Dell XPS 720 - BTX Motherboard swap, modifications, and using the oldest Xeon CPU in Windows 11!

- Today we look at the doomed BTX based gaming monster released by Dell in 2007. While this is an amazing chassis, the BTX form factor left users with a small amount of upgrade headroom. Now almost 20 years later, let's take a look at that strange form factor, as well as how I swapped another BTX board into this case without issues. We can also see how to remove the annoying "No temperature sensor found, Press F1 to continue" message. I will also show off how the OLDEST compatible Intel Xeon processor works on Windows 11! Enjoy!

My right ear would have loved this
i thought my speakers weren't working for a a moment lol
I think its an issue with youtube, I am using P30 pro and everything sounds normal until I upload. Not sure why!
@@dom80TA Your phone is mono only that's why it's fine.
Was not aware my ear phone speaker was this loud
This computer consumes more power then my clothes dryer.. Used to fix these too, simple machine but not worth the cost to run them thats for sure.
my left ear enjoyed that
I'm happy for it
Great video, however, you seem to have the "mono becomes left channel" issue. If that isn't too much of an issue, you can try the following:
Open your audio track in Audacity/Tenacity/Edison.
Clone the track, merge down to Stereo.
Export to your format of choice.
This way, you should avoid the issue of your videos potentially coming out as mono on YT. Hope that helps!
Thank you! Thats exactly what I did lol. Had to export the audio and make a second "stereo" channel. It has to do with my P30 Pro being... strange lol. Appreciate the help, may have found a fix while recording
i bought a red one for 300 dollars on ebay becuase i had been looking for one for years and could never find one locally and i love the look of them so paying top dollar for one was a no brainer for me. mines got duel 9600GT's in SLI and some kind of quad core xtreame in it i use it for xp gaming.
Nice system! Are those the original gpu as well?
@@dom80TA yeah that’s what dell originally optioned them with a single 9600gt or 2 in sli
I just bout one for around $280 on eBay also red, always thought it was the best looking case dell ever made. I’m still trying to decide if I want to keep it original or do the atx mod.
i wanna look into perhaps what kills these 720 boards,
I know what you mean, its strange because both of the dead ones I had would start up normally, no beep codes ect just no display. Dell panel would display "other error" message, not helpful. I would think chipset failure but even a reflow of chipset did not help
probably bad capacitors or mosfets
@@gamecuber6 only one way to find out
*So I bought one*
*Insert top gear music here*
@@lukedavis436....may i ask how much did it cost?
@@gamecuber6 well I haven't bought one yet, but that's the theory of it all anyway the only way to experiment is to own one
The ones on eBay at the moment are too expensive for me to justify I shall await one to cross my path, be it H2C or otherwise
I had the same OneCloud freeze on Win 10 64bits too some time even the keyboard and mouse are shut down but the screen freezes on that app/icon too only hard reset or shutdown works... It appears few months ago ( some MS update screwed something with Explorer Indexing and OneDrive which is installed but never used...) 😢🤔🤔😱🤬🤯🤯🤯
Funny you would say that! I have been seeing it appear on systems with newer installs of Win 11. Also I keep uninstalling it on my own system and it keeps coming back! lol
@@dom80TA and is not constantly... randomly more likely... It has something to do with some processes or sub-proceses of Explorer and OneDrive which remain hanging especially when copy paste, moves files also over network... Is a hypothesis...
@@garfield12344 Strange... sometimes I have explorer crash just navigating my large photo folders and such. Kind of a pain because it closes any windows that are copying files as well. Gotta love it
i have a xps 710 . it still works but needs a side panel it also has 8gb ram :)
Thats awesome what cpu are you running?
720 boards break if you look at them the wrong way 😀, every one ive looked at has had a vrm problem i think outa about 10 ive been able to fix 2 with changing mosfets but i think on the others it could of been PCH related. great XPS bud.
Thank you! Sadly from what I hear too its a pretty common problem!
Had this exact PC. After my 3rd motherboard failure, it was out of warranty. What a POS. Because realistic upgrades would cost more than a new PC, I took a sledge hammer to it. It felt really good. Fuck Dell. Never bought another product from them.
Really sorry to hear it, it seems like it was a way too common issue for these things. You would have had basically 0 upgrade options for it as well. Ive seen real awful qc with newer Dell stuff too, laptops especially
That cpu will soon not be able to run the latest Windows 11 updates due to lacking pop and sse 4 extensions so make sure you dont install that windows 11 update or your going to get into a boot loop and will need to re install the older windows 11 version that worked before that update.
I've heard this as well, what I really wonder if we will see bootloop and then sys recovery will kick in and remove that update or part of it. Time will tell!
Mix with mono sound please. Stereo is never needed.
I think its an issue with youtube, I am using P30 pro and everything sounds normal until I upload. Not sure why! I use Windows movie maker to edit as well...
stereo wasn't an option i presume?
i switched to mac for about 10 years (age 20-30) and I can say i fully regret it and coming back to PC, I feel like using a mac made me dumber. hard to describe it, but even though they used intel most of the time I had them, I had no idea where to start buying a PC again.. like intel 9300h like wtf does that mean? is that like a pentium 9? lol took me a while to figure out what was going on. With apple, you get like 3 options with slightly different clock speeds... you never needed to know what was going on outside of that, because it wouldn't matter.
Its seductive, I get it... and everything "just works" ....... buuuuuuuut "everything" has never been more limiting than in this case.
I guess I stopped caring about what was outside that "walled garden"
yea, so that's my long way of saying: dang, that's a nice case! I dont remember seeing it when it was new. ATX? could I sleeper build this thing?
I agree with you, I just serviced a friends iMac with a 2tb ssd, had to remove the entire screen panel to get any access. Do not suggest Apple products at all PC wise, love my old phones+ipods though lol. From a simpler time! I know a lot of folks do ATX mods to the old G5 mac pro WS but those arent my thing really lol. Not much into the fabrication work anymore unless its a little bracket or tiny intricate piece
