Learning musician here, i have a reference sound system and left volume turned up for your video. Before the video ended I had two calls asking if i new where the hell the Truck is. And why is it so damn loud!? Rofl, thank you for the two stroke symphony! Only better sound then a two stroke diesel is a supercharged two stroke diesel. My ears are happy.
Great video, great sound, I was born on a small dairy farm in Lancashire England, the main road climbed a long hill, a carrier ran a fleet of Commer two strokes, at around five o'clock these Commers could be heard climbing this hill, the sound of the two strokes bouncing off the hill towards the farm half a mile away, happy days.
I’m working on (edit:designing and prototyping) a modern 2 stroke diesel, that doesn’t use a blower and has a wet sump 4-cycle oiling system, there’s a trick to making it work without the engine eating the crankcase oil 😉
dry sump would make it a lot easier to do. you probably already know about Lanz and Marshall horizontal 2-stroke diesels and how they work, but Munktells in Sweden for many years used a 2-stroke diesel using crank scavenge and reed valves like how Lanz and Marshall did but a vertical twin. They make an amazing sound too!
The best movie scene with a screamin Jimmy is the movie “Trucks” by Stephen King, there’s a flat face cab over with a creepy clown face on the grille (toy company truck) with a Detroit in it, the truck is possessed and runs over a bunch of people, the sound of it revving is the most menacing thing ever, it was the first 2 stroke diesel I ever heard, I asked my dad how that semi was revving to what sounded like 7,000 rpm 😂
That sound is incredible. I remember back in the late 70's there was a bloke who had a dark red bogie bedford with the UD engine running up the blue mountains. I think he was from the hills district.
I remember as a kid ,early 70's, a local carrier had an international 190 with a 4 cyl 2 stroke UD in it, straight pipe up the back of the cab, could hear it coming miles away. Good engine he said but broke a few valve bridges on end of rocker arms, only took minutes to change one out. Thank you.
Steve again not disappointed with the content and the information that comes about from from the videos and that engine wow what a sound keep up the great work
@@stevesplacedownunder Hey there, congratulations! One of my earliest memories was hearing and seeing Uclid Mules on a dam project. 26 years later, I heard that sound again when I started work at logging. It was a Tree Farmer C-7 skidder with a 4/53 Detroit. I was taught to drive it and thoroughly enjoyed it. When I first heard it, that memory of the Uclids came right back. That Nissan has a similar sound but its its own.
These Trucks and tractors you have on this channel are the good ol’ days when things sounded awesome and weren’t bogged down with mufflers and all this “save the environment” shit. I love diesels and this blown Nissan 5 cylinder is so unique and sounds absolutely gorgeous. Please don’t ever replace it and keep 3 n 5 Spicer in there as well (it might be awkward, but it gives the truck character) thanks for the channel content and I wish you the best in your endeavors.
The funny thing is that older Vehicles don't fail that often, even if they sit for years! I think there is a video out there that says 2-Stroke and 5 cylinders does not work... well you have the proof right there! Awesome
I've always wondered why there's no 5 cylinder GM Detroit Diesel engines, I guess they thought if a 4 cyl was underpowered you'd jump straight up to a 6 cylinder. They didn't spend the time and effort into designing one. That's why this 2 stroke UD diesel is so unique. Yes old engines, they do last a long time!. Keep them going. 😂
Sounds great! Mercedes 5-cyl turbodiesels also sound good without their muffler, but the non-turbo ones are almost too loud. I removed the muffler from my bus's 6V92, and it now really barks at 1700 RPM, especially when I put the Jakes on. Two-strokes rule, especially when straight-piped.
I have spent a fair bit of time in proximity to 1 of those 2 stroke Nissan motors. I cut wood for a living a LONG time back and 1 of the automated saws had a 180hp Nissan diesel on it that could certainly get up and boogie. Sadly 28 years or so ago when I recorded video of the saws the video cameras were a bit appalling. In the decades between when the video was recorded onto vhs and when I transferred to digital the quality didn't improve on the tape. A bit nostalgic looking back at 1 of these old motors.
Love all the old trucks you have here, they bring back memories from when I was a kid in the 90's. My grandad drove cement trucks around Queensland and also liked working on old machinery. He also liked trains - and now I'm a train driver over in Switzerland. I didn't know that Aussies made some of their own truck cabs. I love the wheel hubs! Looking forward to learning more about these old trucks.

Just discovered this channel. I have a very beautiful acco 1800 with perkins 6.354 diesel. They came out with these engines in South Africa and some with noise engines. I had a problem with my hydraulic/air braking system so last year i bought a acco at a scrapyard that was working with 100% air brakes. Took the front and rear axle off that truck and put it on my truck. Brakes is good now. Only problem is the air compressor is letting some oil through into the air system. Now looking to fit a modern compressor. Parts is not easy to find on these old trucks! I still drive mine on a regular basis to the market with goods
Hi mate I’m glad you found me. Yes they did come out over there and I only thought there were a handful but I’m hearing there were more and more as people comment. The hydraulic brakes are rubbish. Good when working but they don’t work for long before rust and leaks take over. I completely agree with what you did with the air brakes from the other one. It’s what I am doing with the one in the video. They are hard to get cab parts for but the rest is fairly generic stuff available at most parts shops. Depending on what your after of course. Thanks again for having a look mate. All the best

And why is it so damn loud!? Rofl, thank you for the two stroke symphony! Only better sound then a two stroke diesel is a supercharged two stroke diesel. My ears are happy.
Fantastic comment mate this is great. Must be a good sound system. Take care
I am from S Texas and I never saw a truck like this over here. Love the 2 stroke scream. Cheers !
Holly mother lover . That aggressive response blew me off my seat . Wow😳
What a sound. Would love to hear it running though all the gears.
Thank you. You will hear it one day
Should keep that engine when you rebuild it, best sounding engine
Music to the ears Steveo 😁👍🇳🇿
Two stroke spins high! Unmistakable. It looks like a two-stroke motorcycle. ❤
Nice work Steve. It's always a fresh change from a lot of US based channels.
Hi mate thank you. Thanks for watching
Hi mate great stuff. Yes those memories always stand out. I have a few similar also
Talk as much as you want! You have such enjoyable content, it's great!!
Drove a butterbox Acco 6x4 on a farm I worked at years ago repowered by a 4 cylinder UD - Sounded much similar!
Hi mate this is great. Yes it would of been very similar
Will certainly be interesting mate. Would love to see it
That thing sounded angry I love the way them old diesels sound.
Two of my favourite things together, twostroke diesels and five cylinder engines!! Video approved!! :-D
Brilliant mate I’m glad you enjoyed it
The best movie scene with a screamin Jimmy is the movie “Trucks” by Stephen King, there’s a flat face cab over with a creepy clown face on the grille (toy company truck) with a Detroit in it, the truck is possessed and runs over a bunch of people, the sound of it revving is the most menacing thing ever, it was the first 2 stroke diesel I ever heard, I asked my dad how that semi was revving to what sounded like 7,000 rpm 😂
Hi mate, I had to google this movie and I now see what you mean🤣🤣. Fantastic stuff
The 190 I drove had a 4 inch Exhaust with an empty 4 inch muffler it was also opened up a bit and it had a tall diff 84 mph it was a beast.
Like them big machines! Greetings from USA
Hi mate thank you for this. It’s very much appreciated. Greetings to you all the way over there. So many wonderful subscribers from the USA
That sound is incredible.
I remember back in the late 70's there was a bloke who had a dark red bogie bedford with the UD engine running up the blue mountains. I think he was from the hills district.
That sounds unbelievable. 😮
That engine must in decent shape still because fired right up, you fellas get the best trucks down there, we never got stuff like that,
It’s in great order. We have some beautiful trucks here mate.
Thank you.
Hi mate thanks for watching. It would have been extremely noisy yes. I believe there were a lot of these around years ago. Thanks for commenting
Steve again not disappointed with the content and the information that comes about from from the videos and that engine wow what a sound keep up the great work
Thank you Peter. Sorry for late reply too mate. I stopped for a month while I was married and now hard to catch up
@@stevesplacedownunder Hey there, congratulations!
Awesome
No mate that’s right they were built to last.
I certainly do have the proof and there were a lot around back in those days too
I've always wondered why there's no 5 cylinder GM Detroit Diesel engines, I guess they thought if a 4 cyl was underpowered you'd jump straight up to a 6 cylinder.
Magnificent mate thanks for sharing. Yes the bus certainly would sound great I’m sure
Wow...first time I've heard a two stroke diesel amazing cheers.
Thanks Stephen
I have spent a fair bit of time in proximity to 1 of those 2 stroke Nissan motors. I cut wood for a living a LONG time back and 1 of the automated saws had a 180hp Nissan diesel on it that could certainly get up and boogie. Sadly 28 years or so ago when I recorded video of the saws the video cameras were a bit appalling. In the decades between when the video was recorded onto vhs and when I transferred to digital the quality didn't improve on the tape. A bit nostalgic looking back at 1 of these old motors.
Hi Alan. This would of been interesting to have a look at. The old cameras weren’t much good no. I’m sure it did a great job running the saws
Full on race car ! Nice one again Steve and "dad" !
Hi mate. Sorry for late reply. I’m glad it brought back good memories for you. I’m jealous of you driving trains in Switzerland, how amazing that would be to me. There’s plenty more to come mate so stay tuned
Wow, that sounds fantastic
That sounds SWEET !!!! Love to hear it while grabbing gears!!!
So would I. I’m yet to get it driving
Used to drive an ex Pioneer Flxible Clipper coach which was repowered with a 4 cylinder UD two stroke (180 hp) replacing a Deutz (135 hp). An overall far better performer. Yes it had a great note out the exhaust and was frowned on by the constabulary.
UD6 with turbo 2 stroke
I thought the Deutz Fahr being air cooled would had been a way better performer as it had way less parasitic losses.
Your duetz poppet valved loop scavenged 2 stroke aint no mache to the new UD4 300 cubic inch blown turbo uniflow 1400 hp 2 stroke alchohol UD 2 stroke engine the UD@@conmanumber1is over 1800 hp !
would love to see the collection in person bud. and DAMN that thing sounded epic! please dont repower it, sounds so good and would be rare id imagine
Hi Jason thanks for you support mate it’s very much appreciated. Your welcome to have a look. If I repower it, it would be going into another truck anyway mate so all good on that front
Holy Snap!!! I'm going to keep that sound under my mattress for those nights when I get lonely (you know what I mean?)!!! Ha ha!! Another awesome one, Steve!! Well done!
Sorry for late replies Pete. Yes mate how amazing did it sound
Great roar from that engine Steve, lovely idling sound aswell.
Thanks Tim
It definitely sounds quite a bit different than American two-stroke diesels a very unique truck indeed
Thought I seen a Koala runnin out from under the chassis, Mate! lmao!
How can a good bloke help A Proper Good Bloke besides buying merchandise n buy the way keep up the great work love your channel it's awesome
Awesome Loved it Sounds Like a 8V92 Detroit Back Home in Canada eh
Nothing like 2T diesels! Sounds like half a v10 (basically is lol), why not keep it inside, it's a piece of history. Sounds wicked as.
Indeed mate thanks
For those who don't know, this is why Nissan trucks have a badge/emblem with the letters U D. It stands for uniflow diesel!
That’s right mate
I know a fellow in the 70s who repowered a single dive Fiat with one of those two stroke Uds that truck pulled a spread trailer and mainly carted banana s out of north QLD
agree, keep that engine. it's so unique and so dam cool! If you need more power, maybe there's a way to soup it up??
I will keep it like this if I can get hold of an original v8 Cummins one mate indeed
Great video, never knew something like that even existed sounds awesome.. great to see and hear.. 👍
Thank you mate, thanks for watching
Do like the engineering of the gear stick on that one
Love what you do thanks brother from Raleigh North Carolina it’s on my bucket list to visit your beautiful country
Gday Cory thank you mate. It is a beautiful country here and also on mine to visit over there at some stage. Hopefully soon enough I can. Thanks for reaching out mate
I like the International content, weve still got an old Transtar with a tipper on the back working everyday. It almost keeps up with the newer Westernstars and im looking ford to some Louisville content, we used to run 2 Louisville agitators about 20 years ago.
Thank you for the feedback mate. I love those transtars. I have 3 here at the moment, still haven’t got a 4200 though. Maybe one day. Fantastic mate I’m sure the blokes like driving it too. The Ford is now in the shed. Will do a Patreon video of a walk around it a bit later.
Sounds awesome and really unique as most TH-cam channels I see are all American and I've never seen one of these motors on any of them. What a cool old truck
Hi mate thank you. I don’t think many made it to the USA. Which is good to have something different
That thing straight piped would sound great going down the road. (On camera is does sound very similar to a open pipe detroit) Cool little engine ive never heard of here in the US
Fantastic mate thank you
Glad I Found the channel, I used to work on the GM 2strokes for years
Hi mate this is great and I’m glad you liked it. They are a beautiful engine and I have a few of them here. There’s plenty more to come so stay tuned
Hey Steve yes the noise of the two stroke diesels any brand is part of my industrial deafness that and how they rattled the old steel cabs ,but I wouldn't change a thing ,I love the butter box ,my uncle drove a tipper back in the early seventies with a 185 v8 Cummins he called it the bird scarer all noise ,but sweet noise .And no you don't talk to much when you know what your talking about it's never to much ,Thank you for the flash back in time ,oh look forward to LOUIEVILLE going I drove one for a couple of years 903 sweet
Cheers Kym

Thanks Kym and sorry for the late reply. It’s getting harder to keep up mate

Youve got my support and encouragement mate’ sounds awesome!
Fantastic mate thank you 🙏
God that sounds wonderful!! Shame we didn't get those in the USA but that lil thumper sounds almost like a 12v71!!!
Great sounding engine, love the sound of a 2 stroke diesel…
mart.cummins.com/imagelibrary/data/assetfiles/0058689.pdf dry sump oil injected cummins ACE OP 2 stroke!
Glad i watched this, and subscribed, never knew Nissan had 5 cylinder 2 stroke, great stuff, and keep doing it your way
Hi Jim thanks for the subscription. I’m m glad I introduced you to the mighty Nissan mate. There’s plenty more to come for you to enjoy mate
Hell yeah brother cheers from North Carolina🇺🇲 ill keep watchin if u keep posting👍
My grandad drove an 8-wheeler Acco C1900 Butterbox tipper in the early 70's ('71 - '72). I often rode with him in it. V8 Cummins - very loud
Hi mate thanks for watching. Yes they certainly are noisy in those cabs
I love seeing trucks ive never had the pleasure. Thats one awesome 2 stroke beast.
