    Moral of the story: If you're going to insist someone use your logo on their products, give them all the assets to do so, don't make them guess at anything.

      I'm probably too young to know this for sure, but I bet industry standards at the time weren't at the point yet where you could just "share" your 3D model with anyone.
      I have different engineering experience, but whenever you have to deal with old PLCs or legacy hardware at work, it's usually a nightmare to even interface with it -- let alone modify it.
      Every company had their own proprietary HMIs (and i mean everything from language, software, connectors, to even comm protocols -- since the serial port was already an attempt at standardizing communication, if you can believe that).

    The fact that some companies bothered with making their own 3D models instead of just using an image despite Nintendo not providing proper assets really shows that they cared about their games. The logo only shows for a few seconds but somebody had to sit down to model and program it in there

    The documentation from Nintendo you showed mentioned that developers could contact Nintendo to get an Alias file of the logo. 1:27 I'm nitpicking here, but wouldn't DK64 & Diddy Kong Racing be considered 2nd-party games because they were developed by Rareware, not Nintendo? The way I always thought of it was: 1st party games are ones developed AND published by Nintendo, 2nd party games would be games published by Nintendo, but under another developer (Rareware, HAL, etc) & 3rd party games would be developed & published by a different studio.

  • @TheDisarminghinkle
    @TheDisarminghinkle 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The entire story of Conker's Bad Fur Day is a metaphor for Rare's frustration with Nintendo's game design decisions. They felt the entire concept of a collectathon was a bad idea (ironic considering that Rare made the best collectathons). Which is why Conker's Bad Fur Day is a game about collecting money which you never use resulting in Conker getting everything anyone could ever want, but losing everything he wanted. It culminates in a completely empty and soundless black screen followed by a really morose credits roll to say to the audience, "Congratulations, you collected everything in a video game. Here's what you get: nothing."
    So, starting the game by demonstrating the frustration and hatred they've built up for the logo over the years of using it is pretty hilarious.

    • @DamianYerrick
      @DamianYerrick 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Monody512 PRNGs need a seed, or they'll return the same sequence every time. I know there is an obscure seed source in the NES PPU, for which I made a tech demo called "Pretendo". But I don't know if there's one in the N64 RSP (shader) or RDP (triangle filler).

    • @Monody512
      @Monody512 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DamianYerrick Alright, then the second method I mentioned above should work.
      Every time the game is booted, read a value in the save data, display a logo variant based on that, then write the value incremented by one. As long as the battery doesn't die and nobody takes the time to write down the whole sequence of likely at least 256 logos, it'd appear random.

  • @xaytana
    @xaytana 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The official logo only makes sense as a 2d image, not a 3d object.
    As a 2d image, all of the faces are neatly broken by color. There's not a single overlap where you have the same color, this is why the third slanted face is green instead of red, as if it was red, it would blend with the slanted face in front of it, which would have taken away from the cube illusion. To add to this, the green N and the green slanted face is broken up by both the red slanted face and the yellow square, which is also why the logo has four colors.
    If the original logo was designed to be 3d, they would have used an additional color color. Yellow being on the x-y plane, blue being on the y-z plane, and green being on the x-z plane, leaving red and the missing fifth color to be on the two orientations of the non-planar faces.
    Honestly, I think they should have swapped the red and yellow, have the base cube be RGB, then have the non-planar faces be yellow and either magenta or cyan; we only see two orientations of the non-planar faces, so the sixth color would be out. This would have prevented all of these issues, as each face orientation has a defined color, none of this red/green/blue nonsense on the slanted faces.
    Of the two colors for the fifth color, magenta would work better. The non-planar faces face two planes at once, all of them face the x-y plane, which in my example would be red, while one of the two faces the x-z plane, green, and the other faces the y-z plane, blue. In the RGB color space, red and green mix to be yellow, and red and blue mix to be magenta; we never see an orientation that would face x-y and y-z, so we would never see cyan.
    From a design perspective, this would work well for the 3d variant, and would also work for the 2d variant, and you could flawlessly create the 3d version from the 2d image; it also works well with color theory. The official logo only works in 2d, once you go to make a 3d variant, there's no clear model to follow, which causes confusion, and the theory of how the slanted faces are colored just does not work in 3d, while it works fine in 2d.

    They made their sides red because red is the color aside form yellow that the logo lacks the most.

    So for everyone who's confused as fuck. Here's a really simple formula on how to make the official N64 logo.
    Green face - Red on top. Blue on bottom.
    Blue face - Green on top. Red on bottom.
    The back face should be the same color as the front. About the right top side of the N and bottom left side of the N, you may ask. They are part of the back face of whatever is connected to, so should be the same color as the face it is connected to. Also the poles should all be yellow, including the bottom that's about it.
    My god, no wander Conker said it was a stupid logo. This is like Rocket Science or getting stuck on a error code on a script for hours until you realized you misspelled that code. No wander over a third of N64 games got the logo wrong. They should've just paste a picture of the logo instead as the startup, instead of a full 3d spinning N64 logo model if they're not sure about the coloring.

    The bottom actually alternates between red and blue if you look closely at the N64DD, Majora's Mask, or even Banjo... If we are going to be as pedantic as this video is.

    Why couldn't Nintendo just provide a 3D model for the logo with the devkit software?

    • @Eddies_Bra-att-ha-grejer
      @Eddies_Bra-att-ha-grejer 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @SublimeHawk6 They provided instructions that any use of the N64 logo in games had to follow how it looks in the official artwork, but there was no reference model provided, so it was nearly impossible for the developers to get it right. A reference model would likely only take up a few kilobytes, they could have included it with the devkit software.

    6:25 because it is a solid color and it looks strange and loses the 3d effect when you dont color it in a diferent color! Omho they needed another color to insides.
