I had one of these, drove it from 1996 to 2006. It had done 550.000 km on the clock when the engine was so tired that I had a 200Tdi transplanted. I also liked the steering wheel and no pas. Fantastic vehicle.
I'm actually sad to see it go! I took my s2a with a 2.5td 19j down the M55 the other day, over to Goosnargh for a run. It did 60mph fine, scary though.
Bang and rattle wagon! Fuel injection pumps etc are like a black art unto themselves. I had my pump overhauled and it was several hundred pounds. Turned out the pump wasn't the faulty part but the timing was off a touch due to the bonehead who didn't locktight the job correctly.

Hey Mike hope you’ve had a nice weekend. Mike I’ve been given the chance to buy a replacement engine for my Land Rover 90 it’s an NA what’s on offer is a 19j engine could you give me your honest opinion on these engines is there anything to look ou for? I just want to make sure I’m making the right decision before I get it fitted I’ve heard of cracked pistons with these engines just want to know your thoughts
Thomas - they must be one of the worst engines of all time - a temporary fix to get a turbo on the market before the 200Tdi was launched Cracked heads, pistons, blocks, overheating etc Do yourself a favour and find a 200tdi to drop in there
@@BritannicaRestorations hey Mike thanks for the reply much appreciated I’ve been looking at the 200 tdi’s and they are so expensive ranging between £1,200 to £2,500. @@BritannicaRestorations that’s bonkers! I’m going to hold out this engines running fine I’ll hold out and save my money for 200 thanks Mike keep up the good work
@BritannicaRestorations I've had a local firm to refurbishment my Injectors and the misfire is still there I'll check the exhaust manifold temps and swap the Injectors if 1 is down on temp
If the injectors are OK then it can only be valve clearances or low compression on one cylinder Get the engine running and crack off one injector pipe at a time to hear the difference in engine sound
Great video! My 2.5NA Landy tends to run a bit cold, would you advise adding a viscous fan unit to them? I’ve seen the electric fans but don’t really want to put one of those on.
I’ve got exactly the same engine in mine and when it’s cold it’s smokes and knocks for a good 20 mins blue smoke I’ve done what you did on here with the injectors and they all seem to be working fine wondering if there’s a glow plug down and it’s burning unburnt fuel
@@BritannicaRestorations I don’t understand because it starts fine 10-15 seconds of heat and it goes I’m going to run a Lead off the battery later disconnect them and see if they spark then I’ll know if there’s any gone down
Remind me, does N/A stand for Normally Asthmatic or Not Arsed? Hard to believe the poor British military had to put up with this engines lack of performance well into the 90's .
Military and NGO all around the world had no problems with it. Max speed for a platoon is only 70 km/h anyway. The army even has a rally racing team with Defenders but they have the turbo engine. 😉
@@mrcvry if they had no problems it's strange that they eventually went tdi in the Wolf (though again the military avoided the then current td5 due to electronics) , land rover had already gone tdi in civilian Defenders , only the British military's penny pinching and dislike of complication (my god, a turbo charger . . .) kept the n/a, I own and have driven many n/a defenders, it's a good plodder, easy to fix but is very slow, show it a hill and it's finished. I'd hate to think what a full 110 is like, most I've driven are done at 60mph and take a good while to get there, absolute liability trying to join a motorway or dual carriageway, It's like driving something from the 50's. I put up with mine for years before going tdi, best thing I ever did to it.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 These things are so amazing I love mine alot and I always start in 2nd gear because the 1st gear is toooooo short and I wonder why people think it's not mine it must belong to my old man!
I would not start these in 2nd gear. 2nd always goes first on these boxes (LT77 and R380) as generally it is used the most. By starting in 2nd you are now asking an already weak synchro to take speed/momentum of the motion shafts after you depress the clutch and slow it to 0rpm to match the speed of the output shaft - as the the dog gears need to engage 2nd onto the 3rd motion. You also end up needing to drag that clutch that little bit more so the whole thing has a negative impact. Fit a Disco Lt230 if you don't like the low first.

My 1985 ex military 90 is just the same, a bit of smoke on start up, not a lot of speed up hill, but it loves to go down! 😁😁 Rob (UK).
Well done .
It's most satisfying to see the completion of such an interesting project

I was hoping for a run to the burger joint and the bottle shop. Still great scenery. Oh, and great work on the engine.
No plates or insurance - getting into autumn soon so will dig out the S1for a drive

top tip! Remove a plug lead if you have a petrol engine to the lower the power and raise the vibration experience!
how is it that you run it high rpm after cold start? Maybe you can tell us smt about warming up diesel engines and the myths about it
Hi Mike did you find what was causing the misfire ? Ive got the same fault on my 2.5na
Injectors were not balanced - 2 were lower pressure than the others

I've checked the valve clearances and done a compression test cylinders 123 are 395psi cyl no 4 250psi. Is it worth doing a leak down test on no 4
Fresh gravel?

Might make a difference - hard to say as in winter the 2.5 NA is not putting enough heat into the cooling system
