Those of you who are trying to get more views on youtube with their channel, might I make a suggestion? I will always, fucking ALWAYS watch a video called Hotline Miami and kanye west.
This was absolutely fantastic. You clearly know a great deal about music, and the breakdown of each sum of its parts was fascinating. Definitely had me looking at the sound of this game in an entirely new light. Amazing stuff man.
Now that, was an Incredible review. That is the way a lot of people analyze games and talk about games with others, yet you are the only one i've found that can speak intelligently about games as an art without sounding condescending, or fumbling to convert your thoughts into a concise and elegant review. Review doesn't even apply here. This was nothing short of an analytical examination on video games and the way people experience them. I have no idea why you aren't more popular than you are, but please continue to do what you do.
Satch, this is the first review of yours I've ever seen, and I am subscribing immediately. Your in-depth commentary of games and why they're made is never pretentious or holier-than-thou, something that other analysts seem to struggle with. It serves it's purpose of fueling discussion brilliantly, and thanks to the clever editing and intelligent writing, it never gets stale. You've earned yourself a new fan.
I went on Normal Boots yesterday and found you, and you're already one of my favorite game reviewers. You break down every part of a game and look into it, that's why I think you're incredible.
I'd just like to say, you sir are are doing nothing short of excellence. And are one of the now 3 youtubers I genuinely respect, I hope you continue to do what your doing. Much respect Satch
Honestly...You make some of the best reviews out there dude, I sometimes forget up subbed to you but I always enjoy when I see a video from you in my subbox cus I know im in for something very well put together.
I have been ignoring game reviews for a long time... but watching/hearing you talk about this game has filled me with a kind of warmth and excitement that I can't ignore. You captured my every feeling and thought about Hotline Miami and triggered new ideas and reflections on my experiences with the game. The way you talk about the soundtrack... it's like I can imagine being Perturbator and I'm beaming with pride. This is the kind of sophistication and introspection that this industry desperately needs if we want to keep growing. Great work with the content of the video, but also great work on the editing and composition of everything. This is easily the best gaming-related video I've seen since TH-cam was first created.
Oh my gosh O.o I haven't watched you since tone of your first videos (The sonic and Knuckles Saga) when you had roughly like 2k or so subs and now you have 36k!!! I'm so happy for you Satch, I'm glad that the people recognize your talent and hardwork. The editing is fantastic, you show emotion in your work and you have honest opinions and care about your reviews. Congrats Satch! :)
The explanation of the story is terrible, I'm sorry. *LET THERE BE SPOILERS* The 'gifts' Jacket gets from Beard in the stores are fake. Beard is just a hallucination, proved in HM:2, killed when Russia nuked San Francisco. Both Jacket and Beard were in the war, an alternate Cold War that the US and Russia went to armed combat. Both were close friends, and when Beard was killed Jacket wanted to destroy the Russians. Richter was sent to kill Jacket, for reasons unknown for now. The creators during the secret ending said 'none of it matters.' In HM:2, Richard says the same thing to many characters. If Jacket had been killed by Helmet, then the second ending would have occurred, with FB being destroyed. But, because Jacket used the police trace, which traced the 'wrong number', HM:2 happened. Richard even says this to Jacket, telling him that 'you'll never see the true picture, and it's all your fault.' I guess this because this was made before HM:2 came out he didn't have the whole picture, but most of the story clues were there in the first game, and it made sense even without HM:2.
Found this channel through some random TH-cam surfing, and I must say that you provide the most articulate and insightful analysis of gaming I've ever seen on the Internet, or any other medium, hands down. More impressive is that you manage to do it without being overly academic and boring. Keep up the great work!
I like how you tell the story telling people flat out "these are just my thoughts" in a way not saying you are always right which I see so many do these days. Great vid man.
Out of every video talking about Hotline Miami, this one takes the cake. Your eloquence, production, and the manner in which you laid out your review got your opinions voiced without confusion. Honestly relating the game to the larger art world in general was an amazing surprise. TLDR: GREATJOB
Man it's refreshing to hear someone talk about game music and really dig in! I'm not some all knowing audiophile but I know when a good soundtrack (like Hotline Miami or for my money Killer 7) merits discussion on WHY it's good. Keep it humble and keep it awesome Satch!
Anyone who's using Oldboy comparisons deserves a sub in my books. Well done! These reviews are probably the most articulate and objective I've seen on TH-cam.
I really like your review style. I appreciate how level-headed you remain all throughout your reviews, just absorbing it all. You have my subscription.
First off, Satchell, your reviews are the best out there - I always get really excited when I see that a new one has been uploaded. And secondly, I got hotline Miami earlier this year after reading that it was a game that "was ultra-violent, and focused on questioning the player on why they are" I thought as a story preface that is awesome, but when I came to play it I saw that the mechanics and immersion is what makes it shine, and the narrative is just there to keep the level of immersion needed to fully experience the game. It used narrative as a tool to convey a games goal, and because it didn't overthink itself it succeeded. Thanks for the awesome video!!
Ablumz Of course not. Why would I viscerally undermine this mans prestigious commentary to up my prodigal intentions in an attempt to come out as auspicious ;)
ReCode Detro Most of the script could be cut and be a lot more to the point. It's a bit too formulaic and saccharine. A sophomoric essay with some potential.
I really like your perspective on game reviews and deconstruction on games. Probably my favorite game reviewer on TH-cam at the moment. Just thought I'd show my appreciation.
I wasn't sold on this channel when I noticed it as a part of Normal Boots, but on a whim I gave it a shot. I am very thoroughly impressed thus far. You provide a lot of depth that, if present with other game reviews, isn't readily apparent. 10/10. Would recommend to friends and family.
Dude, this was awesome! I don't think I've ever seen a game review that goes as in-depth as yours, and you gave lots of examples to support your claims. Calling yourself a rookie at this is a great disservice!
My goodness, I just found your videos and am on a marathon, I love your style. Your in-depth and intelligent overview is very entertaining. Thank you for the videos man.
Although I enjoyed your review, the game is definitely not the Kanye West of games. Kanye West believes he actually is a better man than other people. He believes he's something of a god, even though his rants on why he is is comparable to that of someone who is insane. Hotline Miami is self-aware and shows that even a game centered on mindless killing can and does have an explanation behind it. Richard, the godlike entity wearing the rooster mask surrounded by yellow light in the dream sequences, isn't just asking Jacket, our main character, if he enjoys hurting people; he's also asking you. You clearly enjoy playing the game and killing random people because you find it fun. The janitors aka the founders of 50 Blessings say during the password ending that Biker signed up for 50 Blessings and should've known what he was getting himself into, a metaphor for how you bought the game and you should've known what you were getting into. The Biker represents the player who is tired
of the game and wants to find the answers for his questions whereas Jacket represents the player who doesn't care for story and just wants to kill people. Hotline Miami 2 sews together the pieces left tattered and shows you many reasons and excuses for why people kill and the inevitable consequences of their actions. Hotline Miami 1 is a game about mindless murder, Hotline Miami 2 shows you what happens when you follow that road. Kanye West is a man who believes he is too good for consequences, in fact, he's practically a perfect character for the game because the game mocks people like him and shows him those consequences that he refuses to accept, much like how Richard tries to show the characters of the second game the consequences of what they do but they refuse to accept it and continue doing it until they die from what they refused to believe because they were scared of facing the truth. Hotline Miami shows that violence is useless and only leads to a quicker extinction of the
Kanye West is self aware too. At least 3 of his albums revolve around the theme of insecurity, ego, and a renewed sense of self through faith, love, or some other means. Those messages wouldn't be as impactful if he didn't make an ass of himself in between album releases.
Richard also talks to the player through martin browns' nightmare interview. He asks if martin enjoys hurting other people( or something like that) , and he says it's just a movie, kind like us when we say "it's just a videogame"
I don't know, we have yet to see Kanye's endgame. Maybe after he becomes president he has this beautiful speech about the power of believing in yourself. Maybe after four years in office he tells the world that his entire career was a success story about success stories. Maybe in his last dying breaths he whispers: "just a prank, bro" The world may never know.
Interesting talk and challenge you issued to yourself. I really appreciate these real reviews that delve into the whole game and aren't afraid to talk about the ending or the game as a whole.
This is so great! I'm getting so addicted at youtube videos that leaves food for thought! just subscribed and for the record, ip's like Hotline Miami, Yeezus or Gone Home are just so refreshingly basic and simple to approach, it leaves YOU filling in the gaps you want because you actually WANT and not getting jammed some convoluted theme down you don't even care for!
God damn it. God, damn it, I was just at Conbravo and was at the normalboots panel, And totally forgot to ask satch any questions, Everyone was asking everyone else, and satch is the man, I wanted to hear more from him... Ethier way this video / series is amazing, keep up the awesome work.
Solid case study Satch. Loved the final observation regarding satire, and your end statement about games reviewing really resonated with me as a writer. Keep up the top work.
Fantastic work. Especially the 'Music as a tour guide' point. It's so key in helping to set a mood and evoke a time and place, especially in a game like HM where the other traditional elements of storytelling (narrative, characterization) are so sparse. Subscribed, looking forward to seeing what you do next!
Holy shit, a new worthwhile face in the youtube community. Welcome aboard Satchbag's Goods, your content is very good and the execution is extremely fresh. Although you seem kind of a noob, but WHATEVER YOLO.
I am amazed at the high level of quality your videos have. You do an amazing job with the presentation and structure. We need more people that have the same level of insight such as yourself within our gaming culture.
I greatly enjoy the cinematography in the intro and the occasional switching to a secondary camera.. using your wall as a text slide. PLUS you have a very eclectic vocabulary. Keep up the fantastic work!
***** I'm a bit surprised that not more people mention them. Among all the people mentioned, Extra Credits makes great content, and are the group that has been honored by Valve, government officials, etc.
Keep moving forward Satchel; Analyzing these concepts in an expressive way will hopefully aid a lot more to the random thoughts a self referential style game may have to offer. The game world as an art form is flowing with magnificent ideas that I hope keep coming to fruition.
Oh. My God. Halfway through this video and I subbed so hard. Where can I find more intelligent analysis of video games like this?! You, sir, have answered my prayers.
Spoilers ahead: the unlocked ending actually does very little for the story. an alert player will have already pieced together what was on the table and they never give definite reason on jacket's murders. is he an everyman turned monster who can't come back to humanity, or a cold-blooded murderer who has no respect for human life? is he truly such a patriot he was willing to dive headfirst into a bloodbath, or did he simply want a reason to indulge his brutal instincts? in a way I kind of admire the choice but at the same time I feel like I did more work than the actual writers when coming up with the story I believe.
I think Jacket is a jab at the ignorant racists and nationalists in the world. He is quick to judge that Russians are bad for America by signing up for 50 blessings and he is willing to take this upon violently.
Lithium Flower Also Jacket. Jacket is in 50 Blessings so we can presume he is anti-Russian to the point of violence. There was the letter thanking him for joining on his diner table on the first level (Not counting Metro)
can't be sure of that, not everyone joined because of that. Jake probably joined because he hates Russians but we can't assume that for the other guys. Biker we know did it because he was bored and got tired of being used. Jacket never says anything so it's hard to say but based on what Richard tells us and Jacket's actions on bosses I'm going to assume he's just really fucking violent and enjoys hurting people. that's what richard tells us and that's what his actions tell us and that's why I feel he joined.
Lithium Flower The only part he starts killing people other than Russians is when his Girlfriend dies (revengeful rage). But before that he only kills the Mobsters and leaves everyone else alone. When the girl is left in the room he takes her home instead of killing her, and when he goes to the pizza parlor and other places he doesn't kill anyone.
Sach, you are absolutely one of the most interesting and intellectually stimulating game reviewers around. This was a great analysis of the game as a more meta construct of the game community.
0.0163% dislikes... there is a reason for that. You are easily the most philosophical TH-camr I know of at this point. Different channels can bring us different things, IE. The game theorists can bring us knowledge. But ultimately, most channels just produce comedy (which isn't necessarily bad but has become overly common.). You instead choose to take your time producing new content and have turned your videos into a form of ART. I salute you for this Satch!
After weeks of hearing about your show on Continue? I thought I'd finally check it out. Really awesome stuff! I'm glad there is still room for thoughtful, well put-together videos on TH-cam. Subscribed!
Excellent analysis! Loved that you didn't only give your subjective opinion on the games mechanics and production value (as so many commercial and traditional reviews do) but you examined Hotline within it's place in cultural and historical context; and you topped it all off with a solid (and humorous) analogy. Errant Signal did a similarly interesting review; his content is less crisply produced than yours but you should check him out. I suspect you will find him inspiring. Keep up the good work Satch!
I think I am in love with your reviews and the fact that you bring so much of your artistic life forward into your videos. Keep the passion there and I ensure people will gather.
Another wonderful video satch. Hotline Miami was one of my favorite games if last year and this analysis of the game just made me want to go back and play it. And I think your final point is one a lot of us content creators have to deeply think about going forward.
I liked the eloquent and in-depth way you discussed this game. You made me rethink a lot of my stance on Yeezus, as weird as that sounds. I'm a big Kanye fan pre-808's, which even that has sort of grown on me, and I've been largely uninterested in Yeezus, especially lyrically but you posed a side I didn't really accept when others stated it to me previously. Your approach really fleshed out the way they would defend it. I've already made up my mind on how masterful Hotline Miami is, but I will be giving Yeezus a further assessment.
You do a good job of explaining all the good that can be found in a game ,and you are able to get use viewers to ponder topics, like the social media centered culture that is void of movements, that people probably wouldn't think about without the promise of a game review to entice them.
Really enjoying your clean edits, smooth delivery and transitional titles w/ differing camera angles. The audio is clean and easy to listen to, and the flow of the review is perfect. Perfect amount of time, effort, creativity, explanation and everything else that made this review rock. Hope to see more of your material, and that your sub base and views grow exponentially. Badass Channel.
I was worried that you would be cast aside when you first started youtube, in fact I ignored your channel's contributions on the Normalboots website. But now that I have given you a chance I am unbelievably blown away with your ability to break a game down and tell me about it. I really, really enjoy your case studies. Please make more. Please. :)
I always look forward to your reviews and analysis on games! You delve in the deeper discussions and analysis' of the form of video games, a discussion which seems to be lacking especially on the TH-cam hub. Thanks again, it was an enjoyable episode and can't wait for the next one!
Oh wow... That was amazing. It's incredible how you did that, relating modern culture gaming to ancient ways of communication and ancient forms of art. That... was beautiful.
I love this analysis, and you're a great speaker. Don't hold back from the depth you see in game design or philosophy, Gaming industry needs more people like you.
You sir, are a gentleman and a scholar. Most eloquent, well fleshed out review/ overview of anything I've seen in a long time. A fitting testament to my favourite game of 2012 (jesus, I've been playing this game for 2 years now.) (Y) (Y) (Y)

This review is one of the best work I have ever seen, good job sir!
Holy shit dude, this is the first video of yours that I've seen, and your production quality is unreal. I left fullscreen just to see how many subs you had, and your quality of content has no relation to your subs. Keep up the amazing work dude!
Firstly, intro and outro music is awesome. Second, Hotline Miami is really interesting because it is both fun for what it is, but also does a good job of putting you into a "kill everything around you mode" and then putting you into a "look what you've wrought" mode right after, between its quiet after levels and fairly trippy narrative.
Beautifully said from beginning to end your eloquent words only raise the perspective of why video games should be viewed as an art, especially how you dissected the game from sound, design, and narrative. I look forward to seeing more of your videos and thank you for taking a mature look at games, it is very difficult to find quality options about video games.
"Hotline Miami and Kanye West" Never thought I'd see hat.
I hear you
Mating Season 2
Who’s hat?
I was wondering what in the world Kanye West had to do with Hotline Miami going into this.
I did not come out disappointed.
Those of you who are trying to get more views on youtube with their channel, might I make a suggestion?
I will always, fucking ALWAYS watch a video called Hotline Miami and kanye west.

Great episode! This is the sort of stuff that's going to end up elevating the medium!

somebody didn't read the newspaper clippings or the 50 blessings flyer

Another fantastic episode! Your take on the deeper topics behind the game is just astoundingly interesting. :D

This is a very unique series, and a very good one at that, man. You just got yourself a new fan.
I am amazed at the high level of quality your videos have.
You do an amazing job with the presentation and structure.
We need more people that have the same level of insight such as yourself within our gaming culture.
Mmmm, listening to you describing their use of music pleased my ears.
Speaking of Art...
You are the Art of Video Game Reviews Satchell.
I am grateful for you
I greatly enjoy the cinematography in the intro and the occasional switching to a secondary camera.. using your wall as a text slide. PLUS you have a very eclectic vocabulary. Keep up the fantastic work!
This was great Satch,I especially liked how you wrapped it up. I'm taking that last statement you said to heart.
This guy's smarter than every other schmoe who talks about video games on the internet.
Super bunnyhop and errant signal.
Extra Credits....
TheEliteGir Of course!
The production value of your videos is insane. Subbed.
Spoilers ahead:
the unlocked ending actually does very little for the story. an alert player will have already pieced together what was on the table and they never give definite reason on jacket's murders. is he an everyman turned monster who can't come back to humanity, or a cold-blooded murderer who has no respect for human life? is he truly such a patriot he was willing to dive headfirst into a bloodbath, or did he simply want a reason to indulge his brutal instincts? in a way I kind of admire the choice but at the same time I feel like I did more work than the actual writers when coming up with the story I believe.
I think Jacket is a jab at the ignorant racists and nationalists in the world. He is quick to judge that Russians are bad for America by signing up for 50 blessings and he is willing to take this upon violently.
SpookyScarySkelemon lol that'd be Jake from HM2
Hotline Miami is one of those games that it's all about the journey instead of the destination.
Lovely case study mate. The Kanye West parallel you made was actually pretty much on the point.
Great work Satch. I love how you referred and compared the game to other artistic examples to validate and explain your points.
Dude, I totally missed your stuff. Good to see it's still going.
Today I found about this youtube channel, you have the best youtube content about gaming!
Sir, this was a fucking brillaint review. Well done.
Satch, this video was incredible. So deep and well thought out, absolutely loved it!
This is the most intelligent and at the same time the most hipster review I've ever watched. Love it!
You're one of the best man. Hope to see you again next year at SGC
It is a relief to see someone treating video games in a different more adult manner.
wow best review ive ever seen - high production value and alot of time went into it. Please never stop!
Thanks Satch, I love your vids, always so thought provoking and meaningful, you always share points that mean so much.
Your reviews are absolutely astounding.
2:10 i cant get past that level, ive been stuck on it for days
Firstly, intro and outro music is awesome. Second, Hotline Miami is really interesting because it is both fun for what it is, but also does a good job of putting you into a "kill everything around you mode" and then putting you into a "look what you've wrought" mode right after, between its quiet after levels and fairly trippy narrative.
Just finished playing this at this moment. Grabbed food and there's a new satchbag episode. Hoocha
What is this? New Satchbag Case Study? Why yes, I will watch this, thank you!
Hey Satch thanks for your vids they're well articulated and really bring out the thinkers in all of us. Please keep doing what you are doing!
I first heard you on the Continuecast and I'm so glad I decided to check out your channel. You are brilliant, dude.
Hi, everyone. Satchelly Bagtano here
You've got a brilliant way of reviewing games, and you've earned yourself a subscriber.
What a well informed videogame review! This is the way that videogames should be analyzed!
I enjoy playing the games after you reviewed them, even if I've already played/finished them, I start to analyze it more.
great job as always
