I'm always looking for old classic semi trucks to save and restore. I'm also always looking for trucks or parts Detroit Diesel related. If you have one that needs to be saved or you know of one you can drop me an email at the following address: Ol2Stroker@gmail.com
Be sure to check out our website ol2stroker.com for truck parts and merch!
That must be crazy hearing a Detroit going by and instead of seeing an old bus or an old mack you see a suburban going past you
I remember when our city garbage trucks had V6 Detroit’s in them. When they’d go to compact they’d floor it and man those things screamed. Old GMC trucks they were.
one of my favorite swaps i've ever seen by a mile
Sounds like a boat
@@FLORIDAMANIAM-he2lz the 4 banger definitely isn’t on the list of best sounding DD’s that’s for sure.
to verify it was the burban that was the source of the noise, just check the street for oil. The old saying for the detroits was "if it ain't leaking, it ain't running".
When they made the “Detroit” powered suburbans, this is what they should have meant.
💯💯💯💯
I agree, but having a 6.2 suburban right now, the 20 mpg+ offroad is nice LOL
As an owner of a 6.5 “Detroit” that has pissed away way too much $ on it only to have it puke head gaskets again, I fully agree! (Although the 6.5 would tow a 35’ camper at 70 mph and get 17-19mpg)
The cool thing about the 1990s 6.5 Turbo Suburbans was that they were 1500 HD, they had 8 lugs, torso bar front suspension, bigger brakes, 4L80e transmission and a 14 bolt rear end. I believe his 1995 is the only year that the 5.7 TBI had a 4L60E. It'd be cool if he could swap an NV4500, ZF-5 or ZF-6 into it from some scrap rusted out 3/4-1 ton upstate NY truck.
I believe they were 3/4 tons as well not just heavy halves you could get the 6.2 6.5 in both 6 lug half tons to one tons tho
Cut the Floors and put an Eaton 10 speed in. Love your videos I used to own old two stroke dump trucks. Probably why I can’t hear much!
Thatd be nuts!!
& holy crap 💩 Wayne that is no joke of light work with that flywheel assembly 😮
& holy shit u can say that again & = wow it's like u being yur own re- engineering/ = good 4 u
& a question, what really stops all of that metal plates from rubbing together?
What trans did you use 350 lockup or 700R4. 700’s were always kinda picky as to tv cable adjustment. Play around with it to change your shift points What’s wrong with Jimmy and the cone? That’s definitely the neatest sounding one on the road !
My father and grandfather did that to a GMC Jimmy back in the late '70's. They put in a 353. It was my grandfather's truck. He would pick me up from school in it. He had a pull knob to shut it down (fuel) and an emergency shutdown pull knob (air). He pulled an airstream all the way to Alaska in it. That sound brings back memories.
I think you mean 653 (6 cyls, 53CI/cyl) b.k.a. 318 Detroit.
@@stargasm1000 Nope. It was a 353. 3 cylinder, 53ci per cylinder. He and my father didn't have any performance information or anything to go on, so he didn't know it was going to be a bit anemic. Back then, the speed limit was 55mph on the highway. He said, pulling the Avion travel trailer, that was its top speed. But if you so much as ran over a piece of paper, it was going to drop. This was before the internet, so all you could do was ask around to get information. Since nobody had done anything like this before, you just tried it and "we'll see what happens."
Man I go through this same process - Buy piece of shit, fix it to sorta usable, then waffle on keeping and fixing it up some more - a week later my credit card is FUCKED up, and I still have a half-running piece of shit in my yard but it's loaded down with nice new parts... and the same amount of useful it was before. Just admit it, you're gonna keep this fuckin' thing. It's too cool.
You are my spirit animal.
Lifes a learning process, best thing we can do is take our time and be as attentive to detail as possible. Also I've found that if you have the willingness and knowledge to create an alternative solution that makes due with what you already have alot of times it's worth it especially if it improves the repairability in the event of a future failure. I've macgyver'd my way through countless problems that way and I've honestly gotten really good at solving issues without spending anything by simply repurposing scrap materials from past repairs or retrofitting components that match the functionality required even if it requires me to modify the stock setup. Many times the engineers didn't care to think about the repair aspect and their design makes it unnecessarily time consuming and/or expensive to repair with stock components. If I can achieve the same result and not break the bank I'm all for it and that's after years of believing the mantra that I'd rather fix it now than have it fail on me later on. Now Ive adopted the somewhat blow or go mindset and unless I know for a fact something is gonna fail in the very near future I don't even bother replacing it and I'm never afraid to mash the gas pedal in a vehicle I'm driving. Its either gonna go or it won't so fuck it and send it. Lol
You sound like me but I have 1 project truck (technically…lol) a 93 gmc k3500 srw ext cab long bed that is rust free, i haven’t had time to touch that truck as I’ve been maintaining my daily’s lol. I have my 03 Cadillac that was my second car but was my daily for a few years. I have an iron block 6.0 waiting to get machined for either that or the gmc. My daily’s are my truck my 92 Chevy k1500 silverado, 5.7 nv4500. Ext cab reg bed. Pile of shit but I love it, trying to slowly fix her up. My other truck which my girlfriend drives is my 99 Chevy Silverado 1500 Ext cab reg bed. 4” suspension lift gonna be installing a 3 inch body lift. Needs paint. Has leds though and my 12” in the backseat chilling 🤣. Also have my shops old 93 gmc suburban. 5.7 200k been thru 3 700rs lol. Last one I put in after I bought it for $50. Was the plow truck lol it’s a turd but solid as fuck. My back up vehicle basically / storage unit 😂
Wayne - if you ever have to pull the flywheel again, when you go back together, cut the heads off of a couple of long bolts to use as guide studs. Put them in the crank, slide flywheel on, slide spacer on. put your adapter plate in place, then put the flex plate on and tighten the flywheel bolts. Pull the line up studs and install the last two flywheel bolts. Easy peasy. Love the channel and content dude. Keep it coming!
You are from the future!!!
duh
700R4s do not have engine braking in the "OD" range - they have one-way clutches that prevent that. If you shift into the "D" range, it applies additional clutches that will enable engine braking in 1st-3rd.
It sounds like your transmission might be a gas 700R4 based on the shift points. If you swap a 700R4 diesel governor into it (they're pretty cheap), it will probably shift at more sensible speeds.
I think a 4L80E would be a better option. Much more robust and standalone controllers exist.
@@Ratkill9000 I would normally agree with you but it's a half ton suv with less than stock power and way more weight, there's nothing you can legally strap to this thing that is heavy enough to kill that transmission at this power level. 99.5% of this thing's payload capacity is devoted to existing, and the 0.5% is for the driver.
1995 Suburbans had a 5.7 TBI with a 4L60E transmission stock. That's why it needs the TPS sensor under hood still that he was pointing out to give a throttle opening signal to the computer for the trans.
It not a E with a TV cable, i had a 95 and it was a 4l60....
@@hendo337 i think 95 had a 700R4
You may have to play with the weights on the governor in the trans. The 2 stroke isn't turning it enough rpms to make it shift they way it should. The low rpm is not creating enough line pressure to make the tv cable adjustment correct. When you go full throttle, the trans is set up for 5-6000, not 2500.
I'm here for the junk and the working on thereof.
Aren't we all here for the working on junk. It's fun to watch Wayne work on junk after a day of working on junk myself. 😅
You've come to the right place
The governor in the trans is for a gas engine. You need one for a 6.2 or 6.5 Detroit. That should make it shift right. Another possibility is fine somebody who knows how to modify the weights in the governor in it currently.
It's not only the governor. The valve body is set up differently in the bushings/valves/TV/governor for each application. Doing just governor changes will make some shifts happen at a better time while making others worse. You would need to do some major changes to have a 700 work well with low RPM shift strategy.
A 200-4R from an olds 5.7l diesel would have closer to ideal shift points but is not sturdy enough for a Detroit.
All you need is a diesel vacuum modulator. It will completely change the shift characteristics
@@Foryourinfo369 For a 700-R4?
@@BillyWillicker ya they are not electronic
@@Foryourinfo369 A vacuum modulator? For a 700-R4? Are you sure?
She sounds real good. Love the sound of an old 2 stroke diesel.
That spacers is bananas. But I love it.
A 4L80E can be mated with an aftermarket controller and then you can get it to shift at the RPM's you want. With a hydraulic transmission you may be able to fenangle the throttle cable to get it to work fairly well but may not get it perfect.
I like 80s
At least a th350!
@@samholdsworth420 You need an overdrive and lockup to have reasonable highway RPMs. Having that engine running 2500 rpm on the highway will be rough. You want to bring it below 2k. Ideally 1500 orso
@@castirondude right.... I forgot the thing is a two-stroke diesel 🤣
My A model has “no guts no glory” on the back of the bunk and every time I look at it I think of that clip from Gold Rush of ol Jack. I friggen died when that popped up😆😆
Yesssssss
If you go to a 4l60 or 4l80e trans, you "could" say to heck with the computer, and look up how to hot wire the shift solenoids. Full line pressure, full manual shift. I have done it with a 4l60e and it worked mint, behind a 350 anyway. Slightly different shift solenoid sequence on the 4l80, but that can be fully wired just using the pressure switch built into transmission.. cool videos man, i really find this stuff interesting.
I love watching you work on "old junk" much more than I would like to watch people work on expensive new things. I don't like to watch rich dudes rubbing it in my face. I like watching 2 stroker because I like seeing someone who is obviously doing something they love with obsolete things, not wasting things, making things work, doing good work, tasteful work, intelligent work. I can't stand people who do click bait, who trash things for no reason, who are destructive, materialistic, act stupid or crazy on purpose. 2 stroker comes off as a genuine dude and I believe he acts the way he is on camera when he is off camera and I think he is sincere in what he says. He would probably get more views and make more money if he was like that but, I am glad he isn't willing to sacrifice his class for that. My father was a trucker from Oswego County NY, he loved all this kind of stuff. I love hearing 2Stroker talk his accent reminds me so much of the working class upstate NYer guys I was around as a kid. It really warms my heart. It's also impressive to see a guy who is doing well in spite of all the downsides of living up in NY. The weather, the economy, the government, the laws, the rust, the cost of living, the taxes. I love it up there in the summer out in the country. I'm 41 and I was in the military and I just couldn't make it up there so I live Tennessee. Thanks making these videos, I really appreciate them.
Very cool! Seems like it's running up against the governor before shifting, need to bring the shift points down a bit.
Yup
Oooh that’s a bingo!!!
this thing is literally a wet dream. thank you for making this exist on my feed.
Its definitely a cool truck
Been waiting for this. I love OBS' so can't miss it
Obs and old two stroke detroit is the cherry on top!
My man Wayne! Perfect timing on a Friday!
Turd? thats the best looking 95 suburban ive seen in 10 years
I think he means mechanically a turd
Great video, but a typical 2-stroke Diesel, sounds great like its going really fast, then you look at the scenery around you and realize it is just turning diesel fuel into smoke and noise. Still cool and better than the old 350 or 305 it used to have. A $1k truck (or less) with a $3k (or more) engine and swap into it ...
If you could find an old rusted out donor truck with an NV4500 that would be pretty cool. Even like an SM465, TH400 or an 80e. Maybe a ZF-5 or ZF-6 could be adapted...might have to find like a 1/2 ton V6 manual Chevy like that for a pedal box and stuff. Lot of work... it's a pretty decent looking truck for a 1995 GMT400, most of those are absolutely thrashed and destroyed. Probably worth it to do the body mounts, clean off the surface rusted area in the back in hit it with some of that rust reverser paint that has a chemical reaction with the iron oxide to stop the rot in the back. It seems like it would be an alright rig once you're cruising along at highway speed. Definitely seem slushy and boggy at low speeds. Ingenious build, the guy who did it must have really been a character. To drive the truck 500k miles is really a testament to how much better things were built back then. Hopefully you figure something out to do with it.
If it was easy, everyone would do it. That's what I say to make myself feel better.
Nice shifts like a out house trying to dump
Hell yeah!
I needed this today!
Freaking awesome.
Great video Wayne really enjoy watching you work on this 95 Burban. With a little fine tuning you'll get it running and maybe shifting better. Looking forward to your next video stay safe Wayne.
This thing is sick love how it scares the life out of me like it's gonna blow up and it's a 2000 rpm siiiick
Thanks for the show Wayne 🍻
Open that thing up the sound be knocking cows over.....
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Bro imagine the rotating mass with a flywheel, a flex plate, and a solid alloy extension. Haha. Such a cool thing.
That's how it gets its torque lol
If it was manual you could sidestep the clutch at idle and not stall. What a gem. Shes begging for a 366 and common rail conversion.
Oof…I can’t see that 700R4 lasting long behind that Detroit at all. Especially as it’s likely got the weak stock sun gear (you loose reverse when that breaks… had it happen on a 4.3L powered s10 blazer. Simply put it in reverse and she snapped ). I’d put a 5 speed cast iron gearbox in it. Nv4500 if I recall correctly? Granny low straight cut first gear.
Man.. I don't like two strokes in small vehicles and I'm not a Chevy guy, but this really is pretty nice. It runs pretty quietly for what it is and looks 100% streetable as a daily driver once you get the transmission dialed in. I'm, well... I guess I'm impressed. Nice work.
You need to modify the shift points of trans to shift at a lower rpm, your max engine rpm is what somewhere around 3.5 - 4k? So you need it to shift at 1500 or 2000 rpm, because the trans is built for an engine that does 5000rpm or higher ...
I just tripped across your channel.
Maybe try a camera on the instrument panel and comment as you accelerate, drive, decelerate, stop, etc.
It's impossible to experience the "seat of the pants" feel that you noticed.
Interesting build.
Rusty truck.
I started with a 1997 Dodge 3500 from southern MD peninsula - extremely clean.
I'll see how my progress goes.
Good work and good content though.
Best wishes
Sounds better than a regular diesel. Got serious high revs. Sounds like a mix between a caterpillar and a gm
This Best modification I’ve ever done to any of my vehicles is to get rid of the buzzer/chime
Should have picked the winner that jumped out of the hat!!
I know that sound.... I used to live near the harbor and the tugboats make that exact same sound when they get fired up.
Please keep this one going! I love seeing Detroit engine swap projects. And though it's not a Detroit swap, picking up on the Caddy Diesel project would also be great.
15:15 - 15:45 never thought an ad would be so perfect at this moment tbh
And there is the truck gm should have built but never did.
Gmt400 suburban with a sweet sounding 2 stroke jimmy
Best of both worlds.
This is my dream truck❤
Gotta love heavy things that could swan dive into your teeth at any time! 🤣 arms are quitting just quick get a bolt started!!
💯💯💯
Throw a Turbo 400 transmission in it with the modules for a 6.2L diesel... it will be sweet! ❤
I had that transmission in my 1 ton crew cab and when we swapped it the modules were for a diesel and it shifted hard as hell at a low rpm.
Wanye you ROCK❤
First, let me start by saying, love the channel. But you were killing me Smalls putting in that flywheel, flexplate,adapyer...whatever. Next time, get a couple bolts slightly longer, cut the heads off,put a slot in the end so you can remove them with a screwdriver, and poof studs to help align and assemble. Put your other bolts in,align, and there you go.
Why do it the smart way when you can do it the hard way
and waste good bolts?
hiya wyane hows it been.... love from martin in cali,
" Good enough for who it's for " A good friend of mine ( who passed away three years ago on this coming June 6 at 73 ) said that to me a few years ago before he passed . I never heard that saying here in Texas before . He and his dad ( Texas transplants ) were originally from Missouri ( aka Misery as he called it )
He told me his dad use to say that .
Any chance he was a diesel mechanic named Donny? I knew a great guy who taught me a lot would say that all the time when we worked on loaders at a steel mill. No clue if he's alive or where he's at now.
Well he was a diesel mechanic and did work on a lots of Detroits in the day his last job was a millwright but his name wasn't Donny .
Seems as if torque converters stall is way to high ,however it does fit the old saying GM turns good fuel into noise
our Buddy and volunteer o2S clothing model is a transmission guy.......You should find a thick weighted "diesel" governor from a 6.2 truck and change the wiring in the pan so it locks up after the 1-2 shift and stays locked. will feel a lot more like the Allisons, except none of the smaller GM units with sprags 350 ,400, 700 ,4l60, 4l80,etc will engine brake unless in manual selector positions .Also If my memory is right on all this ancient stuff a 350 governor gear also allows you to manipulate the whole TV/ shift point curve a bit more if needed?
Yea i dunno shit about any of em except a 4l80e.
That’s funny Wayne peanut butter jelly time , keep up the great content
I would question the torque converter and valve body on the shifting, if there ment for a gas engine it won't wanna shift until the diesel runs out of rpm
That made of glass 4L60 wont hold up behind a diesel, it also needs a TPS signal or a TV cable added or adjusted. The governor can be swapped for a diesel style also... good luck my man...
What you need is a diesel torque converter so the transmission will shift and work better
"Good enough for who it's for" Sounds reassuring. Lmfao
You can’t lose the dowels man that will definitely cause issues always put them
Back in the same exact also
That inning in the input shaft is for the torque converter lockup wayno, I gotta rebuild one of those tomorrow ugh
No doubt Wayno you’ll eventually figure it out. It’s a f’kn cool project 🤘🏼
Ditch the automatic all together! That baby was made to be shifted.
Wait a second
Do I know what time it is?!!!
Of course i do
Your content just improved an order of magnitude, DUDE!😎
Always wanted to do this when i still had my k3500
sounds like it needs a different Torque converter.
thank you for the asmr and love this truck. :) i grew up around those engines and diesels in all
my lungs hurt for you seeing the engine run with no doors open
Should put 2 countersunk assembly bolts put in on each side of that spacer to make that a little less fucky. Assemble spacer and flywheel, install cover, screw on flexplate, everything lined up and toit, bust out the peanut butter. That trans just sounds like it's clapped.
This thing looks just like my paps Chevy Suburban we couldn't keep due to the fuel milage and the V8 slowly letting go with it's AC issues and everything.
Ol' two stroker is out to two stroke swap the world ain't he ?
Go Green baby!!
You always amaze me. Cool stuff. You will figure it out.
Is the trans a 700-R4 or a 4L60E? I missed that part. I can help with valve body/TV setup if it's a 700. 4L60E is gonna be done with a laptop/trans controller. I'm in NY, north of Syr. and have 40yrs exp with GM transmissions at my disposal.
Its a 700 and thanks for the offer. Im going to change it to an 80e
@@Ol2Stroker What's your plan on trans control? Transgo does an HD-3 kit that allows no electrics but is manual shift only. Automatic shifts and line rise will require a computer, be it an aftermarket, or one from a 6.2l DB-2 engine. The 80e will be costly and involved but the real way forward.
The 700 is within the power capacity of that engine if you never tow with it. It may be a reasonable option if the truck doesn't deserve the budget for the 80. Happy to help whenever.
@@BillyWillicker i have a 4l85e and a tci controller. Stay tuned!
Wayne, I was thinking if you had some guide studs to help with installing the flywheel until you got it positioned and a bolt started
Should get an installation dowel for those flywheels, or make one.
RIP, 4L60.
This is utter perfection
Reusing the factory lines was the upgrade over a 5 gal can bungied to the grill.
God I love the sound of Detroit Diesel engines.🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
you need a trans with a lower rpm governor to make it shift better and if possible swap a manual
You will figure ‘er out! She has potential for sure! 👍🏻😋 Def a cool setup! I am off to Hudson tomorrow to go to an auction or swap meet with my bud Brandon! Went there last year. Wanted to bid on 3 rare OHV Tecumseh 16 horse engines, yup, 4 choke junk, but these are cool and actually good little motors, but they were taking forever and it was hot that day and I wasn’t quite over a major surgery, AND only had my TiLite everyday chair and it is hilly and rough there, should have brought my Terra Trek all terrain chair, so that wasn’t helping at all, so we bailed. Oh well. 🤣 Anyway, cool vid! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
A 5 speed swap would be sweet in it. Either way it's a bad ass golden retriever hauler!
Getting in a bind like that is how deals get made with the devil
4l80e swap it all day. or pull the engine and swap it into a 3/4 or 1 ton cleaner pick up imo
So if that Truck is too rotted out, then what about putting the motor in the Square body burban you got?
That's my wifes.
@@Ol2Stroker oh ok. Your wife is awesome! 🤣😍
junk yard 4L80e, shift kit, converter out of a 2500hd 6.0/4l80, and a stand alone controller. it would handle the detroit and give you OD.
That is such a sick swap though..don't know who had the time or idea to do this
if the transmission has a vacuum modulator, adjust that (did it to my truck) also, does it burnout? lol, i know it needs the adjustments, but im still curious
Needs an upgrade to the buzzin dozen! 😂
That thing sounds badass but I’m getting old and after awhile it would probably bug me lol
You have it running and driving. That's impressive alone. Worst case, do you swap in a trans that works better with the Detroit engine?
Holy crap man. I almost shut it off from that key beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep.. ffs Wayne.
Give some wayne tuning make it ripp amigo it will fly
We're gonna giver a little tickle
Hay buddy good Job
They called the the 2stroker in high school.. but for different reasons
Wayne at some point are you going to Detroit swap the CADDY?😎
Lol no.
Sounds like my old Gamma Goat I had in the army.
I should've known it was a Detroit Diesel 2 stroke.... I saw the title and thought some mad lad stuck an old Polaris snowmobile engine or something in a Suburban lol.
Dude , make yourself some studs for the flywheel by just cutting the head of at least A bolt it will save you so much struggle .
Otherwise love the struggle and content you are one passionate fellow
ALLRIGHT! MORNING TIMES FELLAS! Wow! I turned it up wayyy too much during the drive.
You gonna be at Macungie this year?
have you ever seen what happens when a flywheel comes loose from a crankshaft (the reason why they make scatter shields) the teeth on the flywheel almost turn into a Saw and can cut through a lot of stuff before it stops, just saying think about what you are building and who is going to be driving it and do you want to be responsible for someone loosing a foot or a leg, the idea is cool but sometimes it might be a good idea to sit back and think about what can happen 🤔
I just hope it never happens cause I have seen what happens when it does and the one I seen the driver got lucky
Good to see it on the road. 👌🏻🤘🏻🇺🇸
That is a janky glorious mess😂. (Those 10 inch bolts or whatever they are would worry the hell outta me if it was me)
A couple leaks? On a Detroit? No way!
