To me, this film is part of the great trinity of 90s films. TMNT perfectly portrays the 1980s becoming the 1990s and brilliantly portrays most of the action tropes that were popular in the 80s and the tropes that would become popular in the 90s. You picked a great watch, Leo.
The other two are the original Bill and Ted movies, prefecture encapsulating both the lackadaisical attitude of the 90s as well as the massive popularity of weird and strange comedy, and Wayne's World, which showed the very different materialism of the 90s and the new breed of satire and parody of pop culture and reference humor. Not to mention all three (or four) of these movies are just dripping with 90s cheesiness in every scene.
@@ShaDHP23 I can't deny those are all awesome choices. ;) Bill & Ted was a turning-point for me. I loved the humour, but also the sci-fi elements. I watched the first two Bill & Ted movies, and Wayne's World probably way too many times back then. (Betamax deck, FTW) Wayne's World was also the first time I heard linear stereo on a VHS deck at home. It sounds silly now, but it was SO much betteer for music than the crusty old mono soundtrack. (plus it unlocked Pro-Logic a bit later on.) I... haven't seen the new Bill & Ted, though. It feels like it would spoil the memory of the originals. lol
🎶T-U-R-T-L-E POWER! T-U-R-T-L-E POWER! T-U-R-T-L-E POWER! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!🎶 I love this movie so much. It's the perfect blend of the tone of the comics with the humor from the 1988 cartoon. Those suits made by Henson are amazing. This is easily the best TMNT film.
I still remember when this came out. I had turtles everything and it was everywhere. The first and still the best film. Still holds up over 30 years later
I'm surprised how good this is 30 years later. Nostalgia hit me like a tonne of bricks. The fire message from Splinter made me cry. Didn't expect that.
I’ll never forget my mom picking me up at the Boys and Girls Club after school to go see this in the theater. That’s one of my best childhood memories. Does anyone remember the Pizza Hut commercial with the kids playing baseball on the old VHS tape? I think of that song every time I see TMNT.
“Cuz I play Right Field… ya gotta know how to catch, ya gotta know how to throw. Thats why I play in Right Field way out where the dandelions grow” Pizza Hut Making it Great. Yea- i have a dim recollection of that commercial.
Three things to know about this movie. 1. Before Blair Witch Project this movies was the most successful indie movie in America 2. This movie is mostly a combination of the original comics by Eastman and Laird with some elements from the cartoons to make it more kid friendly. 3. Jim Henson work on the turtle suits and and Splinter puppet (the same man who made the Muppets)
Blast from the GD past!!!! I LOVED turtles. I was 8 when the movie came out. My favourite was Raphael, my brothers was Leonardo and my sister for some wierd reason preferred Donatello lol
Great reaction! When I was a baby, in my Mom’s stomach in 1984 (coincidentally the year TMNT comics began), she was walking home from the subway station at night in the snow and slipped on the ice falling to the ground. People literally walked over and around her, some actually trampled her. These were everyday New Yorkers, so yeah the criminals can be pretty bad. Though, I love my city and there are good and great people too. We’re both alive and strong as heck to this day, so it made us tougher.
Cowabunga, this movie is my childhood. I saw it at the movies when I was 12, It contains some elements of the 1987 cartoon (such as the turtles wearing different coloured masks) it more closely follows the 1984 comics (such as splinter and shredder's backstory) hopefully you're up for sequels although they're not as dark in tone as the first movie
This is nostalgic af. I loved TMNT, the movies as well as the animated series. I even had the toys. I clearly remember having the Donatello figure, the turtle with the stick. I remember how cool and unique it felt having that toy.
Hells Yeah! THE best Turtles movie ever made! I saw this in theaters back in the day... mind blown. Still holds up IMO. So much love went into it. The suits are amazing! Cowabunga! RIP Jim Henson.
Even as far as CGI has come still can't beat the magnificence of the old puppeteering skills and designs plus the bonus of actors having stuff/people to interact with
The Turtles are 15 years old. I remember seeing this in theaters when I was around 11 or 12. Remains the best live action Ninja Turtles made! Ninja Turtles 2 isn't bad either if you would like to watch more live action Turtles.
Hi Mr V, great to see you. A bit of joy at the end of a crap day. Hope you haven't been working too hard. Looking forward to this . Hugs to Bella and love to you and your family ❤
Watching the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles age 6 in 1990 blew my mind! I remember going to the principals office in elementary school for trying one of Michelangelo's ninja moves in class! 🤣
This movie is really tactile. Every feels moist and dirty. They aint really done it this way in any TMNT version before or since. Also Raphaels actors screams are on another level, as well as Shredders actors voice. Just something else to those particular performances.
One thing to keep in mind is how new turtles where in 1990. At the time you only had two universes: the mirage comic and the cartoon. Comics in 1984 where a different world and had much smaller groups. From 1984-1986 TMNT was known by a smaller-but dedicated- adult audience. TMNT was R rated-the foot was real people rather then the foot robots. The turtles swore, drank beer and blood flowed in battles and they where not afraid to slice up the foot. So the cartoon version made changes including a color headband change to make it easier for kids to tell them apart as they all wore red originally. So in 1987 the cartoon launched and the toys in 1988. Boom, turtle mania. So in 1989-1990 they decided to walk a fine line between the mirage series and the cartoon in the movie. There is silliness but intense fighting too. And raph dropped a few damns. Parents where not pleased. Many where only aware of the cartoon and the kids and had no idea about the mature comic. Most of the general public had no idea either. Keep all this in mind if you watch part 2. I find it interesting that the mirage series was still going and just as violent as it was from issue 1 but parents didn't complain about that.
generally speaking I'm not 100% sure their ages were ever actually specifically mentioned. However different stories have them at different teenage points. This movie seems to have them at just about 18 years old or very close to that. The new movie that just came (Mutant Mayhem) has them acting closer to the ages of 13 - 14. They seem extrenmely young. But the main general feelinh is that they are roughly about 17 - 19 years old (in human comparison. They may actually BE older because they're are turtles after all.
@@rossrobertson674 Well Yeah the cartoon was made for kids so that makes sense. But the Original created Turtles were for older teen audiences. I mean Spinter trained them to KILL Shredder. That was his main objective. That's a rather "mature" aspect to put in a Satursday morning cartoon. So they made adjustments. such as making the Foot Clan robots and having Splinter actually BE Hamato Yoshi uinstead of just his pet rat.
Always loved TMNT. The late 80s cartoon is amazing also. I still have all my turtle toys, blimp, car etc. Hoping they might be worth something some day lol

a few more fun facts: 36:12. the kid said the warehouse was called the eastman warehouse and it was located on laird island. that was a small nod to kevin eastman and peter laird, the creators of the ninja turtles. and that kid? that's sam rockwell. this was one of his first major movies in his early career. he would go on to win a oscar later in his career. meaning this movie produced a oscar award winning actor. the costume were designed by none other than the legendary jim henson, the creator of the muppets and one of the greatest puppet makers and puppeteers of all time. they created 2 sets of suits for the turtles: one for for acting and speaking parts and one of the action scenes. because of the need to make the suits good as well as making them mobile enough for the stuntmen to do the fighting, henson would say that those suits were the most advanced puppet suits he ever worked on. sadly, this movie would the last project henson work on. he died of toxic system shock 2 months after the movie's release. the movie cost about 18 million to make. it gain a distributor in new line cinema, which was a very small indie movie company at the time. despite mixed reviews, the movie would gross 32 mil on its opening weekend, the second biggest opening for a US film, with the first being "batman". it would go on to gross over 200 mil world wide, becoming the highest grossing independent film ever up to that point and the 9th highest grossing film of 1990.
I discovered one time, that one of the creators of the comic books was doing his dishes, and at one point he stuck his hand in the inside of a cheese grater and thought "This could be a cool gauntlet. One with blades all around it. Matter of fact, it would be cooler if was everywhere!" And after talking with the co-creater, that's how they came up with Shredder!
fun fact: the turtles actually have last names. splinter considered hamato yoshi his father and thus is considered a member of the hamato clan. so splinter's full name is hamato splinter. and the turtles followed suit: hamato mikey, hamato leo, hamato don, and hamato raph.
Im 38 years old and I 1st watched this movie in theaters when I was 5 years old in 1990. This is a rare movie that you love as a kid and grow to love even more as an adult. The fight between the turtles and shredder still gives me goosebumps.
there is one thing that I wanted to say about the Turtles. I've had discussions and some argyuments about WHICH Turtle is (actually) the most talented fighter. The vast Majority split the vote between Leodardo and Raphael. Both sides admit that each on is a bad ass in theior own ways. However I have a point of view that I wanted to share. Imagine for one second that the Turtle with thoe MOST untapped potential and skill is Michealangelo. Keep in mind that he can hang with his brothers toe to toe; and all while being a constant goofball and smart-ass. Imagine for one second if he actually took his martial arts seriously like Leo or Raph?? There's actually a brief glimpse of his skiil in THIS movie. There's a very quick steady frame of him matching Shredder move for move and holding his own, before Shredder makes a move that's too quick for Mikey and he flips Mikey over backwards. None of the others so much as lasted more than two moves. Until Leo holds his own and actually cuts him.
Funny I have the same instinct. My take is, Raph is unmatched in ferocity, Leo is unmatched in technical practice and finesse, but Mikey is a drunken master in-the-making who flies under the radar, disarms with appearances while quietly observing, and then strikes when the enemy least suspects it. While the others have raw strength and intellect, Mikey fights with calm improvisation and intuition, the "wise guy" who's suddenly a wise fighter. Even here as the young-in of the group, all his jokes and tangents mid-fight seem like he's messing around -- but actually, he's tricking the enemy into exhausting themselves on the "easy target", and once he's got them frustrated and out of breathe, he happily one-shots them. And make no mistake, of the four main weapons in the group, nunchaku are the most difficult to wield. By far.
Such a perfect movie from start to finish, there’s no fat in this movie it’s fast paced and action packed, and it has heart. Also greatest villain entrance ever for the shredder reveal, still gives me goosebumps !
This was and still is one of my favorite movies ever. I watched the cartoon forever, played the games and even watched some of the newer turtle series. I read the classic turtles comics that this movie is loosely based on hence the more grown up approach to the turtles in this movie with a dash of the cartoon.
TMNT (1990) is still one of my favorite comic book movies, as well as TMNT movies in general. I know the 1987 cartoons and graphic novel was everyone's first introduction, but it don't get better than this. Michael Bay wishes his Ninja Turtles were this good. Top 5 Best: 1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) 2. Batman vs Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3. TMNT (2007) 4. Turtles Forever 5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Secret of the Ooze Top 5 Worst: 1. To me, this film is part of the great trinity of 90s films. TMNT perfectly portrays the 1980s becoming the 1990s and brilliantly portrays most of the action tropes that were popular in the 80s and the tropes that would become popular in the 90s. You picked a great watch, Leo.
What’s the other two
What would be the rest of the great trinity?
Mrs Doubtfire, and Jumanji, obviously.
@@ShaDHP23 I can't deny those are all awesome choices. ;)
Bill & Ted was a turning-point for me. I loved the humour, but also the sci-fi elements. I watched the first two Bill & Ted movies, and Wayne's World probably way too many times back then.
(Betamax deck, FTW)
Wayne's World was also the first time I heard linear stereo on a VHS deck at home. It sounds silly now, but it was SO much betteer for music than the crusty old mono soundtrack.
(plus it unlocked Pro-Logic a bit later on.)
I... haven't seen the new Bill & Ted, though.
It feels like it would spoil the memory of the originals. lol
🎶T-U-R-T-L-E POWER!
T-U-R-T-L-E POWER!
T-U-R-T-L-E POWER!
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!🎶
I love this movie so much.
It's the perfect blend of the tone of the comics with the humor from the 1988 cartoon.
Those suits made by Henson are amazing.
This is easily the best TMNT film.
GO NINJA
GO NINJA
GO 😂
Wait til he sees Vanilla Ice in rhe sequel
Dude this movie defines me. Thanks for reacting to it your videos always make my day better. Hope you have a good one brother you deserve it.
I was 5 when this came out, the turtles were everything to me for the next few years.
COWABUNGA Leo!! I immediately clicked on this the moment I saw it, I'm soooo glad you liked TMNT, it is one of my favorite movies!
I still remember when this came out. I had turtles everything and it was everywhere. The first and still the best film. Still holds up over 30 years later
indeed dude
I'm surprised how good this is 30 years later. Nostalgia hit me like a tonne of bricks. The fire message from Splinter made me cry. Didn't expect that.
I’ll never forget my mom picking me up at the Boys and Girls Club after school to go see this in the theater. That’s one of my best childhood memories. Does anyone remember the Pizza Hut commercial with the kids playing baseball on the old VHS tape? I think of that song every time I see TMNT.
No but I remember the pizza hut coupon on the back of the ninja turtles 2 NES game 😂
“Cuz I play Right Field… ya gotta know how to catch, ya gotta know how to throw. Thats why I play in Right Field way out where the dandelions grow”
Pizza Hut
Making it Great.
Yea- i have a dim recollection of that commercial.
@@cubaprefect1 Yeah hahaha! You’re a real cultured man.
This movie is a classic from my childhood. You have to watch part two now it’s personally my favorite.
Three things to know about this movie.
1. Before Blair Witch Project this movies was the most successful indie movie in America
2. This movie is mostly a combination of the original comics by Eastman and Laird with some elements from the cartoons to make it more kid friendly.
3. Jim Henson work on the turtle suits and and Splinter puppet (the same man who made the Muppets)
Dude I cracked up when you said “Splinter a dog!!”
This film is so underrated, man. It’s one of my favorites of all time.
Yooo, I freaking love this movie. I always appreciate how well it turned out, even with its low, indie budget.
Blast from the GD past!!!! I LOVED turtles. I was 8 when the movie came out. My favourite was Raphael, my brothers was Leonardo and my sister for some wierd reason preferred Donatello lol
Was a huge ninja turtle fan as a kid had all the toys man love this movie loved the video games !!
I love Mikey, he's so pure and earnest with the world.
Leo you startin to be the undeniable GOAT of this reaction shit bruh, really separatin yoself from the pack. Please keep up the great work 🐐🔥💪🏾💪🏾
Takes me back to when I was a kid. Nostalgic for sure! Thanks Leo
Still the best Turtles movie, over 30 years later. It still holds up, I watch it once a year
Great reaction!
Saw this at 8 years old in the theater....was obsessed with TMNT and watched this on repeat
Hells Yeah! THE best Turtles movie ever made! I saw this in theaters back in the day... mind blown. Still holds up IMO. So much love went into it. The suits are amazing! Cowabunga! RIP Jim Henson.
Damn, that thumbnail is fire! I commented that was my favorite scene in the whole movie on a community tab. Couldn't click fast enough.
I never clicked so fast! My favorite TMNT movie
I live in NYC…lol…it’s not THAT bad
Even as far as CGI has come still can't beat the magnificence of the old puppeteering skills and designs plus the bonus of actors having stuff/people to interact with
This movie blew everyone's mind when it came out. My kids and I loved it and still do. Cowabunga, Leo!!
The guy who puppeted and portrayed Splinter also puppeted and portrayed Elmo on Sesame Street for several years until 2013. His name is Kevin Clash.
36:09 The D-Bag in a dirty white T with the chains is a young Sam Rockwell, I believe. Good Actor.
The Turtles are 15 years old. I remember seeing this in theaters when I was around 11 or 12. Remains the best live action Ninja Turtles made! Ninja Turtles 2 isn't bad either if you would like to watch more live action Turtles.
"COWABUNGA!" was the OG cry for the turtles 😤
I always felt like this movie was like 5 minutes of character development scenes short of being a legitimately great movie.
Saw this theaters as a kid. The place was insane with kids happy as heck watching the turtles come alive.
Hi Mr V, great to see you. A bit of joy at the end of a crap day. Hope you haven't been working too hard. Looking forward to this . Hugs to Bella and love to you and your family ❤
This was my favorite movie as a kid. Had the entire action figure collection :)
Nice movie One of my favorites was a kid
22:35 This cut couldn't be more perfect! 😅😂🤣💀
This is one of my favorites. I watched it in the theater on opening weekend in 1990. Awesome movie.
I got this Christmas morning in 1990 when I was 8, and probably watched 4 times that day. I love this movie so much, great reaction to it 👍
Watching the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles age 6 in 1990 blew my mind! I remember going to the principals office in elementary school for trying one of Michelangelo's ninja moves in class! 🤣
Yes, NY'ker here! You would think with all the fictional heroes lingering in NYC, it'd be the safest place. No, it just brings more drama!!!
This movie is really tactile. Every feels moist and dirty. They aint really done it this way in any TMNT version before or since.
Also Raphaels actors screams are on another level, as well as Shredders actors voice. Just something else to those particular performances.
Did u know one of the martial art actors inside the turtles suit was Keno from Turtles 2 secret of the ooze?
@rossrobertson674 i didnt! I imagine it helped him land that role
@@BradyRamaker definitely
Based on the original cartoons I thought they were like 13-15
@@rossrobertson674 Well Yeah the cartoon was made for kids so that makes sense.
Bro, if you have the stickers or ordered the sticks for the blimp and never put them on the item, they are worth a lot of Ebay
@@jebVlogs556 Sadly they are on the blimp lol believe me I wish I would've known stuff would be worth something now.
@@JordanJMyers Hey if we all knew that, we would have never played with our toys as a child and how sad would that of been.... A few years back I bought 11 sealed first edition 12" DC figurines (Superman, 3 versions of Batman, The Joker, Robin, Harley Quin, Cyborg, Aquaman, Shazam and the flash) and i hate looking at them on the shelf in their boxes as all i want to do now even as an adult is play with them... I bought them to try some stop animation type stuff and when i got them that exact thing you're talking about happened, i started to wonder about could they be worth something in 10...20 years so i haven't opened them and it sucks 😁
When homie kicked the weapon out of April's hand all I can hear is Itsreal85 voice saying "Oh that bih got a fork cuz" 😂😂
@@jamesadvincola9687 facts I can't look at this movie and take Shedder serious without hearing itsreal85 voice calling old boy all the Mexican names even though he's Chinese 🤣
I first watched this in 2000 at around 4 years old & Judith Hoag was my first crush ever, still love this movie to this day
My childhood! Still holds up very good as a movie.
a few more fun facts:
36:12. the kid said the warehouse was called the eastman warehouse and it was located on laird island. that was a small nod to kevin eastman and peter laird, the creators of the ninja turtles.
and that kid? that's sam rockwell. this was one of his first major movies in his early career. he would go on to win a oscar later in his career. meaning this movie produced a oscar award winning actor.
the costume were designed by none other than the legendary jim henson, the creator of the muppets and one of the greatest puppet makers and puppeteers of all time. they created 2 sets of suits for the turtles: one for for acting and speaking parts and one of the action scenes. because of the need to make the suits good as well as making them mobile enough for the stuntmen to do the fighting, henson would say that those suits were the most advanced puppet suits he ever worked on. sadly, this movie would the last project henson work on. he died of toxic system shock 2 months after the movie's release.
the movie cost about 18 million to make. it gain a distributor in new line cinema, which was a very small indie movie company at the time. despite mixed reviews, the movie would gross 32 mil on its opening weekend, the second biggest opening for a US film, with the first being "batman". it would go on to gross over 200 mil world wide, becoming the highest grossing independent film ever up to that point and the 9th highest grossing film of 1990.
Oh my God! The opening music is sooooooo good! This soundtrack helps tell the story as well as the actors.
By far.
Well, Mickey was a tournament winner and never let his brothers forget it.
Such a perfect movie from start to finish, there’s no fat in this movie it’s fast paced and action packed, and it has heart. Also greatest villain entrance ever for the shredder reveal, still gives me goosebumps !
Did you know there is a second movie ? It’s title is something along the lines of “Secrets Of The Ooze”
Love this movie, will always be the best TMNT move imo.
You’ve got to add He Never Died to your watch list.
indeed still the best TMNT movie
Yooooo haven’t watched this in so long I love this movie w reaction
This was and still is one of my favorite movies ever. I watched the cartoon forever, played the games and even watched some of the newer turtle series. I read the classic turtles comics that this movie is loosely based on hence the more grown up approach to the turtles in this movie with a dash of the cartoon.
This was one of my favorite childhood movies
It was you and splinter being dads at the same time 😂😂
I was 11 when this came out. I played the game on my Nintendo, watched the cartoons, and had the action figures. It's still my favorite to this day.
Dude; so happy you’re watching this. Seriously.
Classic early 90’s flick. I was 12 when this came out. But younger brother had this movie on repeat. Acting out the action scenes and dialogue lol
I will forever love this movie!! I just rewatched it yesterday too lol
75% of my time in Chucky Cheese back in the day was spent on the TMNT arcade game 😂
12:33 "They're ugly" is so valid LMAO!!
I like the thumb nail Leo 👌 good stuff
This movie was one of my absolute favorites as a kid
TMNT (1990) is still one of my favorite comic book movies, as well as TMNT movies in general. I know the 1987 cartoons and graphic novel was everyone's first introduction, but it don't get better than this. Michael Bay wishes his Ninja Turtles were this good.

2. Batman vs Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
3. TMNT (2007)
4. Turtles Forever
