I love my Vostoks. I have an Omega, several Seikos, Orients etc. My go to watch is always the Vostok. Sure, not the most accurate but easy to regulate. The bezel tightens up under pressure. Been tested to 800 meters before failing. Been frozen in ice and boiled for a minute. No effect on the watch. Next on my list is the Vostok Zissou. The one Bill Murray wears in life aquatic.
Vostoks have also been in space.
For me it's not a matter of price. They're just great but sure, an acquired taste.

Is that Zissou model still in production or will you have to hunt down a preowned model?

Unlike a Speedmaster it can go to space and it can go under water. I have no idea why they put 200 meters water resistance on them, there are loads of people that have taken them to crazy depths in pressure tests. Someoen guy pressure tested one and it broke at 820 meters. They are good to 500 meters at least.
Not to mention the Poljot Strela was the first watch in space and the first watch in a space walk, as usual everyone forgets that.

I am one of the people who love the Vostok watches mainly for the "retro-futuristic" look many of them have. They have that 60's sci-fi look to them that i adore and I am more than willing to accept their flaws and odd choices of finishing just to get a smile on my face whenever i look down on my wrist to check the (approximate) time! #WCW

I feel like the wobbly crown is a misunderstood feature on Vostoks (though I could be completely wrong). It makes more sense when you think of it as a way to negate the need for the spring loaded crown/stem found in most threaded crown watches. When the crown is screwed out, there are small spines that mesh the crown and the stem together (within the crown itself) allowing the user to turn the stem. When the crown is pushed in for rethreading, this disengages the splines (hence the wobble), allowing the crown to thread into the case without turning the stem simultaneously. Essentially, aside from the setting position, the stem never moves from the winding position, and can be made as a single piece, as opposed to two pieces with a tiny spring that require the user to physically press the crown in while threading, potentially imparting strain on the keyless works.
Again, I could be wrong, but from an engineering and manufacturing perspective this seems to make more sense.
Awesome video Guy, keep it up! I have a couple of Vostoks and think they're cool, durable, fun watches for what they are.

Wow, Just Blue Fish replies to every comment! Hats off. This was an objective review even though I don't necessarily agree (admitted Vostok fan). It should be noted that it is mandatory by International law to mod them. Seriously, many models are cartoonish and kitschy. Changing the bracelet makes a huge difference. I just can't pull the trigger on The Dude but there are many other tasteful models. And yes, there is a big difference between Vostok and Vostok Europe. #wcw

I love how the Amphibia's case back uses water pressure to make the watch more resistant. It symbolizes to me something about becoming stronger when the going gets tought. And I love the scuba dude. But I will concede that the strap is the weakest link which makes the sponsorship by Wrist Candy Watch so perfect. #WCW

Alright Guy first of all I love your t-shirt! Second of all, I used to have a 710 Amphibia but ended up selling it because it was too chunky for me. I have watched quite a few videos concerning the Vostok Amphibia watches. Mine is the sniper face version that has been mildly modded. It has a stainless crown, a stainless and slightly smaller bezel, and the bracelet is the woven Vostok factory one. I have no complaints at all about this watch. Does it keep perfect time? Nope. Do I care so much that I can`t move the hands once in a while? Nope. The case is the highly polished one, and this is a darned good looking watch that is comfortable to wear, and that`s all I care about.

  • @selwenn
    @selwenn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Well if you don't like the Scuba dude, Amphibia has lot of differents designs out there with similar specs .. not mentioning the mods where you can create you very own specific watch. I personally do not like the polished finishes, which you can easily 'modify' by stratching it with the rought edge of a sponge. The only downside in my opininon is the plexi 'crystal' which sratches easily.. but theres also a solution for that : polish... And you can also regulate the accuracy fairly easily... If you can't or dont want to afford a swiss diver this is definately a good a option for you, considerin this watch is more unique in the western world than any of the swiss made watches

Bent stems are a huge issue... Try working with cold hands in snow, ice or while zeroing time in with dive buddies in and out of cold water. This is why the Rolex dive masters have the oversized bumpers which are crude and make the watch heavy. So the Vostok has a genius solution respect to the engineers
As for the accuracy, how many of you are going to use an atomic clock to set the second hand dead on zero ? And If you are not using an atomic clock to set time it is almost guaranteed that the clock or watch you are setting the time from is already off by maybe a minute or 2 if not more so -20 plus 60 Does not play a single roll over 24 hours for mission or diving for which this watch was designed. Average dive session is less than an hour 😊

I've ordered one a few days ago with a few mods and I can't wait to get my hands on it. These watches are not for everyone's taste and I bought mine, because I want a tough and rugged outdoor/field beater watch while most people want a super cool flashy looking watchs that are going to draw a lot of attention, which is ok. I'm also a Seiko and Grand Seiko fan and I own 3 Seikos and one spring drive GS, but I wouldn't want to use any of them as a beater watch. G-shocks are probably ever better option as beaters, but i'm not really a fan of battery powered watches even though some look really nice. #WCW

I’ve just ordered my third Amphibia. I love them, they have a unique history and a 200 metre plus dive for around £60 they are incredible value. I don’t like the metal strap but the rubber one isn’t that bad. I don’t go for the models with the date, I have a collection and wearing it every two weeks or so and moving the date on would be painful. I go for the rubber strap models or swap out for a NATO. I’ve modded the bezel on two of them. I see someone wearing a Vostok and I know they are a watch man. Struggling to see 60% reflected in the comments here.

Can't wait to mod the watch & wear it.
To each their own & all but I see this watch as a solid blue collar watch amongst a white collar watch collectors world & that's exactly what I'm looking for.
You go ahead & keep your Rolex & expensive watches in your home safe where you take them out to look at them once a year. Maybe you'll wear them on that one occasion & be so careful to not scratch it that you're obsessed over that the entire time.
I'll be wearing my Vostok watch & won't hesitate to work on my car, shower & use the fuckin watch I've bought just like it was built for.
In other words show me an expensive watch wearer & I'll show you a man who's not doing anything manly whatsoever. Might as well be wearing white gloves lol.
Show me as Vostok wearer & I'll show you a man who won't cry if he's gotta pick up a tool & fix some shit.

I have 120 case design which I bought from meranom, it was running a little fast for my liking so I decided to regulate it myself. When worn the watch is now accurate to within 1 second a day, when laid flat for approximately 8 hours (bedtime) it gains 7 seconds. I replaced the bezel for a fixed one and put the watch on a nice leather strap- it’s one of my favourite watches now!👍🇬🇧

The Vostok Amphibia is fun and got me into movement regulation due to the wide accuracy spec range. The slow beat train of 19800 per hour is so cool you can see each tick per second. Most vintage dive watches before 1980 had a bidirectional bezel due to the one way bezel patent with the blancpain fifty fathoms. Good thing patents expire but these are like new old stock vintage watches. Same 60s design still made today.

How can a 50 buck watch be 'polarizing' for heaven's sake?
A lot of people spend more on a strap.
    As a beater automatic that's
    good for 200m, has real
    history behind it, is 'funky-fun'
    and charming in it's idiosyncratic
    ways, it's a no-brainer.
By the way, why did you sound so
fed up about it; you were obviously
putting it on, as I've seen better acting at my grandson's Nativity Play.

  • @notyourtypicalwatchreview2563

So, let me get this straight: The bezel is pretty useless as a dive timer, the crown is weird, there’s no quick set, the accuracy is laughable, the lume is a joke, the power reserve is minuscule, and the bracelet sucks. The only reason to get one is if you get it for free.

This video is stupid. How can you ask people to poll on a watch or any item for that matter if they haven't experienced it? Do you poll everything you review? I doubt it unless you're subjective instead of objective.

  • @scottsj4625

There is a following of this watch but it is not really anything worth buying. If you are on a tight budget it might be good. The bracelet needs to be swapped out. I would not really wear it. I saw a watchmaker take one of these apart and yes it can be very good with water resistance far more than they are rated being pressure tested near 800 meters before it broke. That is amazing but not my kind of watch, also if you are expecting any power reserve you have to wind it up or it only lasts a couple of hours. This is from watching several reviews and the timekeeping is also noted not accurate. Maybe you got lucky but what I saw it loses or gains 2 minutes a day and that is not good at all.

Nice, honest review. I agree that vostoks aren't for everyone, but I do love them. They've got a really interesting story behind them, as well as really fun designs. However, my favorite feature is they're very easy to mod, even for beginners - I swap out the bezels on mine every week for a new look.
But all in all, great review and thanks for the video! #WCW

Thanks for an interesting take on the Vostok Amphibia. I have several, and I love them! Yes, they have their shortcomings like the bezel construction, non-quick date set and hair munching bracelets (which luckily are easy to change), but at the same time they also deliver a ton of personality due to their quirkiness and "vintage straight from the factory" style.

Thanks for a good and onest review!
I bought my Amphibia in november last year and I’ve had it around my wrist since then.
After a little fiddeling with the adjustment...thing..(?) inside, it runs allmost perfect! (About 30 sec ahead per week.)
It’s rugged and the crystal has allready got som scratches but i LOVE IT!
I modded it with a bezel from Seiko and a Zulu-strap and I choosed to make a homemade kind of satin finish on the case to get rid of the cheap bling factor...

I have two , the 420 scuba dude and the 090 non date version with brushed case. Not had any issues with either . I suppose it depends where you buy them from too. As said by other posters , the factory bracelets are terrible. My 420 is on a bond NATO and my 090 with the crosshair bezel is on my Casio Duro plastic strap.
Maybe I've been lucky with both of mine , I like them and the first one was pretty much my introduction to mechanical watches for £43. Good fair review 👍 #wcw
