- Can you imagine what it would be like to have a reporter onboard with a camera during the sinking of the Titanic? In 1955, Walter Cronkite did just that, interviewing key characters such as Captain Smith, Bruce Ismay and First Officer Murdoch. In a documentary style that pre-dated the publication of Walter Lord's book "A Night to Remember" by six months, it is a fascinating blend of fictional dramatisation and historical accuracy.
Broadcast: 22 May 1955
Season 3, episode 38
I just checked the description. This show was broadcasted on my birthday decades before I was born.
Pretty cool program! I have this entire episode on A DVD!! Sort of dramitized, of course, and the ship looks nothing like Titanic! With navigational hazards in the North Atlantic being what they were in 1912 and the non-existence of television, onewonders how 'live' on-the-scene interviews could possibly be done... and why the busy crew and passengers alike would even waste the time. Of course, a familiar face is seen in this episode. Actor Hayden Rourke would go on to play Dr. Alfred Bellows in the memorable TV series, "I Dream of Jeannie!"
Other episodes were about the fall of Troy, the assassination of Julius Caesar and the death of Socrates - long before television was invented! I don't think you are supposed to believe it is real, but it is interesting to explore the 'what if' of asking principal characters in historical events about what is going on.
