  • This instructive Armageddon chess game between Ding Liren and Magnus Carlsen from the 2024 Norway Chess Tournament features strategic play in the English Opening. In the opening, the d4 square becomes highly significant. Watch as Carlsen executes a timely knight maneuver into that outpost. Shortly after Ding provokes weaknesses on Carlsen's kingside, the attention shifts to potential pawn breaks on a4 and g5. In the major piece specific endgame, Ding and Carlsen both kingwalk seeking safe havens on the queenside.

    Great presentation. Love how Carlsen is playing the format, but still wants to win outright.

    With the knight-bishop trade on move 20, I feel like some players can get really hung up on a strong knight or bishop like that being unwilling to trade it, but if you aren't willing to actually use the knight when given the chance, it's not worth as much in that position as it seems

    Royal couples and pawn walls ending is pretty nice. I dont often see games where both sides only have queens and pawns left

    Why offer a dark square bishop exchange? Isn't that a good bishop for a terrible bishop?

    Jerry, on move 56 for black you described it as the queen returning to defend against perpetual check, but that can't be right since "black had draw odds." Am I missing something? Also, on move 51, would Qd2 have been better for white?

    At 7:42 when discussing the knight takes bishop, would it be worth it for black to keep that forward d4 knight since he has his light squared bishop readily available to counter white’s light squared bishop?

    Jerry, when you go into sidelines and variations, is it because of what the Opponents say in interviews afterwards; or is it “best play” you figure out yourself (with or without aid from the computer)? Or all three?
    Anyway thanks.

    16:21 Why would black need to 'defend' against a perpetual? You then go on to say that black wins doing exactly that.

    • @ChessNetwork
      @ChessNetwork  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      Yeah, better expressed as black was looking to win objectively even though a draw was suffice for the Armageddon format.
