    I'm driving 2007 1.6 vvti & I like it. It is nothing fancy, just a smooth engine, very reliable, it has clocked 200k kms. I bought at 160k kms, haven't faced any issue so far. Just had to change the clutch at 170k kms as it was bit worn out and was struggling at the hills. If you take care of it, it'll last very long.

    I had this car for 6 years , did 210 k miles , i did general oil mentenance every 10k , over this 6 years i had to change 2 wheel bearings and one link rod, the engine was 2.2 diesel , head gasket done by the service. And that is it no issues with dpf or egr just refuel on quality stations. Very good and reliable car.

    It's a bit unfair to talk about injectors or DMFs as some sort outliers in this car. They break no earlier and no later than in any other diesel. It's just inherently part of the technology that these parts will fail (in every diesel) at high mileage. They all use standard parts (Luk, KKK, BorgWarner, Continental, Delphi). That's like saying that one of the cars deficiencies is that tires go bad after 100.000kms

    Very accurate assessment I think. My 2004 2.0 d4d now has 200,000 miles on it. Had to replace clutch and front headlights, car also has had steering issues, and egr valve problems. Using more oil now. Still a good car overall.

    My aunt has estate version with 2 liter petrol and manual transmission. Up to 300 000km only real problems she had were with both headlights that got replaced several times way back when she bought it brand new. After 300 000 km she started hearing knocking noise which came from worn suspension. After she got the suspension rebuilt it has been running perfectly and now has nearly 400 000km.

    We've had a 2008 (facelift as you call it) 2.0 litre d4d for about 6 years, its done nearly 90k miles now. Never had any problems with regards to breakdowns but issues picked up when servicing include excessive brake pipe corrosion and catalyst problems (this was expensive to repair at Toyota garage!) They also had trouble sourcing parts so had to use generics which they wouldn't normally do, guess that's what comes of owning a ten year old car! All in all a reliable work horse! Not much to get excited about but great for practicallity and transporting family about in comfort.

    I’ve owned a 2005 Avensis 2.0 wagon with all the options. I sold it with 257 thousand kilometers and the only thing that ever broke was the starter motor. A common problem on these is the catalytic converter that will wear out after 200 thousand kilometers, but it will pass its yearly inspection, usually the oxygen sensor will give the engine warning light for a couple of days and then its gone for a while.

    My 2007 Avensis D4D 2 litre has now done 220k miles, it uses no oil between services, I change the oil and filter every 8k miles. It’s all original except the alternator, front wishbone, a driveshaft & a front coil spring all after 150k miles, one problem I did have was poor cold weather starting, after a few dead ends when we thought it was fixed with a new battery, fuel filters & glow plugs the culprit was the Denso suction control valve, fixed in 15 minutes for £45 new part. The car is dull but it’s a good all rounder, keep it serviced, the last 2 mot’s list rear subframe corrosion as an advisor, cheers!

    I drive one of these. 2003 1.8 petrol. It was my dad's but he passed it on to me when he bought his new car. I like the review- on the whole it's a good car but it can have issues. My own experiences:
    - It's mostly reliable but the catalytic converter can fail( as another owner pointed out below), mine did only after 80k miles. A replacement was going to cost almost as the price of the car so I haven't bothered replacing it. It's been passing its MOT on emissions but you never know when it might not anymore. Every year it's 'hope for the best'. This also means the engine light is on permanently.
    - Can be thirsty for oil. I always have to keep an eye out for the oil levels as once it ran out completely.
    Apart from this, we haven't had many issues over last 15 years. Just regular maintenance. 100k+ miles and still on original clutch and original timing chain. Comfortable, low revving car. Its acceleration is slow but once you are over 40 mph, it has enough power and overtaking is not an issue. It is best on long roads and the ride is very smooth.
    For me, the catalytic converter issue means it won't have much of a resale value but hopefully I can manage to get a few more years out of it before it kicks it.

    • @jakien
      @jakien 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a common problem with petrol avensis. It's burning oil due to clogged oli drain plugs in the pistons. Fill it with oil flush and premium fuel, take it for a run at high revs and then change the oil to fully synthetic. That should solve it. No point changing the cat until the oil burning problem is solved. A run a high revs with some flush in and then some good oil might shift the oil in the oil drain plugs.

    Seems like the D-4D is quite a bad engine... what do you think about the 1.4 D-4D? I was thinking to get a Toyota iQ 1.4 D-4D with manual transmission and have it chipped up to 115 HP. My dad's corolla has that exact same engine, but it has only 61k kilometers in it (no problems at all so far) so not sure if they are reliable on the long run.. what do you think?

      Late response - we have Toyota Yaris with that engine, now with 250000 km on it and it is still going like a new one! There was not a single error on it and only some rubber belts were changed, but timing chain and turbo and all the other parts are original.

      I had heard that 2.0 is more sensitive to petrol quality, because its direct injection, because of E10 bioetanol in petrol.

  • @drjukebox
    @drjukebox 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Avoid the oil burning petrol engines (never had one that didn't) and buy the diesel. Buy the diesel from 2006- to avoid the cam belt. I have three, between 270000 and 380000 kms. Neither uses any oil.
    One has issues with the particle filter, so may sell it. It is the one with the lowest mileage...
    Especieally the 2.0 litre 2007-08 is cheap and dependable to run.

    It is simply not correct that there should be problems with the 1.8 l petrol engine having to use oil. I am the happy owner of 2 Avensis. One from 2005 that has done 400,000 km and the other from 2006 with 355,000 on the speedometer. Both has 1.8 l engines.
    There are no reported problems with these engines

    well have second of those now. 2003 luna 1.8 fueland 2004 T3.5 also 1.8. little upgrade had to make because of rotten wires on drivers side. that coused problems in electronics. starting with windows and later efecting electronic panel too. without this yes i got first one with broken steering column as one of tiny little plastic part can snap easily but u need to change all full 3 parts steering column as if u start to take a part that snaps too. other problem is recalled part on suspension. can't remember name( banana or arm shape with bushings). also often problem with o2 sensor, air filter sensors. this all are expensive to fix too. yes corners rots on windows and even front screen too. plastics under engine always brakes and loosens. bumper clips complete shit. as many i seen them all broken. because bumper clips broke also plastics around wheels easy to damage too as bumper holds them in place. without all that a comfy car. a bit noisy. lovely power but just car not made for speed. i liked Luna way more than T 3.5 for sure. simple bits makes huge difference. just maintenance of car a bit too expensive for sure. steering column only 1500 eu if u need new, those bananas/ arms or what ever called( recalled parts) 300 eu, lambda sensor starts 90 but goes easy up to 200 for decent one and so on. oh yea starter went of too 200eu. alternator had to be repaired on 03 one and tensioner was badly warned. also bursted pipe from engine. and first one was 2 places leakage on engine and a few more small trubles. all this pleasures on both cars had in 2.5 years. wooooohooo officially hate this car but can't afford better :( day after tomorrow time for more service ;( most annoying part is anything u touch is common Toyota👿 problem
    for those that complains for oil and fuel usage advice check spark plugs and same again lambda sensor. bank 1. this are cousing this issues. normaly my one uses nax 7.5l in town and outside of town i got even 4.5 a quiet bit distance going 80 braking mainly for turns only by taking foot of clutch and no harsh acceleration. this car uses twice more fuel if u pres clutch down more often

    I worked back then at an Toyota Dealership and i never had to replace a Chain on this Car. Neither on the Petrol and Diesel ones.
    I wouldn't say, that the DMF and Injectors are that bad. I know people which have more than 300000km on their car and still have the first Turbo, Injector and DMF. Of course, it can fail earlier, but i wouldn't say it's worse than other cars.
