Andrew Yang On UBI And Human-Centered Capitalism

  • Andrew Yang has succeeded in raising the visibility of issues like universal basic income even as he trails front-running candidates like Joe Biden Elizabeth Warren, and Bernie Sanders in polls for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. According to Yang, technology has eroded fundamental American assumptions about capitalism and government needs to set a new direction.
    As an attorney and successful entrepreneur, Yang doesn't have many of the traditional presidential credentials. Recently he's focused on boosting start-ups through his Venture for America nonprofit.
    Yang has built his campaign around what he calls The Freedom Dividend - a $1,000 per month “universal basic income” intended to cushion the impact of technological advances that have begun to supplant large swaths of the American workforce. Americans of every income level would receive it, with the enormous cost financed by a value-added tax under which the bottom 94% of earners would come out ahead.

      Question: "You've specifically laid out how you plan to pay for the Freedom Dividend, can you please tell us specifically how you plan to pay for Medicare For All?"
      Yang's answer: "My plan to pay for Medicare for All is based on our current spending. We spend 18% of GDP on our healthcare - about twice what other countries are spending. A friend of mine in the investment space says that she has never seen profiteering at the level she currently sees among device and drug companies. Similarly, we have a massive private health insurance industry - who put up strong profits each year. Right now our system is built to drive revenue and receivables.
      The confusion on Medicare for All is that we are already spending the money - it is just coming from businesses and consumers. If, as the CEO of a company, the government came to me and said, "Hey, great news. We now will pick up everyone's healthcare. But you need to give us a lot of the money you are currently spending on their health insurance" I would have been thrilled. Because it's not just the money out of the business. It's the fact that costs always go up every single year AND you have to have uncomfortable conversations and negotiations every year with employees."

    • @itzdaniel83
      @itzdaniel83 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Sergio Aguirre well Yang has always been referred to as long shot candidate so I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't make it to the White House, hell I wouldn't be surprised at all if he dropped out in 2020. He brought to light many important issues that is facing the working class. You tell me to enjoy Trump's 2nd term like because you assume that I'm a Trump hater. Lmao, I'm neither left or right. Get over yourself.

    • @itzdaniel83
      @itzdaniel83 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Sergio Aguirre If he wins a second term I fully support it. It doesn't do the country any good for people to bicker and fight. You should go out and do something positive for his reelection campaign instead of scouring the comment section of social media to insult people because they have a different view from you. This behavior doesn't help his campaign at all. At least represent the candidate you support in a positive light. Let the outcome do the talking.

    • @itzdaniel83
      @itzdaniel83 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Sergio Aguirre lol you jumped into my comment about Yang because you support Trump. I can't imagine how nasty you would be if I had said anything bad about him. You hate people because they have a different point of view from you. Hate is a poison you carry which will eventually lead to mental illness. You live your life with nothing but negativity. I hope your poison doesn't seep into the next generation.

    • @blobbo4645
      @blobbo4645 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ari Bloch a VAT is a tax on the rich, especially because it exempts consumer staples like food and clothes. Someone like me doesn’t even have enough disposable income to pay $10 into it, maybe around $60-80 with UBI. Rich people on the other hand will be paying in thousands or even millions for those top earners. Plus, VAT will tax business to business transactions between data companies, and value gains from multi billion tech companies like google and Facebook that don’t actually sell a good, but will be forced to finally pay taxes based on value gains. Unless you earn a few hundred K a year, you will be getting more money back than you put in, so yes when it comes down to it I expect the rich to pay for the UBi of the bottom 92%. Not to mention the argument that a lot of money will be saved (from hospitalization, incarceration, millions of families being lifted out of debilitating stress, anxiety, uncertainty) by investing in people before things get bad. Preventative care approaches are much more efficient than having people fall out of society, and aim to tackle problems before they get worse.

      The beauty of the freedom dividend + VAT is that it doesn’t come from printing money. It comes from capitalism re-circulating money throughout the economy rather than letting it get locked up at the top. Inflation comes from printing more money. In contrast, Alaska’s oil dividend payout leads to sales because companies compete for the money when it’s distributed.

He can do it, and he knows he has to or no one else will. a true legend. Also, people need to get off their work ethic moral high horse and decide that non workers don't get paid, because they will spend it on drugs and alcohol or whatever they fancy, since you know , they are slackers and slackers always do those things
      To be sure, Suppose we DO have a chronic troublemaker, and indeed spends them on booze and drugs. Would you rather they
      a) spend their own UBI money
      b) Rob you (or your family) first then spend the money
