Regarding your Dad's story.... Age 66 here. I had stopped listening to music entirely for over 30 years because we were being presented with nothing but junk on the airwaves, in my humble opinion. Until I discovered Nightwish in 2008. Since then, same story as your father's! I feel like a teenager again! //// On a lighter note, there are two obligatory jokes (obligatory in that I have to tell them every time!) that go with this song...one for the official vid and one for Tampere. 1. (I guess it's a Chuck Norris type of joke) "Nightwish doesn't sit around the campfire. The campfire sits around Nightwish!" and 2. "If you try really hard you might one day be cool enough to have a long Viking braided beard. And if you try even harder you might one day be cool enough to have that beard AND be bass player for the greatest metal band in the world. But no matter how hard you try you will NEVER be cool enough to have that beard, be that bass player, AND have Floor Jansen as your BACKUP singer!"
Heh, my favorite comment I read on the original video was, "In Soviet Russia, campfire sits around you!" And yeah, as a singing bass player myself, Marko is one of my heroes, and I'm jealous of him. We're only 4 months apart in age (he's the older of us), but I seem to be completely incapable of growing a proper beard, and started losing my hair a couple decades ago. When I was 30 I had gotten my hair to shoulder length, but then a friend took a photo of me from behind. And in that photo, there was this big bald spot in the middle of all that thick, long hair. I decided, "That just looks stupid" and cut it all off.
@@rikosborne1212 BWAHAHA on the "Soviet Russia" joke and BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! on the bald spot joke! That's EXACTLY what happened to me! I was a "hippie" of the 60's with long hair. Then at the ripe old age of 29 in 1983, I asked my neighbor to help me lift a big double picture window into the rough opening on my house I was building. My wife took our picture from behind. It was an old chemical emulsion film camera (because I'm a dinosaur), so I didn't get the film developed for over a year. When I finally saw it, I was, like, oh yeah I remember this. There's Tim (my neighbor). Who the f*** is this guy? I thought I helped him that day??? And that wasn't a joke at the time! I seriously did no recognize me with the big shiny pink monk's cap of bare skin. Same as you said, that was it! Nowadays I shave it all with blade and Barbasol foam! LOL!
My mum is 75. The rockiest she got was Rod Stewart. Sowed her Ghost Love Score and she's now both part of the Nightwish army and a sewing group where they share music. There are now a load of little metal grannies out there stitching away.
Hey Chris, what do you think about Greta Van Fleet? If you don't know about them, they are a really good young rock band with a lead singer that sounds like Robert Plant, as well as a great lead guitarist and drummer. I'm around 40 years old, and I think I enjoyed their show more than any other...except maybe the Tragically Hip back in the day.
that is why it is created to make people feel something...this live version just makes me feel so happy as it shows the chemistry of the band...from Marco knowing his band mates will come in on time to Floors smile as Marco is celebrated by the crowd.
If I remember correctly, Marco actually wrote the melody for this song. The story is, in a nutshell, that Tuomas heard Marco playing it backstage or something at some point and liked it, and when he asked about it Marco said it was just something he had been writing but that wouldn't really work for his band Tarot, and Tuomas was like "We could do it with Nightwish if you want", so Marco finished writing the music, and Tuomas wrote the lyrics, and the rest is history.
It's interesting because Marco also wrote the music for "The Crow, the Owl, and the Dove". I think it was Tuomas who said the most metal person in the band wrote the softest song on the album.
If you want to see some more Marko singing, check out Nightwish's cover of Pink Floyd's High Hopes. Marko absolutely kills it on vocals & is easily the best Pink Floyd cover to date from anyone.
As a long time Pink Floyd fan, I have to say, I think Nightwish did a fantastic job with High Hopes. It is extremely rare for me to like any Pink Floyd cover, but this one is awesome.
Real men aren't insecure about their emotions. Nightwish makes me fucking tear up all the time, and I'm 35. Nothing makes me feel the way music does, and if you're anything like me I know exactly what you feel and why. That 'makes me feel home' comment is not lost on me brother. Keep on keepin on!
Just shows that you're an all rounded human being. Not having this immature idea of what is means to be a "man"..... Just a "Fun Fact" here, every ones cell's seem to have memory, your history is literally in your genes. So if you happen to have Celtic or European roots, you might feel at home with anything from that culture. It also shows in having a love or hate relationship with liquorice xD. People with Scandinavian or Dutch DNA are more likely to love it. I especially Love the salty ones like Salmiak. The stronger the better. xD.
@@yvonnecampbell7036 Licorice. The more a staple in Germany the further north you get...up here, we are eating it by the handful while you can chase away any given Bavarian or Swabian with it :D
Leish, I'm nearly 65 and it still gets me, so hopefully you're in for another 30 years at least of it! I'm sure you don't mind that! Keep on keepin' on - my new catch phrase, I think. Cheers :)
Thank You again Tank! Story behind the song! (I just translated this to English) (C) Tuomas Holopainen: " I would have been willing to pick this up from the Dark Passion Play album as a single, if the singer hadn’t just changed( Tarja ----> Anette 2006). A Celtic song that Marko played a couple of years before, in the back room. Saying it would properly not sit for his band, Tarot. It flashed through my mind, this song is about a lighthouse keeper by the way. So Marko finished the song, and I did the words. Little Elegia, a poetic song, about a lone lighthouse keeper. And no symbolism, for once, direct storytelling. This song is what we can play in gigs acoustically ”.
@@juanitooctavio9023 There's a point about those words. Klaatu's song itself, reminds me, Queens Bohemian Rapsody, in many places and the Band itself looks like Motorhead 😀
Oh jeez, Poet breaks *everyone*. This is a phenomenal primer for THAT emotional beast of a song. If you're not crying by the end, you're not listening.
@@Pitchblackbones When I first listened without contexted part 2 and 4 hit me over the head. after a few listens and some context 3 and 5 hit me like a truck it is really hard not to cry.
@@brianhalligan9268 absolutely! And the impact changes based on your mood. It's *always* an emotional song, but whichever emotion gets ramped up *really* depends on your headspace when you go into it.
I'm a year older than your dad. Although I've been a Nightwish fan since about 2002, I'm one of those who fell away when Tarja left, so I didn't hear Poet until about a year ago, when I watched Floor sing it at Wembley. I was watching in the living room on my laptop with headphones in. I confess here that I had to stop and leave the room to compose myself. I literally bawled like a baby that first time and had difficulty breathing for several listens afterwards. It still makes me tear up, even now. The Islander is another one that gets me every time. One thing I do love about the live version is the look on Marko's face as he _knows_ without looking that the band are there behind him, ready. That, and Floor's look of utter joy as he walks back at the end.
I was a teenager when open letter happened and I took it pretty hard then... felt almost like loosing a memeber of the family... I'm glad I continued listening to them through the hard times :) so people never gave them another chance, which is sad, even more so having in mind how great the next albums were...
same here man. i am in my 40s now and i was one of the people who fell away when tarja left. there where many who told me i have to listen to nightwish again, but i was sure it would never be the same for me again. and that much was true. it wasnt the same for me. it was something new and it got me even more and at an more complex angle then before. i wouldnt call me a fan, (because i am a very picky music listener and there is always something i can find in any genre for me) but it feels like its getting there.
Most hard Nightwish fans were really toxic with Anette at that time, which is kinda sad because both albums are masterpieces, specially "Imaginaerum". I think she has a voice that fit perfectly for the more folk-ish sound Tuomas was aiming towards. It's less operatic and more jazzy, and even if Floor is unparalleled on range, power and control, Anette's departure from the band was for me a heartfelt loss. As for the emotional load of these songs, there's a couple of Nightwish songs that make me cry EVERY TIME I heard them, such as "The crow, the owl and the dove" (beautiful folky tune from Imaginaerum) and "The Greatest Show on Earth"... and well, almost all of their latest album.
It's kinda sad and funny at the same time. For me at least, since I became a fan around Dark Passion Play and I've never had this "Anette sucks" phase. Now that I'm older and I've listened them long time, I can say that Anette was the weakest of the trio, but then again... When competitors are Tarja Turunen and Floor Jansen, being last isn't a shame.
I understand how you feel Tank.. I'm going on 54 years old, been stuck in American classic rock, heavy metal, alternative music, and we have had MANY wonderful artists to bring out emotions such as, Alice and Chains, Rush, A perfect circle, ect..... but NONE have effected me as much, on a regular basis, as the songs of Nightwish.. Like you, some of it has to do with that hint of folk sound, the powerful drumlines, the orchestration of symphonic sounds, and the beautiful voices of Floor & Marco. They've absolutely revived my inner music love.
Well,I am soon 64 and same here, there was time when Led Zeppelin;CCR,Deep Purple and many others were on my daily play lists (Sure I will still enjoy these now and then) but now as an older, I want more....Meaning that even small details are important now and specially in live-performances. Nightwish offers great and power full melodies, emotional lyrics and then those small things: Seeing how band plays together with fun, seeing that joy of playing and singing,...all also small details on shows and how band is interactive with crowd and vs. When my time comes(Hope not too fast), I have choose "Islander" for song to play in my funeral. As an retired merchant navy officer, it will be my song when leaving this world.
@@TTK2013 that'd be a very fitting song since you were a naval/ merchant mariner. I can see where that hits home with you. And I totally agree with your comment for attention to detail, crowd interaction, and just not being the same song/ sound, even though you know it's nightwish immediately when you hear them. Live long, and prosper my friend. And no I'm not a trekkie😆😆🖖
I agree. It’s something primal. It’s as if it activates something deep down in my DNA 🧬. Nightwish is a unicorn in music. It transcends the genre it generally sits in and pushes boundaries of creative expression. What a joy to experience.
Charles Hornbeak I find that some if The Pineapple Thief, Porcupine Tree And Marillion effect me that way.....beautiful, lush orchestrations with melody...often in minor key....Silent Lucidity by Queensryche is another example. And yes, the folk music of Ireland, Wales, Scotland....the Norse countries.....and that of Bulgaria as well.....it’s got to be in our genes....they say that such “memories” can be passed down through the generations, and I believe that. How else to explain my tears when I hear the pipes?
Marko got you. And a real man doesn't have to hide his tears. And the Nightwish Army only likes to see people being moved by their favorite band. And I usually cry along when that happens. Or at least tear up. lol. Floor Jansen at the tv show Beste Zangers kept making everyone cry in the studio. I'd recommend 'Winner' or 'About Love I Don't Know a Thing'. On the Beste Zangers show she sings songs from/for the other artists that were on the season. Not a competition. And they sing songs that are not the genre they are used singing in.
And, here are the links: - About Beste Zangers: There's a Dutch TV show called Beste Zangers. They collect a bunch of well-known Dutch singers and put them together and let them sing for each other. Some years it's OK, some years not. 2019 they invited Floor (who is Dutch, even though she sings in the Finnish band Nightwish and lives in Sweden) and the show was a super-success and Floor suddenly became famous in Netherlands (Dutch radio NEVER plays metal, so she wasn't known there before). These links will give you an insight in the show and the first part shows the first time the other mainstream singers met Floor, our Metal Queen. It's good, it's hilarious and it's fascinating. Awesome, legit reaction. I am in my late 40's, and generally speaking, am a very unemotional, stoic person. This song, along with several other Nightwish songs, turn on the waterworks each & every time. I can't explain it, but there it is. Thumbs up, dude.
I must agree, Nightwish really hits in the right spots with some of their songs. The Poet and the Pendulum is another one of those, especially when you're familiar with the backstory and the lyrics. That middle part with the boy... man...
Anette has the fate of being stuck between 2 goddesses, so you don't always hear reactors do her stuff, which is a shame, cause she's got a nice voice. It's just not a deep dark opera, which, they were wanting to move away from that, and that was a lot of the drama. Many fans really liked her, but a lot didn't. There was her getting sick, just a whole bunch of stuff. Anyways, check her out on Scaretale sometime soon. It's a really good halloween song; Meadows of Heaven ( lot like this vibe, but with a nice surprise at the end.) or her independent project The Dark Element I subbed :)
Yeah, Annette gets a lot of crap because she didn't sound like Tarya. She couldn't really handle the Tarya era songs live, but I've heard some pretty interesting stripped down versions of the songs live from her. The songs that was written for her voice are pretty good though. Just not really what we wanted. I drifted away in the Annette years but have come back after discovering Floor.
@@gorgarath well, those songs weren't written for ultra bright. it would be like one of our older country ladies trying to do it. They could if they worked at it, but it's not gonna be conducive to a night after night thing for them. I bet her with an acoustic version of some of them would sound really great. I've always been curious about a duet with her and Sharon or Elize
If you search, there's some live versions of Nemo at least that are stripped down and rather interesting. (I was specifically looking for Nemo which is how I know these versions exist.)
I bonded with my dad over nightwish on a road trip. He was driving, we listened to phantom of the operah and he got goosebumps everywhere and almost had to stop the car. The rest of the trip we analyzed all the harmonies in my favourite songs of them. I often think back to these hours with him. So yeah. Nightwish is a total win on every level.
If that isn't all the cred *ever* needed: "Floor Jansen does my backing vocals." (Edit) I've watched this reaction at least 10 times over the last couple days. It's rapidly become one of my favorites! Tank, don't ever apologize for getting emotional at music... that's the whole point.
@TankTheTech That is THE best reaction you've done to date. Thank you for being willing to share with everyone that way, and thanks for allowing all of us to share it with you. Freakin Awesome. Just ... Awesome.
One of the things Annette did extremely well are these folky songs. If you want to hear a Marco/Annette duet you should listen to The Crow, The Owl and The Dove. If you want to hear just Annette, Turn Loose The Mermaids is very beautiful. I’m not sure if there are live vids of those with Annette, but the studios are great anyways.
The softer songs with Marco were definitely where Annette shown. I feel like her and Marco were more evenly matched or their vocals just worked a little better together. People like to talk shit about Annette because she wasn't the opera singer of Nightwish, but I think some of their best songs came from her.
@@vsGoliath96 Annette was, in my mind, a great studio singer. The live recordings I saw (e.g. Wacken) sounded more like a Nightwish cover band - and not a great one at that. But I am sure her style has its own fans, I am just not one of those
I completely agree. While i love and absolutely adore how Floor does some of these songs, the studio version of Anette singing "squealing PIGS!" in Scaretale is still completely unmatched. The Crow, the Owl and the Dove is absolutely beautiful too and Turn Loose the Mermaids *NEVER* failed to make me cry to this day.
All generations love Nightwish! My parents (both born in 1953) discovered Nightwish in early 2000's through me and fell in love immediately, and it has been their favorite band since. Once we even went together in 2 cars to a 1000km distant concert! Why two cars? Because there was also my friend with us who introduced me to Nightwish, my sister, and then my 5 years old niece, sister's daughter :) They almost stopped her from entering the arena cause she was so young, but we begged, explained we traveled from so far away, and they let her in :)
I love this band! I'm 65 years old and this band makes me so emotional. I just love everyone's part and how they highlight everyones talents,. Marco is awesome!!
Of all the reactions to the live version of Islander, this has to be my favorite. I love the gear breakdown/history, the appreciation of talent, and appreciation of the genre being presented. That said, I love your channel and reactions as a whole. Your experience as a roadie adds a very different dynamic to your reactions. Thanks for starting your channel and doing these reactions.
This is probably one of my all time favorite Nightwish songs because it's so simple and different. There's no greater meaning behind it. Marco had a fun idea for a song that didn't fit well with Tarot, Tuomas liked it and decided to put it in Dark Passion Play, they finished the song together and it became THE Marco solo song. Something crafted perfectly for him as a performer for a nice little intermission in a concert.
Imagine having Floor Jansen as your backing singer!!! My Lord, the feels here man. Just discovered your channel and am enjoying the hell out of taking this journey with you
Ok so after hunderds of listening to the studio version and..almost a hundred of the Tampere version, I just realized a moment: So Marco is pulling down the intensity, in the second chorus, now consider the lyrics, he is singing about a sailor on a ship without the name saying farewell to the world, while sitting there on the chair alone, his voice fades away with the ..."left behind a long ago".. hits the feeling od loneliness...AND THEN the rest of the band comes in, like no man, no kind of loneliness, not on our watch! I probably made is up, but man... As soon this all came together in my head, this song hitted harder then ever.
I completely know personally the feelings that this song stirs up in a person. God, family, and music like Nightwish's was really the only thing that got me through being diagnosed with Stage 3 Pancreatic cancer and the following painful horror of 27 rounds of Level 3 Radiation and chemo at the age of 31. To this day there will be times when I listen to this song and just loose it, remembering being when I first got this Nightwish CD I didn't get a chance to actually listen to it until I was on the road, driving home from my Chemotherapy appointment. There I was 31 years old battling Stage 3 Pancreatic Cancer, my body in exceptional pain from the Radiation and Chemo, my future, my life so very uncertain, living in the reality that I was very very sick and how this sickness was affecting my half-side and our four kids (2 girls and twin special needs boys)... then I heard these lyrics for the very first time. I had to literally, pull my car over to the side of the road as I just sobbed, releasing all the intense emotion of my situation, my reality. The beauty of this song, to me could only come from God, it was a reminder that God would only give me what He knows I am strong enough to handle, that I had God's love and He was there with me, even then, right at that moment as I sat sobbing in my car listening to this beautiful Nightwish song. As always, listen, appreciate, and enjoy!! God Bless!!!
@@jamescurfman3284 It's God. I'm alive, I dunno about strong though. It's like I tell my kids, "you have to roll with the punches that life throws at ya." and you have to have humor or else you'll just wallow... and wallowing is no fun and has a tendency to get really boring. Above all else though, you have to appreciate the little things, small blessings of every day, and live it like it's your last day... cuz it very well just might be. Take for instance, I've loved Nightwish from the very beginning. I'll admit I'm the type of parent that's introduced her kids to all different types of music from conception on. SO my kids love Nightwish... and I just found out that my daughter has raised her littleones to love Nightwish as well, right along with all of the other music that "grandma" taught THEM to love. Talk about a true circle of music appreciation!!
Folk metal is as much home as it can be for me. Been a metal head since I was a small kid 30+ years ago. But I did grow up with a mom that always listened to folk music at home. So for me, folk metal is the perfect childhood mix.
I'm 62 years old and had been listening to 70's an 80's classic and progressive rock (genesis, yes, pink floyd, dire straits, etc.) and had not really gotten into any new artists in at least 20 years, and certainly none like Nightwish. It has been a godsend to have this new amazing music and band to listen to, especially in these times, didn't think it would happen. I truly get your father's comment!!!!!!
Please, do a reaction with your dad, if possible. To me: music is emotion. Metal, classic, jazz, blues, depending on my mood. It can help to get your mind of things, enhance joy, blow away frustrations or make you calm. It's like medicine. It's the last thing your brain loses in dementia, can bring back memories, the effect of music is magical.
I second this, I use music daily to help with anxiety and depression/anger issues associated with military ptsd, i don't know where i would be without the help of music, such an important part of my life in a positive way.
Beautiful and heartfelt reaction 💛 Thanks for showing us the person you are. Music opens the window to our souls. 'While We Sleep' by Insomnium helps me to cope with the loss of a family member and it remains a sacrament to me. I believe this song must remind you of someone very dear to you.
@@monstercookies2726 The name of the band has nothing to do with insomnia actually. Their name derived from "In Somnium" and Somnium is latin for Dream.
I think what makes Nightwish so masterful at bringing out emotions is Tuomas’ ability to create cinematic and theatrical melodies. For Nightwish, “symphonic metal” is almost too generic of a genre for them. They’re in their own genre that can be called theatrical metal or cinematic metal. Their songs are really just epic moments filled with these amazing melodies and sounds. Everything is always an in-your-face wall of sound that gives you chills every freakin’ time. It’s incredible. On another note, for more amazing Marko vocals, check out Master Passion Greed off the same record as The Islander. It’s arguably Nightwish’s heaviest song they’ve ever done.
Yea, you get it. If any other band did what Nightwish does it would be corny as fuck but they mean it, they mean every note every layer, and that is as real as it goes. Thoumas is one of the worlds great musical genius right now, and metal people are lucky to have him in our world and not some symphony someplace.
I am waiting for the 12:30 showing, but I know what you mean. I don't get teary eyed, I get all smiles. Because he just KILLS it, just him and The Beast. He OWNS the audience. No pyro, no fancy lights, no big movie screen. It's all HIM. And he is quite enough.
From one bearded bloke in his thirties to another... this is beautiful. Music should make us feel, and touch places in our psyche that we wall off in our daily lives, and this video showcases exactly that. My favourite reaction from you by far. Thank you for sharing. In line for more folk music, please check out "Wardruna - Lyfjaberg", irrespective of a reaction. I'm almost certain it'll speak to your new found sense of home. Stay safe.
I loved your reaction to this song. You said this exactly right: "I feel like it's calling me home." Folk music awakens something primal inside, as if voices of ancestors are calling and you are taken to times you've never lived, see scenery you've never seen. This placidity that takes over is transcendental. Also, there is everything right with feeling emotions, we ARE supposed to.
Dude I feel you and I agree completely. There's just something about folk metal and symphonic metal that just really speaks to me. With Symphonic metal it's that blend of the classical instruments (especially violin and cello) and the choir within a metal framework. They don't call Tuomas the Metal Mozart for nothing. With folk metal its the traditional instruments combined with the metal. It's why I love any Nightwish song where Troy plays. OK I love any Nightwish song but you get the idea. Those traditional instruments just strip away the modern, electronic, technological world we all inhabit now where we're all semi-isolated and insulated from each other and wake up that part that sleeps in the back of my brain that remembers when we all lived much closer to each other and much more attuned to the natural world. The islander just makes me feel like I'm walking on the edge of a high cliff overlooking the crashing waves of the ocean far below in ancient Ireland or Scotland.
I am so glad you are there. To see honest und real reactions in a world full of fake reactions videos. Not only that, but being a role model for men to not hide behind mask of not showing what moves you. I struggle with that everyday und you really are helping me out.
My first real brush with folk in popular music was Jethro Tull's Songs From the Wood album. I had the same reaction you're having now. That shit stays with you.
Gets me too, your not alone. Marco has an awesome voice and as for Nightwish in general, their music makes me very emotional in a good way. Even more so with Floor's vocals. She brings another level of emotion and energy to the songs. Great reaction, good to see a grown man shed a tear in a good way. Many of us are right with you. Take care and stay safe.
Nightwish doesn't sit around the campfire, campfire sits around the Nightwish. (I stole that one). You can get your Marco and Tarja fix at the same time with these songs: "The Siren", "Dead to the World", "Feel for You", "Planet Hell". The double reaction is a good idea, I'd like to see more of that, the live, then the studio. A good suggestion for early Marco is Tarot - WIngs of Darkness (1986 version). The video of course, you would never recognize him if you didn't know it was him.
Marco is the reason I learned to play bass. He is an awesome musician for sure. Not going to lie, this song gets me every time too. Especially watching the video, I cry like a baby.
I’m a 42 year old geezer and there is a lot of Nightwish songs that make my eyes go a bit wet. There is some other bands too that get me emotional, but there is just something special in these NW songs. Poet and the pendelum gets me every single time.
I told you there were weasels in the Nightwish rabbit-hole! Many double-necks are made in Australia too! He asked if the crowd would sing with him..... Silly question!!!!..... Floor's t-shirt: "My husband has a tank".... Irene Jansen's child's t-shirt: "My uncle has a tank!"..... Marco's t-shirt: "Floor is my back-up singer!"..... Nightwish was and is so fire, when they go bush, the fire sits around them! There's another live version getting around with beardless Troy, Jukka and Anette - well worth a look!
Ohhh bless you, but still cant wait till the poet and the pendulum or the greatest show on earth comes.....you gonna turn into the niagara falls..... keep rocking dude . Greerzz from 🇳🇱🇳🇱🇳🇱🤘🏻
Like you I was a hard metal guy... I spent years hiding my pain and fears in a cocoon of metal and punk rock... This music does call you home! Once in a while we get to be witness to something so powerful yet so beautiful that it drops you to your knee's and pernitrates any barriers we've built with laser guided precision and not only fills you with hope but reclaims a portion of your soul back...Like you dad you feel young again! This song has an emotional place for me but the band related song that actually made to tears shoot out of my eyes (not taking anything from Annette!) was Floor's performance of phantom of the opera with Henk Poort, When she hits that final note my tears were involuntary, the train had left the station! There was no reeling them back in. Great reaction video! so visceral and so pure! With such a crazy year we could all use your positive message about music!
"I feel like it [folk metal] is calling me home... if that makes sense". Yes. Yes it does. Perfect sense. I don't know the flavour of folk you've been having with your metal in general (different countries have their own traditional folk music), but this particular piece has a major Celtic vibe and the low whistle Troy is playing here is an Irish instrument, as are his uilleann pipes. Irish music often has that coming-home feel to me, as does Scottish, but I do have roots in both countries (I'm English, dad's Scottish, got a couple of Irish 4th great grandparents) so I don't know if that's why or if it's a thing everybody feels. The Irish in particular have a really rich musical culture and the welcoming aspect is very much part of that - everyone joins in. But I completely understand you, it's warm and solid and comforting and just... yeah. Like I belong to it. Or it belongs to me. It's hard to express in words.
Heilung is great! More tribal than folk, I'd say, but very interesting to hear. Think Krigsgaldr live is the best video with them. Maria Franz (the female lead) has also been singing in other bands, such as Euzen, which I'd also recommend for some music of a somewhat non-specific genre. (Judged by, or Phobia) While looking back at those videos I also happened to come across Shireen - UMAI, which strikes a similar chord with me. Then there's Feurschwanz, of course...
One of the best comments I have seen for the official video is “ nightwish don’t sit around the campfire to keep warm, the campfire sits around nightwish to keep warm.” Loved the reaction man, if nightwish doesn’t move you, you must not be human.
Tank my man you are not alone with the feels. Nightwish gets me everytime. I can barely listen to "Hows the Heart" and don't get me started on "The Poet and the Pendulum". Mate, it shows you respect the music, the artist and the journey they take you on, no one every apologises when a song makes them smile so why do it when it makes you cry?
Hey Tank, I totally get it. I'm also 33, but I've been listening to Nightwish since Dark Passion Play came out. Nightwish was my first metal band, and the first band I ever saw in concert. The Islander has always been my favourite song from them of all time precisely because -- even more than 10 years later -- I STILL get teared up, goosebumps, the emotional thrill run through me every time I hear the song. Once they get to "Now his love's a memory / a ghost in the fog / he sets his sails one last time / saying farewell to the world / Anchor to the water / Seabed far below / Grass still in his feet / And a smile beneath his brow" I always get overwhelmed. Always. One other song that evokes a similar emotional response in me has always been Embrace the Endless Ocean by Amon Amarth. If you've never listened to it, I highly recommend it! It's not one of the more famous songs by Amon Amarth but I love it for being able to evoke that emotional response.
Total agreement with your dad. Stuck in lockdowns etc. etc. I turned to TH-cam and, thanks to various reactors like you covering bands and singers I'de never heard of, I found music again. Nightwish is a true international treasure.
I shouldn't have seen this video, now I'm crying too. Do not worry about shedding some tears, everybody have got their tender spots on the matter. This was a top notch video reaction to a top notch band.
The first time I heard this song, I had goosebumps. This song made me feel something pure. The live version was amazing also. I think both Annette and Floor give different vibes respectively. I love your genuine emotions listening to music. It's amazing to see the raw emotion by listening to this band.
15:24 don't hide it man. I was sitting here on the edge of crying watching your reaction to this song although I had known it for many years. Guys should not hide their emotions but show them freely, cause it's not a sign of weakness. I'd rather say it's a sign of character and also strength to being able to let emotions show also in public, especially on TH-cam! Thank you for showing us your genuine reactions every time no matter if you are losing your mind over laughter or start crying cause the song touches something inside you! Thanks Tank!
When a song is able to pull out such intense emotions (of any kind), the band did everything right. And in my opinion that’s what music is about - or should be. Funny coincidence that Chase shed some tears too yesterday 😉 If you want to hear more Marko awesomeness you should definitely listen to „Endlessness“ from their latest album. I wasn’t prepared for that and it hit me hard when I heard it for the first time.
literally only found Nightwish this week, at 39 years of age i think only 2 - 3 songs have ever made me tear up, nearly every song i listen to Nightwish has me balling. i dont know how after 20 years of listening to Heavy Metal i Never came across this Band. i am SO in Love it truly is a wish that has been granted to my Soul.
Same boat as you! I first discovered them on this channel about 8 weeks ago, and I'm absolutely loving it. Every Wednesday I do a new one if you wanna come along on the journey!
@@TankTheTech this band made me find your channel, so i subbed and binged watched atleast a dozen reactions last night, so you definitely will be seeing me around :-)
It makes absolute sense. You must have the blood of the Celts or the Norse in you. I cry when I hear the pipes....I cry when I hear those melodies. It hits something very deep in my soul. It is a soul yearning...a feeling of wanting to go “Home”....which can only be something like an ancestral memory of where we came from. I’ve been to Scotland twice and it was deeply emotional, as my family came from there. I could FEEL the land weeping....such a sad history there. Robert Plant was asked one time about his music by a very good interviewer......”so much of your music has a sense of yearning in it”....if that makes sense. Robert replied that yes...the Welsh have an actual name in the Welsh tongue for soul yearning. Leave it to the Celts to have a name for soul yearning. That feeling is in the blood. Robert admitted to having that feeling of yearning his whole life, and it comes through so strongly in his last two albums. It’s also an awareness of the passing of time, and the fleeting essence of our lives.
The three singers did it for me. Floor galvanized both styles perfectly. Annette left a huge mark in Nightwish with this "perfect" production. More pop but super great. Her downside was live performances cause of personal affairs mainly. I saw them live in Pennsylvania
And this isn't even the live version! Thank you for sharing your emotions instead of hiding them, that makes the most honest reactions and that's the reason why i follow reactors like you.
Nightwish gives us a choice: Do we wanna bury the dead boy inside of us over and over again while listening to their songs, or do we actually wanna wake him up again instead. the feels...
You do so much research for your reactions that I learn a ton (I'm a 60 year old female non-metal fan of Nightwish and completely tone deaf). You make even the elements relating the production sound interesting.
The actual Mira le of nightwish is the ability of Tuomas to translate emotions into music, and the incredible luck he has had to find musicians ( to varying degrees all the singers included) that can not only identify that emotion, but share it and project it. I've said before , that nightwish is able to project joy.. wether that be bitter sweet joy, dark joy, or outright bliss.. into their playing, especially live They are music for music's sake, and that is so stunningly rare nowadays. It's not about a hook, or riff, or image. it's about music moving you in whichever direction it wants to , and a remarkable band that is willing to simply ride that wave and embellish it without forcing it. I think it's why things like, crazy guitar solos, or frankly and big singular moments over and over again would seem arrogant to the song, and why they don't do them. It's funny, because I've heard fan boys ask why Kai would choose nightwish over only playing in winter Sun, which is more technical and challenging. I disagree. Being able to be part of a singular experience and only do what makes that experience complete is so much harder than "musically masturbating". Don't get me wrong, I love Winter Sun a lot, but I would bet, if you asked, Kai would say that this ride is more challenging and more musically and emotionally satisfying in a different level. Nightwish isn't a band, it's a group of musicians creating an experience, and that why it makes people breakdown at shows and why it is responsible for so many goosebumps.
your openness about things like wanting to cry? One of the strong points of the channel. So many metalheads (been one myself since before you were born... barely, lol, got into Metal in 87, when I was 12) are so full of BS machismo. But if it's beautiful? It's beautiful. There are Metal songs, folk songs, country songs, musical stuff, like Eponine's death in Les Mis, I mostly only listen to alone, because the floodgates will open. And that's what SHOULD happen. Music is supposed to touch us. Keep up the great reactions and breakdowns, Tank!
I keep missing the premiers by minutes but oh well, i jumped as soon as i saw this one. I really love this song, both versions are fantastic, although I prefer live because of a couple of reasons, Floor being there (Anette does a great job in backing vocals, but Floor is just....Floor), Marko getting the spotlight in the 'island', his doubleneck badass instrument that I know thanks to you more of now, his sense of humor, the different arrangement with the vocal improvisation at the end...it's just amazing I'm not surprised you got emotional there because the song really feels like that, it's just too beautiful
The studio version of this song never fails to bring tears to my eyes. I was going through a lot of stuff the first time I ever heard it, and the older I get, the more meaning gets layered onto it for me. The visual of them inside the circle with the moon behind is what I want the world to look like all the time.
This performance gets me everytime, because it's like Marco was facing a 32K headed monster alone and the others slowly stepped in behind him to help. And Floor to lend her backing vocals like that. Yummy
I was listening to "All the works that adorn the world" while waking down the street and the tears started rolling. The beauty of the music just overwhelmed and and I was so happy.
How the hell did I miss this? I swear I watched it. When I watch, I comment too. I can’t find my comment and it says I haven’t watched it This song is special. It gives me goosebumps. The sound of the guitar and of Marko’s vocals, the flute Troy is playing, whatever little shaking instrument Kai is playing, the backup vocals Floor is singing, and the minimal but noticeable keyboards Tuomas is playing all come together to make a beautiful song Check out Tarot, Marko’s other band, the project Northern Kings, and his work with Delain I agree with your comment about folk music. Celtic/folk music in general makes me feel at home. Pipes and drums like violins can pack an emotional punch that brings up memories It’s a shame there’s not a lot of official live videos with Anette. She is great. I would recommend Meadows of Heaven
Just now, seriously, in the end, I could smell the fire! And I’m sitting at a hotel room! Nightwish, with Floor specifically has really brought the band to life, since I was first introduced to the band with their album called Oceanborn...
I loved to see a glimpse of your inner self trough these tears man... it was beautiful. I can relate when you say it calls you home: for me folk music is kinda calling me back... back to a time less complicated, more genuine and honest, maybe a sort of humanity's childhood without malice or other negative feelings... "Where is the wonder, where's the awe..." (cit. Nightwish - I want my Tears back!) Greetings! 👋🇮🇹🖖
And this is what is making me smile bro. A man enjoying one of my favorite artists/songs and being called home with the rest of us. Never stop enjoying music...it is magic.
Now you see how Marco uses his classical guitar training beautifully. Your father sounds a lot like myself. I have not felt emotional in this way about music for too many years. I have had many male singers give me goosebumps over great vocal & musical sections. But, have never consistently felt so much emotion in one band/singers performances over and over again. Maybe it is because I am getting older, but I don't think that is the answer. Nightwish and Tuomas' musical and vocal melodies are special, but Floor seems to be the key to this band for me. It doesn't hurt to have someone as talented as Marco as well. Marco wrote the music to this song and Tuomas wrote the lyrics. This team of musicians is so great together. They all bring something special to the sound of Nightwish. I loved your reaction video and look forward to the next one. It might be cool to do a reaction video with your father? If there are any Nightwish songs he has not already heard yet? Be well my friend. Peace.
Good call my dude! This song is amazing for all the reasons. Calling me home... yes, that is perfect! As amazing as all of Nightwish's singers are, I really think Marko is the backbone of this band for me. The reality is that each member on their own is a world class musician, and nobody can compose like Tuomas, but there's just something special about Marko. I can't wait to see all the new folk metal that you get into. Gonna still give a plug for Tyr, Metsatoll and Orphaned Land. Awesome video!
This is by far one of my favorite Nightwish songs, of all. But I completely understand the feeling of being called home. As you said, I never knew how to put it into words, but that's how I feel when I listen to folk style metal.
To have emotions is a good thing, even the sad ones. I think it's amazing that music can do this to us. I've always cried at music at one time or another. I'm actually a huge sucker for old Irish folk music. It just gets me. Nightwish do a very good job of reducing me to tears also. I sent "The greatest Show on earth" to my folks who are late 70s & both said that they cried. Music can lift us, take us on these journeys. That's why we love it
@@TankTheTech ah yeah it's really amazing how we can be energised or reduced to sobs from music & it's a shared experience. Makes me think of the Mother Love Bone song "This is Shangrila" Take me to the stage, it brings me home again - this is Shangrila. I used to go to gigs up to 3 times a week when I was able bodied. I'm 6'1 & covered in tattoos usually look pretty intimidating, until I see Nine Inch Nails. My mate got seats tickets for her n her mum but then she got GA so she was like if you're happy to hang out with mum you can have it so I had met her mum & liked her. Didn't expect her to be hugging me stroking my hair 🤣 Never apologise for feelings
"Is this a Marco solo song?"
"Well... technically yes, but no."
It's a Marco and the Weasels song.
Now he has so sadly left, maybe they can be renamed Nightweasel. ;)
Got me on that one!! 🤣
Heh, my favorite comment I read on the original video was, "In Soviet Russia, campfire sits around you!"
And yeah, as a singing bass player myself, Marko is one of my heroes, and I'm jealous of him.
@@quizzabella That's just adorable and really made my shity day better. Thanks for sharing.
There is no shame in having emotions or shedding a tear to good music. You are not alone !
agree! I feel sympathy for those that aren't moved by music. Such a gap in their soul they must have.
that is why it is created to make people feel something...this live version just makes me feel so happy as it shows the chemistry of the band...from Marco knowing his band mates will come in on time to Floors smile as Marco is celebrated by the crowd.
I'm just happy to know that I'm not the only sobby one because of Nightwish songs.
Couldn't agree more! I've only recently found Nightwish myself, and I've already had at Least half a dozen of their Masterpieces bring me to tears!
"Yeah, we're touchy, feely, sensitive guys, I ain't ashamed I cried when Micky died in Rocky 2!" - Dropkick Murphys
If I remember correctly, Marco actually wrote the melody for this song. The story is, in a nutshell, that Tuomas heard Marco playing it backstage or something at some point and liked it, and when he asked about it Marco said it was just something he had been writing but that wouldn't really work for his band Tarot, and Tuomas was like "We could do it with Nightwish if you want", so Marco finished writing the music, and Tuomas wrote the lyrics, and the rest is history.
cool :) on the album, Marco receives sole songwriting credit.
It's interesting because Marco also wrote the music for "The Crow, the Owl, and the Dove". I think it was Tuomas who said the most metal person in the band wrote the softest song on the album.
For me it's one of the most beautiful Songs from Nightwish ever. And next to "Storytime" it's a Song, which was perfect for Anette!
Beautiful
Marco fandom should be continued with "While your lips are still red - Live @ Wembley" It showcases his vocal range well.
That one is even more emotional than The Islander in my opinion:) I hope he reacts to it
And that he does the music video too!!! great shots from the movie :)
@@antxoncarbonero Me, too. It's been a fave of mine for many years now.
Oh yeah, that is my favorite Marco lead song
While your lips are still red makes me cry everytime.. I miss mi lady..
No one hates Marko. Thank you Marko for all these years.
If you want to see some more Marko singing, check out Nightwish's cover of Pink Floyd's High Hopes. Marko absolutely kills it on vocals & is easily the best Pink Floyd cover to date from anyone.
Definitely will one of these days!
100%
the original is still better
specially the "pulse" live version
this would be a thing to react to
that set what PF got at the live show is just beyond
As a long time Pink Floyd fan, I have to say, I think Nightwish did a fantastic job with High Hopes. It is extremely rare for me to like any Pink Floyd cover, but this one is awesome.
Nightwish 👉🏼🥇
The stronger the better. xD.

Holy shit dude.. this is exactly what i was going to say but i saw this first so now i cant! I am also 35, crazy.
"Folk metal is calling me home"!
Beautifully said!
Two years later and I'm here commenting. One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Oh, and go give your old man a hug while you still can.
Thank You again Tank! Story behind the song! (I just translated this to English)
(C) Tuomas Holopainen: " I would have been willing to pick this up from the Dark Passion Play album as a single, if the singer hadn’t just changed( Tarja ----> Anette 2006).
Joulu Pukki The lyrics makes me think of Klaatu-the loneliest of creatures.
@@juanitooctavio9023 There's a point about those words. Klaatu's song itself, reminds me, Queens Bohemian Rapsody, in many places and the Band itself looks like Motorhead 😀
@@pyssy123 Motorhead? Nah! Marko hasn't volume and tone knobs on his face!
(Respectfully said. He himself joked about that)
Man, when you get yourself up to the live version of “the poet and the pendulum “ you’re definitely are going to break down ..
nice reaction Tank .
Oh jeez, Poet breaks *everyone*. This is a phenomenal primer for THAT emotional beast of a song. If you're not crying by the end, you're not listening.
This is 100% fact, also really helps to dig on the backstory before listening.
@@Pitchblackbones When I first listened without contexted part 2 and 4 hit me over the head. after a few listens and some context 3 and 5 hit me like a truck it is really hard not to cry.
@@brianhalligan9268 absolutely! And the impact changes based on your mood. It's *always* an emotional song, but whichever emotion gets ramped up *really* depends on your headspace when you go into it.
yup, he did XD

About Beste Zangers:
There's a Dutch TV show called Beste Zangers.
I recommend taking a look:

Awesome, legit reaction. I am in my late 40's, and generally speaking, am a very unemotional, stoic person.
This song, along with several other Nightwish songs, turn on the waterworks each & every time. I can't explain it, but there it is.
Thumbs up, dude.
I must agree, Nightwish really hits in the right spots with some of their songs. The Poet and the Pendulum is another one of those, especially when you're familiar with the backstory and the lyrics. That middle part with the boy... man...
Very true! Although Im in my early 40s 😉
Dark Passion Play is my favorite NW album! I loved Annette on it. I also think Floor fits the band perfectly
I didn't discover Nightwish until the Annette era so she holds a special place. But love Tarja and Floor just as much.
If that isn't all the cred *ever* needed: "Floor Jansen does my backing vocals."
(Edit) I've watched this reaction at least 10 times over the last couple days. It's rapidly become one of my favorites! Tank, don't ever apologize for getting emotional at music... that's the whole point.
Jeff K When a song hit you, it hits you.
@TankTheTech That is THE best reaction you've done to date. Thank you for being willing to share with everyone that way, and thanks for allowing all of us to share it with you. Freakin Awesome. Just ... Awesome.
Thank you so much, man!
”Last of the Wilds” , instrumental masterpiece, got same feeling as this song
Ditto🤘🏻
Just much more upbeat. :) I actually haven't listened to that one in a while.
Whole Imaginaerum suited Anette more than Dark passion play did IMO
Anette gave a lot different vibe to the band. A vibe which I liked a lot. Floor isn't bad in any way, but what did with Anette was amazing.
Tank Tip: Always have tissue's ready when reacting.
I love this band! I'm 65 years old and this band makes me so emotional. I just love everyone's part and how they highlight everyones talents,. Marco is awesome!!
I wouldn't trust anyone who doesn't get emotional by Nightwish songs. They'd have be an alien robot or sociopath. Neither would I want to spend with.
You know you’re not doing to bad when you got Floor singing back up for ya! The Floor / Marko vocal pairings are always just magical.
Thank you so much! Much love! 🙏
OMG! Hey, I'm still glad you are here with us! You must be such a strong person! WOW! :)
@@meganroberts551 It is all the little things, isn't it? God Bless, indeed. :)
@@jamescurfman3284 ;-)
Nightwish fans are comfortable with our own tears and emotions. You can't hear Nightwish without feeling something.
I love that song and when Anette was in Nightwish. Another song from this period that you might enjoy could be "Meadows of heaven".
Ohh. Meadows.. That's a masterpiece that gets way too little attention.
This song and Meadows are two of my favorite Nightwish songs with Anette
It was a beautiful song. Kinda ironic the band is called Insomnium and they wrote/sang a song called While We Sleep.
@@monstercookies2726 The name of the band has nothing to do with insomnia actually. Their name derived from "In Somnium" and Somnium is latin for Dream.
@@juliettemcgee9055 damn. I loved that.
The moment when you have Floor Jansen in the backing vocals =))
Marko actually have a T-shirt with the text..Floor is my backup singer :)
@@argantyr5154 What? Where'd you hear that? People in all the Islander reactions say he SHOULD have such a shirt, but that doesn't mean he does.
Is that a lixiry or what?
@@pmasher I believe I've read it several times in Reactions, but with you saying this, I start to second guess myself.
14:10 me too man. me too. Nightwish has always been powerful and is one that I always come back to, to feel a sense of home or belonging I guess.
cant wait till the day "the greatest show on earth" is up :D great work m8 :) keep rocking! \m/
Stay safe.
Same thoughts here.
Wardruna Lyfjaberg, He really should do it
that shot of Tuomas at 16:51 was really haunting for some reason o_o
He looks so Byronic^^
Watch the High Hopes video - Tuomas does that. Looking for his muse? Thanking his personal guardian angel?
Yessssss oh my gosh that part really got me, he's lovely
I loved your reaction to this song. You said this exactly right: "I feel like it's calling me home." Folk music awakens something primal inside, as if voices of ancestors are calling and you are taken to times you've never lived, see scenery you've never seen. This placidity that takes over is transcendental. Also, there is everything right with feeling emotions, we ARE supposed to.
This is one of my favorite songs featuring Marko. Really lets you see a lot of his personality and vocal range.
I cannot even understand someone not loving this. Who dislikes it. The freedom in Marco's voice when he sings with Floor
I am so glad you are there. To see honest und real reactions in a world full of fake reactions videos. Not only that, but being a role model for men to not hide behind mask of not showing what moves you. I struggle with that everyday und you really are helping me out.
Thanks a ton!
3:55: Marko "So, if I sing the chorus, will you all sing along?"
Crowd "Woooooo"
Marko "You will?"
Crowd "WOOOOOOO"
Marko "Ok, here it goes"
Another shout out for Heilung anything live will give you chills. Serious folk metal matey.
(Judged by, or Phobia)
While looking back at those videos I also happened to come across Shireen - UMAI, which strikes a similar chord with me.
Then there's Feurschwanz, of course...
I recommended them too. 🤣
@@jaega4247 I agree, describing their sound is tricky. Proto germanic, Norse, bone and skull metal, with antlers might put a chap off.
Definitely worth a listen.
For sure happening soon!
Once they get to "Now his love's a memory / a ghost in the fog / he sets his sails one last time / saying farewell to the world / Anchor to the water
/ Seabed far below / Grass still in his feet / And a smile beneath his brow" I always get overwhelmed.
Funny coincidence that Chase shed some tears too yesterday 😉
If you want to hear more Marko awesomeness you should definitely listen to „Endlessness“ from their latest album.
The word is "hiraeth", which is beautiful by itself even without knowing the meaning. I'm half Scottish with Welsh ancestry, and I get this entirely.
It calls me home too.
Music always gets me emotional & the tears are unstoppable.
Folk metal hits me the hardest. 😭😭😭😭
The three singers did it for me. Floor galvanized both styles perfectly. Annette left a huge mark in Nightwish with this "perfect" production. More pop but super great. Her downside was live performances cause of personal affairs mainly. I saw them live in Pennsylvania
Heavy on the folk lately too. Heilung, Faun, Nightwish. They just hit the soul
This is hands down one of my favorite older nightwish songs
I've said before , that nightwish is able to project joy.. wether that be bitter sweet joy, dark joy, or outright bliss.. into their playing, especially live
They are music for music's sake, and that is so stunningly rare nowadays.
I really love this song, both versions are fantastic, although I prefer live because of a couple of reasons, Floor being there (Anette does a great job in backing vocals, but Floor is just....Floor), Marko getting the spotlight in the 'island', his doubleneck badass instrument that I know thanks to you more of now, his sense of humor, the different arrangement with the vocal improvisation at the end...it's just amazing
I'm not surprised you got emotional there because the song really feels like that, it's just too beautiful
I can’t find my comment and it says I haven’t watched it
This song is special. It gives me goosebumps. The sound of the guitar and of Marko’s vocals, the flute Troy is playing, whatever little shaking instrument Kai is playing, the backup vocals Floor is singing, and the minimal but noticeable keyboards Tuomas is playing all come together to make a beautiful song
Check out Tarot, Marko’s other band, the project Northern Kings, and his work with Delain
I agree with your comment about folk music. Celtic/folk music in general makes me feel at home. Pipes and drums like violins can pack an emotional punch that brings up memories
It’s a shame there’s not a lot of official live videos with Anette.
Nightwish - I want my Tears back!)
Greetings! 👋🇮🇹🖖
And this is what is making me smile bro. A man enjoying one of my favorite artists/songs and being called home with the rest of us. Never stop enjoying music...it is magic.
Please try also this "Marco song": Kiss while your lips are still red. Same thing. Live+video.
BRO! The fact that you used finntroll in the intro just made me a fan!
🤘🤘🤘
I'm 41 and music is pretty much the only thing that makes me cry outside of a life crisis. It's like it somehow opens the otherwise well shut gates.
My 9 year old son and I LOVE Nightwish. The Islander is his absolute favorite song. Thank you for reacting to this wonderful song.
I wrote it in another comment, to one of your REACTIONS and I rewrite it now: HIGH HOPES Pink Floyd, cover by Nightwish Live End of an Era
This is by far one of my favorite Nightwish songs, of all. But I completely understand the feeling of being called home. As you said, I never knew how to put it into words, but that's how I feel when I listen to folk style metal.
I love when touf guys like tank gets emotional! Greatings from germany! I'm looking forward to this reaction
That's why we love it
I still can't even listen to the studio version of this song when it comes up on my playlist. I have to skip it or I start balling.
@@TankTheTech ah yeah it's really amazing how we can be energised or reduced to sobs from music & it's a shared experience. Makes me think of the Mother Love Bone song "This is Shangrila"
Take me to the stage, it brings me home again - this is Shangrila. Didn't expect her to be hugging me stroking my hair 🤣
Never apologise for feelings
