I was invited to be part of Vsauce3's new series 'Could You Survive the Movies?' and my episode came out today, it was one of the coolest things I have ever done! Link -> th-cam.com/video/RVFCCSQJymI/w-d-xo.html
I JUST watched that before I came to check out your new video (I was already subscribed to your channel) and was very excited to see you in their video! I hope you have more opportunities to work with them and other science creators.
I really admire your channel, I'm not that well-versed in mathematics, but I still watch your videos because your channel feels like such a peaceful haven, and you explain mathematics in a way that makes it so easy to understand! Thank you so much for putting content like this out into the world :)
With respect, I dare say that she is VERY well-versed in mathematics. Mainstream thought of mathematics seems to coincide with the ideal of perfectionism, but, even nature's numbers and patterns aren't to "humanity's" snobbish perfectionism.
I once said in a maths class that conic sections were the greatest things ever in the history of geometry, but my teacher told me I was indulging in hyperbolæ.
Finally…a new Bob Ross-style math lesson. I love how you make these math topics understandable through interesting analogies and great drawings. Keep up the good work!
"We may be mathematicians today but we're not to serious that we can't include a little bit of magic. " I agree, no one should be to serious to not have a little magic mushroom in their day.
Ahh the old common courtesy of correcting someone’s work. Excellent display of empathy. These are the little examples before the AI take over the world and “correct” everything.

I was involved with this when satellite Tv Came in. A project group during the summer holidays were building a mold for a dish and although not my project, a collegue and I went into the city center where a polytechnic/University Technician used a parabolic equation on the new CAD system then produced a code tape for a CNC machine from the CAD design and machined a curved plate that when revolved formed the dish shape. Lots of sand and cement shovelling took place to fill the mold box with the revolving plate in the middle. Reflective material is layered onto the finished mold before fibreglass resin. Lovely mathematics Toby and fantastic entrance you look wonderful !
This reminded me of one of my maths teachers back in high school. For whatever reason, he couldn't say the word parabola without an audible sharp intake of breath beforehand. It was a source of much amusement for the class.
i like that teaching progression, where you let the audience imagine the circle. then you showcase a slightly more complicated shape of the elipse, before moving on to the parabola
Wow!! Great teaching style. If Maths was taught like this, most of students would find it pretty interesting and beautiful just like literature or other topics.
Thanks for another great video! The best explanation I ever saw of "conics" was given by an optical technician at ANU's RSAA - his explanation of how to get circles, ellipses, parabolas and hyperbolas from slicing a cone was better than anything I ever heard or saw at school or university. It is smoky, isn't it - that easterly bringing the smoke from the fires near Braidwood and the coast. And we're looking down the barrel of 42 degrees C (108 degrees F) on Saturday!!!
This video reminded me of the architect who twice created glass buidings wth rather curved/parabolic shapes....and bbbboyyyy did they cause trouble! Between the shape and the glass, sunlight was reflected so much, that, in the case of the building in Nevada, the buildling created something nicknamed a '"Death Ray' The focused sunlight was so hot it would singe people's hair, etc. Also, the buidling in the U.K. bascially melted someone's car! it's amazing what kind of quailites a shape can confer! I was glad that this curved video reminded me of that architect! I can't remember if that was directly mentioned in this video, but either way, I'm glad it led me to it!
I really love this videos, out of nowhere I suddenly lern something or understand better the math behind it... And as a student this really helps me ! Thank you ! And greetings from Mexico!

I only watched these vids for Rapunzel's voice. I could never understand what she was talking about though. Then I realized that after her voice had put me to sleep that I was subconsciously absorbing the stuff she was teaching. Math doesn't make me sad anymore and I now know how to spell physics.
Nice pine cones. Bob Ross was more into evergreen happy trees as I remember... :) Those parabolic forms reminds me the shapes sometimesdisplayed on my spectrum analyzer at work! :) Nice work!
Even though I've seen diagrams of the Parabola before, your video made me think about the Parabola in this manner (given in the other comment) because of its easy pleasant atmosphere.
real life scene when I was in Std XII....(1980) My teacher said today we are going to study Parabola... a naughty student asked from the back bench :Kyaa bola?..(what you said?)....in Hindi making it sound a bit more notorious and rude enough for the teacher...good humor of the teacher on the day saved the student...
Since the mid- 80’s I was struggling with that topic. I started hating Math... Now I finally understood it and , well, because of you I started to like Mathematics!
My only quibble was that it wasn't completely clear, when you were doing the mushroom hill, what was equidistant from what. Maybe if you'd had a ruler and just done one measurement with it, that would have made things a bit clearer?
I was amazed they still make good ol fashion chalk. Excellent vid. Now where were you Toby when they constructed that building in London that melted that guy's Jaguar? Had they taken your math tutorial, that might not have happened :D

It would not be hyperbolic to say that this video is among the best quick, intuitive introductions to parabolas and other conic sections.
