The responses from almost everyone in this video are significantly more thoughtful and sensible than responses from people who are interviewed on the street in Russia. I have no idea how many people they interviewed before they took excerpts to make this video, but if you interviewed the same number of people on the street in the USA or in Germany to ask their opinion on a serious political question, you would not get responses as thoughtful as the ones from the people in this video in Azerbaijan.

Both Canada and USA are located outside of Europe, thus dispelling the idea that a nation must be located in Europe to be a NATO member. 3. Living inside a NATO country myself, id be glad if Azerbaijan joined. Id be glad if NATO changed as well and became the Global Treaty Organization GTO. One nice thing about NATO's treaty is that even if a member state decides to invade another member state, the country that was invaded would get the all of NATO's support (excluding the invading country), The more countries that join the bigger the risk at invading any country, If the UN worked like that where any country that invades another would then face the wrath of the rest of the world militarily and economically, there'd have been no invasion of Iraq by the US in the 2000s, no invasion of Kuwait in the 1990s, no invasion of Ukraine in 2022. (At least id assume so using the same reasoning that stopped the US from invading China after it tried to get the USSR to join it in doing so only to have the USSR threaten the US with a nuke attack if it did and or like when years after the USSR asked the US if the US would join it in invading China only for the US to refuse and threatened to nuke the USSR if they invaded China. As an Azerbaijani I can say that it is definitely NOT something what Azerbaijan needs now. Hell NO! Its going to create a mess rather than add security. And reasons are simple, Russia has a military presence in the region and even in war of 2020 it was shooting its long range Iskander-M missiles to Azeri cities (thanks to Israeli AA, most of them neutralized), some of the missile fragments shown in the park of Victory in Baku. Now.. how on Earth is Azerbaijan going to defend itself during the bureaucratic approval process from every member of NATO before actually BECOMING a member? Have you guys thought of that? Can you even think two, three steps ahead? And I am pretty sure that countries like France will be delaying the approval by as long as possible...and by that time Azerbaijan will be under missile and drone and land forces of attack from both North and South from Russia and Iran.
Its typical thing of western countries, lure someone into some club and then throw it under the bus. And then what will happen? Biden will come and with his whispering voice tell to Azerbaijan that its doing a right thing and he supports it? Or Azeri flags will be raised in brussels or Geneve or wherever? How would that help? And also, for those who are going to even dare to argue with me, here is another question to you from me: Georgia (our great friendly country) officially announced and declared that it wants to be part of NATO in early 2000s. What happened? Did you guys accept it? What happened to pro american president in Georgia? (Saakashvili)... oh right... he is in damn jail! Did you help him? Did west take Georgia in NATO?
Other people here might write that "hey look..Finland joined and it was quick" and the thing is, each geographic region is different, its much more difficult for Russia now in 2023 to start full blown invasion of Finland, also there are no occupied regions within Finland with pro russian forces and russian boots on the ground there, and territory is bigger and easier to defent to Finland. Azerbaijan (and so is Georgia) is different story. Also there is no "Iran" close to Finland which would immediately start military operation with Finland should Russia give signal. But in case of Azerbaijan, there are two hostile countries on North and South with million-strong army. And you offer Azeris to throw themselves under bus? for "security"? come on... I Understand that those people you ask say yes, but they have not thought about it deeply, and those are just regular people who know nothing of how military strategy, war and politics works.
so.. please keep hands off Azerbaijan OK? How about you first make Ukraine win, get its land fully back, then do same for Georgia and then you come back to Azeris asking same question, and for now, Azerbaijan already has its allies - Turkey (whos soldiers ready to fight and die for Azerbaijan) and Pakistan (same thing) and ..Israel (no matter how strange it might look to someone but Azerbaijan and Israel are very close friends, and I love it). We do not need impotent and picky NATO joining process which will bring more bombs on Azeri cities than security before Azerbaijan joins.

I think there is a little confusion for some as to what NATO membership is. Some seem to think of it as a economic and political union as well when it is a primarily a mutual defense agreement that has economic and political preconditions for membership meant to ensure a nation is stable and not corrupt. A large part of the reason for this is to avoid a constant turnover of government in the member as well as ensure the member can live up to its obligations to the other members.
The real accomplishment of NATO has been that it has kept member nations from fighting with each other because not only are they obligated to defend each other from outside aggressors, but also from an attack from a member state against another member. This has been a feature that has encouraged member states to negotiate and has led to the formation of other treatise once thought impossible like the European Union and other economic pacts.
Oddly it was even proposed that Russia join NATO soon after the collapse of the USSR as their membership would have settled a lot of the security issues of Europe through the very means of mutual defense. But the economic situation in Russia was in upheaval and corruption was rampant, making it impossible to seriously pursue at the time...and we all know how that has evolved from there.

Sooner or later, the western nations will have to choose between Armenia and Azerbaijan. I think the politically expedient choice for NATO would probably be Azerbaijan, as it is the stronger and less Russia affiliated of the two. But choose as we must, morally both choices feel awful.
If you side with Azerbaijan, you condemn the ethnic Armenians in the disputed region, and perhaps beyond, to a third, final, and probably one sided Nagorno-Karabakh war that will cement an autocrat's grip over his victorious nation, and leave his enemies to his tender mercy.
If you side with Armenia, you effectively enshrine what happened in the 1990s, a breach of the international codes of conduct of the kind that Putin would love nothing more than to justify as he wages war on Ukraine. Another breach in the already damaged firewall that is supposed to separate a modern rules based world order, unfair and flawed it may be, from the older, more violent predecessor based on the sword and the gun.

A very reasonable assessment. Perhaps the best way forward is to side with neither, but try to bring people together.
This might be quite difficult as, like the Jews in the Middle East, only one side has suffered a genocide and so has very raw feelings, all the more so as that genocide in this case was at the hands of their Turkic neighbours, not distant foreigners.
As a distant foreigner who has not suffered genocide, it is hard for me to fully comprehend the difficulties here.
