Splinter found a book on Renaissance artists in the storm sewer, that's why he chose those names. They were literally some of the only other names he had learned of at that point. 14:09 As to why they're "babysitting" them, I think how it goes is you give them everything, you let them do what they want, and that helps separate the warriors from the criminals. There will be a small percentage of kids who get tired of it and who crave more structure and discipline. They see all these cool ninja looking guys who are all well-disciplined skilled fighters and those few kids want that for themselves. It's worth it for them to lead 19 kids to ruin if it means they find 1 who stands out and eventually becomes an effective soldier.
About the names, He found a book about Renaissance artists hence the names, Leonardo (da Vinci) Michelangelo (Buenarotti) Donatello (Donato di niccolo di betto bardi) and Raphael (di urbino)

My most favorite movie as a kid, the feeling I had standing there in the theater staring at the Movie Poster as it said Coming Soon, I was totally shell shocked!!🐢🤘
This movie had 6 year old me in a chokehold. I remember pretending I was the previously unknown 5th member of the TMNT. Basically acting out self-insert fanfiction before I ever knew it existed. The confusion the adults around me must have felt when they saw me waddle in with a bunched up towel strapped to my back, acting like it was my shell. Telling them to try to hit me with a stick, only for me to turn around and take the hit on my "shell" before yelling, "I love being a turtle!" and running out of the room.
My brother and I saw this as kids together in theaters when it came out. When we left we were literally looking down the sewers on a rainy night to maybe see them. Then went together to see it again for the special 30 year anniversary re-release in 2020. It was a nostalgia overdose in the best way... "Pizza dudes got 30 seconds!" What's funny is, the Domino's delivery guy IS a Turtle out of costume, and so is the guy in the cab. We still do the "pork rind?" joke randomly in whatever situation. Lets all appreciate what these people did without any CGI, far better in my eyes. "OOPS!" The most casual murder by Casey Jones ever 🍕🐢🐢🐢🐢

In most continuities of the TMNT, Splinter was either the pet rat of Hamato Yoshi and got mutated like the turtles or IS Hamato Yoshi and got mutated into a humanoid rat. I don’t know if anyone mentioned it, but the Jim Henson Company worked on the Turtle suits. This was one of, if not the last movie Jim was able to oversee. He was not a fan of the violence.
I admit that I love the scene of Taph's rooftop fight, because it shows how much of a powerhouse he truly was compared to his brothers. In the same amount of time it showed Raph relatively holding his own against what looked to be over 25 people, it showed the three remaining brothers sturggling to do the same. I find it quite telling that the first thing Mikey says when the brothers face the same odds is "We Could Really Use Raph Here Right About Now."
In the movie, the mutagen just makes the animals bigger. But, in the cartoon, Splinter WAS Hamato Yoshi and the mutagen worked by merging whoever was exposed to it by merging them to the animal you had most recently been exposed to. When I saw the Ninja Turtles fighting at the Jay Street station I lost my mind also seeing fellow Brooklyn Martial Artist Michael Jai White in this movie joining the foot clan in this movie was cool too...sooo much nostalgia in this
So the creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird came up with The concept of the TMNT through the parodied several elements popular in superhero comics of the time: the teenagers of New Teen Titans, the mutants of Uncanny X-Men and the ninja skills and training of Daredevil, combined with the comic tradition of funny animals such as Howard the Duck.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is based on the comic book created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. Then became a Role Playing Game "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness" in 1985.
the only thing more nostalgic than the movie itself is the soundtrack. these background songs take me back to my childhood with this movie came out. i am 8 years old every time i hear them. my favorite is the one playing on the rooftop when they high fived saying "Cowabunga". it is called "9.95" by Spunkadelic.
The original mid 80s TMNT comics were kind of a goof on all the popular comics of the time. Frank Miller's Ronin & Daredevil (which had lots of ninja stuff) Teen Titans, X-Men and "The New Mutants" (teen X-Men). Also ninjas in general were having a moment in the early 80s. It all started from one silly drawing of a turtle with nunchaku and a phenomanon was born.
10/10 Extremely Underrated This is easily the most underrated movie in history. Even if you were not a fan of the cartoon show while growing up, you should still definetaly give this a try. This movie contains a kind of humor that the modern movies today cannot produce, even up to this very day i can still watch and love every minute of this classic. I know the idea of a group of 4 turtles who are trained in the art of ninjitsu, and who hang around in the sewers and eat pizza is well....cheesy, but the atmosphere in this movie is dark and serious and is great fun for people of any age. In fact i could not understand most of the jokes when i was a young lad, but as i got older and watched this movie again, i realized that it was even funnier than i remembered. Everybody should take the time to watch this as it is a pure classic, as well everyone should work hard to higher the IMDb score for this movie.
Oh yeah! I saw this in the cinema with my dad and sister when i was 5 so this is super nostalgic! 1:30 the 5th turtle 😂 11:22 Turtle's don't skip leg day 😊
Did I forget to mention I actually met Judith Hoag (who portrayed April, until Paige Turco replaced her) & Cam Clarke (who voiced Leonardo on the short-lived animated series by Fred Wolf Films from 1987-96) 3 months ago in NH?
I wish I could rewind time just so I could see this in theaters again. On a side note I see you girl! I wish I could sub you again just for you wearing my favorite turtle's color 🐢❤
Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird were the creators of the TMNT franchise. The first comic book came out in 1984 and was actually more dark and violent. The comic book was turned into a cartoon series in the late 80's and was so popular that they made the live action movie franchise in the early 90's. But only this one was much more closer in accuracy when it comes to the original comics. Best TMNT movie out of all other sequels and/or variations. The other movie variations I didn't care for. This is by far the best one!
I remember when I was 6 when this came out. All my friends got to go see it but me due to my mom knowing if I did I would start ninja kicking everything in the house, she was right, my friends mom eventually took me and since then we went through alot of glue, tape, apologies and alot of being grounded💯
The series isnt about mainly Raph It varies depending on individual storyline. Some are centered around a specific turtle. Some center around allies of the turtles. And plenty showcase the team as a whole, often struggling against their own inter-team issues. (They are a bunch of teen bro's after all. They dont have it all together.)
first three movies follow this timer line. close to but changed from the cartoon series. After the 3rd TMNT stuff both live and animated follows new time lines with changes. Like Batman, Superman or Spider-Man you'll see other versions of them.
This is just a really good and well done movie. It has aged so well. The later movies get exponentially worse. There were some parent complaints about their use of weapons, so they don't use them in the sequels...
Splinter is the best role model ever and this movie will always be great , the reboots with cgi on theor own arent bad but the original movies are best hands down 😊😊😊
So was mid-90s NYC... But it was beautiful! I was 13 when I went there for three days with my mom and little brother. Man! Adult shops on every corner... I heard a gunshot - not one block from our hotel which was across from Madison Square Garden - later, it turned out a guy gunned down his girlfriend... People were cussing each other out... There were dealers of illegal substances on every corner... Backed up traffic in every lane... Bustling Times Square... New York style Pizza every five feet. Yeah, it was dirty, there was crime (good crimes and bad crimes)... But it was classic New York City. I loved it!
My only fun fact is that in the original comic all the turtles wear red - though the comic is black & white, the color covers depict all the turtles in red. They were given other colors for movies & cartoons to make them easier to tell apart.
Name are after Italian artist. But hell. I'm American with a popular French name. I don't think people always stay in their culture. Actually makes the world a cooler place to venture out. I got a Vietnamese friend. We constantly learning about each other culture.

That nyuk “nyuk” is homage to the 3 Stooges.
I grew up watching all three of these movies on repeat haven't seen a lot of people react to it
in many versions the reannounce artists names come from an art book Splinter just happened to have for one reason or an other.
10/10
Extremely Underrated
This is easily the most underrated movie in history.
It was a lot of fun. And I really got worried for master splinter too,
"Oops, casual murder" -Casey Jones
Suuuuuuuch a fun reaction to an amazing classic❤❤❤❤😂😂🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Oh yeah!
I saw this in the cinema with my dad and sister when i was 5 so this is super nostalgic!
1:30 the 5th turtle 😂
11:22 Turtle's don't skip leg day 😊
Yo they really don’t skip leg day 😂 them calves inspire me
the names ( obviously ) are those of the great thinkers creators and artist of the renaissance
The suits look amazing. Better than the CGI turtles in Bay's films.
Did I forget to mention I actually met Judith Hoag (who portrayed April, until Paige Turco replaced her) & Cam Clarke (who voiced Leonardo on the short-lived animated series by Fred Wolf Films from 1987-96) 3 months ago in NH?
I got to meet the voices of Leo and Mikey, also the suit actor for Raphael in part 2, Keno and Shredder from part 2
Fun fact: The pizza guy was also the guy in the Michelangelo suit.
This is my childhood, I played this so much it drove my mother crazy 🤣
This was THE Turtles movie, the Michael Bay remakes were fine but the original has always been and will always be the best
There is a funny little TH-cam video to compliment this movie. It's called "I was a teenage footclan ninja" it's like a mocumentary interview
'Lairdman island' mentioned near the end is a nod to Eastman & Laird 😉
@@LordVolkov it being the East warehouse on the island is part of that nod
I remember when I was 6 when this came out. All my friends got to go see it but me due to my mom knowing if I did I would start ninja kicking everything in the house, she was right, my friends mom eventually took me and since then we went through alot of glue, tape, apologies and alot of being grounded💯
Let’s Go Legend I Love The Turtles I grew up on 90s Cartoon it’s Goated imo
This was the most successful independent release for nearly a decade. It held that record until The Blair Witch Project came out.
Fun fact the ooze that turned the turtle's also is what made Daredevil blind
The series isnt about mainly Raph
It varies depending on individual storyline.
Some are centered around a specific turtle.
Some center around allies of the turtles.
And plenty showcase the team as a whole, often struggling against their own inter-team issues. (They are a bunch of teen bro's after all. They dont have it all together.)
Cowabunga❗
This movie is so wholesome, then Shredder gets crushed
The Vader sound was hilarious 😂 😂.
first three movies follow this timer line. close to but changed from the cartoon series.
Classic👍
Great movie
NYUCK NYUCK. That's from the Three Stooges.
Why can't i ever dream of Harrison Ford?
33:42 Funny you say that. There's a stand up bit from Donald Glover about this. 😂 It boils down to the joke being about a pipe dream
🤣 oh I love that
Love your weapon, I'm afraid you might hurt yourself 😅. "Toes out"😂.
Splinter is the best role model ever and this movie will always be great , the reboots with cgi on theor own arent bad but the original movies are best hands down 😊😊😊
To be fair this is 1980's seedy NYC. I don't think they would have even if he wore a costume. NY was a seedy and weird place.
Very true 😂
One of the best decisions ever made for the Ninja Turtles outside of the original comics
Where did you get that giant Peep?! 😲
Walmart! During Easter 💕
"Nyuk nyuk" is a reference to Curly from The Three Stooges
Oh lmao I was so confused hahaha
Why is it that a real human being needed to actually be TOLD this?
IN THOSE DAYS A PIZZA FROM DOMINOS YOOOO YEAH WHOLE PIE LOOK AT THE SLICES
Name are after Italian artist. But hell. I'm American with a popular French name. I don't think people always stay in their culture. Actually makes the world a cooler place to venture out. I got a Vietnamese friend. We constantly learning about each other culture.
TMNT- '90 and 91, TMNT 2016 lol, TMNT Mutant Mayhem 2023
