Outstanding. BTW, those looking for a good Rite in the rain book, get the Tactical version (980t). Has rulers printed on the front and back covers (front inches, back Centimeters). This will make your scales much more precise.
We Marines grunts have multiple methods for all aspects of land navigation. One of the things we pride ourselves in. If you like this check out the 5 degree rule for range estimation.
They're reall good field books. If you get an RIR book I suggest getting one with green, grey or tan paper. The colored paper is an eye saver in bright sun.

Loved this one too. Back in Boy Scouts... many years ago... before maps were waterproof... I would carry a pencil and protractor for my map and do the same. Its important to note that keeping the pace count, or being able to identify your location on the topo-map is key when drawing your angles. If you do magnetic declination or not, keep doing the same each time. Don't let one person read the map then switch to another person. You could, (and I have) end up being off by quite a distance depending on the methods used. We just put little pencil ticks on the map and used the protractor to accomplish the same thing. You can also plan at each way point the "return azimuth" for younger people that get tired faster as we did. Basic geometry and the same principle on a vertical scale and you can tell the height of objects, width of rivers and even latitude on the planet Earth given the degree of angle towards the North Star or Southern Cross (without a GPS signal).
Old land/engineering surveyors (ahem) would call this a graphical solution of coordinates by northings and eastings. ;) I worked up an example on a notebook page using my slide rule. It was a fun exercise and took me back a few decades when I reduced surveying notes by hand. Well done, sir.

I watched this years ago, it wasn’t until I took the Pathfinder class in 2021 that I was able to understand navigation. Watching this video after that experience, I have a solid understanding of how to do this now.
I learned this working to get a merit badge in the Boy Scouts many, many years ago. We did it with a pencil and notepad, keeping track of bearings and waypoints. It has kept us from getting lost whenever we leave base to forage or explore. Never thought to make an actual map in the dirt. Great idea. Very good video. Thanks and keep up the good teaching.

I just rewatched this video and the “lightbulb” popped on!!! Not as difficult as I once thought. Now to test my meager knowledge and put the principle I have into action at test myself. I know the method works but I still need to make sure I own the skill. Could be challenging to have some one else do the route with same pace count and leave markers for the next azimuth and some point in the course a tag saying head back to base.camp. That way you are still following a land nav course and can use the PAUL method to get back. Very cool sir thank you.
Hi Corporal. I took a navigation course through a local store a couple of years ago. We had to use the Silva compass provided by the instructor, even if we had a different brand. Just found your series and it’s so much better. Learned more in 1 video than in the day long class earlier. Yours is the only detailed instruction on the Suunto compass I have found. I know that took a long time to film. Thank you

I've been watching your videos every chance I can the past few days and came across this one. Really cool how that works and surprised the military didn't teach me this. Also it was very strange to not see you salute at the end.
Thank you very much for this very informative video. I will definitely test and train the PAUL method. In the past I have been amazed how exactly you can measure distances with Ranger Beads. On longer marches I tested this with a GPS handheld. I came up with a deviation of less than 100 meters and that on a distance of 30 kilometers. This is already very accurate for Ranger Beads (my opinion). The PAUL method is so easy to use that you can't get lost :) Again, thank you very much for this very well explained video. Good introduction to P.A.U.L. 1 issue I had the last time I used this method was an accurate measuring device. I believe this is very important. I learned my lesson I was 75 meter from my base camp good thing it was daylight.

Instead of using stakes and line I have always just done the same in my notebook as I walk. Just lay it on the ground, orient the notebook to N (which is how the ground here obviously is) then use your compass the exact same way but marking a line on the paper (which takes the place of the string.) Using the a 1:24k scale you can trace it off on clear plastic with a dry erase and then lay that over a topo map and see what is in between you and home. Definitely quicker to just jot down the bearing and distance but I find taking the little extra time to orient the notebook and plot the line is well worth it.

Well this is the coolest trick ever! Just found your channel, love it, and thank you for all the teaching you do. There are basic things in the world that people just need to know. I have a job where i meet lots of people and the young ones these days don't seem to know the most basic things. Iv'e always loved to learn, almost anything really. Also i used to scuba dive alot and got the chance to take an underwater navigation course. So interesting, instead of pace counting, we used flipper counting to do the 90 degree offset and had to do the add and subtract of the azimuth in our heads. Again thank you.
That is a nice system and I have to practice using it to get around. I never learned navigation while in the Air Force, but wish they had taught it to all of us when I was in there.

In the book by a green beret he also discusses how you can do it with vehicles. Miles on land and rate of speed on water.
