new LP switch. Nice vid. R u sure the primary and secondary drain ports were hooked up right? I’ve been to many drain issues to only find drain line hooked to the wrong port. Use a PT chart to get your superheat if your digital gear craps out. Put a PT app on your phone. I use danfoss apps. Blower wheels will pack up. The centrifugal fan will lose or can’t develope the required static pressure in the duct to push air out. Great job!

    • @AB_HVAC
      @AB_HVAC  12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I got the danfoss app, I let the fieldpiece probes tell me which SH I need, I just have to input outdoor temp. Good job on the low pressure switch diagnosis! And yeah I've had a few issues with the new ICP "V" style fan coils they recently started putting out. Where the primary and secondary ports would be switched around and it doesn't make too much sense why they did that...to me. But yeah it was flowing correctly. When I pushed up the fitting there was still some water in it but just the little bit that sometimes stays in there

    • @Mo4Honesty
      @Mo4Honesty 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      PT chart won't help you with SH if your temp probe craps out. The only way around that is to have an alternate way of reading the temp on the pipe.

    Hey bud, good morning! I saw HCFC 32 at inside near Evaporator coil sticker and you selected R410A at fieldpiece I believe that’s the reason you are away from delta T?

    • @AB_HVAC
      @AB_HVAC  10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The evap coil said whatever it wants, but the condenser was r410a. So it's a 410a compressor, I set my gauges to 410a

  • @larryl2459

    The owner killed that unit letting it get that dirty, that coil is in bad shape.

  • @shadenwells8926
    @shadenwells8926 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I am curious in the very beginning. The indoor coil Nameplate shows that the system is under 22 pressure. However, your outdoor gages are set to 410a and reading 410 pressures?

    • @AB_HVAC
      @AB_HVAC  3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Because the outdoor coil and compressor are R410a and someone is using a R22 evap coil retrofitted fitted with an R410a piston. I believe most of the R22 evap coils were able to run 410a pressures well as long as you changed the piston. It's not uncommon

    Love your videos bro and how you listen to your customers before telling them what you think it is…. Why not check the metering device though bro? I notice a lot of guys on TH-cam guess the metering device too without actually verifying lol. Not that hard to open up the case door or even pop a hole in the duct and use a camera to verify. Just a thought not trying to be critical of your work

    • @AB_HVAC
      @AB_HVAC  12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Nah I respect the comment man I get it. I think I'm just used to seeing R22 coils (especially on split gas systems) be pistons. I should've done something to check (I don't have one of those inspection cameras) but if it ain't 2008 or up AND it's R22 I'm automatically assuming piston. Just a bad habit.
