I will rather see the government provide a single digit fund for our local vehicle makers over the next 10 years and back it with a policy to enable Nigerian be able to buy and pay on installment while placing a 300% tax on vehicle importation for the next 5 years. When productions have ramped up significantly, then a total ban on foreign vehicles for the next 50 years.

The importations of diesel into Nigeria has been on before Dangote refinery and it's not considered toxic. Now because of Dangote, it's become toxic. Who is deceiving who? This is how Buhari started by banning importations of foods and see where Nigeria is today? If Dangote diesel is the best who then stops him from exporting it to the other part of the world? Senate, we Nigerian are not fools.

    • @ollyonearth
      @ollyonearth วันที่ผ่านมา

You are missing the point. NNPC is sabotaging dangote effort by not supplying it crude to refine. Therefore the refinery has to depend on importation of crude from United States. You don't see problem in this? Yet we are complaining about dollar rising? You don't see attempt here to make sure local refineries both privately own and the ones owned by Nigeria to fail so Nigeria can forever depend on foreign importation? Some of us are using sentiment to judge every situation until things completely go out of hands.
America and European will do everything to make sure those local refineries never work. Dangote spent billions of dollars to build that refinery. He hired thousands of Nigerians both Igbos, Hausas and Yorubas. Much like Airpeace did in the aviation industry. All to make our economy to be less dependent on importation and dollars but some of us don't see it? Go to Dangote refinery in Lagos and see people who work there and get paid well. See the demographic of workers. And see true representation of our diversity. Just because the owner is an hausa man means we should put our collective interest in the hands of another country?
      I pity this country...

what about the importation of SUVS for members of the Nigeria parliaments while we have companies producing and assembling SUVS in Nigeria. A company is already producing heavy trucks in Nigeria but Dangote is going ahead inviting China to establish heavy truck assembling plant. Dangote wants to monopolize everything. The only sense the senate is making here is the importation of adorated gas which should be stopped. USA has local refineries still they import fuel which makes the market competitive. If you allow Dangote to be the sole supplier of gas and fuel, he will hick the price like he was doing in his other products like cement until BUA came in. If Dangote is the sole suppliers of gas and fuel in Nigeria, what if something happens to his refinery so the entire country will not have fuel.

We need to stop all importation of deisel, foreign cars, and various other products we already have in our country. Maybe increase tariffs on these things. (They probably shouldn’t stop importation of foreign phones, even though we already have Nigerian phones. But they should increase tariffs on it).
And increase the advertisement of Nigerian made products.
We also need to rebuild our unalived production chains. We had so many in the 1980s. Where did they all go.

The masses should no longer bear the burden of Dangote's monopolistic practices. The hefty price tag on his cement is a stark reminder of this injustice. If diesel imports can spur competition and drive prices down, then we welcome it. The Dangote Refinery is a private entity and must compete fairly in the market without enjoying undue advantages.
More importantly, state own refineries must work. That's what Oshiomole and his colleagues should worry about. Once our refineries start working at maximum capacity, then we can start talking about banning diesel importation.

Am trying to understand the logic behind this debate, if Dangote provides diesel at a cheaper price, that will automatically kill off any imported competition. It's like what Air Peace did when they lowered throw their fare rate to London.

Reduce Cash reserve rate, Monetary policy rate and Interest rates.
These are the interest rates among countries that are growing or want to grow.
    Japan 1%
    China 2.5%
    South Korea 3.5%
    EU 3.75%
    USA 5.5%.
    While this is Nigeria’s
    Nigeria 26%.
How can businesses provide jobs with high rates like this. What business in Nigeria can net the average Nigerian a profit of 30% per month.
Our would Nigerian businesses be able to create jobs with this high of interest rates?
We need to bring this rates to 10%. This 26% is far too high.

it is shameful that Dangote refinery is working producing good quality fuels . yet we import fuel while Dangote export his products. paradox just the same way we have Innoson motor producing high quality vehicles, yet billion are spent importing vehicle for Assembly members. Don't kill the industrial sector: refineries, automobile, USD 4bn spent to maintain; enough to build new refinery.

Some of the reasons why Investors won't come in to invest in Nigeria. I can't imagine some officials of the Government especially in the oil sector jeopardizing the efforts of the president to bring in more investment. Those responsible for the issuance of import license on diesel should be sanctioned appropriately. Why issuing licenses on the product when we have a refinery that can supply enough quality of it. ? This was how our local refineries were destroyed...

The refinery in question has not impacted on the members of Nigerian public. It was our expectation that local refinery will reduce pump price of petroleum products. What we are hearing is that Dangote is importing crude oil to Nigeria - one of the largest producer of crude oil. Dangote is seeking for a robust monopoly of the sector. His refund of about 70% of the loan even before the completion of the refinery raises serious doubts as to whether he actually borrowed the sum or did he just trade with cbn forex at the black market and then use the proceed to return the so called loan. This question has to be answered.
