I think that the lunches in Breakfast Club is not precisely the way the are, but the way they are percieved by the adults on their life, they dont pack their lunch themselves. Andrew has a protein-packed lunch because he is expected to become this great athlete, Bryan has a lunch which reflects perfectly how pressured he is, the perfectly balanced lunch. Bender has nothing cause no-one cares about him. The whole point of the movie is to be who you are, not who someone else thinks you are.
Exactly why they do it this way the characters and their lunches are some if the first things you see almost forcing them into stereotypes but they eventually get to know each other they start showing their true selves they go from point a to b and we get to see the path they take the more open they become
I wouldn't say nobody cares about Bender; his parents are abusive and neglectful and they're probably overworked and emotional/psychological wrecks. Plus, he looks and acts grown, so they probably assume he's got the food thing handled. I doubt he complains much to his abused mother that she didn't pack him a lunch. He probably wakes up two minutes before he leaves the house.
@@Liuhuayue Her lunch was originally a normal sandwich imposed on her. She disliked the bologna. So she took it upon herself to make a non-standard sandwich, more to her liking.
I know! I was looking for a comment about it! It definitely represents her independence at such a young age and how she only has herself to deal with the difficulties of adulthood. Well, Landa orders strudel, a traditionally German dessert, at a restaurant in France. So, this points to why he emphasizes it as being "not so terrible" because for him it's not truly German strudel. In the overarching story, it is out of place as the Nazis are in France. They shouldn't be there. This is also reemphasized in the scene later on when they smoke the German, not French cigarettes. It's a power play. He's showing how Germany is dominant over France by forcing her to eat a German dessert and use German cigarettes. He's the one with the power. Another thing is that he orders espresso for himself and milk for Shoshanna. This adds tension because where did Shoshanna's family all die by Landa's hands? A dairy farm. This implies that Landa may know who she is and is using it to scare her. Milk may also hold connotations of childhood and paternalism. Parents often tell their children to drink milk and they make them drink it at dinner. Here Landa orders her milk, a child like drink while he orders the strong adult espresso for himself. He is showing himself as superior not only in ordering for her and making her try it but in also what he chooses for her to physically intake. The added cream also reasserts the dairy element but also shows indulgence. He makes them both wait for the cream. There's probably more to it but I haven't really thought about the cream as much. It is also important to note the way they eat. Shoshanna tries to take her one bite as soon as possible in order to get it over with. She doesn't want to be there, she is clearly just indulging Landa so she won't anger him and have him find out about her. Landa chomps on that strudel. He talks with his mouth full and we hear the clanking of his silverware. The guy is in control and completely at ease since it is a "casual" conversation they are having. It also shows how he may appear to have manners by the way he addresses people and struts about but he eats rudely. He also puts his cigarette into the strudel. The "real" German cigarette squashes and ruins the "no so terrible" German "pretending"strudel. It also shows how wasteful Landa is. While people are dying this guy eats a strudel then wastes it with his cigarette. His polite persona is just hiding his ruthless nature which Shoshanna is already aware of. Sorry for the length. I may be completely wrong or missing some aspects of the scene but eh. . . It's one helluva scene.
@@jackierosas9593 Great comment, I agree with everything you said. Perhaps the cream and the fact that Landa tells Shoshanna to wait for it is just another symbol to show his power. As you said, she doesn't want to be there, she would quickly eat her strudel and then go away, and it's pretty clear, so somehow Landa perceives it and he makes her stay and wait longer. It's also another "disguised" obligation: he's slightly suggesting that she cannot decide on her own when to start eating, she has to wait for him and his choices. And when they finally can eat and he's had his cream, he wastes the whole strudel putting his cigarette on it. He's showing off his power and his carelessness for whatever is "below" him, people or just, symbolically, a French restaurant strudel. He wants to make clear that he's in control, that he has the upper hand, and others can only adjust to his will. However, it's definitely a great scene. One of my favourites.
Chiara Lupi I agree with you on the cream! It is such a great scene. I love the way Tarantino films food. The Big Kahuna burger and milkshake scenes in Pulp Fiction, the beer and white cake in Django, and the strudel scene make me so hungry. It’s also interesting the way he often sets up his characters in a kitchen or in a restaurant/diner.
He wants to know (or wants her to know) that she is Jewish. As far as my knowledge you can't eat bacon and milky products at the same time if you're a jew.
Jesse in Breaking Bad really never becomes "desensitized". Throughout the show, he puts on a tough exterior but we know that he is much more of an empath than Walter is. Walter's persona changes after having been involved in the drug business for a while and he becomes more and more apathetic. Jesse, on the other hand, deals with the heavy burden of all his trauma. In the eating scene shown, he's not desensitized, but he's attempting to ignore or cope with what had just happened and act as if everything is alright.
Yes if anything have a full heavy meal is providing the distraction and cope he needs to not deal with it, whilst Walter is already dealing with it and suffering, Jesse is delaying dealing with it mentally himself.

There is an old black and white film called Babette's Feast which is absolutely stunning. Food is used in every aspect of this film from conveying manners, religion, routine to culture, love and art. The way characters view and interact with food both familiar and foreign is just plain beautiful.
that perfectly fits in with Tony's chaotic energy though. not that he eats blueberries while going on a mission but just that he is eating that only bc Robert doesnt care about the rule.
I read somewhere that in the movie he consistently offers the food as a source of positive reinforcement every time a character agrees with him or says something clever.. Also blueberries are notoriously healing brain food.. There is actually a Ted talk on it.. Maybe Tony stark is just worrying about the neural stress on banners pathways during transformation? Because that's the person he offers it to the most Also he wanted to eat irl
I never thought of the significance of food in films. Everyone keeps mentioning the infamous Capolas use of the orange in The Godfather but that’s it. Very interesting! Now I don’t have to worry about starving any actors !
Grown characters - especially men - drinking milk used to be a bad guy thing in my eyes, because of Clockwork Orange and Inglorious basterds. But then I remembered Leon the professional, which seems to be there to symbolize Leons simple state of mind. So, what does a glass of milk symbolize? A Childlike state, or somebody who knows that whatever they do, it won't be of any consequence to them because they have the power? Or maybe both depending on the character?
Maybe it symbolizes thier fucked up mentality, if you wanna make something brave or cruel... etc... You drink alcohol to give you an edge, but these ppl are so bad ass so harsh, they don't need alcohol/stimulants to achieve thier cruel agenda
@@potmki6601 Milk is only good for your bones when you're a child though, after that it's superfluous so I think their idea of a childlike state is appropriate
I think it depends on who the character is, I play a video game where they call people “milk drinkers” to call them weak, however I, an athlete drink milk all the time and I am not weak, so it depends on what the character is
Man, what a great video. I personally love the food preparing scenes in the series Hannibal and I could never really articulate why. Plus, the video was short and in nowadays you rarely find a video, which is under 10 minutes long lol, thanks for having literally every sentence in this video being insightful and interesting rather than just there to fill some time. 👍
Something else I noticed about Hannibal when it comes to the food is how it’s presented. Hannibal’s dishes are always these elaborate creations; his way of elevating those he considers inferior to something of worth. The lighting is also usually cold, like they’re in a surgery room rather than a dinner table. The one time that it’s lit warmly that I can recall is the last scene with Bedelia and her leg, which may be indicative of Hannibal now truly having dinner to share with someone (Will) instead of putting on a show. Cordell tries to be fancy with the presentation of his meals, but they are never as elaborate as Hannibal’s. He’s Mason’s poor man’s version of Hannibal. The food not prepared by those two - the papardelle from Pazzi’s wife and Reba’s pie - are more simple and have warmer lighting, as it’s food simply being shared with another.
Judd’s lack of a lunch reveals his desire to be cared for while trying to cover it up by making fun of the others lunch. He feels neglected and unwanted.
I've came across many videos about how color theory, costume and production design or even lighting informs a character, but never about food! Thanks ❤️
I really like the Goodfellas food stuff. All of it. It’s important to the story, every time, from the wooing of the main couple to the post murder play at being “normal,” the cruelty at the bars, the corruption in prison to the furtive anxiety in the diner, it’s always enhancing or propelling the plot. As an editor, it is what I point to for my clients if they want examples of what to do, rather than what they should avoid.
In Robin of Sherwood (a British show from the 80s, the first to have a saracen as part of Robin's team), although Nasir is as loyal to Robin as the rest of the group, he never is and never will be completely English. He holds on to little pieces of his faith and culture, so often in scenes where characters are having a feast to honor something, Nasir can be seen refusing pork or alcoholic drinks, often he's sitting quietly away from the rest of them, and it doesn't carry that much symbolic meaning, but it's interesting little piece of world and character building
Guys you're misunderstanding the video. Is not always the choice and the meaning behind, sometimes is about the way the character eats, or maybe the way the character makes his meal. ✌ there are many ways to communicate through food.
Here is another famous one. In Iron Man. The first thing Tony Stark asks for after coming home from the terrorists prison is a fast food hamburger. It is clearly symbolic of the simple pleasures that he was deprived from in that hole and makes it even more clear how much he suffered. It also shows that despite being a billionaire playboy genius inventor, he is still a person like you and me. After all a man who has tasted the best the world has to offer, desires a common mans carvings.
For as long as I can remember, I've been very obsessed with what other people eat. What they cook for themselves, and how they order at a restaurant. It really does say a lot. All the out-of-the-box thinkers stand out with what they eat, and don't like to eat.
3 year old comment but, me too! I love those Harper Bazaar what I eat videos. I find it so interesting that everyone has different favorites and eating habits.
This video was really educational to me. I have an ambition to become a filmmaker and a director that I want to make some of my films for my TH-cam and I am glad this was in my recommended.
One of the best times where food was used to illustrate what was happening dramatically on screen and between the two specific characters was the strudel scene in Inglorious Basterds it’s by far my favorite food scene in a movie
4:12 Uh oh. I do that usually. 😅 I have to eat very slowly, so I do that if I can to avoid it getting soggy. Or I take a short glass and put only a few dozen in the milk at a time. It takes forever so it’s kind of a treat for me. I also have to be careful because it can really hurt my mouth if I’m not. My brain has miswired pain detection because of a combo of hereditary illness and an injury, so things that may be irritating or uncomfortable for most people are interpreted as pain, so it’s kind of tricky to do most things. Having cereal is just one of them. But it’s really satisfying when I can manage it.
In the movie "We need to talk about Kevin", there were ample scenes of food to portray Kevin's sadistic behavior. 1. He would mostly eat a bread with some red jam. But one day he sort of devoured a whole chicken before going out for dinner with his mother. And at the dinner table, instead of eating he kept making tiny balls of bread crumbs while talking to his mother. 2. He was shown peeling a leechi sadistically, and then enjoyed crushing the tiny fruit in between his teeth. This scene was just after the scene when his sister had her left eye burnt. Creepy as hell, it was disturbing to witness that. 3. The day he massacred his school, that morning he was playing with his cereals. He was shown crushing every single piece of cereal as their parents were discussing divorce, and his 17th birthday.
I love how Rose in Get Out eats her “cereal” separated. The milk representing whites and the Froot Loops symbolizing colored people. She wants them segregated.
Well the first food scene that came into my mind when you mentioned it was the peas from secretary. I doubt there's any hidden depth behind the peas. To me it could have just as easily be any other very small food that's eaten in big quantities in one go. So no nuts, no candy, but e.g. rice or beans would be just as good as the peas
I love that Hannibal makes Will scrambled eggs with _unidentified meat_ in the series Hannibal. It sets up the caring approach Hannibal has to Will as his patient, and as someone who treats Will as somewhere between a love interest and an experiment. The carefully chosen 'protein scramble' rather than just eggs shows that he's precise about what he's doing with Will's body. It's simultaneously a caring domestic interaction, and a cold scientific experiment.
He’s meticulous and methodical. He doesn’t want something that is plain. The preparation of his food is a parallel with how he kills his food. It also fits in with that theme of desensitization mentioned in the video since he sees it as another meal rather than the limbs of a human being. Idk if u actually wanted an answer but this was in my head so 🤷🏻♂️
That he has some serious anger issues. Dude literally is so filled with hatred for other human beings that them being rude has a salty taste that can be described as 'free range rude'. Revenge to Hannibal is a palatable taste.
Remember that lunch scene from Jurassic Park? How they all just witnessed how the raptors are fed, and Laura Dern is served this big old plate of meat, and she just stares at it...? X) Yeah. Food helps get points across in stories. Edit: Oh my goodness, I just remembered the ice cream scene as well from the same movie. Ice cream usually symbolizes innocence and childhood. It's also a comfort food, which people have to make themselves feel better. Which is what Dr. Hammond is eating, when all the dinosaurs are loose, and the electric fences aren't working. He eats it while he reminisces about his flea circus, feeling nostalgic for a childhood dream he wanted to make real for people. Laura Dern also has some, probably just in an attempt to feel better as well. Oh man... I also just remembered. The fucking JELLO scene as well. You can just imagine why they wanted Ariana Richards to eat that. Jello's dominant quality is that it shakes. And the audience will ask themselves... why is it shaking...? Ahhh, I love that movie. :)
I saw good fellas in highschool, I'm 32 now and I always cut my garlic like that when I make pasta dishes. Another good movie that centres around food is Any Lee's "Eat drink man woman"
And one of the most important symbolism relating to food. Who you eat with/ don’t. In stories, eating is a highly personally act. Two characters have a good meal together? They’re that much closer. A character who refuses to eat with other characters? That boy is up to something.
Actually saw an article about psychopaths and it got on the subject of food. Apparently, most psychopaths eat very delicately and slower. And also etiquette.
In Ocean's Eleven; Brad Pitt's character is eating every time we see him. What does that say about the character? I really need to know, because that is my favourite character in that movie.
Nicole Sakwe I’d say confident and relaxed. Very suave. I mean if you’re eating it shows you’re relaxed and not bothered about anything else. So also arrogant
This reminds me of Tim and Eric talking about food in the Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!commentary. They said that they show really basic kids menu foods like spaghetti, pizza, nuggets and steak because the show is supposed to be from a child’s viewpoint since Tim and Eric (the characters) are basically children.
I can't choose Ghibli as a fav food scene cause I'd choose every single one, so for sure otherwise I'd use the establishing kitchen shot from Ratatouille. There's something INCREDIBLE about watching the salmon being cooked, or watching the soup come to life.
Reminds me of the character called Sylar from Heroes, who keep describing his impulse to murder people as a 'hunger'...and as such, is shown eating something in every other scene he's in.

Now I don’t have to worry about starving any actors !
th-cam.com/video/2uK9cx3M9_w/w-d-xo.html Another great video focusing on food (or cooking rather) in films if you'd like to see more. Enjoy.
The oranges in the godfather were actually unintentional which makes that so funny
If you think about it, nobody's ACTUALLY while filming, so the food has to convey some alternative meaning,
I love thoughtful videos like this. They help me break down and build stories.
Reads title
Me an intelectual: it means they are hungry
Edit: wow thank u for the 900 likes :)
Oh, honey.
exactly! hungry for self realization and development!
The typo makes this even funnier
Apples=assholes?
Two favourite food scenes
Ratatouille: the strawberry and cheese scene
Good burger: every scene
Any scene with food in a Hayao Miyazaki film.
ApexCactus the ponyo scene with the ramen 👌🏼
Spirited Away.
Milk is good for your bones. I think maybe conservative characters? In a good way
th-cam.com/video/iKDtmV5xSv0/w-d-xo.html
Fried Green Tomatoes, the detective eating the BBQ. Priceless.
That chocolate cake in Matilda tho!!
I see you putting in this hard work man, love it
*the pizza is being aggressive*
Jammy nut, Ron
Bruh Christopher Waltz eating the strudel in Inglorious Bastards is everything.
Blue is the warmest color also uses food to represent the socioeconomic and psychological differences between families and mai characters...
Plus they always eat with their mouths open xD
Every food party with Kevin in Home Alone. Always makes me feel free. 😆
I've came across many videos about how color theory, costume and production design or even lighting informs a character, but never about food! Thanks ❤️
I particularly love Fisk's omelette scene at the start of daredevil season 3 which shows perfectly where he is and where he wants to be
I really like the Goodfellas food stuff.
My favourite food scene is the potato chip scene in death note
I just want to say shout out every frame a painting cause he’s the reason why a shit load of these Vedic essays are all over the TH-cam community
After all a man who has tasted the best the world has to offer, desires a common mans carvings.
i have seen pulp fiction maybe 100+ times but still jules taking a bite of the burger makes me extremely hungry
Anything NBC Hannibal eats is a statement xD
For as long as I can remember, I've been very obsessed with what other people eat.
What they cook for themselves, and how they order at a restaurant.
It really does say a lot.
All the out-of-the-box thinkers stand out with what they eat, and don't like to eat.
3 year old comment but, me too! I love those Harper Bazaar what I eat videos. I find it so interesting that everyone has different favorites and eating habits.
This video was really educational to me. I have an ambition to become a filmmaker and a director that I want to make some of my films for my TH-cam and I am glad this was in my recommended.
One of the best times where food was used to illustrate what was happening dramatically on screen and between the two specific characters was the strudel scene in Inglorious Basterds it’s by far my favorite food scene in a movie
that get out one got me good
Once Upon A Time In America - Scene With A Cake
Even those fucking delicious looking meals in Hannibal?
Nice consideration for making the food scene.. thanks 👍
This was so interesting. I love watching the science/reasoning behind movies and films
Isabel Palomino Really? Well that’s boring.
That’s not even a little true....
I think they just made her eat it like that to show she’s weird..?
I thought it was just cause she was a whole ass freak
@Dear Dream she want dat bbc
Super interesting video! Theres so many aspects of film I've always just glossed over, it's crazy how much thought goes into making a movie
Wow such a good analysis!! Enjoyed
Finally someone makes a video about food and movies love both
I love that Hannibal makes Will scrambled eggs with _unidentified meat_ in the series Hannibal.
Iron man, Hannibal, Finnick from Hunger games and Ron Weasley come to mind
hannibal has the best food scenes hands down
Gosh, I love when Stuntman Mike eats nachos, I think it's really satisfying how he enjoys the dish, but I don't know if it means something more
I LOOOOVE THIS CHANNEL! thank you for these cool videos
Well, what about Hannibal? What can you tell about him by the food he eats?
I hope it does not mean that he is cannibal
He’s meticulous and methodical. He doesn’t want something that is plain. The preparation of his food is a parallel with how he kills his food. It also fits in with that theme of desensitization mentioned in the video since he sees it as another meal rather than the limbs of a human being.
Idk if u actually wanted an answer but this was in my head so 🤷🏻♂️
@@007TrickShotz Also he believes he's superior to everyone else.
Yeah.
Let's not forget about the peach scene in call me by your name😏🍑
I was thinking of that
I like to think that you're talking about the original, because Oliver eats the peach afterwards.
I love how your vids are short and sweet.
Loved the Breakfast Club analysis.
This is something really good stuff.
The pie scene in American Pie
Just wonder how easily you explain deep things... Appreciate!👍
Again with the amazing stuff, congrats
I never really thought of this, great video!
Evil character ll drink milk
It's about our wild nature.
Milk is like blondes, either innocence or evil
In a clockwork Orange, the drugged milk is used to symbolize corrupted innocence/youth
Exactly! I was looking for this. I have seen it in so many movies already where the bad guy drinks milk.
Tony Soprano, stress-eating, is the best thing ever..
Actually saw an article about psychopaths and it got on the subject of food. Apparently, most psychopaths eat very delicately and slower. And also etiquette.
The strudel scene from Inglourious Basterds is what's iconic for me, second to the cheeseburger scene of Pulp Fiction
Not just Ocean's Eleven, Pitt loves to eat in his movies.
I love the food scene in Howl's moving castle, it looks soo good
That thing about the egg struck me as something that I should pay attention to but didn't know why until now.
This was really insightful and all but I couldn’t stop thinking about a cooked breakfast the entire time
The most iconic eating scene for me is in Bakemonogatari series. It's so well explained, well executed that it's just pure gold!
Really well made video, great job and thanks!
The lychee in We need to talk about Kevin, oh my. It's so obvious yet so effective.
Man please keep making videos! Ur genious!
The egg from Murder on the Orient Express is my favorite food scene.
Always and forever, the noodle scene with Harrison Ford in Blade Runner will be my favourite.
It was not a good idea to watch this while I'm hungry
I can't choose Ghibli as a fav food scene cause I'd choose every single one, so for sure otherwise I'd use the establishing kitchen shot from Ratatouille. There's something INCREDIBLE about watching the salmon being cooked, or watching the soup come to life.
Reminds me of the character called Sylar from Heroes, who keep describing his impulse to murder people as a 'hunger'...and as such, is shown eating something in every other scene he's in.
My favourite food scene is from human centipede........
im not taking this back
