  • Robert Porter “Bob” McKimson (Oct. 1910 - Sept. 1977) was a Golden Age director, writer and animator most famous for his contributions to the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons. While he’s more well-known for his directorial work, he was considered by his peers to be the top animator at the Warner Bros studio.
Bob McKimson got his start at the Romer Gray Studio working on the Binko the Cub shorts. He then moved to Walt Disney Productions (inbetweening for Dick Lundy) before making his way to the Harman-Ising Studio at Warner Bros. When producer Leon Schlesinger set up his own shop for Warner Bros, Bob and his brothers Charles and Tom quickly joined. Bob McKimson, quickly advancing up the ranks as head animator, would find himself animating for most of the Looney Tunes directors such as Friz Freleng, Frank Tashlin, Tex Avery, Chuck Jones and Bob Clampett. After Tashlin left WB for the final time in 1944, McKimson got the chance to start directing cartoons, inheriting Tashlin’s unit. McKimson would direct Looney Tunes cartoons even to the closure of the studio in 1963. Throughout the 1960s-70s, McKimson would work for UPA and DePatie-Freleng directing several theatricals, TV series and specials as well as doing freelance commercial work.
McKimson’s animation favors long character acting with extra attention being placed on hand posture and lip sync. His animation utilizes deep perspective making the characters feel more three-dimensional and lifelike. He animated his scenes straight-ahead and could do close to 50-80ft of animation a week.

I feel like you're missing one of his greatest achievements.
Single-handedly animating a very realistic Uncle Sam for Chuck Jones' 1939 short Old Glory.

Year old comment but did he really animate the whole short himself? Usually there would only be one animator credited on wb cartoons until 1945 but that didn’t mean they animated the whole short themselves

The OP said he animated scenes of Uncle Sam by himself. That could actually be doable. But I don't think he animated every scene of Uncle Sam in that cartoon.

@smashfan9549 McKimson animated almost everything except for a select few scenes by Ken Harris (Porky reciting the pledge of alliance at the end of the cartoon)

Don't forget that McKimson animated three shorts. Two shorts are 'The Hole Idea' and 'Dime to Retire' from 1955 and 'Too hop to 'Handle from 1956.

This is awesome! No errors that I see, and it’s all the iconic McKimson scenes! On top of that you got some nice jams! Excellent job and I cannot wait to see more in the future!

Note: McKimson worked for Disney before Romer Gray not after. Lundy became a animator at Disney in March 1930 which probably meant McKimson had a lower rank prior to his promotion

I re-watched my copy of Cracked Ice from one of the Looney Tunes Gold Collections to try and find out why the WC Fields pig caricature was breaking the fourth wall. Any idea who he was talking to? My guess is it's the rivalry between Fields and ventriloquist dummy Charlie McCarthy.
