At a time when so many sequels & reboots are some of the worst movies of the whole series being made, it's so amazing to see Toho literally make the BEST of the series. to top the original is just unbelievable!
The H-bomb testing technically does "help" Godzilla in terms of mutating his genes to create his regeneration ability and his atomic breath. But at the same time it completely incinerates his skin and gives it that dark charred look. His skin was originally meant to replicate the appearance of radiation burns from actual victims of the atomic bombs. So in a way Godzilla always has an aspect of pain, agony, and vengeance towards the human race. At least in more serious interpretations like this movie and the original from 1954.
Yes, Godzilla is able to instantly regenerate. I saw this ability in an older Toho Godzilla movie called, “Godzilla 2000“, this gene is called regenerator G1. It is a mutated gene due to repeated bombings with H bomb, which has given him his atomic breath and regenerative powers. Also at the end of the movie notice on Noriko’s neck there is a black spot that appears and starts to grow. This is Godzilla regenerator cells that were blasted off of Godzilla when he released his atomic breath and onto Noriko which is the only reason Noriko survived and healed so quickly from receiving such a terminal blast that would’ve killed her otherwise. How this will affect Noriko in the future is anyone’s guess.
I love the foreshadowing in this film. The dead radiated deep sea fish rising to the surface too fast that their stomachs explode out of their mouths due to the pressure changes. They attempt to do the same thing to Godzilla by using the force of nature against him where tanks and battleships seemingly have failed. But Godzilla is also a force of nature. Born of nuclear energy. Godzilla is the unknown element. -OG
Is it radiation tho? they where dying like that before godzilla was irradiated and the people of Odo island knew that dead deepsea fish meant it coming ashore, its probably more that fish trying to get away from godzilla and some endup going up and dying.
Great catch on how small Godzilla looks at the beginning. He certainly is. It's when people are lighting off nukes and Godzilla is absorbing the radiation, that he gets bigger. Great reaction video.
"Would he have been blamed for that?" Yes. She lost all of her children, and many Japanese people thought Japan lost because a bunch of soldiers more or less quit. I.e. Cowardly. @@Letstuneinthat was a great reaction video. Goos editing too. But you didn't see the godzilla cells moving on noriko's neck. You looked away on that scene. That's why she survived.
The cool thing with Godzilla is he can be a good guy or bad guy depending on the interpretation. Godzilla being a villain here is because Minus One was a remake of the original 1954 film where he was presented as a tragic villain because he was angry at humanity for mutating him with their atomic testings. The radiation now made him in constant pain/anger. So reality is he was a victim similar to people who were hit with radiation from the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After the original film, he over time became an anti-hero fighting other monsters which the Hollywood films portray him as. Sure Minus One has better written characters but the American films is more about the monsters as the ones we care for. ^^

You missed the mark on Noriko's neck...is it a happy ending? Many people do miss it because of the emotional impact of the scene, but it's quite important. Also, go back and change your captions to the 'English' and not 'English [CC]' version...the last line of the movie hits MUCH harder in the original translation vs. the Netflix translation 🙂 Don't feel bad about being teary-eyed at the end, this movie, good theater/cinema should have its audience feel something and this movie does so and does it VERY well!

This was a "sort of" reboot/remake of the original from 1954. If you never saw the original (not the Americanized version with Raymond Burr), but the original with subtitles, do it. It's like this one where he's a force of nature, and not a good guy smashing other monsters or aliens. It was the later films that got... silly. I love 'em all, but the original is SOOOOO different from all the sequels and reboots and reimaginings, except this one. Next to the original, this was the best Godzilla film, ever. And a good argument that this is even better...
8:35 idk if it was said but the devestation there was due to the american fire bombings of tokyo, most of the city was wooden at that time and the bombings just set tokyo ablaze. As for his blame japanese at the time were all about honor. Being a kamakazi was the a huge honor and were expected to give their lives for japan. So to people seeing him “chicken out” was disgraceful in all senses of the word
Yes he would have been blamed. After WW2 surviving kamikaze pilots were shunned in society, blamed for losing the war, and treated like garbage. Not much unlike the survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki! Survivors of those bombings got treated like second class citizens too! Sumiko giving them the white rice was a HUGE deal. Food was hard to come by in Japan in the months after the war. They were nearly in a famine. White rice was more valuable than gold. And it looks like you missed what was going on with Noriko's neck at the end of the movie! Go back and look!
Thanks you! I loved to hear these details! I did not know what that was on her neck , but I do now. I’m really looking forward to seeing them continue this story! Thanks for the insightful comment :)
I'm glad you liked it. I'm surprised though you watched it in color. I rented it 2 weeks ago on TH-cam movies, and I thought I chose the color version but watched the B/W. I think it was like watching the original when I was a kid.
Noriko might have been infected with G-cells (black mark on her neck) and survived the blast because of its regenerative power. Godzilla Minus One (2023) won 8 Japanese Academy Awards (including Best Picture) and 1 US Academy Award (for Best Visual Effects). Suggestion. Watch Shin Godzilla (2016). The movie highlighted the (government’s) bureaucratic failures in dealing with the triple disasters (earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear reactor meltdown) in 2011. Shin Godzilla (2016) won 7 Japanese Academy Awards (including Best Picture and Best Director).
For those that don't know. One kamikaze pilot is enough to disrupt an entire aircraft carrier, meaning NO planes can take off from it. To say that he couldn't have stopped the air raid isn't necessarily true, tho obviously it's not his fault it happened.
The mark on her neck at the hospital is a Godzilla cell. It's probably why she survived the blast. But to what end? Will she mutate? Are there other victims who similarly contracted the Godzilla cell? I've also heard that the tattoo on her neck is a symbol for Mothra. Perhaps Mothra will be featured in the next movie?? -OG

Just shows you you can make a good movie for less than 20mill this was 15 to 18 mill to make and one marvel tv show or movie is like a 100mil and the aren’t good
Did you missed increasing dark spot on Noriko's neck at the last scene?
I actually saw it, but was so confused on what that was, I didn’t comment on it. Just went into the wrap up. But I’m so glad to know now!! Makes the movie even better. Also, I need a sequel!
Oppenheimer next
6:58 that's what they all say.
Some movie suggestions - "Scream", "I Know What You Did Last Summer".
watch the green mile
take godzilla out of this movie, and it would still hve been a decent movie..
take godzilla out of a hollywood monsterverse godzilla movie, you would have nothing at all...
首のアザ見落としてますか?
Nobody cares, dude
👊🏻
I couldn’t get past the first few minutes. You have everything muffled. 😕
good reactions .
I watched this with the subtitles and dubbed. The subtitled version was more impactful. The scenes hit harder. The linecyou misse was that the kids wanted another war.

Ghosts of underwater decoy team: are we a joke to you?
Hoping that the Decoy team was fine after the High Toss 😂

Best Godzilla movie in a while. Now do the polar opposite and review Godzilla’s Revenge lol.
Pure cinema.
You NEEEEEED to do Shin Godzila after this!
I would actually love that!!
@Letstunegodzilla minus one won 8 Japan academy awards including best picture. Also shin godzilla won 7 japan academy awards including best picture too.
This Godzilla is a baby
Was a baby
understand honer. pls
最後のシーン。アキコは明らかにノリコの異変に気づいている。
I recommend watching the incredibles 1-2 and american pie 1-4
This was a "sort of" reboot/remake of the original from 1954. If you never saw the original (not the Americanized version with Raymond Burr), but the original with subtitles, do it. It's like this one where he's a force of nature, and not a good guy smashing other monsters or aliens. It was the later films that got... silly. I love 'em all, but the original is SOOOOO different from all the sequels and reboots and reimaginings, except this one. Next to the original, this was the best Godzilla film, ever. And a good argument that this is even better...
your voice is very sweety.
oh, I'm sorry.
You are a fan but still missed it in the theater...😏
8:35 idk if it was said but the devestation there was due to the american fire bombings of tokyo, most of the city was wooden at that time and the bombings just set tokyo ablaze. As for his blame japanese at the time were all about honor. Being a kamakazi was the a huge honor and were expected to give their lives for japan. So to people seeing him “chicken out” was disgraceful in all senses of the word
You missed it. She is not who she was.
Movie of the decade.
No Brainier ❤
Also the cheapest cost godzilla effect yet
It sucks that I have to wait til Friday to watch your reaction.
Best reaction to this movie I've seen... love Love LOVE this movie
-OG
