CHAMONIX Classic ski tours - Col du Passon UNTRACKED POWDER!

  • Day 4/4 of the early April powder, after getting first lifts up at Grands Montets. The Col du Passon is probably one of the best known and most popular lift accessed ski tours in the Chamonix valley, due in part to its more than 1500m of continuous vertical descent! Before the old cable car burned down the traditional start was from the summit of Grands Montets, giving an additional 1000m or so of descent before starting the climb. Today most people either start skinning from Lognan (the mid station), or take TS Herse and then ski down and round to join the lower skin track (as we did). Those who are really keen/fit can still skin up and over the Col des Rachasses first and ski down the Glacier des Rognons as per the traditional route. Whichever way you choose, be sure to start early and move fast to beat the crowds, and ascend the couloir before it gets too warm.
This was my third time skiing the route, both previous times had terrible snow conditions on the descent, so it was amazing to finally be able to enjoy the downhill more than the uphill! Being able to find large swathes of untouched powder was an added bonus, and a real rarity in Chamonix.

I have so enjoyed your vids these last few months. I wd llike to see how you get your bag off and skis on on the steeps without losing anything.
Also is there anything accessible from lifts or is such not worth the bother?
So nice not to get all that "yeah man, oh dude, awsome" shouting. A simple "bravo" more than suffices.
    Well done.

With care! It helps having a good bag with sensible ski stowing straps. But you basically dig yourself a decent platform and do it all carefully!

Well you have lots of steep skiing off of the aiguille du midi, both the cosmique couloir and glacier rond are directly accessible without needing to skin or boot pack up (with a bit of side stepping). Plus you have the paserelle couloir which you absail directly off of the midi! There are others too on the north face. There is the poubelle couloir off if the top of the bochard lift at GM, but you need to be able to fly to get out at the bottom these days

Beautiful. Thank you very much. But how many times a year do you get freshtracks like that?
