I just like your videos in general no matter what they are. Im like the only person in my family that reads so it’s nice having books to relate to through your videos. And a video like this doesn’t discourage reading these books bc I read the Last mrs Parrish after you said you didn’t like the ending of how the husband is and I love that book I couldn’t put it down.

I think you are right on the money with One by One. I love Ruth Ware but this book was so boring. It was obvious who the evil person was from the very beginning. The business stuff didn't bother me but her endless descriptions of nothing....five pages about a certain ski route. I was yelling at the book "we got it, there's snow". The end, so disappointing. Just a big old NO.

I very much agree with you about Stephen King - the real horror in some of his novels is the male gaze. I had auto bought One By One so I will probably still read it, luckily I won’t be going into it with very high expectations. I also work in Investments so maybe I will be more interested in that side of the story than the average person - 🤞

  • @noway4996
    @noway4996 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

THANK YOU! I also DNF'd Credence. I was so confused by Chandler's vlog where she read this because when she talked about that first garage scene and she said Caleb stopped when she told him to stop but NO HE DIDN'T. He only stopped because Noah pulled him off of Tiernan. Also her relationship with her uncle was disgusting. One minute he tells her she needs a parental figure more than a sexual partner and then the next she's losing her virginity to him? Nope, couldn't do it. It's sad how some people let shit slide in romance novels that they would never tolerate in real life.

I've tried to read Stephen King quite a lot in the past and I can NOT with how he writes and sexualizes every single woman, no matter how old. I just can NOT with his books. That's one of those things I can't see past to see any merit with his books at all. ANY of his books. Just a deal breaker for me. So I feel vindicated to see him on this list 😆

I'm so glad you said that King is problematic! I honestly think that a lot about his books, and at first I thought it was because I was reading books from the eighties, but even in The Institute I just found his depiction of the local cop right at the start to be so off-putting that I had to stop reading. Every time I mention this though, other readers are always like "no, no, he's not problematic, he's not racist, that's just how he writes" or whatever and they brush it off. I thought maybe it was just me who felt that way.

Hahahah I literally wrote yesterday that I’m so excited for The Book Troop because we have similar tastes in thrillers but I enjoyed your first three mentions here 😂 although I totally get why someone wouldn’t enjoy them. Going in to One by One with extremely low expectations due to hearing awful reviews for it really helped! I DNF’d three books this year - trying to DNF more but I don’t like it. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin - just think I’m too old to like this one now, total shame. Little White Lies by Jennifer Lynn Barnes - liked The Inheritance Games but this one was so boring, I just didn’t care. And The Last Final Girl by Stephen Graham Jones - so sad but I hated the format of this book so much I couldn’t get past the first forty pages!

All of these seem to be hits with everyone else though, so I think that they just maybe weren’t for me. Some of my faves weren’t exactly highly rated either, so I guess some things are just a matter of taste.

Two spring to mind. One was self-pubbed, and I try to cut those some slack, but this was just awful. It was like a completely unedited NaNoWriMo brain dump. Which is a perfectly valid approach to a first draft, but you don't slap an ISBN on it and toss it into the market.
The other one was The Stars Are Legion by Kameron Hurley. I know a lot of people who think it's wonderful, but I absolutely hated this book. If it hadn't been required reading for the Sirens challenge, I would have DNFed it. I still wish I had. I'd survived Monstress and thought I could handle the body horror, but this was some next-level stuff. And the plot...I still have zero idea what actually happened. I never even figured out who the characters were. I guess it's "edgy"?

I'm not sure Doctor Sleep is one of my worst this year but it didn't live up to the expectations I had and it felt like The Shining would have been better off without a sequel. The last few pages did redeem some of what I disliked about it. I do think Gerald's Game may be the worst Stephen King book I read this year though if I had to pick one out of the 3 I read this year by him. If I were doing a worst books video I'd probably have to put Gerald's Game by Stephen King, The Case for Christ by Lee Strobel, Gallows Hill by Lois Duncan, She Died Famous by Kyle Rutkin and Dirty Letters by Penelope Ward and Vi Keeland on it

Ruth Ware is so hit or miss for me. I’m no longer going to purchase hard covers of hers without getting reviews first- especially yours. Going to read one by one since I have it tho.

On the theme of the mother in law trope, one of my worst books this year was The Daughter In Law by Nina Manning - so fucking boring, predictable, and full of plot holes, and with awful characters.

The worse book I read this year was Riley Sager, The last time I lied. It was the first book by this author I read and I heard so much hype that I was expecting it to be good. I found a handful of things that didn’t make sense and realized that it was almost 2 weeks ago I started reading it and I wasn’t enjoying any of it. I put it to the side about 65% through.

The most disappointing books I read this year are One by One (couldn't finish, hated it for the same reasons you did), The Starless Sea (couldn't finish, the writing and idea are beautiful, but the characters sit for at least 200 pages and do NOTHING and the constant switching of stories in every other chapter was too jarring for me), You Are Not Alone (I still don't get why the women needed to mess with the main character because she was too stupid to notice the things they thought she did), and The Last, although that was just faulty marketing on their part because the book was fine (it's pitched as The Shining meets And Then There Were None but only one person dies in the book and it's before the book even starts. It's The Road but less bleak, it's not a murder mystery at all).

I felt the same about Mr. Mercedes, gave up at not even close to finishing. I had only read a few of King's older classic hits when I recently read 11.22.63 and loved it, it was refreshingly different from classic King that I looked up more of his relatively recent works, came upon the Bill Hodges Trilogy and gave Mr. Mercedes a try, especially for the Holly Gibney character from The outsider TV series. I regretted picking up Mr. M very quickly and ditched the book. Even from the limited amount of King I have read, I find the 'male perspective' sexualization of women in many/most of his books disturbing. That could be one of many reasons why Pet Cemetery and 11.22.63 are my only 2 favs by King, as both of those don't have that kind of characters or portrayal at all. And doctor sleep, I have only heard negatives about it.

Survivor song was so boring! I had it on audio and it even took me forever to finish it that way. The beginning was promising, but it was downhill from there.

I don’t think it’s ever too critical to have your own response to a book. Sometimes it’s the timing. When you tried to read it may affect how into it. Also, some of King’s books are ahead of his time in spots and then with the times he wrote it in other things. So for instance, The Stand is amazingly ahead when discussing pandemics but the dated in racial or religious comments. So I do think looking at when something was written and target audience is helpful in that case. I was the same way with You. I have the unpopular opinion of hating the book but realized it is because I generally don’t like the stalker book from that perspective. Good reviews!

I have only been able to finish one King book and it was a serial novel at the time. It was The Green Mile. I usually give up about a third of the way through when I am totally creeped out and bored at the same time. He is not for me.

The only book I read here is Doctor Sleep and I enjoyed it! I also want to read Mr Mercedes just because I want to read every King book, but your description is not making me want to read it at the same time cause I hate when a character talks about women like that, it's so annoying. And I'm intrigued about Never Have I Ever! Some of the worst books I read this year (but I know you and many others love them) are The One by John Marrs and The Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix.

Great video. I haven't read any of the books on the list. Or have them on the tbr. So, yay me! 😆 There is only one book I hated this year. That's Layla by Colleen Hoover. It was even worse than Verity and I didn't think that would be possible. In know. I know. Unpopular opinion. But, it was so bland in its prose and lacked any sort of suspense. I guessed the twist at chapter 4. There is zero character development and the way it attempts at redeeming an abuser is gross. The only positives are that it was easy to get through because the story is void of any depth (just over 2 hours) and I got it via KU during a free trial period. I think I am officially done with this author. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I didn't end up hating One by One, but I ranked it as one of my most over-hyped/ disappointing read of 2020, and totally agree on that ridiculous last act!
The worst read of 2020 for me is My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing-unpopular opinion but there are just way too many plot holes in the name of thrills for me.

Okay, is it weird that I find The Shining so boring? I mean, it wasn't scary at all and the only two times I wasn't bored out of my mind by it, was the first time Danny went to the room 217 and the time when he first talked to Dick. Other than these, I think the rest of it was waste of time, with all due respect though

There were a few creepy scenes that he did really effectively, I thought, but the rest of it really didn't do much for me. It felt very '70s, and I hated the '70s the first time around. I don't want reminders.
