    Thanks for this video, I'm late to the party....I recently became appointed to a leadership role of the Mountain bike specialty unit for my volunteer Search And Rescue group....and I really wanted to put an Aveon Cycloboost to the test as a SAR tool. After finding out I cannot directly order an Aveon/Cycloboost trailer, I'm beginning to research creating my own homegrown version, and I am encouragement by the success of the Ridekick! Thank You!

    Thanks for a great review bro! And your love for people is really being displayed where you put time and effort into theese answers :) It is a really cool product and I might have bought one if I lived in the US and not in Norway. I wish you good luck and all the best!

      Hey, thank you so much! That's one of the nicest comments I've received. I do these videos and the website because I like people and appreciate the idea of being healthy, out in the community and living sustainably. I want to spend my working time in a way that reflects my values and I'm glad that it has helped you :)
      I know the Ridekick team very well so if you want one shipped to Norway I bet we could help you out! I have already asked about the cost and it is between $160 and $300 depending on how quickly you need it. That was the shipping price was for the UK but I believe that Norway would be similar.

    This is the best type of e-bike adjustment I've seen so far because every bike has wheels so you don't have to think how to modify your bike in case it's a bit different plus everyone has their cargo if they want to use a bike in the everydays, maybe a bobile phone, I pad, etc to charge. The absolute perfection would be a tricycle with rear suspension plus electric ride assistance, but that is probably for a future generation of bikes when the old two wheeled ones get worn out. The other brilliant device is HIDDEN POWER, a tiny one for foldable bikes. Maybe one day we get the two combined.

    They are talking about lighter batteries for the Ridekick. Something that has not been discussed is you NEED weight in the trailer. If it is too light the drive wheel will not get traction and try to spin.

    Good idea to combine assist in a trailer. Pulling a trailer is exactly when you will need some assist.

    Nice one. I could tell by the smile on your face after your ride that you liked it, gave you that tiny boost of adrenalin. I'm moving near Woodland Hills in La (from Greece) huge move. I have a great foldable electric bike here in Athens which has helped me so much. But I'm not bringing it with me. Can you suggest a shop for me in that area. Thanks btw I've watched at least 20 of your video reviews so far. good job :)

      Like, an electric trailer that would push a car? That's a unique idea, very interesting... but probably very expensive since you'd need a whole lot of batteries. Hmm... gets my gears turning for sure

    Would it be possible to use this in unison with an already electric bike for more power plus as a back up power for an electric bike? I already have an electric bike but am wanting a back-up power.

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, you could add this to an ebike to extend your range (use it after the ebike battery is exhausted). It might offer more power if you used both at once (for climbing or hauling stuff) but it will not increase your speed as both systems would be limited to 20mph. It might also deplete your regular electric bike battery faster since you're adding weight and friction with a trailer. RideKick is going through restructuring so this unit can only be found used at the moment but you could make your own with a Burly trailer like this: amzn.to/1jk9ym5 and a hub motor kit in a 20" wheel like one of these: electricbikereview.com/category/e-bikekit/ (get the 350w geared or 500w gearless in a 20 inch wheel size and mount it on the left wheel of the trailer, put the battery in the back and wire the throttle up to the front handle bar on your bike.)

    I tried watching the whole thing but get to the point, LOL is that the source of your electric assist? What is that just power itself so it doesn't drain your motor on your e-bike? The video was not clear at all. Or maybe I just didn't understand.

    • @toddrunfeldt6636
      @toddrunfeldt6636 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right when he sees the trailer for the first time, he points out the location of the motor and the drive chain. Then, they install a trigger speed control. If it was just aux battery, there would be no need for a speed control. The bike would already have one. He even remarks about the way the trailer pushes him, but does not jackknife.

    Hey great review. Just discovered your channel. Love your reviews. Very informative and entertaining and fair. IMO this is the future of transportation. Much much less environmental impact vs any motorized vehicle. For most people the power and range will serve their needs most of the time. Then just rent a car/van for those few occasions when you need it. Its the future :D

      @ElectricBikeReview  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with you completely, having lived in cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles and Austin I've used Car2Go and other easy sharing/rental programs that work perfectly with ebikes. The Ridekick is an affordable, convenient solution but the broader ebike movement is very cool and I've become partial to purpose built rides because I use assist at all times now for increased distance. Thanks for the compliments on my channel, always happy to hear that people are enjoying it. I really do strive to be fair and transparent about when I make mistakes or why I have an opinion on something :)

    Are those the same pair of "Oakley Jawbones" you have now? Also, is that your personal bicycle, (the red one)?

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ha! Yeah, they are the exact same ones! I try to take really good care of my stuff :P
      That is indeed my personal bicycle... all the way from ~2012. The Ridekick rep was in Mountain View, CA where I used to live and I got to play with one of their early builds! Was a lot of fun, I loved it... and of course I loved my little red bike (which I had completely tricked out with bar ends and flipped the stem and my favorite white Magnesium pedals).
      Do you have a favorite bike or some favorite glasses too!

    • @Taggerung
      @Taggerung 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don' have favorite glasses, (since I buy them in bulk for $1 a piece, and get rid of them when they break). My bike, however, is a different story. I have a black w/yellow stripes, "Fuji Nevada 29er" and, as it's only my 2nd bike, (as I have recently gotten back into riding) I REALLY enjoy it. I AM thinking of trying to find a way to make it lighter, as I am on pavement 95% of my time (I think I would be classified as an 'urban' rider) and its weight is rather ungainly, especially since I now have a geared rear-drive (soon to be rear Direct-Drive) hub on my bike, along with a 48v battery from "E-BikeKit.com", who have MUCH better customer service, than "BionX"... that's one reason I went with THEM. Anyhow, do you know of any ways to make it lighter; aside from getting another bike? Also, I may change my mind, and get a "Ridekick", so could you please give me an idea of the price range?

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Taggerung Cool! I really wanted to meetup with the guys from E-BikeKit.com at Interbike last year but we just missed each other... I haven't reviewed their stuff but they do have good sales and seem to be very responsive in terms of customer support :)
      I have actually done a review of the Ridekick and live very close to their factory! Wonderful people and a very neat product. I love that it's easy to switch from one bike to another (you can even get an extra attachment point and throttle to make it super-fast) and that it stores goods, is less expensive and even has a USB charger inside. They have a new model that is a children's trailer that I really like as well (for more space and power). Here's the Ridekick review and it cost's ~$700 for the basic battery design electricbikereview.com/ridekick/power-trailer/

    • @Taggerung
      @Taggerung 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I see the lithium battery version costs about the same as the E-BikeKit I bought. Still, as lithium batteries are usually lighter, I MAY want a lead acid battery, since they are usually heavier (to have the same effect as putting weight in the back of a pickup during winter.) Also, you might want to review some of E-BikeKit.com's wares. While they don't have any pedelac, or pedal-assist modes (or regenerative braking) that I know of right now, I believe they're working on those things, but like I said, their customer service is the main reason I chose them over "BionX", so give them a try, you might be surprised!

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Taggerung Cool, I agree with your thoughts on the heavier Lead acid battery on the Ridekick, it's also easier to recycle and more environmentally and geopolitically friendly.
      I've got E-BikeKit on my list, just finishing up with the other reviews I've already shot and planning a trip to visit them later this year :)

    if the top opened away from the bike, you could leave it open to carry more stuff. it could have straps to keep it in an open position, with a net that wraps around to turn it into a large basket.

  • @tarstarkusz
    @tarstarkusz 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    These things are dangerous and I don't see how they can get this to market through the lawyers. You have 2 basic problems here:
    1) The drive wheel wants to push the bar upwards just like a motorcycle wants to pop a wheelie. Not only do you have all that upward pressure, but it has leverage on top of the natural opposite force. The longer that bar is, the more upward force it will put on your axle. Not only that, but it's only applying force to one side of the axle. So unless you have vertical dropouts, this could easily shift the wheel out of alignment in horizontal dropouts.
    2) The trailer is always trying to push your forwards, straight forward. So if you hit the throttle while the trailer is not perfectly aligned behind you, like on a turn, this thing is going to be pushing up and laterally and becomes more and more extreme as the turn is more and more sharp. This thing needs to come stock with a laser system to make sure no torque is applied to the wheel if the motor is not perfectly aligned behind you. This thing is outright dangerous and should never be sold.

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I appreciate your concern about danger, for me it worked very well. The founder of Ridekick was an engineer at Hewlett Packard and is caring, smart and very thorough so he won my trust. I realize the design seems unintuitive at first but I think it's a solid product overall.

    • @tarstarkusz
      @tarstarkusz 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ElectricBikeReview.com Did you hit the throttle while turning? I think the design is bad, especially since it's not possible to put a cutoff switch in the brake levers. In addition to all of the problems I listed below, if you put the second battery in it, this thing weighs 60lbs. That means when you try to stop, even assuming you let the throttle go in time (I mean a panic stop), you have a 60lb trailer, which is a significant fraction of the weight of you and your bike pushing you. There is also potential for long term rim damage from the lateral force put on the rim if the throttle is on while you are turning. In a straight line this isn't that bad of an idea and would be better with an automatic cutoff in braking, but it could knock you over on a turn. This would be very good on a 3 wheeled trike.

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      tarstarkusz Yeah, I throttled around corners and stuff. The trailer isn't that heavy or powerful so I didn't get the feeling that it would push the back of my bike out or even push me forward if I locked the brakes or put a foot down... it just provides a nice little boost once the bike is going. Regarding stopping, I used to take my sister around in a Burley Trailer when I was younger and she weighed over 60 lbs with the trailer frame and wheels etc. and it did impact stopping but still worked fine. Just like trucks pull trailers and have to consider the extra weight it's similar with bicycles. I appreciate your concerns about the Ridekick and agree that anytime someone modifies a bike there will be some impact. For me it has performed surprisingly well and the price is right, I think it's creative and thoughtfully designed to the point that it feels comfortable and hasn't caused an accident or worn out my equipment (like my brakes or rims) beyond what would be considered normal. It sounds like you might be a fan of something more complete and purpose built like this ebike: electricbikereview.com/eg/athens-250/

    • @tarstarkusz
      @tarstarkusz 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +G's... I actually posted some questions about this thing on bikeforums and the replies I got were kind of varied with some saying it's not really something to worry about to people having some of the same concerns.

      It's a neat system! Unfortunately production has paused for 2014 while the team updates their supply chain and makes some business changes. I'm told they should come back in 2015 but in the mean time you could buy a Burley trailer and add a kit like this electricbikereview.com/category/e-bikekit/ to make your own basic push trailer :)

    • @ExclusiveLM
      @ExclusiveLM 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +arbonac ........ I agree. This will never take off for 3 reasons. 1st, torque. You won't be able to go up a hill, especially an adult with this. 2nd, it looks like training wheels. 3rd, price. for $200 less a rear wheel electric conversion is better and will be quicker with way more torque going up a hill. It's honorable that an American is trying to sell this product. But, for the reasons I mention, I doubt it will be a hit product.

    • @timparziale8833
      @timparziale8833 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ExclusiveLM The trailers Manufacturer have tons of torque. Much more than the Ride Kick or those cheap China made rear wheel hub motors. My trailers push you up steeper hills than hub motors. You can also change the sprocket for more speed or torque. They go 25-30mph right out of the box without mods. You can modify them to do 40mph.

    • @timparziale8833
      @timparziale8833 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ExclusiveLM Btw, they sold thousands of those Ride Kick trailers. So it did take off but they are crappy. People have sent me theirs to make more powerful. So I pulled the motor and controller, sprocket and chain and installed 1500watt motor system with heavier duty motorcycle chain.

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      That depends, by keeping the motor and battery off the main bike frame it reduces weight and improves balance. The extra weight on the trailer helps it maintain traction. The neat thing about this kit is that it can convert almost any bike to electric but then when you take it off, the bike is normal again :) here are a bunch of ebikes with motors on them if that's what you're interested in: electricbikereview.com/tag/bikes/
